It’s one thing standing in line to watch the blockbuster film “Oppenheimer.” It’s another thing entirely queueing up in a remote desert to experience the location of the film’s most pivotal scene.

But if you’re a fan of atomic history and can swing central New Mexico this October, your pilgrimage through the Jornada del Muerto (Dead Man’s Journey) will be so worth the effort.

Saturday, October 21, presents a rare opportunity to visit not just one but two scientifically significant and movie-famous destinations on the same day – each occupying opposite ends of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Trinity Site is the national historic landmark that’s home to mankind’s first nuclear blast on July 16, 1945, where plutonium gamma rays lit up the night sky. It hosts only two open house events each year.

And while you’re in the area, an extraordinary bonus is a second, free-of-charge open house aimed specifically at Trinity Site adventurers who are willing to drive another 100 miles to take in a second mind-bending experience.

It’s the Very Large Array Radio Observatory (VLA), which was dramatized in the 1997 alien-life movie “Contact.” The VLA telescope can spread wider than New York City, able to capture the whispers of distant radio waves as they undulate across our cosmos.

Rare access to Trinity Site

Trinity Site opens only two Saturdays a year. Once in April, and lucky for “Oppenheimer” enthusiasts, again in October.

The exact dates are announced in advance each year by the US Army.

The site is a secure military installation within the forbidding White Sands Missile Range, where live weapons are regularly tested. The terrain is high desert plateau, dotted with creosote brush and not much else.

In our everyday crush of crowds, traffic and strip malls, the Land of Enchantment’s sheer miles of open landscape and soul-nourishing cobalt vistas inspire. Buzz Aldrin’s impression of the moon’s surface parallels Trinity Site, a “magnificent desolation.”

When J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist known as the “father of the atomic bomb,” led his Manhattan Project team to Trinity, it wasn’t just for the isolation. He had history with New Mexico, attending summer boys’ camps during his youth. Because of the popularity of the movie “Oppenheimer,” a surge of visitors is expected on October 21.

The open house event, hosted by the US Army, is free but limited to the first 5,000 guests, on a first-come, first-served basis.

How to get there

From Albuquerque International Sunport airport, your best bet is a rental car for the two-hour drive south. It’s easy to get disoriented while navigating, so stick to the Army’s directions, as GPS instructions can be wonky. Take screen photos of the route mapped on your phone – as you may lose cell service – and have an actual roadmap as backup.

Aim to arrive at Trinity’s Stallion Gate before 8 a.m., when the gate opens. There will already be a line. Be early, and you’ll still have plenty of time for the day’s second adventure. Army officials will check your ID at the gate, and from there it’s a 17-mile (27-kilometer) drive to a parking lot located a quarter-mile walk from the reason you came – Ground Zero.

Trinity Site’s atmosphere during an open house is reminiscent of a small-town carnival from a bygone era. Vendors selling souvenir trinkets. Kids in strollers. Dogs wagging tails. Porta Potties. That’s until you notice the pop-up tent displaying Geiger counters. And another with radioactive Trinitite, the mysterious green-glass rock that rained down from the bomb’s blast.

Ominous fence signs remind guests that it’s against the law to remove any pieces of Trinitite they spy on the ground because ingested fragments retain enough radioactivity to be dangerous.

The famed 1918 McDonald adobe ranch house, where the bomb’s critical plutonium core was assembled in the master bedroom, survived the shock wave two miles away mostly intact. Buses shuttle visitors back and forth free of charge from the Trinity parking lot to the McDonald house.

Venture in farther to stand next to a life-size replica of Fat Man, the nuclear bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945.

Visitors can pose for photos inside Jumbo, the 216-ton steel cylinder scientists contemplated detonating the bomb – nicknamed the Gadget – within to contain its plutonium core if the full detonation failed.

Experiencing Ground Zero

The moment arrives to approach Ground Zero, marked simply by a black stone obelisk that’s 12 feet (3.66 meters) high.

Step back in time to the pre-dawn of July 16, 1945. Glance north, west and south where Oppenheimer’s team hunkered down in three bunkers, five miles away. You stand where the course of humanity shifted. Where the boundaries of physics and possibility stretched.

Picture the 100-foot-high steel tower that stood where the obelisk stands now. A few feet away only nubs of the tower remain, the bulk annihilated in the blast.

See in your mind the mattresses hauled in and stacked high to cushion the fall should the chains snap as they winched the heavy Gadget high into the air. And young scientists rotated throughout the night babysitting the bomb as crackles of lightning threatened to strike.

Oppenheimer wrote the poem “Crossing” two decades before Trinity. His words contained the prophetic passage, “…in the dry hills down by the river, half withered, we had the hot winds against us.” He could not have imagined the heat to come.

Now close your eyes.

Ignore what you do see to imagine the history you cannot see.

The storms over the mountains. New Mexico Gov. John Dempsey is at home asleep, oblivious to when the blast will occur. Finally, the mists of rain clear. The countdown to fission begins. There’s a sense of dread, however remote, that Earth’s atmosphere might ignite in a cataclysmic chain reaction.

And finally, the detonation.

Man’s first nuclear genie shatters its bottle, unleashing the ferocity of the atom, with an explosion 10,000 times hotter than our sun. Thirty-seven minutes later, the wounded sky brightens again, to the dawn of man’s first atomic sunrise.

Reflect on the glaring omission that while the area surrounding Trinity was remote, it was not unpopulated.

Civilians termed “downwinders,” subjected to radioactive fallout fluttering down from the sky, were assured that the flash and fury some saw and heard was an ammunition explosion at nearby Alamogordo Air Base. After atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki the following month, they realized the stark truth.

Jim Eckles, an Army historian who oversaw decades of Trinity open house events, shared the site’s significance: “The ‘Oppenheimer’ movie resurrected concerns we’ve lost sight of. That thousands of nuclear warhead missiles are still out there, able to launch. We need clever intelligent people to deal with the sequence that began at Trinity.”...'

But vampire crime doesn't pay. In fact, they've bitten off more than they can chew...errr drink. When it's over, our favourite date-raping, frat boy bloodsucker will never be the same.     I am a sucker for Vampires and even more so when they come from a little small press publishing house.  I noticed this thanks to it being recommended to me on ComiXology and I am super pleased that I contacted them and now work with them.  This book keeps getting better and better with each issue, of course that’s supposed to happen reight?  However, I don’t mean in the traditional ways because the way we see the characters develop into these new ones is done in a way that is exceptionally well.  Adaptation and morphing into basically a new life form isn’t something easy but here we see how the influences that surround them work at keeping them in check.     The way that this is being told is exceptionally well done.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented to the reader beautifully.  To see the various arcs going on simultaneously and knowing they will converge at some point builds this great tension.  It also makes the reader anxious for it to happen already and this is the sign of some stellar writing.  The character development I mentioned earlier really is phenomenal stuff.  Whether it’s one person’s narration or how a lone human amidst newly turned teenage vampires what we see and how we see this is just mindbogglingly good.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists & turns along the way we see how everything works together to create the books ebb & flow.     The way this is structured and how it has gone from concept to reality is pretty damn marvellous to see.  I wasn’t exactly expecting a masterpiece when I started reading this but these boys have very quickly turned this into one of today’s MUST reads.  I do like our indentured servant who isn’t popular with the boss’ other employee’s and at first I thought this was his story, now, now I am not so sure and I am thrilled by this turn of events.     The interiors here are absolutely stunning!  To me it looks like it is mixed media, in this case pen/ink and watercolour, which takes this to a whole new level.  The way this can create the mood, tone and feel of any given moment is spectacular to see.  Plus we still get that detail which is so important when it comes to separating them as individuals.  Just how we see the gradation, bleeding, blocking and every other technique you can do with colour makes this as intense, moody and dramatic in ways you have to see to believe.  How we see the hues and tones within the colours utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is impressive.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows such a strong and talented eye for storytelling.  The utilisation of backgrounds is nicely done when we see them, I get some of the reasons we don’t but I would still like to see them utilised more.   ​     This book keeps me on my toes because we have no idea what is around the corner let alone the next page.  Yeah this Vegas so that this should be home to some big wig vampire nest well cover me in honey and slap my arse because it’s just not the place you’d expect them to thrive.  The writing with how this is layered and how we see things evolving is something I URGE you to seek out and experience for yourself.

Classic Buffalo Spotlight: Eckl’s Restaurant

Historic Eckl’s Restaurant, an Orchard Park favorite, has reopened under new ownership. With a fond homage to the formerly family-held business, in operation on and off since 1906, not much will change.

New owners Jim Cornell and Ted Smith saw a place with great bones and a great reputation—they’ve committed to carrying on most of the restaurant’s homey traditions, right down to the name.

As legend has it, the restaurant has been housed in the same structure, and held by someone in the Schroeder/Eckl family since the early 1900s, with several in-family ownership and name changes, temporary closings and even a move of the entire building when the state purchased its former real estate for road construction.

Eckl’s became “Eckl’s” in 1934, when Martha (Schroeder) and Jack Eckl took their turn at operating it. Their son Dale Sr. and his wife Shirley reopened it in late 1964, and ran it for the next 50 years. To answer their faithful customers’ demands, they were open 353 days a year.

With the Eckl family’s blessing, Cornell and Smith will fly the Eckl brand name, and, using the original recipes, prepare the beef and all the old-fashioned German trimmings.

As a bonus, there are actual Eckls still employed at the restaurant—Dale Jr. carves the meat, and his sister Denise is one of the bartenders. They’re familiar faces to locals and regulars who come for the beef-on-weck sandwiches, pork chop dinners, warm potato salad, and relish trays that are the house specialties.

Smith explained the changes that he and Cornell envision; they’ve already brightened and de-cluttered the space, and begun to serve lunch, which hadn’t been done in decades.

“In addition to the loyal Eckl’s customers, we welcome everyone, especially younger people,” said Smith. “We plan to expand the menu—some people may not want beef, pork, or lamb, maybe add a vegan or vegetarian option. They can say, ‘This is not my grandfather’s Eckl’s…this could be MY Eckl’s!’ We want to give them a reason to come back. We’ll be expanding the barroom, and adding a four-season dining patio.”

Touting the “slow-roasted, cap-off Certified Black Angus top round” beef, Dale Eckl Jr. said that he’s happy to be a part of the transition with the new ownership. “This was my second home growing up,” said Eckl. “I was excited to help acclimate customers back. The beef is still consistently high quality. And nothing beats a hand-carved sandwich.”

Vamp #2 Mythos Comics 2017 Created & Written by Jim Eckels Illustrated by Emmanuel Bazin     Sanctus     Julian returns from the Mojave Desert only to learn that the bodies he left burning at the bottom of a 50-foot cliff have disappeared. Human Resources is not happy, Ben is slated for an early checkout, and the newly-undead frat boys come to terms with life after beer.     This is a fantastic book and it's why I scour Artist Alley at conventions or pay attention to what's recommended to me over on Comixology. Some really great books come from these places and this, this is high among them. I am thrilled by this book and what we are seeing here. It has a smart fresh take on the vampire genre and considering everything that's been done before that's saying a whole heck of a lot.     The story & plot development here is excellent as we see how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information. There is a combination of narrative and dialogue that lets us into the story and fills in the gaps of what is happening. This is also how the reader becomes engaged in the story as the power of ones own mind is the kind of tool that will take you places you never thought you could think of. The character development we see here is utterly marvellous as again the narrative and the dialogue do wonders in fleshing out the characters personalities. The pacing is great and as it takes us through the pages while revealing the twists and turns you feel the tension and wonder at these prime opportunities. All of this showcases the way the book is structured and how everything working together creates the ebb & flow of the story.     The idea that monsters live among us is nothing new and no matter how many times we see or read something along those lines we dismiss it as being fiction. However in reality how easy would it be to hide in plain sight? I love to have my mind engaged by a story and add to that the fact that it is engaged on such a philosophical level and that's the moment you know that Jim has more than talent, skill and ambition, the man's one hell of a great writer AND his creativity and imagination is off the charts.     The interiors here are bloody brilliant! The way that we see the attention to detail brought to life utilising this fantastic linework and it's varying weights. The imagery is so damn good and evocative and whether or not it's the vampire population or the human one what we see is brought to life so exquisitely. The composition inside the panels while utilising the backgrounds bring us this gorgeous depth perception, scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this masterful eye for storytelling. When you add in the colour work here it takes the visuals to a whole new level. The way that we see hues and tones within any given colour to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is truly divine stuff. The way that floor waxed and how shadows dance across it, le sigh. Also that sex scene is amazingly powerful, now I wanna see Julian with a man that way! ​     Julian has a date with destiny, okay not really but instead with Ben, the little brother of one the guys at the bachelor party from last issue. I am eagerly awaiting to see how their relationship starts and where it goes because I am picturing this kid to be a lot smarter and useful than anyone anticipates and that alone is worth it's weight in salt.

Vamp #1 Mythos Comics 2016 Created & Written by Jim Eckles Illustrated by Emmanuel Bazen     What Happens in Vegas     It's just another night on the job for Julian Smith, driving his boss's girl to her next flesh gig. Things get messy when Sara decides to devour a particularly handsy pack of frat boys. Sigh. No rest for the wicked...or their employees. It's gonna be a long night.     For those of you who don't know my process I get an advance look at what Previews has coming out and I make my list accordingly. Sometimes they have new books like this that I have never seen before, also when I am on ComiXology sometimes they recommend books that I may like and generally they are right. So either way I am exposed to a number of books that are not considered mainstream and I am so thankful for that. Turns out this is on ComiXology and it was a digital long before it was a physical so there's a place you too can check it out.     One look at this and I was hooked because that first page is everything I wanted it to be and then some. The artwork is brilliant and the narration well that's just plain old interesting. I am something of a snob when it comes to the interior artwork that I like and the way we see the backgrounds and how we see the characters is stunning. So yes the opening is what catches the readers' eye, attention and imagination so that we have that over desire to see and know more. I mean the dialogue between the woman and the driver well that's spectacular writing and it says there's history there and there's no love lost either. So their relationship is one we want to know about.     The way that this is being told is fantastic! The story & plot development and the character development that we see here as they weave their way around, through and become a part of each other is beautifully done. When the pacing picks it all up as it moves everything forward well that's a definite TKO. When the action starts and we see what she's supposed to be versus who she is well I gotta say that I'm a future NFL player kid is a jerk and kind of deserves what he gets to a degree but I really wanted Derek to survive this poor guy. I am way ahead of myself here but ya know what that's what happens when I type with the book open.     So the linework we see really is gorgeous and I love seeing how the varying weights are being utilised. Now I know what Emmanuel is capable of so there's no excuse for lack of backgrounds and open panels. Yes the art definitely looks different from the backgrounds to the characters and together I kind of like that more than I should. Also I like the range of skill that it all shows off because that's some serious talent. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a superb eye for storytelling. I'm a fan of the colour work as well. There is some nice utilisation of light sources to create shading and shadows. There could be a bit more difference in the hues and tones, especially in the reds, but then in the backgrounds it's all there and in spades. That kid I'm a little sad we didn't see IT. ​     There is some rather sensation storytelling going on here and the way that we are introduced to the characters is utterly delightful. Ben, Julian, his employer and Sarah as well as seeing the event, aftermath and circumstances that lead us to the events to come. This is really strong writing and some darn fine characterisation that includes and utilises the interior artwork to help tell it. Love Vampires? Or just love good storytelling? What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas it isn't called Sin City for no reason after all. I'm super impressed with this and given the chance you will be too!
