Are you still open to Orville requests?
I am! If you have any Orville requests please send them. Especially if they have to do with our dear captain, although I will of course write for others too, my Seth McFarlane crush is going hard at the moment.

alex talked about that recently in this interview! [rubs hands together like a mischievous little shrimp] i hope we see it one day heh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hehehe it was a fun task! we've NEVER seen alex play such a character during a task like that — he's received cuddles and made demands and eaten meals, but this was next level Alex Acting — so that was really fun!
lucy talking incessantly about alex's legs but mans also got his long sparkly toes
Tumblr media
i think people are too quick to call this or that iconic, but ngl the second i saw this final image...it's practically a horror movie poster...PERFECT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
can you imagine greg davies being your drama teacher and then he quits to become a comedian and the next day you see him on tv as Massive Greg hand feeding a man with no teeth who is pretending to be a tortoise
Tumblr media Tumblr media
honestly if that's the one that haunts you i'd say you got off pretty easy, i scrub my eyes with concrete mix every night to try and forget ass sandwich and yet... but hey at least when he hurt his hand he finally had an excuse for that stupid bandage he wears hahaha
Tumblr media
she was being so sincere and he was Such A Little Shit 😭
you know what i was binging some simon stuff as well, since it was his birthday, and ran across this again after all these years!
Tumblr media
aw anon i'm so glad ♡
moooost of my fave episodes are like ~2005–2015ish? probably the nostalgia!
21.01 with jess hynes bc she is an icon to me
21.05 love seeing simon and miquita together
21.07 with martin freeman
22.02 with stephen fucking fry YES
22.04 was crazy like conchords-era rhys darby was there (i LOVED flight of the conchords lmao) and then johnny vegas and danny dyer next to each other? what a lineup
22.12 with josh groban, omid, martin freeman, heston is an ALL-TIME CLASSIC
i LOVE the guest-hosted episodes with martin freeman, rhod gilbert, frankie boyle (especially 24.12 with miles jupp and professor green), jack dee, alex horne, kathy burke, and johnny vegas
23.12 doctor who special HANDS DOWN
24.02 it's hilarious how respectable catherine tate is offset by how ridiculous catherine tate is
25.06 when greg hosted with frankie boyle, h was there just being h, holly walsh angel, it was a riot
john barrowman is also extremely iconic on buzzcocks, probably most so on 19.05 but also when he hosted 25.12
there are tons of older episodes from the lamarr era that i love — bob mortimer is so funny on this series especially on sean's team, 12.05 when jimmy and claudia were with phill, fun to see ian dury on 5.01, and so on — but these above are some of my personal all-time faves!
Tumblr media
aw i really appreciate the rec! first i would like to say i looked it up on youtube and stumbled across the american version and holy shit the dude who hosted brainsurge on nickelodeon is hosting that and WOW my brain would have died never having remembered he existed if i hadn't seen him just now — so that was very weird. ANYWAYS i'll check it out!

imo it didn't start with ben miller...rob is always like this... sometimes when the pod episodes are shorter (less than 10min? does he do that anymore), you can tell some of the bullshit is edited around, but now that they're longer-form conversations he is dominating every episode. i'm certainly no rob hater, but it's really unsurprising to me because facts are facts — rob is self-involved, extremely concerned about being seen and being heard, incredibly pouty if not outrightly bitter when he's not recognised, when fame/success doesn't chase him, when he's getting less from life than he believes he deserves. there are aspects of rob in the trip that aren't far from reality, if you see what i mean. rob is, honestly, quite showbiz. don't get me wrong, he's funny, affable, talented, we love him! but he's not a stellar podcast host because he doesn't have the attention span to let someone else have a moment. have a story. put something on the table. there are definitely times i give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he's trying to form a connection by sharing a related experience/feeling/whatever, but other times he's just being self-involved, pivoting the convo, and it is what it is. it's too bad when we don't always get lengthy, insightful content for someone we love — like miles, let's say — and when we finally do rob isn't doing his part; i felt that way about the dara episode. i don't think rob means any malice, it's just how he is...+ a dash of being a middle-aged white man in showbiz...
Tumblr media
i got this one yesterday...
Tumblr media
...and i'm going to dedicate it to you<3
and frankly sign me up for the woz/vcm experience i am happy to be a little tomato in that flapjack sandwich
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you guys are really sweet, it makes me smile ♡ i don't know why some days the trolling can really get to you and other days you forget it in a couple blinks... i feel like i've been having some bad days. last week i saw something on my own dash with thousands of notes outright mocking me and i haven't really recovered from the uncomfortableness/just general hurt feelings. i want be better about letting those things go, but i also think a holiday break will do me good. anyways, thank you for always enjoying the blog and taking the time to be so kind ♡

((Session 51 is wrapped!))
Lex’s player was unable to make it tonight due to allergies and medication, so she’ll just be along for the ride tonight.
The session begins with the party ‘waking up’ at the Night Gate from nIGHTS: Journey of Dreams, with most of them having failed their previous session’s Will save against Bagelby’s custom spell “Bagelby’s Phantasmal Dreamscape”.
This is now the Bagelby Show.
Ena: *gesturing to her 30ft Archfey tree dad whenever Bagelby longs for a father figure*
Bagelby: *suddenly blind*
As Bagelby explained to the party about the dream he’d had the prior night - the one he wanted them all to help him investigate - the scenery began to shift and change around them, replaying that exact dream, but for a word or tow of dialogue that Bagelby couldn’t remember.
Lord Wiggles’ voice claim is Phil LaMarr as John Stewart.
The party very quickly got distracted upon realizing that there were freestanding doors with portraits for every party member within the garden, and Lord Wiggles was temporarily forgotten in favor of invading each other’s dreamscapes.
Ena refused to let anyone else enter her dream door, and when the party pressed, she opened it to prove a point, and a blast of hellfire and tormented screaming engulfed her before she closed it again.
Sir Carl Jaeger imagined a large padlock on his door, and politely told the party not to touch it.
While Bagelby wondered how magic worked in the dreamscape, Ena kicked open Thiori’s dream door and led the charge inside.
Thiori’s dreamscape is a little forest cottage on the coast with a small kitchen, a wall of bookcases, and his glaive, rusty and unneeded, left unattended in the yard.
Then it shifted to a dark, foreboding laboratory, filled with toxic green vials and distant screaming (Krell’s lab).
Both Thiori and Sir Carl Jaeger are feeling watched. Sir Carl feels comforted. Thiori feels threatened.
The landscape shuttled back and forth between the lab and the cabin for a while, freaking Thiori out, before Bagelby got curious about what the backyard of the cabin looked like and opened the back door.
Immediately the party was on a hill overlooking the ocean at sunset, with no sign of the lab, or even the cabin.
Bagelby ran down to the beach to find the perfect skipping rock, and skipped it across the water.
A lighthouse appeared in the water in time for the skipping rock to shatter against it, BotW style, and its light burned through the fog that had suddenly appeared over the water.
The party was then in a large rowboat - with no oars or sail - on the water, moving into the fog as the lighthouse light burned it away to reveal Pirate Island in the distance.
Pirate Island burst into flames in the blink of an eye.
Pirate Island burning down then abruptly became Port Salt, and a fire genasi town being razed by a hostile armored force, and Ena had an emotional breakdown as she was forced to relive the dreamscape she had been trying to avoid.
The dreamscape dumped the party back on the coast, with no sign of the island, the lighthouse, the lab, or the cabin, and with only the door back to the nighttime garden behind them.
As they approached the door, however, the corpse of Ena’s mother appeared to block them.
Asahi picked up a catatonic Ena to try and throw her over the corpse and through the door, but then Bagelby wondered where Maritza had gone/if she’d gotten caught in the spell, too, and the door morphed into a giant Maritza, and Asahi threw her wife right into the mimic’s mouth.
Giant!Maritza ate the rest of the party, and they fell out onto the brickwork of the nighttime garden again.
Only Bagelby is really enjoying this dreamscape.
Ena demanded to be allowed to get some ‘real sleep’, and large, luxurious four poster beds - the same ones they’d had in Kendara during the festival - appeared in the garden in front of their doors.
Thiori leaned over the fountain to examine it, as he could hear running water but see no water, and saw - for just a brief second - a shadowy figure with glowing eyes and two large, down sweeping horns.
The shadow winked at him before vanishing.
Thiori dropped a coin into the fountain, ripped apart his own dream door so that no-one could go back into the laboratory dreamscape, and went to bed.
This may have consequences for him later - I’ll decide later.
Sir Carl Jaeger left an apple on a floating windowsill for his missing squire, Chessifur, and briefly saw a dream-version of his squire toasting him with the apple from the other side of the window before he ‘fell asleep’ and woke up in reality.
Bagelby was the last of the party to fall asleep in the dreamscape, and as he lay back in his bed, he noticed the his door had changed - it now had a stained glass banner beneath his portrait on the arch, which read “A Promise for Dezral.”
He fell asleep and woke up in reality before he could really investigate it.
The party woke up and got ready for their hike across the Emon Crossing Historical Bridge, which they got halfway across before it started raining.
Ena whined until the party stopped under a pedestrian overhang to wait out the weather, though Thiori - power walking at the front of the party - didn’t notice them stopping for a few paces.
As he turned around to go back, an arrow hit the bridge where he’d been standing, and when he turned around to yell at the shooter, he rolled high and caught another arrow mid-air, aiming for his face.
More arrows chased Thiori back to the overhang, and the party was stuck there for a few shots before Bagelby turned Asahi invisible so she could sprint the last half mile to the shooter’s supposed location at the end of the bridge.
The rest of the party decided to make a break for it and use Thiori as a meat shield against any more arrows (Thiori’s idea).
Asahi broke her invisibility to snatch an arrow out of the air and throw it back at the shooter in the same motion.
She shot an elf out of the tree, but before she could confront him. his three party members stepped out of hiding - a sword wielding dwarf, an axe toting Dragonborn, and a staff wielding Hobgoblin.
Ena fired an Eldritch Blast from a distance that hit the archer and the Dragonborn. The elf was knocked head over heels. The Dragonborn barely even flinched.
The archer is now known by the party as “Shooty McTooty”.
I love them, but they won’t respect a single NPC I make.
The rest of the month is hectic for all of us, so we’ll pick up in about two weeks and see how combat goes!

The 14 Creepiest Arrowverse Villains:
Yes, this one should have been made for Halloween. But after the year we just had, let’s take comfort in the fact that were are not forced to ever meet this guys here on the street in the dark. While two of the villains on this list had rather big seasonal arcs, I specifically disqualified characters from here, have proper motivations and character arcs as well as villains, who are creepy but at the same time quite a lot of fun. This why you won’t find Alice, her Mouse, Ramsay, Eobard, the Trickster, Mallus, Neron or even the Thinker here.
This list mainly consists of people we want to put back in the box, they got out of, until not seeing them at least for a season or so, and who we want to yell at: „What’s wrong with you!“ while they are on screen.
 14.  Toyman Senior (Winslow Schott Sr., Supergirl, Henry Czerny)
Tumblr media
Technically this one should not be on this list, because he was redeemed in Season 5, however that happend after his death and on Earth Prime rather than Supergirls Original Eart,h so we will ignore that for now (also I wrecked my head whom from „Supergirl“ to put on here, so I overlooked that on purpose). Toyman is more creepy as a concept than in reality. He blows up kids (and other than the Trickster is no fun at all while he is doing it), threatened the life of his son to get his wife to leave him and did God knows what else to said wife and son. And did not even stop terrorizing people after his death. Can you imagine growing up as Toyman’s son? Poor Winn, you truly deserved better!
 13. Bug Eyed Bandit (Brie Larvan, Queen Bee, The Flash, Arrow, Emily Kinney)
Tumblr media
Yes, it’s because of the Bees. Because she controls Mechanical Bees that sting and kill people! I am sorry, but what’s your problem, can’t you just kill your enemies like a normal person, Brie? Not to mention the whole Felicity-thing, because yes it’s totally normal to go around and kidnap and threaten to get what you want and then try to murder again. I still do not get why they let her into the Young Rogues anyway, but then … most members of that gang were all wrong, weren’t they?
 12. Garfield Lynns (Arrow, Andrew Dunbar)
Tumblr media
Most of us have tried to forget about Season 1 Episode „Burned“ for several reasons. But the villain of it is also one of those. Because, yes Mick was a Pyromanic as well, but for more complex reasons. Garfield Lynns was a fire fighter who started burning people and ended burning himself to death because of reasons and … well let’s be honest, he was nuts and burning people is not cool at all!
 11. Jake Simmons (Deathbolt, Arrow, The Flash, Doug Jones)
Tumblr media
That’s what you get, if you hire a creature actor (no offense, Doug, we love your work!) to play a psychopatic villain. Occasionally kind of fun, yes, but mostly Simmons is crazy and creepy, and we never liked him very much, but crucial Captain Cold killed him with a flimsey excuse, which no one ever bought, and let’s put it that way: If Leonard killed him just like that, there had to be something wrong with him in a big way, and yes, the hints were there, so, yeah, what a creep.
 10. The Mist (Kyle Nimbus, The Flash, Antony Carrigan)
Tumblr media
A former Mob Hitman that looks like that and can turn into Mist. Do I have to say any more? I would take Victor Szasz over this one any day. Because Nimbus … well you would not want to meet him during a misty night, would you?
 9. Murmur (Michael Amar, Arrow, Adrian Glynn McMorran)
Tumblr media
This one actually cares about his grandma, I will give him that, but SOMEONE SEWED HIS FUCKING LIPS TOGETHER! So you don’t really like looking at him, and he kind of went over board after he was pressured into joining Damien Darhk with, you know, killing everyone and joining HIVE, who as you recall planned to end the world as wen know it, so what about everyone elses grandmas, they can just die or what? No, Mister Amar, there is quite a lot wrong with you, that’s for sure.
 8. Everyman (Hannibal Bates, The Flash, Various)
Tumblr media
That one could be a tragedy, but well, he got so mixed up and wrong in the head, that he became a danger to everyone else. He is creepy trapped between shapes and he is creepy in other shapes because … you don’t just go around and kiss random women, who think you are somebody else. That is just wrong. But Bates is kind of mostly wrong, so, yeah.
 7. Anthony Ivo (Arrow, Dylan Neal)
Tumblr media
Ivo is Sara’s Personal Case of #Metoo, which really should be enough to earn him a spot on this list, but there is also his habit of keeping people in cages and the whole „You have to choose, whom I shoot dead!“- thing and all of that is only the tip of the iceberg. Not even Dylan Neal can stop me from wanting to scream at the top of my lungs: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?! at Dr. Ivo.
 6. Nocturna (Natalia Knight, Batwoman, Kayla Ewell)
Tumblr media
We all know the story how Nocturna was not allowed to show up in the Animated Batman Series in the 90s, because she was considered too disturbing (Morbius on the other hand was allowed to show up in the Spider-Man Cartoon but had to … undergo some changes, which made a perfectly good vampire into the creepies cartoon-villain ever unleashed on kids and scarred me for life, but that’s another story). Here she finally is, and yes, she is rather disturbing. Because she acutally knows very well that she isn’t a vampire, but still strings her victims up and bleeds them out, after biting them with laced spikey teeth. It would be kinky, if it were the least bit sexy, which it totally isn’t, so yeah, put her away for good please.
 5. Vandal Savages Hawk Creatures (Legends of Tomorrow, Various)
Tumblr media
Season 1 of „Legends“ was quite different than what came after, but „Night of the Hawk“ was an early highlight. While it was kind of a parody, being Season 1 it still played it straight for the most part, which resulted in an episode with the vibe of „American Horror Story“: We are in on the joke, but it’s still Horror. No wonder, after all Joe Dante directed this one. Vandal Savage turned poor teenagers into hawklike monsters, that no one would want to meet … ever. So yeah, thanks, but no thanks.
 4.      August Cartwright (Ethan Campell, Batwoman, John Emmet Tracy, Sebastian Roche)
Tumblr media
Oh, God, that guy. So his mother wasn’t particulary ... nice, but that is no excuse to kidnap, gaslight, and brainwash a young girl, keep that girl’s mother’s head in a fridge for years, turn said girl into a slave and get her to make facemasks out of actual human face! Nor is that any excuse for fear-gasing your own son just because you are mad at him. Or anything in any way related to face-stealing, ,killing, identitiy theft, or anything else Dr. Cartwright has ever been up to. Like, seriously it has been a long time a character that desevers to be hated that much has been on our televions screens. Creepy Creep!
 3. Duela Dent (Batwoman, Alessandra Torresani)
Tumblr media
Female Slashers have become kind of a common trope in fiction by now, but Duela is kind of different. Suffering from a pretty extreme version of of body dysmorphic disorder Duela sees beauty through a different lense than the rest of the world (we will never forget what she deems to be her face being perfect, even though we desperatly want to). So yeah, she slashes faces, mainly her own, is out to punish people, who force beauty ideals on her and othes, and somehow has no problem with … donating her face to Alice. … Can someone please get that poor woman help, I mean, seriously?!
 2.      Rag Doll (Peter Merkel, The Flash, Troy James, Phil LaMarr)
Tumblr media
He did make Joe West throw up. And not only him. Rag Doll is plains disgusting. So disgusting actually, that the producers dialed him back in Season 6 and used more CG and less pratical „Troy James freaks us out“- bending. But while he could be fun all elongaty, we actually prefer him as his creepy original Season 5 Self. He is demented, wears a creepy mask, acts creepy, and we really don’t want to see him do his stuff but can’t look away at the same time. I have no idea why he was in the Young Rogues either, because he is really mainly creepy – und would be the Overcreep on this list, if it weren’t for….
 1.      The Dollmaker (Barton Mathis, The Broken Doll Killer, Arrow, Michael Eklund)
Tumblr media
I am still amazed to this day that they were allowed to make this episode. You have to remember „Arrow“ had been only on for one Season at this point and „The 100“ was still about to premier. The CW was yet to change it’s image. Still they somehow got to made the Dollmaker-Episode, which left us disturbed to this very day. What Mathis was doing to his victims …. Well not only Quentin got nightmares about it. Poor Laurel went understandable full addict after almost being made into a puppet by him. So, Rag Doll might look creepier, but the Dollmaker is one of this Serial Killers we never want to even hear from again. It’s really no wonder he was an one-off, like I said, I am still amazed they were even allowed to make the episode on Network Television let alone The CW at all.

"Hedy Lamarr's beauty was like music: it inspired emotions even when, as in my case, it kindled no desire. I imagine she was well into her forties at that time, and considered by Hollywood to be over the hills and on the skids. She was tall, which was unexpected in a woman with so fine-boned a face, and it was hard for anyone to look at anything else when she was around, her features were so perfect and symmetrical."  John Fraser

we know Freeman has snails but do any of the others have pets too?
Oh yeah a lot of em have pets! Uh,,,I cant remember off the top of my head what everyone's got but
Tommy has Sunkist. Shes his service dog.
Freeman's got the snails.
Isaac is technically Lamar's owner but she does stay with Barney and Gordon every two weeks. Shes a sphinx.
Bubby to go with Lamarr being a sphinx, has a lykoi.
Coomer owns an axolotl :)
Barney owns a few dart frogs and two hermit crabs. If you count the feral cats he feeds around the Res Cafe then he probably also has like six cats.
Chell and Alyx later own Baja Blast the 2nd, a snail from Freeman named by Benrey
Alyx has Dog but not what you'd expect. Dog is a MIT Mini Cheetah bot bought by Barney himself for her birthday. She named it Dog as a joke and kt stuck.
Benrey has a ferret named Gordon Freeman he kinda just brought home one day and Freeman absolutely despises its name I mean as if there wasn't enough mixing up between he and Gordon, now theres a ferret.
Benrey also befriended a bunch of crows infront of the Res Cafe and they all specifically attack Gman if and when he shows up. Gman is not to be mistaken for G-dad. All my homies hate Gman.
I know at some point I said Gordon is most likely to own a crested gecko but I can't actually remember if that was a pet we decided he had or not fft.
Wheatley has bees but Im not sure you can consider that a pet.
John just has a whole ass farm with his family so you can imagine they have a lot of animals there.
Uhh...I think this is it. One of the other coffee crew members can add on if they remember anything Im forgetting fhdjjd

80 Years Later: Careers Built in Hollywood’s Greatest Year By Jessica Pickens
The year 1939 is often heralded as the most prolific year in Hollywood, yielding the highest quality films released in a single year. Some of the most famous films of all time were first seen by audiences in 1939: THE WIZARD OF OZ, GONE WITH THE WIND, DARK VICTORY and MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON. But outside of these films, 1939 was also important to a number of acting careers. For some actors, they received a role that offered the big break they were waiting on, catapulting them into stardom. Others who were already more established, received roles that helped revitalize their career:
Tumblr media
Olivia de Havilland: Olivia de Havilland started in films in 1935, and while she had several starring roles, she was frustrated that none of them offered the quality that she was looking for. De Havilland often played second fiddle as a romantic partner to the leading man—particularly Errol Flynn. She appeared in five films released in 1939, but it was just one that was the catalyst for enhancing her career: the role of Melanie Wilkes in GONE WITH THE WIND. She fought for the role of Melanie, a stark contrast to the character of Scarlett O’Hara, and it ultimately transformed her career.
Tumblr media
Greer Garson: Greer Garson starred in her first film in 1939 — GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS. The film follows a stuffy school teacher, Mr. Chipping played by Robert Donat, who is disliked by most of his pupils. But when Mr. Chipping meets and marries Katherine, played by Garson, she softens him and teaches him to show more kindness to his students. Garson was reluctant to take the role, because the screen time is brief. However, her role as Mr. Chipping’s wife is important, as it transforms the main character. The film also launched her into stardom and she receive¬d an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress to boot. Garson very quickly became one of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s top stars.
Tumblr media
William Holden: After two uncredited performances, William Holden’s first credited film role came in 1939 and it was a starring role. Holden starred alongside Barbara Stanwyck in GOLDEN BOY. In the film, Holden plays a violinist who wants to become a boxer to help earn his family more money. The issue is that boxing brings the risk of hand injuries, which would prevent him from becoming a fine concert violinist. The film made Holden a stand-out new star of that year.
Tumblr media
Hedy Lamarr: Hedy Lamarr acted in German films but received international attention when she traveled to the United States and starred in ALGIERS (1938). When Lamarr signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, she became one of the studio’s top stars and glamour girls. Her first film under MGM was LADY OF THE TROPICS (1939). Lamarr plays a woman of mixed race –half French, half Asian—who desperately wants to leave French Saigon, or Indochina. She falls in love with and marries rich playboy Robert Taylor, who promises to take her to America, but societal prejudices threatens to ruin their happiness.
Tumblr media
David Niven: As early as 1932, English actor David Niven played uncredited, supporting or other background roles in films. But in 1939, BACHELOR MOTHER offered him his first true leading man role. Niven stars alongside Ginger Rogers who plays a department store worker who ends up with a baby by mistake. Everyone –including Niven—believes Rogers is the mother and encourages her to take responsibility for the baby. After the success of this film, Niven returned to England to serve in the British Army. After World War II, Niven remained a leading man and top star in Hollywood and the UK.
Tumblr media
Basil Rathbone: Basil Rathbone was a star as early as 1930, with roles in top films like ANNA KARENINA (1935), A TALE OF TWO CITIES (1935) and THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938). Rathbone was often a villain and also well-known for his sword fighting prowess. But 1939 offered Rathbone the role of a well-known literary character: Sherlock Holmes. Along with his villainous roles, Rathbone’s Holmes is a character that shapes his legacy. In 1939, Rathbone starred as the fictional private detective in THE HOUNDS OF BASKERVILLE with Nigel Bruce as his Dr. Watson. Together, Rathbone and Bruce reprised their Holmes and Watson roles in 14 films from 1939 to 1946.
Tumblr media
Ginger Rogers: Long paired with dance partner Fred Astaire, in 1939 Rogers co-starred with Astaire for the last time until 1949. The two starred in their only biographical picture together, THE STORY OF VERNON AND IRENE CASTLE, about a dancing pair that took the world by storm with new dance trends. While Rogers had starred in non-musicals prior to her partnership with Astaire, her role in BACHELOR MOTHER helped her transition to new characters. Starting in 1939, she began a 10 year stretch where she performed in comedies and dramas — none of which required ballroom dancing.
Tumblr media
Ann Sothern: Ann Sothern started as a film extra in the late-1920s and slowly worked her way to credited roles and leading ladies in B pictures. After plugging along in thankless roles, the course of Sothern’s career changed in 1939. She left RKO, signed a contract with MGM and landed the plum role of Maisie Ravier in MAISIE. In MAISIE, Sothern plays a brassy vaudeville performer who finds herself stranded in Wyoming. She meets a cowboy, played by Robert Young, who begrudgingly lets her stay at his ranch. Sothern finds herself in over her head when Young’s boss and wife arrive and she gets mixed up in the wife’s extracurricular affair. This film spawned 9 other Maisie films where Sothern played the fast talking, unrefined dame with a heart of gold.
Tumblr media
James Stewart: It’s hard to imagine a time when James Stewart wasn’t one of Hollywood’s top stars. But in 1939, he was still up-and-coming. Though he starred in other roles prior to 1939 (such as VIVACIOUS LADY and SHOPWORN ANGEL, both in 1938), Stewart’s role in MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON solidified him as a star. In the film, Stewart plays patriotic but inexperienced Jefferson Smith who is appointed a U.S. Senator. While the corrupt politicians hope Smith will be a “Yes” man, he fights for what he believes is right.
Tumblr media
Lana Turner: In 1939, Lana Turner starred in THESE GLAMOUR GIRLS, which was her first starring film role and her first film where the storyline focused primarily on her character. In the film, Turner plays a “taxi dancer” who is asked to a spring college dance by a rich, drunk college boy played by Lew Ayres. Turner takes him seriously and arrives at the college along with all of the dates—including Ayres’s other date. Turner’s character isn’t exactly welcomed with open arms by Ayres or the other snooty society college boys and girls. After this film, Turner received top billing and was swathed in glamour for the next 15 years until she left Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1956.
Tumblr media
John Wayne: John Wayne had been appearing in films since 1926. While he made a name for himself as a silver screen cowboy, those films were low-budget Westerns that didn’t run much longer than an hour. But in 1939, Wayne was cast in a role that made him the star he is known as today: Ringo Kid in STAGECOACH. Directed by John Ford, the film follows a group of people riding on a stagecoach dealing with their own issues. Wayne’s character of Ringo Kid is an outlaw who has escaped from prison to get revenge for the deaths of his father and brother.
Tumblr media
Lupe Velez: Lupe Velez found success in Hollywood in silent films and early talkies. But by the late-1930s, her career was waning. Velez returned home to Mexico to star in LA ZANDUNGA (1938) and was planning on signing a film contract in Mexico when she received an offer from RKO to star in THE GIRL FROM MEXICO. In the film, Velez plays Carmelita Fuentes, a Mexican singer who Donald Woods brings back to the United States to perform for an advertising client’s radio show. Woods and Velez’s characters fall in love and the two decide to marry. What was supposed to be a standalone B-movie spawned a successful film series, revitalizing Velez’s career. She played the “Mexican Spitfire” in eight comedies from 1939 to 1943. The film series also exhibited an early representation of interracial marriage.

Muppet Wiki, Connections, and Muppets Now
If Wander Over Yonder ever has any other noteworthy Muppet references (aside from Stok reminding one of Oscar the Grouch, of course), there’d be a page that has the references and connections.
If you remember from some of the interviews promoting the show, Craig McCracken often referred to Wander as a “hippie Muppet man” or something like that.
Connections
Aziz Ansari performed Westley
Will Arnett performed Ryder
Andy Bean provided the show’s music and performed Orbble Wright
Eddie Deezen performed the cartoon version of Commander Peepers
Jon Hamm performed the cartoon version of Lord Hater
John Hodgman performed a Lord of Illumination
Jack McBrayer performed Wander
Edie McClurg performed Trudi Traveler
Kevin Michael Richardson performed Papa Doom, Clipper, and a few additional voices
Laraine Newman performed Gram
Kristen Schaal performed Mavis (the cartoon-within-a-cartoon version of Mabel Pines from Gravity Falls)
Tara Strong performed Beeza and a few additional voices
“Weird Al” Yankovic performed Dr. Screwball Jones
In case any of my predictions of new characters and their voices come true in S3, not that the crew would ever take my suggestions...
Eric Bauza performed Master Frank Van Yisuko
Danny DeVito performed (insert name of Sylvia’s father)
Phil LaMarr performed Lil’ Dip
Jenny Slate performed Ranger Flitney Flute
Now imagine, if you will, an episode of the upcoming Disney+ exclusive, Muppets Now, with Jack McBrayer as a guest star. If we play our cards right, we might get to see Jack dressed like Wander and watch him perform “If You Wander Over Yonder.” Or at least have a Whatnot Muppet resembling Wander appear. This is too good to pass up!
If WOY had one more season, we’d get at least another Muppet mention for sure.

YEAR OF THE GHOST DOG
[TL;DR version for the New Yorker -- I loved many great short songs and became obsessed with (1) a very old, much longer one (2) and YouTube comments this year.]  [links to previous year’s lists at the bottom]
A while back, I found myself in an extended funk. The reasons are uninteresting and honestly a bit dumb, a mix of everyday bummers and more existential stuff, all of which manifested in a kind of 360º sluggishness. I couldn’t really figure my way out of it but I believed that I would eventually stop feeling this way.
One night, I saw that someone online was selling a copy of the Emulations “These Are the Things,” a magnificent soul ballad 7″ out of Oakland. I wasn’t exactly homesick for the Bay Area, but something about the song’s roots, as well as its overwhelming feeling of optimistic yearning, resonated with (through?) me. There’s a moment when the singer’s falsetto peaks, and the piano starts cascading, and things feel like they’re going to work out after all. The copy for sale wasn’t in great shape, and it cost $100, an extravagant amount of money to spend on a piece of music. But I convinced myself that I’d feel better at some point, weeks, months, or years later, and I’d listen to my Emulations single, and recall that weird summer/fall.
As often happened with independently produced records of the sixties and seventies, “These Are the Things” was pressed on styrene, rather than vinyl. Styrene is a kind of plastic that’s lighter, cheaper and much more fragile than vinyl, and you can tell the difference by a kind of hollow plink when you put it on a turntable. Styrene also means that it has a limited life, and that each time the needle drags across its grooves, the record degrades a little bit. Over time, styrene records that get played a lot no longer sound as crisp or clear (or so it seems). I listened to it once it arrived, feeling a bit of regret at this wild expenditure, but also imagining my future self’s gratitude. I imagined entering into communion with everyone who had played this copy before me. I decided to only listen to the song once a year, if that--after all, each time I listened to the record, the song was changing, slightly.
A few months later, I felt normal (whatever that means) again, and the record became a marker of...I’m not sure what--maybe a kind of blind, stubborn optimism. Someone years later uploaded the song onto YouTube, which means I can listen to it whenever I want. This fall, I was trying and failing to spend less time on the Internet. But I decided that, instead of going on Twitter and Facebook, I would just read comments fans left on YouTube. I became obsessed with reading all the intimate histories people shared with one another--the chance encounters, the teenage dates and breakups, the seventies shop owners who recalled the days when stocking the right hit single could cover an entire month’s rent. I was listening to the Emulations when I noticed this comment, from Deric Jackson, who was apparently one of the group’s members: “I sung this song when I was 19yrs old. It was a pleasure to record and send this messageout into the airways. I have been with the women that God had given me to marry when I was 22yrs old. I did not understand at that time I was singing about my own life and the women who I had not met, but how wonderful it is to be with my wife fo 35yrs and life is still a breath of fresh air and wonderful. I would like to say to all real men love your wife, never worship her only one to worship is God alone.“ I’m pretty agnostic about most things relating to providence. But I felt as though I had been living in these words: “I did not understand at that time...” Jackson’s song was a prophecy, maybe even a conjuring, of his own path, and I wonder what he hears when he listens to it now. Sometimes you don’t know what’s coming next. But there’s always another song, and it doesn’t always sound the same as the last time.

Incredibles 2 Review
I absolutely loved Incredibles 2! It's a great time at the movies and definitely worth the 14-year wait. I was initially skeptical of it picking up seconds after the original, but I think the story threads here—particularly Jack-Jack's (Eli Fucile, Nick Bird) development and the Anti-Super laws—needed to be dealt with onscreen rather than off.  I liked that they reversed the structure of the first movie and had Helen (Holly Hunter) go off on the adventures while Bob (Craig T. Nelson) stayed at home to watch the kids. Even better, this switch was rooted in statistical facts that Elastigirl was the most effective and efficient hero between herself, Bob, and Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson). Since so much of her Elastigirl persona was left in the past in the original movie because she’d moved on in life while Bob hadn’t really, showing Helen truly loving her work and being great at it was a perfect moment that let us see a whole new side to her. Seeing Helen so overjoyed at getting to be a hero again—and being great at it, with no collateral casualties—was excellent! It was also nice to see that she had detective skills; a good contrast to Bob smashing his way through problems (and which have probably have helped her deduce what her kids are up to over the years!). That her heroic competence was truly valued outside her family circle and by the people who wanted to use her to push their politics Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener) was a genuine and welcome surprise; I'd love to see more female heroes respected and revered the way Elastigirl is here. Bob playing Mr. Mom was a lot of fun, even if I’m more than ready for a competent parenting duo instead of the always-effective mom and the cliché overwhelmed dad. That said, Bob’s battle with Dash's (Huck Milner) new math, Violet's (Sarah Vowell) teenage angst, and Jack-Jack's terrible toddling was extremely relatable and a great change from the superhero midlife crisis we saw in the original. I enjoyed Bob’s playful ego about being the better hero in his marriage and loved that it was balanced by genuinely caring that Helen had the space to do what she needed to do. That sort of loving/selfish balance is an extremely difficult line to walk but the writing and acting totally pull it off without making him unlikable (and it's not even hinted or implied that Helen is in any way selfish either). It was especially sweet of Bob not to tell Helen what was going on with the family not because he didn't want to come off as incompetent, but because he knew she'd stop her mission. Yes, he benefits from her completing it, but I fully believe that he also wants the better future for his kids that Helen can secure. I would've liked to see more of Dash and Violet in general, and particularly their school lives. Dash has homework trouble and Tony (Michael Bird), the boy Violet made a date with, forgets her (a cool example of superhero lives wreaking havoc on civilian ones as well as the law affecting the Parrs in an unexpected way), but the Anti-Super laws would've been stronger if we'd seen the kids’ lack of choice Bob talks about. Violet wanting to be normal and Dash being "defined as a person" by heroism does play out that choice, but we don't really get to see consequences of the laws in terms of impacts on the kids. Does having to come in second place in track rankle Dash? And if he's defined by being a hero, how does he feel about having to hide at school?  Is anyone suspicious of his speed? Does Dash have to fight to control himself when confronted by bullies that openly hate Supers? By teachers who preach that Supers are bad and should be illegal? Playing up the questionable aspects of the first movie's ending—is he cheating by using his speed, even for second place? How is not living up to his potential affecting his development?—would've built up a lot more pressure on the need to make Supers legal again. Violet hating being a Super made her a good proponent for not being legalized, though I would’ve liked more of that as well. How much of her tragic love life is really angst about not being able to be herself? Maybe she could’ve gotten involved with a student organization to keep Supers illegal, pitting her against her mom’s efforts. What if she discovered another Super kid at school and was forced to choose between outing them or letting them stay hidden? Might she find that pretending to be normal at school is simply boring or stifling her in ways she doesn’t want to admit? That said, I loved what we did get from Dash and Violet and absolutely dug Jack-Jack's awakening powers! The idea that Super babies often have multiple abilities is a very cool metaphor for kids having unlimited potential and it also made for a lot of fun, varied action scenes. His battle with a raccoon was highly entertaining and his unexpected bond with Edna Mode (Brad Bird) was a brilliant twist! Edna discovering a role as a loving aunt was as hilarious as it was heartwarming and a great way to reveal a new dimension of her character. Frozone is always a welcome addition and it was great to see more of him here, both as a "rebel" with Bob and Helen trying to get the Anti-Super law reversed, as a protective uncle to the Parr kids, and finally a hypnotized enemy. I’d like to finally meet his wife Honey (Kimberly Adair Clark) though. It's beyond time she was more than just a nagging influence taking the joy out of his superheroics (though I like that she knows her worth!). I really hope she’s also a retired Super so we can see what the two of them are like outside of their home. Or, it would’ve been easy to make her a Lois Lane-type figure, so she could cover Helen’s return to prominence and at least get a moment of bonding with her. Either of those options would be great and I’d like to see their relationship explored somewhere. I knew who Screenslaver (Bill Wise) was almost immediately, but that didn’t lessen my love for this character at all. The hypnotism was a spooky and old-fashioned angle that felt totally fresh and fit the retro-futurist world of The Incredibles perfectly! Screenslaver also managed to comment on modern concerns about social media obsession, which was a nice bit of relatability (just like Bob and Dash's struggle with new math) while remaining rooted in the films’ era, when TVs were the hip new thing everyone was obsessed with. Screenslaver was a creepy, cool villain who topped Syndrome for me. I just wish his argument—that people were getting lazy and becoming too dependent on Supers—was more explored with examples of people being "less" because of superheroes (beyond hearing about a death caused by waiting on one). Maybe Screenslaver should’ve been saved for a movie set after the law against Supers was lifted, but slightly clearer examples of his point here would’ve worked just as well. I feel like his argument would be stronger if we got to see Supers making things too easy or if more people were put in peril because they waited for Supers to fix their problems instead of the big argument against heroes being the collateral damage their fights cause. That said, I absolutely loved this villain and would definitely be down for a Screenslaver return! Underminer (John Ratzenberger) was also a cool, second-tier villain that felt like a classic comic book bad guy. He's clearly patterned off of Mole Man, but that didn't matter to me; it was kinda refreshing (and appropriately old-school, given these movies’ time period) to see a villain who just wanted to rob banks. He also provided a good way to reintroduce the family's heroic dynamic and to showcase Bob and Helen's different fighting styles while complicating their lives further, building off the end of the first movie brilliantly. I liked that it became a strike against the heroes that he was forgotten in the scramble to stop his drills and that he actually got away. The new Supers that were introduced didn't make the biggest impression, but I preferred this to more focus on a bunch of random new people who would take screentime from the Parrs. I did like Voyd (Sophia Bush) a lot; her fangirl attitude toward Elastigirl was fun and she was a nice answer to Syndrome's toxic fandom. I hope she returns in a sequel! Krushauer (Phil LaMarr) was a solid threat and got some good and funny lines in, while Screech playing up his full animalistic nature was creepy and something I hope Daredevil does with Owl Jr. These wannabe Supers did bring a variety of challenges to the final battle, so as secondary adversaries go, they worked perfectly. All the fight scenes contained very clever uses of everyone’s powers and were choreographed with an insane amount of fun and imagination! The numerous powers on display also made for battles that were never uninteresting. Even Bob's Incredibile got a nice showcase here as a display of the retro tech in this universe. I love the design of this world in general, but classic spy and superhero aesthetics like that are my favorite parts; I wish more superhero franchises would embrace stylized elements like this to carve out their own identities. Speaking of classic aesthetics, I loved that Bob, Helen, and Lucius had their own old-timey superhero theme songs! Michael Giacchino’s music was great as always, but those themes were great surprises! Brad Bird's direction was crisp and the writing emotionally resonate, bringing the heart of the first movie back at full force.  I can't wait to see what comes next from this world! I hope we don't have to wait another 14 years for Incredibles 3 (and I didn't need the apology/”trust us the wait was worth it” video that played at the beginning of this one; it only made us wait longer!), but I definitely want to see more adventures in this universe. Now that Supers are allowed again, I’d love for the next movie to introduce Dash and Violet's trouble-making cousins as wannabe supervillain bad influences. Cousins would bring aunts and uncles who have differing parenting styles from Bob and Helen, as well as Bob and Helen’s in-laws, who have their own opinions on how to “correctly” be heroes as well as parents. I'm thinking Christmas Vacation with superheroes, but whatever the next film is, I'll be in line to see it! While we wait, you should see Incredibles 2! It's among Pixar's best and definitely worth seeing on the big screen!

I think me and you should blow this off / So much for the after-party / Let's tell everybody we got lost
Your hips swung to the beat of the upbeat song that played through Ed’s quarters. Bodies were crowded into the small living area of his quarters like sardines, all chatting and laughing and drinking. You yourself had a drink in your hand and had a smile plastered on your face as you listened to Gordon finish telling some ridiculous story from his youth to you and a few others.
You felt a hand brush against the small of your back and you turned your head to smile at your boyfriend. “Hey,” you said.
“Hey,” John murmured, peppering a kiss to your temple.
“Want me to get you another drink?” you asked, noticing his empty hands.
John shook his head slowly. “Nah, I’m good.” He lowered his voice so only you could hear him. “I was actually wondering if you wanted to get our of here.”
You raised your eyebrows and smiled softly. “Not in a partying mood?”
His hand snaked around your waist. “I just want to be alone with you right now.”
Your stomach flip-flopped. “What do we tell people?”
“Nothing,” he murmured. He pressed his hip against your bum. His breath fanned against your ear as he spoke; shivers being sent down your spine with every word he said. “Let’s just slip out of here. If people ask in the morning we can say we got lost.”
You laughed lightly. “On our own ship?”
“Could happen. You have been drinking.”
You smirked.
Luckily, no one was paying the two of you much mind. Gordon had moved off to tell his story to other people and everyone else was too engrossed in the party to notice you and John getting a little handsy in the corner.
I think me and you should do our own thing / Our own way, at my place, far away
You moved yourself to the music still, feeling your bum pressing against John as you did. His breath hitched in his throat and you smiled to yourself. “And what would we do if we left?” you asked. You brought your glass to your lips and took a sip.
“Our own thing,” John said. His hands held onto your hips, fingers greedily sneaking up under the hem of your shirt.
“Yeah?” You bit down on your lip to stop the smile from spreading. You didn’t want to be seen smiling like an idiot while you danced with your boyfriend at the captain’s party. It was bad enough that your cheeks felt like they were on fire, what with John literally breathing down your neck and being pressed right up against you. No one was really looking your way, but still.
“And where would we go?” you asked quietly.
“My place. Far away from here,” he replied.
You turned to face him and stole a quick kiss.
John smiled against your lips, hands pulling you closer to him.
You pushed on his chest. “We’re still in public,” you reminded him. “Wait ‘till we get home.”
John smiled wider when you called his place ‘home’. He nodded. “Let’s go.”
You finished your drink and set the empty glass onto a table on your way out. Both of you checked over your shoulders a few times as you exited, but no one noticed.
You giggled as John took your hand and pulled you down the corridors of the ship.
You were at his place in no time. When the door was shut behind you, John kissed you deeply and quickly.
Take it from me if you want a t-shirt to sleep in / It's my favourite but you can keep it
“If you want to stay over, you can sleep in one of my t-shirts,” he murmured, hands moving to your waist. His chilly fingers slipped under your shirt and traced shapes against your bare skin beneath.
You shivered slightly and smiled. “Okay. Can I change into it now?”
John grinned and nodded. He brought you to the bedroom and handed you one of his favourite shirts. “Here.”
“Are you sure?” you asked, taking the worn cotton shirt from him. “Isn’t this your favourite?”
He just shrugged and smiled. “My favourite girl should be allowed to borrow my favourite shirt. You can even keep it if you’d like.”
You smiled widely and pulled your shirt off over your head.
John whistled and sat on the bed, admiring your body as you changed into nothing but his shirt and your panties.
Looks good baby you should leave it / Hanging off your shoulders
“Damn, Y/N,” John said, eyes wide with lust as he took you in. “You should wear my shirts more often.”
You laughed, a faint blush heating your cheeks. “Yeah?” You did a little twirl and the stretched-out collar slipped halfway down your shoulder.
“Yeah,” he said definitively.”
Now give them bare feet dancing down the hallway / Smiling at me running your finger down the wall
“Like what you see, Lieutenant Commander?” you asked in a sultry tone, moving across his room to run your fingers across the wall next to you.
“Looking at you? Always,” he replied.
You smiled and held out your hand to him.
John stood and took your hand. “Dance with me?” he asked.
“We don’t have any music,” you replied, but smiled nonetheless.
“Do we need any?” he asked softly.
You laughed as he pulled you close to him. “No, I guess not,” you said, looking into his dark brown eyes that shone in the dim lighting of his quarters.
John’s hands went to your waist and you wrapped yours loosely around his neck. The two of you swayed slowly in what could only be described as an attempted waltz.
You stole kisses from one another every other moment, lips being placed on nearly every exposed part of skin.
You know what I want, I got what you need / Take it from me
“Hey John,” you murmured while his head was ducked into the crook of your neck, lips peppering teasing kisses at its base.
“Mm,” he hummed.
You gently dragged your nails against the back of his neck and to his shoulders. “Are we going to dance all night?”
“For as long as we like,” he replied. He lifted his head and kissed the corner of your lips.
You caught him in a longer kiss, leaning as close to him as possible.
Baby, you should stop right now, right here / Right where we wanna be I'll spin you around and let's just see / Where this thing goes, all I know is that I'm all yours, all night / I've got nothing but time
“Mm, alright,” he murmured against your lips. “I think I’m ready for a different kind of dance.”
You laughed and moved back slightly. “Yeah?”
He held your hand firmly and spun you around.
A surprised, but delighted, yelp left your lips. You laughed loudly as John caught you, dipping you in his arms.
He kissed you, softly and slowly. Nearly teasingly slow.
You cupped his face in your hands as you kissed him, your body being securely held by him.
He then stood upright and pulled you with him.
“I didn’t know you knew how to do that,” you said, taking in a breath.
“I’m full of surprises,” John replied.
You grinned. “That you are.” You ran a finger down his chest. “So, is that the only ‘different kind of dance’ you had in mind?”
John took a step back towards his bed. “Oh there are several kinds of dances I’d like to try with you,” he murmured. He kissed you softly. “But I’m in no rush.”
As his legs hit the bed, he sank onto the mattress. You went down with him, settling yourself onto his lap.
“Me, neither,” you replied. You kissed his jaw.
“We’ve got nothin’ but time tonight,” he said. “Nothin’ but time and each other.”
