Is the rise in Vitamin D deficiency due to us using too much sun screen? Well, seemingly there is no concrete evidence either way. The facts are that 1. direct UVB rays stimulate the production of vitamin D in our skin 2. that direct sunlight can cause skin cancer 3. that using a sunscreen, in particular a high factor broad spectrum sun screen, protects the skin from UVB rays. The body makes around 90% of the Vitamin D it needs, the other 10% of your Vitamin D intake comes from food. If you don’t get a lot of sunlight, or if you usually stay covered up, you should use a quality Vitamin D supplement. What is the importance of vitamin D? 1. Bone development 2. Helps prevent depression 3. Protects against cancer 4. Reduces blood pressure 5. Prevents heart disease, stroke and artery disease 6. Reduces risk of diabetes 7. Boosts the immune system 8. It plays a major roles in the life cycle of human cells. Experts say that just 10 minutes of sunlight on your skin is enough to avoid Vitamin D deficiency. So get outside when you can. I guess it stands to reason that if vitamin D is stimulated by UV rays then blocking them with sunscreen will reduce vitamin D production. However, we must remember that even SPF 50 sunscreen only stops 98% of the rays, 2% are still getting through. You only need to be out in the sun 10 minutes a day without sunscreen to produce the recommended amount of vitamin D. So, if you are out for any length of time with factor 50 sunscreen it is probably enough, but not proven. The fact that UVB rays cause cancer makes me inclined to block the rays and hope enough are still getting through and concentrate on supplementing vitamin D in our diets. It is particularly important to supplement vitamin D in young children as it aids their growing bones. Mineral sun screens and the environment At Tropic, our mission is to create naturally derived products that leave no lasting negative impacts on our environment. Unlike chemical sunscreens which bleach coral reefs and disrupt marine biospheres our sunscreens are all reef friendly. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are inert minerals and break down in a way that is not harmful to the environment, becoming an innocuous part of the ocean floor as sediment. Our ingredients are in line with the US National Park Service and the Professional Association of Underwater Instructors recommendations for coral reef safety. Their guidelines state that sunscreens with titanium oxide or zinc oxide, which are natural mineral ingredients, have not been found harmful to corals. Our mission is to provide customers with all the information they need to make an informed decision on which level of sunscreen to purchase for their skin and environment. The UVA star rating system is carried out by the retailer Boots who use their own method of measuring UVA levels. This is not an absolute measure of UVA protection, nor does this type of rating have any EU legislation. The rating is determined by the ratio between the UVA and UVB levels of protection in a sunscreen, this means that a five-star rating for an SPF 15 sunscreen offers less UVA protection than a five-star SPF 50 sunscreen, despite having the same star rating. We wanted a more direct and straightforward UVA protection indication for our products. That’s why all our sunscreens feature the distinctive UVA circle logo, which is backed by EU legislation. With Tropic, you have total peace of mind that our mineral sunscreen is a broad-spectrum sunscreen, protecting you from both UVA and UVB rays. You can read more about the star rating and the UVA logo below: https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg15020361-200-sun-worshippers-baffled-by-star-ratings/ http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-09-1057_en.htm?locale=en #veganbeauty #jointhegreenrevolution #uva #mineralsunscreen #freefromnasties (at Bedford, Bedfordshire, United Kingdom)

Hands up if you saw Tropic’s Scalp Massager feature on Vogue?! Their article ‘is scalp care the new skincare?’ has certainly raised some eyebrows. ‘Scalp care’ isn’t just for those with ‘scalp concerns’, it’s something we can all be turning our attention to, to promote healthy hair and skin. Have a read of the article and share your thoughts with me #jointhegreenrevolution #ineedthisproduct #tropicskincare #headmassager (at Bedford, Bedfordshire, United Kingdom)

What are UVA and UVB rays?
I don’t know about you, but I was taken totally unawares by the beautiful burst of sunshine we had last week. So much so that I my little girl got very burnt, her skin was red raw, it was not good at all. This prompted me to do some research into sunscreens and actually it is very complicated.
Over the next few days I would like to share with you my findings and hopefully we can make a well informed decision as to what we should be putting on our skin this summer.
Today, we’ll be looking at UVA and UVB rays.
A good way to remember the difference between two types of the UV rays is that UVA causes ageing, while UVB causes burning.
Both types of UV radiation can cause serious damage to the skin, but work in different ways. UVB penetrates the epidermis (upper layers of the skin), causing the skin to burn. UVA penetrates straight into the dermis (the layer below the epidermis), causing visible signs of ageing such as wrinkles, age spots and loss of elasticity in the skin.
All Tropic sunscreens feature broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, so you know you can enjoy the sun while being protected from both types of UV rays.
