The Hives – Brooklyn Steel – October 30, 2023

The Hives’ sixth studio album — and first in more than a decade — the well-received The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons, dropped this past August and the band’s been out on the road since before it was even released. Back in NYC on Monday night, the Swedish garage-rockers kicked off the North American leg of their world tour with a sold-out show at Brooklyn Steel.

Juliana of Hesse-Eschwege was described as a great beauty but there are no portraits of her. The portrait shown is of her mother.

Juliana was taken to the royal Swedish court to be brought up there as the future queen of Sweden by queen dowager Hedwig Eleonora of Holstein-Gottorp, with the prospect of being married to her cousin, Charles XI, when he reached adulthood.

These plans never came about. In 1672, during a carriage ride in Stockholm with the queen dowager, Juliana fell to the floor of the carriage in labour. The father of the child proved to be a married officer of the court, Count Gustaf Lillie. The count was exiled, and Juliana was sent to the country, where she was given her own estate and court. The child, a son, was named after his father, Gustaf Gustafsson Lillie, was later raised by Baron Gustaf Adolf von der Osten. His fate is unknown.

The estate Juliana was sent to was run by a Dutch housekeeper named Marchand, who was the widow of a grocer, and she had a son, Johan Jakob, with him. This would be the second time Juliana became pregnant out-of-wedlock. In 1679, Juliana's cousin, King Charles, gave her his permission to marry her lover, who was given the title Baron von Lilienburg. They married on 22 February 1680 in Sweden.

The couple moved far away from the Swedish court to the Netherlands, where Johan was offered a government position in IJsselstein by Stadtholder William III, who was distantly related to Juliana. The couple had eight children. Juliana died in IJsselstein in 1693, followed by Johan 1703.

I found Juliana interesting because her mother had a similar scandal to hers: After her wedding to Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse-Eschwege, Eleonora confessed before her husband, "on her knees", that she had had a six week affair with French lute-player Beschon, and was pregnant with his child. Frederick decided to act like nothing happened and hide the matter, but it became a known scandal.

Beschon wrote a composition to Eleonora which he sent her along with a letter dated 28 February 1647, but she gave it to her brother; these documents are now preserved in the Stegeborg collection.

Marina Cyrino is a Brazilian flutist and sound artist based in Berlin. She works in the fields of improvisation, composition and performative installations. Her flute playing is characterized by singular techniques developed through the use of internal amplification. The rhythmic use of the flute, the extensive use of objects and balloons attached to the instrument, and the use of disassembled flute parts are other distinctive elements of her playing. She is a member of the Brazilian experimental music label Seminal Records.

Alexander Markvart - is a musician, member of theater projects and organizer of events and festivals. Born on January 5, 1987 in Kemerovo. Now based in Berlin. He is a notable figure on the Russian new improvised and experimental music scenes. Uses in many projects and performances a wide range of musical instruments: as quite common - piano, guitar, accordion, saxophone, trumpet, analog synthesizers, electric drums, flute, laptop, etc., and also various objects, wires, appliances, etc. Stylistically he works in a lot of musical genres from radical free improvisation, EAI, noise, hardcore, to well-structured projects, minimal techno and post-folk.

Founder of such polystylistic musical formations as Studio of Unconscious Music (SUM) and Siberian Improvisation Company (SIC!). Also in different years is a member of another experimental bands and projects - Sacrifices, Verevka, Radical Muzak Septet, MITLO, Klub Demboh, Inorganic Blossoming, PSVSV, Cherubs, Importunate Twins, Sekta Phoenix. Works and plays concerts in various projects with different musicians such as: Axel Dörner, Lucio Capece, Burkhard Beins, Mazen Kerbaj, Joke Lanz, Adam Asnan, Jonas Kocher, Fire! (Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling, Andreas Werliin), Ilia Belorukov, Joel Grip, Nick Sudnik, Michel Doneda, Bryan Eubanks and with many others.

Javier Areal Vélez (Buenos Aires, 1985) is an experimental music composer, improviser and curator. His recent work focuses on the coding of digital companions for the performance of live improvised music. Javier's electronic music develops around noisy polyrhythms of extra-human complexity to make the most deformed audiences move. He researches human+machine collaborations through the use of samples, synthesis, lights, and mechanical robots. Additionally, Javier has a long career as performer of prepared electric guitar. His characteristic style relies heavily on a primal technique that emphasizes timbre and rhythm over traditional forms, favoring intensity and dynamic contrast. Javier has released records on labels worldwide and has collaborated with artists such as Heiner Goebbels, Audrey Chen, Chris Pitsiokos, Violeta García, Brian Chase, Shayna Dunkelman and Jorge Espinal. He is a member of CALATO, KYSE and VVU and wrote commissions for ensambles Híbridx, Rotativo and Tempi. Over the past decade, Javier has performed extensively in Argentina and toured across South and North America, Europe and Japan. Javier is the founder and director of RUIDO Experimental Music Festival (active since 2017), and he coordinates the Sound Arts Center (CASo) of the Secretary of Culture of Argentina.

We felt humbled by the request to direct this important talk for such a big event. Being a pretty lengthy script, packed with information and data that all felt equally important to communicate, it was almost like having a seven and a half minute script with only headlines that deserved and screamed for the same attention. There’s not a dead second in this talk, therefore it was with both excitement and a healthy amount of intimidation we took on the task.

Directing a collaborative project isn’t always easy. You need to put a lot of trust in your partners, not only to deliver in time but also that what they do deliver will match with all the other parts. In many ways, it can be compared to laying a 10’000 piece jig-saw puzzle. There’s so many different elements that need to fit together: colors, textures, patterns, stroke thickness, timing, etc. We solved that, both by doing a good chunk of the animation in-house, but also by handling all the compositing, to be able to have control over the final look.

The aesthetics we landed were a strong, gritty collage-style to portray the seriousness of the speech. It is still colorful, but with a dominant fiery signal orange and yellow on top of a dark cold gray. The textures work as a manifest of tactility and creativity and brings a kind of guerrilla-style feel to the communication. It’s packed with paper cut-outs and rips, grainy Xerox photocopies, silkscreen prints, and expressive charcoal and pen sketches.
