Judas Iscariot is an animated retelling of The New Testament of the Holy Bible, featuring details from the Apocrypha (The "Unofficial" Gospels) with a fresh stylized reinterpretation of the story's core figures. The goal of this project is to illuminate this text for both a religious and non-religious audience, placing it back into the historical context of Jesus’s role as a political figure during the Roman occupation of Judea. This film explores mature themes pertaining to love, devotion, and control. The film is expected to be 15-20 minutes long, depending on how much can be raised with the kickstarter campaign. It is expected to take 1-2 years to finish writing, storyboarding, animating, and painting assets for this project, with an additional period of time devoted to film festival screenings before it is ready for the public.  Judas Iscariot will be the second short film written and directed by Charles Kugler, who has worked in the animation industry for clients like Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, and FOX.

I've been thinking about this quote by Dorothy L Sayers

“God sends nobody to Hell; only a wicked ignorance can suggest that He would do to us the very thing He died to save us from. But He has so made us that what in the end we choose, that in the end we shall have. If we enter the state called Hell, it is because we have willed to do so.”

I've also been thinking about the idea that everyone who believes in Jesus goes to heaven. If we accept that Jesus is God's love for humanity manifest, as I do, then believing in Jesus is more a question of accepting God's love.

God's love, under which there is no male or female, no east or west, no jew or greek. So for the time being I believe that what gets a person into heaven is their willingness to see the humanity in others around them, and more than that to join with them in eternal life.

Hell is the absence of God's love, which can only be found in those who reject God's love for others.

If we want to borrow wisdom from the Bible, then the root cause of people's imperfection and self-hatred is sin, and the answer is grace.

Even in the story of Adam and Eve, neither of the first humans ever apologized to God or did anything to atone to him for their betrayal. They blamed anyone and everyone but themselves, even blaming each other. How different things might have been if they'd thrown themselves on his mercy.

By rights God could have killed them on the spot, but instead he merely kicked them out of the Garden and denied them access to the Fruit of Life. They would die eventually, but that time would give them a grace period to reconcile with him, which would allow him to perfectly restore them to life later.

And God made that reconciliation possible with another unilateral action: Incarnating as a man to die for their sins.

"For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, such that no one can boast."

Or, to borrow a line from Fall Out Boy's "Centuries":

~[God] never meant for you to fix yourself.~

Even the Apostle Paul, author of most of the New Testament and a towering father of the early Church, felt inadequate his entire life. His answer was to take comfort in God's grace.

i really do believe that the answer to a lot of people's self hatred is not to try and reassure them that they are wonderful and okay and enough, but instead to remind them theyre a completely unremarkable regular ass person who is not the center of the universe or especially important so why would they expect themselves to be some superhuman savior. like there really is a kernel of out of control self importance at the heart of thinking youre an evil lazy piece of shit. because why would you expect you be anything but just like some guy. if you wouldnt expect the guy who works at the vape shop or your mailman or whatever to be able to do something then why would you expect yourself to? youre just some random ass person. its fine
