Carry On Through the Ages (all the way back to Ancient Egypt)

"A Prophesied Rivalry:

This painting, remarkably well-preserved, was recovered from the tomb of a previously unknown and as-yet unidentified woman of significant power, whose rediscovery has fascinated Egyptologists. Historical analysis suggests she was believed to possess a gift for prophecy, and this artwork is very likely an attempt to illustrate one of her visions.

Here, she and her husband are depicted championing their son, who faces an outsider in combat. The outsider is also supported by an enigmatic figure of seemingly great power, foretelling a great struggle between two mighty forces, though whether these forces were meant to be supernatural or more mundane is not clear.

The dog shown, intriguingly, held a place of honor within the family and was found interred in a nearby chamber. The cat's presence, however, remains enigmatic, as the "Cats vs Dogs" reputation cultivated by these domesticated animals today is not something observed elsewhere in Ancient Egyptian artwork. Noted Egyptologists Miriam Blackwood and Theodore Langston have half-jokingly speculated that its inclusion was a mere artistic preference, hinting at the painter’s fondness for cats."

I've always loved Ancient Egyptian art, ever since childhood. I've wanted to do something like this ever since I first read of Baz's ancestry, so @carryonthroughtheages seemed the best excuse to dabble in this ancient art style.

I talked to @monbons about it and apparently the stars and planets were in alignment that day, because she agreed to collaborate with me. She’s created some absolutely gorgeous fiber art to go along with Natasha’s prophecies. And then she surprised me with a Baz doll, because she is amazing. (I love him so much and we are going to look at fashion books together. It’s going to be awesome.)

I finally got to draw figure-skating-Snowbaz! In all sincerity, I could not have a better writer to partner with than the incredibly talented Harrie! They ran with my seedling of an idea, and they are building a story that has a lot of heart and depth, and is basically everything I hoped for. It's so incredible when you find someone who not only shares your vision but expands and improves on it with this kind of passion and skill. I am so excited to keep working on this with you, Harrie! Thank you for being as enthusiastic about figure skating boys as I am XD

Summary:

This is it, I think to myself. This is the fresh start I wanted. I’ve left all the stress of Agatha and the press and stupid Baz back in the UK. I can really build something here and enjoy the next few months without any drama.

Pairs ice skating champion Simon Snow is looking for a fresh start. After skating with (now ex) girlfriend Agatha for almost 10 years, Snow has no idea who he is alone or what he wants to do with his life. So he’s going to America to star in a tv show about ice skating, leaving all the drama behind.

The last thing he’s prepared for is to spend the next four months sharing a rink, a hotel and a tv studio with rival skating champion Baz Pitch.

Welcome to the second fic I’ve written for @carryon-reverse-bang this year. Snow On Ice is inspired by this enthralling artwork from @iamamythologicalcreature ♥️ I loved the dynamic captured in this image, of Baz being so confident and teasing while Simon tries to keep up with him. It has accidentally sparked a multi-chapter fic which keeps growing every time I work on the outline!!

Massive thanks to @iamamythologicalcreature for not only inspiring this, but being there for spitballing ideas, sending ice skating videos and offering some great editing notes. Apparently I am incapable of writing a short fic, so this one is multi chapter. The second chapter is already way longer than the first, and I’m only part way through my plan for it 😅 So far I’ve got the outline for the first 9 chapters and I’m going to do my best to get on a semi-regular posting schedule of at least a chapter a month.

*Aiden, Dev, and Niall, circa Chapter 1 of "More Than a Footnote"

I was so excited to get Heath for this year's Snowflake Exchange! Not only are they a dear friend, but they're also one of my favorite writers. This felt serendipitous, honestly, because I'd been wanting to draw these three since early in July, and had been sitting on this image of them in my head for months. Truly, there are so many juicy, gorgeous scenes to choose from in this fic, but I wanted to include Aiden, because I love him too.

So, Heath, I know you didn't ask for fanart of your Dev and Niall, but I hope you don't mind it XD More Than a Footnote has become one of my favorite fics of all time, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to take one of the images your prose put into my head and bring it to two-dimensional life.

2024 Round-Up and Review

2024, aka The Year I Discovered I Love Drawing Baz With Long Hair.

But also.

Honestly?

(Yeah, I'm going to be honest. Yeah, it's going to be a long post. Buuuut it's my blog, so here we go!)

This past year was rough. Really rough. In many ways as difficult as 2020, and in some ways, even harder than that. I lost my specialized medical care after 2023, and my health tanked in 2024. Medication changes, chronic illness/pain, and the hardest thing of all was... this idea I seemed to have that if I could just fake it enough, I could make it. Like I could deny my disability into non-existence. Pretend it away.

Instead, I ended up pushing myself past the breaking point, with the worst possible timing ever.

And THEN (when I desperately needed to stop and rest), I packed up my life and moved across a continent. (I hadn't moved since college. So I thought I'd move and it'd be done. That was wrong. Ahem. I'm still moving in...)

But the GOOD that happened last year came in the form of friendship. That's not just a line. My friends were my lifeline. To those friends who stuck it out with me even when things were far from easy, thank you. You are the most incredible people I know, and your friendship has given me reasons and opportunities to feel joy and hope where I might not otherwise have done.

Okay. So. The ROUND-UP is... *drum roll*... Under the cut!

At first I was a bit bummed to see I'd only finished 9 pieces of art during the entire year. But since I am being honest... I know I did my best, and so clearly the best I could do last year was nine pieces of art. So many of those pieces were attached to amazing projects, though! I got to do several collaborations with some truly amazing human beings, and I also got to run my very first fest for the fandom! So I'm calling it good.

January: Oh my God, January. I didn't finish anything in January, but I worked on a lot.

February:

Tis better to give than to receive - This was my contribution to Erotic Grope Fest, and it was my first time doing anything NSFW. It's pretty tame, all things considered, but I think it still fit the mission. Also ended up posting a high-res version of this on AO3. Because. I mean. Come on. XD

March:

Three lost boys (found) - I started out as a beta reader for @mooncello's inspired take on Neverland, but by the time I received chapter 2 I was very nearly begging to be able to illustrate it. I'd had this particular image in my mind after reading the matching scene in chapter one, but had tried to suppress the inspiration. Silly me. I'm so glad I gave in. This is a favorite of mine.

April:

Keeping Neverland - (Technically posted on Tumblr in May, but on AO3 in April, so...) Illustrating @mooncello's writing again, and this one was a challenge! But one I wholeheartedly embraced. I wanted to echo Baz's journey as an artist with my illustrations, so where I used pencil sketching for the chapter one illustration, I went for a finished charcoal drawing, here. Digital charcoal, it turns out, can be just as difficult as the real deal. Slightly less messy, though. (I'm very proud of this finished piece.) Also where I continued my exploration of Baz's long hair. XD

May:

A rough sketch for a rough night - It feels a little off to be posting this sketch in my art round-up, considering the emotional inspiration, but truth be told I ended up liking this sketch quite a lot. I also learned a couple things, from both the events of that night (not my finest moment) and the drawing of the sketch (hey putting my feelings into art is a good idea). So I think ultimately this little sketch deserves to be included on this list.

June:

Teenage Dream - I posted this on Tumblr in June, for my birthday, but I actually did the art at the beginning of the year for the Valentine's Day exchange on the Carry On server. I rarely finish anything to this degree, and am immensely proud of it. That said, I ended up using it for so many things last year, I'd be okay to not look at it again for awhile. (I called it "Teenage Dream" because it made me think of a daydream Baz might have had as a teenager - now made real with Simon by his side. Cause I'm a sucker for their romance >.> )

Illustration from The Eternal Life of Baz Pitch - So I'm not sure how I got lucky enough to earn a special preview of @monbons's story, but I knew I couldn't read it in pieces. So she let me read the whole thing. It was very cool. I read it all at once I think? And when I was done I crashed Monica's DMs to yell at her about it. But then I drew this picture. (While I was chatting with her, even, and casually asking her about cherry blossoms so I could draw them the way she imagined them. It was very fun.) Now we're friends. XD (Check out the fic - now posted in entirety!)

July: Uh. Migraines. Just migraines. I had to pull back from the fandom a lot, and stopped participating in a lot of online activities. Boo.

August: Sketched concepts for CORB, and packed.

September: I moved over 4000 miles.

October: Everything I worked on in October ended up debuting in...

November:

Carry On Through the Ages! Okay, as stressed and sick as I was, I have no regrets about taking on COTTA. It was AMAZING. So much wonderful content! It was SO GOOD to contribute to the fandom, and to do that with history geeking? Dream come true. I also dipped into my previous area of expertise (picture manipulation) and did some cursed paintings to promote it. Mona Baz, Stormchaser Gothic, Mademoiselle Wellbelove, and Iconic Icon Simon.

A Prophesied Rivalry - Another dream come true was collaborating with @monbons for COTTA! I loved talking ideas with her, and she was so supportive when I hit road blocks, too. I love Ancient Egyptian art, and this was as much a love letter to that ancient art style as it was to my beloved Snowbaz. (I did a ridiculous amount of research to do this piece.) (And now I have Egyptian Baz and Simon in my new apartment. Extreme Bonus.)

Snow on Ice Illustration - Getting paired with @leithillustration for CORB was like winning the creative collaboration lottery. Not only did they grasp my concept from the get-go, but they've taken it in a creative and exciting direction. Also, we've become good friends, which is the very best possible outcome for a collaboration. (You should check out their story if you haven't already!)

(Snow-kitty also got very sick at the end of November, which halted a lot of my progress on some WIPs. It was scary for a bit, but I am so happy to say he has fully recovered.)

December:

Snowflake Exchange presents More Than a Footnote - I kind of love that I started the year illustrating one of @mooncello's stories, and ended it with an illustration from another! I was so excited to pull Heath's name from the proverbial hat for the exchange. I'd wanted to draw something from More Than a Footnote since the first time Heath told me about it. I completely love Dev and Niall at this point, so I hope to play with them some more in the future! (BTW Heath I think you're one of my muses hope that's okay XD)

SO. Yeah, the year was often a hard one, but a lot of good happened in spite of all the bad. The good was even more valuable for daring to happen in the midst of so much blah. (And boy howdy, did I get a lot of material to learn from.)

In 2025, I think I'm going to focus more on accepting my limits. Like, I can still work on improving my health and functionality, but I really need to try and determine when I need to stop. That has its own learning curve, but I have to start somewhere! I'm also working on vision therapy, which I'm doing on my own since I can't afford the out-of-pocket expense. Still... So far, so good. Fingers crossed!

Creatively, I think 2025 will be the year where I get to work on projects I started in 2023 and 2024, and I find that quite exciting because those are ideas I genuinely loved. I also hope to bring some other ideas I've had for a very long time to life. (Finally.) I hope, hope, hope! And hey, if I get to do more collabs? That would be awesome, too. (Carry On Through the Ages will be returning, as well!)

Keeping Neverland

Sometime after my fourth Neverland dream, I started to draw sketches. Whatever I could remember from my dreams. Everything I could remember. Drawing became preservation and sanctuary. Once captured onto paper, I’m able to return to Neverland whenever I want, simply by flipping through my sketches. It isn’t the same, but it’s something. Something tangible, in a way my dreams are not.

(I can't believe it's taken me a month to post the art from chapter 2 of this beautiful, beautiful fic, but here it is at last! Of course, it's been viewable inside the story this whole time so if you haven't seen it yet... well. Ahem. XD)

Keep reading below the cut for some extra info on what went into this particular illustration!

One of the things that got my attention from the get-go - not just as a reader, but as an illustrator - was Baz's artistic side within his story. He develops his talent for visual art almost out of necessity; he has no other way to record his adventures in Neverland, and thus preserve them in something less flimsy than his memory.

And, in particular, I was drawn to how Heath writes his artistic journey. In Chapter 2, he states, via the narrative, that he began working in graphite, but by the age of 15, charcoal was his preferred medium. (It's written far more eloquently than that, but I don't want to spoil your reading experience...)

It was (is) very important to me that I do my best to illustrate that side of Baz's artistic journey as best I can. And thus, the illustration from Chapter 1 is very much a pencil drawing, with sketchy elements, and in Chapter 2, I've used (digital) charcoal. (I did use actual charcoal for a couple of the sketches that surround him on the bed, though.)

I'll do my best to stay with Baz as he explores new artistic mediums, and we'll both push ourselves to be the artists we need to be to somehow (somehow!) help Baz find (and keep) the boy of his dreams. XD

What the WIP Wednesday am I doing?

Okay, sooo apparently everyone is doing WIP Wednesday, today. (Okay maybe not the entire internet, but you know, there's a lot of wipsday action, today.) I thought, "Okay. Sure. I can get lost in this crowd. It's a good crowd."

Cause. Well. I don't usually post art in progress. I'm far too anxious a person to do such a thing. It's fine if it's a sketch that's like... finished as a sketch. But in progress? *gulp*

Well, here goes.

This is what I've been working on, usually when I'm supposed to be working on something else:

I did three sketches. One of which I will endeavor to color and make all nice and pretty. I've already determined it's not going to be the first one. The other two are neck-and-neck and it will likely come down to who has fins I like better. Which will it be? Tender snowbaz or playful snowbaz?

(Either way, I'm very determined to give Simon mermay wings. So that's going to happen come hell or... high water... *ahem*)

Honestly, I just really love merpeople. I'm surprised it's taken me this long to attempt this. The very first thing I ever learned to draw as a little bittle babe was a mermaid. (My teachers did not appreciate my dedication to anatomical accuracy the way I did.) Soooo Mermay? Mermay is a THING? Well, twist my arm, guess I have to snowbaz it.

Baz "That Bitch" Pitch

After I did that sketch of Simon, I thought (naturally) that I'd sketch Baz. Simon was such a sweet character, showing up on the page of my sketchbook with little muss or fuss. Happy to be there.

Then there was Baz.

Fucking Baz. Baz, who couldn't just let me doodle him. Oh, no. No, I had to get him right. And he refused to be drawn the same way I did Simon, fairly carefree and loose-lined. Baz has standards. I barely got away with it being a sketch at all. Do you see how he's looking at me? Honestly.

I have to be done now, though. (No, you don't get a detailed jacket in this one, Baz. Sorry not sorry. Get back in my fanfic and we'll talk.)

COC Day 17: Fluff

"It's so...fluffy..."

For this @carryon-countdown prompt I wanted to draw Big Brother Baz because I adore him being a big brother. Fluffy just turned to fluffy dress in my head soon after that.

I can imagine Baz helping Mordelia find the right gown for her Leavers Ball, someday. Before they can try the dresses she actually likes they first have to try out the one Daphne picked out.

I imagine it goes something like this:

Baz: You look beautiful, Delia. *apologetically*

Mordelia: I look like a sherbert dessert or something.

Baz: Also true.

Mordelia: It's so... fluffy. How am I supposed to move in this?

Baz: Elegantly?

Mordelia: *gives him an unimpressed look*

Baz: .... I'll tell Daphne it didn't fit. Shall we continue shopping?

Hi Barbie!

Happy Halloween from the Barbie Boys!

I had the ridiculous notion to spontaneously draw Simon and Baz in Barbie Halloween costumes. I spent some time considering who would be Barbie, and who would be Ken, but they both wanted to be Barbie.

This went back and forth for a bit, until Simon pointed out that "Barbie and Ken aren't even a couple really! Not according to Barbie."

"Unrequited love is tragic, Snow."

"Come off it, Baz, it's not a bloody love story, is it, and Ken isn't actually in love. It's all part of the role for him, yeah?"

"If you're working your way to a point, skip to it."

*heavy put upon sigh* "The story's about realizing your identity!"

*the eyebrow* (and a smirk) (Baz is totally loving this - you know he is)

"Sooooo. Which one do you identify with, Baz?" (wearing a huge grin, of course, because Simon knows Baz is loving this)

And thus, they both dressed as Barbie. Baz as Weird!Barbie, who doesn't fit in with the other Barbies. And Simon is Stereotypical!Barbie, held up as an idealized version of everything Barbie should be.

Not that I put a ton of thought into this or anything. >.>

"Maybe... Maybe a couple times a day."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY @facewithoutheart! I didn't actually plan this, but I drew this picture over the weekend because I loved your fanfic and that imagery completely stuck with me. And then WHAT it's your BIRTHDAY? How cool is THAT? So I dressed it up a bit and now it's a birthday gift! XD

This is a bit of fanart for a scene in the last chapter of "Boulders Turn Into Sand," which you should immediately go read right now if you haven't already. I waited until it was finished to read it all (I'm delicate sometimes *ahem*) and getting to read it straight through was such a treat!

This bit of imagery from the last chapter really stuck with me, so I knew I had to draw it. (Actually, @facewithoutheart posted this snippet on a wipsday I think, and it's what made me hop over to AO3 and get reading in the first place.) I just adore Simon and Baz in this. The whole thing, I mean. But also this scene. <3

“You know, you haven’t said it.” He picks at the collar as we walk to our favourite restaurant. “You’ll stretch the fabric.” I swat his hand away. “And said what?” He kicks a rock, scuffing his good leather boots. (I let it go.) “That you love me.” “Of course I love you.” Simon kicks another rock. “You know I love you.” He shrugs. “Simon.” I thread my fingers through his and oh. The blush that blooms over his cheeks makes his freckles stand out like sunlight glinting off precious gems. “I love you.” Using his other hand, he pulls up the collar to hide his chin and mouth, stretching out the fabric irrevocably. No one else will ever be able to wear it. (I can still see his blush.) Good. “Does it help to hear it, love?” His nose rubs against the cotton blend when he nods. “I’ll say it, then. Every day.” “Maybe,” the words come out muffled through the fabric covering his mouth, “maybe a couple times a day.” Finally, he pulls the collar back under his chin, making these next words come out clear. “Just until I’m used to it.”

SOME ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS (below the cut)

I have a special place in my broken heart for Simon's struggle after losing his entire identity at the end of Carry On. (The fact that Baz and Penny would argue that statement is part of the struggle.) It's not just that he has wings and a tail. Actually, those aren't the biggest problem. What they are, however, is a constant and completely inescapable reminder that keeps him aware, every single fucking second he's conscious, of what he isn't. Can't be. Has been. Isn't anymore. Will never be again. As long as he has those, he's not really ANYTHING. He's not a magician. Not a Normal. He can't belong anywhere. He's just… some sort of… creature.

(FTR, I'm pro-wings and tail. But then, I don't have to live with them.)

I did a thing. A sketchy thing. A Simony-sketchy thing. I was then told by an expert in the field to post it. So I am doing a second thing and posting it.

(I like doing sketchy things, though I don't often post them because they're all sketchy and unfinished. But then I realized the world would probably be better if more artists posted more sketches and thus... TA-DA.)
