'On the 16th of July 1945, J. Robert Oppenheimer and members of the Manhattan Project watched the first-ever nuclear test in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

With Oppenheimer's story being retold in Christopher Nolan's three-hour cinematic epic, fans of the movie and those especially interested in this period of history may want to consider the Los Alamos history tours, including a visit to the Trinity site itself...

So, what Los Alamos history tours exist, when exactly can tourists visit the Trinity site, and what are the costs involved? Here are ten things to know about Los Alamos history tours.

10. Los Alamos Historical Society Offers Several Tours

The Los Alamos Historical Society doesn't just provide occasional tours to the Trinity site but instead provides a range of history tours in Los Alamos. These tours include guided walking tours, group tours/private tours of the Los Alamos historic district, and a homestead driving tour...

9. Public Tours To The Trinity Site Are Only Available For Two Days Annually

Unfortunately, public tours to the Trinity Site are rare. The site is closed off to the public for almost the entire year, with the exception of two days. In 2023, the Los Alamos Historical Society will, again, provide its popular two-day excursion to the Trinity Site on the 21st and 22nd of October...

Note: While the coach used to take visitors to the Trinity Site has room for 56, the tour is limited to 35 passengers for the purposes of distancing and comfort. The coach is restroom-equipped.

8. The Trinity Site Public Tours Are Expensive

Trinity tours do not come cheap. Looking at prices for fall 2023, all Los Alamos Historical Society members can take part in the tour while staying in a double occupancy room for $650. Ticket prices rise to $750 per person in the case of non-members who are happy to stay in a double occupancy room.

However, members and non-members alike can pay an additional $140 to stay in a single room instead. In general, tickets include lodging, entrance fees, a guide, transportation, and two lunches.

7. Tourists May Want To Visit The Los Alamos History Museum & Shop

The Los Alamos Historical Society also features a historical museum & shop. As of August 2023, the Los Alamos History Museum & Shop is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday, and from 10:00am to 4:00pm every Saturday.

The building was first erected in 1918 as an infirmary before a Los Alamos Ranch School guest cottage. In the years of the Manhattan Project, those being 1943 to 1947, this structure served as the guest quarters of General Leslie R. Groves. Groves was the commander of the Manhattan Engineer District at the time...

4. The Los Alamos Historical Society Offers Exhibits

The Los Alamos Historical Society provides a mix of real-world temporary exhibits and continual online exhibits.

For starters, as of fall 2023, the Rotating Exhibit Gallery in the Guest Cottage is currently exhibiting 'Opening Doors: The Oppenheimer House Past and Future'. This provides visitors with the chance to go behind the scenes of the Oppenheimer House.

Next, there is the Municipal Building Gallery which features smaller exhibits focused on Los Alamos history...

3. Lectures Take Place At Fuller Lodge

Fuller Lodge in 2132 Central Avenue has hosted monthly lectures in recent times from 7:00pm (unless otherwise stated)...

Some of the lectures that took place within the last year (as of August 2023) are 'The British Mission to Los Alamos with Alan Carr', 'In The Question Of J. Robert Oppenheimer with Bruce Held', and 'Groves and Oppenheimer: Friends And Foes? with James Kunetka'...

2. Los Alamos Historical Society Publishes A Blog

The Los Alamos Historical Society also publishes a blog that may interest Manhattan Project history buffs and fans of the Oppenheimer movie.

The society's website blog has recently featured posts such as 'Deaths in Los Alamos During the Manhattan Project,' and 'Transportation and Preparation for the Atomic Bombs.'

The former is an especially interesting and quite shocking read with deaths occurring during the project due to the handling of the Demon Core, accidental firing of a weapon, and construction-related accidents...

1. The Oppenheimer House Featured In The Movie

Much of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (2023) was filmed in Los Alamos and Santa Fe, along with surrounding locations in 2022. Among the historical Manhattan Project buildings to feature in the biographical epic. Of course, this is not the only standout former movie set location in the U.S. southern wilderness.

J. Robert Oppenheimer and his wife Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer Vissering lived and raised their family here during these historical years.
