261: Joey Alexander
The Third Story Podcast
I really enjoyed this podcast, Leo Sidren asks really interesting questions.
The podcast was recorded just in advance of the release of Joey Alexander's new album--his seventh!--Continuance. Four of the songs feature Theo Croker playing trumpet. Alexander rather matter-of-factly remarks that Croker "posesses the mystic," which seems very apt. Two of the songs on the album are covers, the Methodist hymn, "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," and "I Can't Make You Love Me" written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin.
Joey Alexander is twenty now and you can see he shaves whiskers. Something I was very curious about was what rendition of "I Can't Make You Love Me" he heard. I wondered if he heard Bonnie Raitt's 1991 version with Bruce Hornsby's beautiful piano?
It turns out it was Bonnie Raitt he heard. And he said that when he first heard it he new one day he wanted to do the song too. He also talked about listening to singers more of late. Luther Vandross "A House Is Not a Home" was one song he mentioned and Burt Bacharach's songbook.
I was delighted to hear Joey Alexander talk. He's brilliant and has so many ideas. I am happy he's in the world now and hope he lives long and prospers.
