Jewish Festival of Lights
Tumblr media
The Jewish Festival of Lights is known as Hanukkah, also spelled Chanukah. It is an eight-day celebration that commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after it was reclaimed by the Maccabees from the Greek Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.
The holiday is typically celebrated in December, and it involves lighting a nine-branched candelabrum known as a menorah. One candle is lit on the first night, and an additional candle is added each subsequent night until all nine candles are lit on the eighth night. The ninth branch, known as the shamash, is used to light the other candles.
Other Hanukkah traditions include playing with a spinning top known as a dreidel, which has Hebrew letters on each side, and eating foods fried in oil, such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled donuts). The use of oil symbolizes the miracle of the small amount of oil that burned for eight days in the Temple's menorah.

Hedy Epstein and other Holocaust survivors who spoke out against Israel’s crimes against Palestinians taught me what Jewish activism should look like. Hedy embodied the spirit of Tikkun Olam and Rabbi Hillel’s question from the Talmud: “If I am not for others, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, who am I? If not now, when?” Rest in power, Hedy, and may her memory be a blessing. #Repost @muslimjewishbrotherhood with @use.repost ・・・ In August 2014, the nonagenarian Holocaust survivor was detained by St. Louis police at a civil disobedience action in support of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen who was killed by a white police officer. Epstein, who died of illness in her home in St. Louis on Thursday, at age 91, was an outspoken supporter of the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement, which was launched in the wake of Brown's death. She was also an economic justice advocate, as well as a longtime anti-war activist who staunchly opposed the U.S. war in Vietnam and the illegal invasion of Iraq. Epstein, was however, most well-known for her outspoken support for Palestinian rights. For more than a decade, Epstein tirelessly advocated on behalf of the Palestinians, who have lived under illegal Israeli military occupation for almost 50 years. She was active in the International Solidarity Movement and Free Gaza movement, and co-founded the St. Louis Palestine Solidarity Committee and the St. Louis chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace. Palestinians "are in a prison, they are prisoners," Epstein explained in a 2007 interview. "My participation is a small contribution that I can make compared to the sufferings that the Palestinians endure every single day." She called on the U.S. government, which gives more than $3 billion in unconditional military aid to Israel every year, to stop funding Israel, and to instead fund social programs and help the poor. #hedyepstein #jewishresistance #jewsforpalestine #freepalestine #shoah #holocaustsurvivor #holocaust #blacklivesmatter #accomplicesnotallies #jewishvalues #tikkunolam #ifnotnowwhen #palestine #israeliapartheid #boycottdivestmentsanctions #bdsmovement #humanrights #jewishwomen #activism #civilrights https://www.instagram.com/p/CgCgDBpu5NR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Jewish Traditions
Tumblr media
Jewish Traditions refers to the set of beliefs, customs, and practices that have been passed down through generations of Jewish people. These traditions are deeply rooted in the history and culture of the Jewish people, and play an important role in shaping their identity and way of life. Some of the key elements of Jewish tradition include:
Monotheism: Jews believe in one God who created the universe and continues to be actively involved in the world.
Torah: The Torah is the central text of Judaism, consisting of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. It contains the core teachings and commandments of Judaism.
Mitzvot: Mitzvot are the commandments or laws that are derived from the Torah and other Jewish texts. They cover a wide range of areas, including prayer, charity, dietary restrictions, and ethical behavior.
Shabbat: Shabbat is the weekly day of rest and spiritual rejuvenation that begins on Friday evening and ends on Saturday evening. It is a time for families and communities to come together and celebrate their faith.
Holidays: Jewish tradition includes a calendar of holidays and festivals that commemorate important events in Jewish history, such as Passover, Hanukkah, and Yom Kippur.
Synagogue: The synagogue is the central gathering place for Jewish worship and community life. It is where Jews come together to pray, study, and celebrate.
Tzedakah: Tzedakah is the Jewish concept of charitable giving, and is seen as an important part of Jewish tradition. It is considered a mitzvah, or a commandment, to give to those in need.
Overall, Jewish tradition is a rich and complex system of beliefs and practices that has evolved over thousands of years. It continues to be a source of inspiration and guidance for millions of Jews around the world.

Jewish Festivals
Tumblr media
Jewish festivals, also known as Jewish holidays or Jewish holy days, are special occasions that commemorate significant events in Jewish history and religious traditions. Some of the major Jewish festivals include:
Rosh Hashanah: The Jewish New Year, usually celebrated in September or October, marks the beginning of the High Holy Days.
Yom Kippur: The Day of Atonement, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, is observed ten days after Rosh Hashanah, and it is a day of fasting, prayer, and repentance.
Sukkot: The Feast of Tabernacles or Booths, a week-long festival in October, commemorates the Israelites' journey through the desert after leaving Egypt and living in temporary shelters.
Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights, an eight-day holiday in December, celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days.
Purim: A festive holiday in February or March, commemorates the salvation of the Jews from a plot to kill them in ancient Persia.
Passover: A spring festival in March or April, commemorates the liberation of the Jews from slavery in Egypt and the Exodus from Egypt.
Shavuot: The Feast of Weeks, which usually falls in May or June, celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and the first harvest of the year.
