REF5: Lords of Darkness (1988) continues the format of the Books of Lairs, though under the Forgotten Realms setting banner (this is one of the first wave FR books, in fact!). Instead of any monsters, though, Lords focuses exclusively on the undead. Like, all of them — skeletons, ghouls and ghasts, shadows, wights, a mummies, spectres, vampires, ghosts and a lich. Because the list of critters is shorter, the encounters are all longer, really more like short adventures, really. Most of the undead are fully realized NPCs rather than generic foes, which broadens their tactics, their potential weaknesses and still feels like a noteworthy detail even five years after Ravenloft laid out the appeal of richly rendered foes. There’s also a section on methods of dealing with the undead, which is quite fun and detailed, and new spells for necromancers, because of course there are.

The adventures themselves are…fine? I feel like they are more interesting as artifacts of the early days of the Realms, as the published record was rapidly establishing a world that echoes Greenwood’s private realm. Most are just passing references. Some fade into history, others (like the references to Ravens Bluff) feel emblematic of the time. Some would have long legacies, like the Nether Scrolls, which are introduced here. Jennell Jaquays’ is probably the most interesting, as it riffs a bit on I2: Tomb of the Lizard King, with a lizard man mummy instead of a lizard man vampire. The vampires, the brothers Jonathan and Jeremiah Morningmist, have excellent, Ravenloft-y names, too.

Karl Waller is the interior artist, though he doesn’t get nearly enough space (he’d go on to gorgeously define Al-Qadim). Cover by Jeff Easley. That man is aces at painting skeletons, I tell ya. Its delightfully autumnal, too.

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cells are the foundation for every organ and tissue in your body. They are the body's raw materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. There are many different types of stem cells that come from different places in the body or are formed at different times in our lives. These include embryonic stem cells that exist only at the earliest stages of development and various types of tissue-specific (or adult) stem cells that appear during fetal development and remain in our bodies throughout life.

Cell therapy involves grafting cells to restore the function of a tissue or organ. The aim is to provide long-term care to the patient through a single injection of therapeutic cells. These cells are obtained from pluripotent  (can give all types of cells) or multipotent (can give a limited number of cell types) from the patient himself or from a donor. Under the right conditions in the body or a laboratory, stem cells divide to form more cells called daughter cells. Researchers now know how to differentiate pluripotent cells into several cell types.

People who might benefit from stem cell therapies include those with spinal cord injuries, type 1 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, stroke, burns, cancer and osteoarthritis.

The most used Multipotent stem cells, present throughout the body within the adipose, bone marrow, organ support tissues, but also from bones, cartilage, muscles ... These stem cells are particularly easy to take from adipose tissue or bone marrow. They can give rise to cartilaginous cells (chondrocytes), Osseous (ostheoblasts), fatty (adipocytes), muscle fibers (myocytes), cardiomyocytes ... They also secrete growth factors favorable to the surrounding cells and are sometimes used exclusively for this property. They also produce anti-inflammatory factors, which lead to local immunosuppression and promote the function of cells regulating immunity. These properties limit local inflammation and protect, a priori, against transplant rejection.

Other multipotent cells can be used in cell therapy, such as skin stem cells. The stem cells of the eye make it possible to repair lesions of the cornea. Hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow are the source of all blood cells: in the case of hematological cancer, they make it possible to rebuild a stock of healthy blood cells after chemotherapy. Umbilical cord blood contains immune-naive hematopoietic stem cells, and therefore very well tolerated in the event of a transplant. Cord blood is used to treat malignant hemopathies such as leukemia or lymphoma, or genetic diseases like Fanconi anemia. It offers a serious alternative to bone marrow transplantation in the absence of a compatible donor. However, the number of therapeutic cells recovered by cord is low. When therapeutic stem cells are taken from someone other than the patient, they are said to be allogeneic. Their use can pose problems of immune tolerance.

Stem cell therapy, also known as regenerative medicine, promotes the repair response of diseased, dysfunctional or injured tissue using stem cells or their derivatives. It is the next chapter in organ transplantation and uses cells instead of donor organs, which are limited in supply.

The indications for cell therapy are endless and the promise is real in many areas. Clinical fields such as that of neurodegenerative diseases  (Parkinson's or Alzheimer's diseases) or muscular degenerations (Duchenne muscular dystrophy) could be concerned if the researchers manage to produce different subtypes of neurons in large quantities and skeletal muscle cells. And how not to also imagine the possibility of producing blood cells, including platelet, in unlimited quantity, to cover the blood needs of hospitals? All assumptions are now allowed.

Stem cell researchers are making great advances in understanding normal development, figuring out what goes wrong in disease and developing and testing potential treatments to help patients. They still have much to learn, however, about how stem cells work in the body and their capacity for healing. Safe and effective treatments for most diseases, conditions and injuries are in the future.

There is certain information you should look into if you are considering a stem cell treatment, including a detailed description of the treatment and the science that supports it, the expected outcome and the risks. It is important to discuss any research or information you gather with your primary care physician and other trusted members of your healthcare team in deciding what is right for you.

*~ Serial Killer Dallen Bounds ~*

On August 9, 1971, future serial killer Dallen Forrest Bounds, who was later linked to four murders in South Carolina and suspected of more in Washington state, was born in Ashland, Oregon.

Bounds’ killing spree began on June 26, 1999, when he tied employee Jonathan Lemuel Lara with flex ties to a chair in the back room of a Radio Shack in Greenville. Lara was stabbed in the neck with a screwdriver and subsequently died.

On December 22, Bounds struck again, this time at a tiny flower shop on a busy street in Greenville. He killed Karen Moore Hayden, 30, and left her in a pool of blood in a back storage room. Her throat had been slit.

A delivery man who had been sent to check on Hayden found all of the store’s lights turned off and the “Sorry, we’re closed” sign hanging in the front window — he then unlocked the door and discovered her body.

Police saw similarities to the Lara murder: As with the Radio Shack crime scene, the flower shop appeared to have very little disturbed.

The next day, Pickens County Sheriff’s deputies found Sandra Ott, who authorities later revealed was Bounds’ girlfriend, shot to death on the floor of her ex-husband Timothy Ott’s house. According to authorities, Bounds had been stalking her.

Timothy Ott had fled the home and ran to a neighbor’s house to call police, but Bounds caught up to him and shot him in the head. The neighbor was later found hiding in a closet, and the Ott’s five-year-old son was found by police asleep in his bed.

Bounds was found almost 12 hours later at a home in Easley where he had taken two women hostage. When police came in, Bounds put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger, committing suicide.

Two weeks later, Greenville police announced the arrest of Casandra Laster, 29, who lived with Bounds, in connection with Lara’s murder. Laster was found guilty of accessory after the fact of felony murder in 2001. She appealed her sentence of 15 years, but the case was dismissed in 2003 by the South Carolina Court of Appeals. She has since been released.

Fake Facebook Dating Profiles

A legitimate dating profile usually has plenty of photos of the person in different situations, with one or two that show the person's whole body, not just part of their face. The individual might also include links to their Instagram or Facebook accounts. In contrast, a dating profile might be fake. Though Facebook is not a dating website, it’s a common place to find love. In a romance scam, someone on the Internet uses fake, stolen pictures to impersonate a profile. They target singles and strike up an online relationship with them for the purpose of manipulating their emotions and getting money through any means necessary. Here’s How to Spot a Fake Profile Don’t get us wrong, the internet can be a beautiful place – but sometimes, some people aren’t always who they say they are. It could be someone you’ve met in an MMORPG, through Instagram comments or a ‘friend of a friend’ on Twitter, you just never know. Know why it is important to spot a fake account. First and foremost, somebody with a fake account.

Chances are you've landed on a fake dating profile or two over the course of your online dating career. They look a lot like real profiles with real, bonafide people behind the screen. But because they're created by catfishers and scammers, they often have a few qualities that scream 'fake,' once you know what to look for.

About 10% of dating profiles fall into this category, so it's good to know the red flags, especially if you spend a lot of time swiping and scrolling through all your matches. 'A fake profile is anywhere the person is misrepresenting their true identity,' Jonathan Bennett, a relationship and dating expert at Double Trust Dating, tells Bustle. Fake profiles are created for a variety of reasons, he says, including catfishing for attention, marketing products, or even scamming people out of money.

Scams On Dating Sites

The whole reason they work is because they look legit. But according to DatingScout, you can often tell what's real from what isn't by looking at the photos. If the profile only has one or two pictures, consider it a red flag. And the same is true if the photo is one with a white background, as that could indicate it's a stock image yanked from the internet, and not actually them.

Should you spot one of these telltale signs, take a beat and examine the rest of the profile. 'If a person seems too perfect, it's a red flag you could be dealing with a fake,' Bennett says. This might mean they have extremely professional looking photos, he says, versus ones where they're just casually hanging out with friends or family. Or that they're bragging a bit about things like wealth and status, which could be a ploy to lure unsuspecting daters in.

Facebook Dating App Scams

Of course, it's not just people making these profiles, but computer programs. 'If the wording and grammar on the profile seem off .. it is a sign you could be dealing with a fake or a bot,' Bennett says. These profiles are created with the goal of scamming you into sharing private information, as mentioned above, or tricking you into clicking on malware links.

If someone's profile answers seem all weird, disjointed, and robotic, don't bother engaging. And the same goes for profiles that seem like they're trying to sell you something, which is more common than you might think. 'If the profile is focused on sending you elsewhere to contact the person in the profile, like a website, it's likely a fake trying to scam you or market to you,' Bennett says.

RIP Terry Donahue

Sadly, we lost Terry Donahue a few days ago:

Terry Donahue, the winningest coach in Pac-12 Conference and UCLA football history who later served as general manager of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers, died Sunday. He was 77.

The school said he died at his home in Newport Beach, California, after a two-year struggle with cancer.

Donahue has the most wins (98) of any coach in Pac-12 history and also the most wins (151) in UCLA history. He coached the Bruins from 1971 to 1975, working as an assistant under Pepper Rodgers and then Dick Vermeil, before taking over as head coach at age 31 and serving from 1976-95.[...]

He had a 151-74-8 coaching record at UCLA and a 98-51-5 mark in Pac-12 play. The Bruins won or shared five league titles during Donahue's tenure. He coached such future Hall of Famers as quarterback Troy Aikman, safety Kenny Easley and outside linebacker Jonathan Ogden.

Donahue was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000. He joined the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1997, and the press box at the Rose Bowl was named for him in 2013.[...]

Kentucky AG Daniel Cameron Releases Hours Of Grand Jury Proceedings In The Case Of Breonna Taylor’s Murder - Here's What We Know So Far

The day has finally come. Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron has released those secret audio recordings of the grand jury proceedings in the case of Breonna Taylor’s murder. More inside…

What was done in the dark has now come to light.

After filing a court motion for an extension, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron has finally released the audio recordings of the grand jury proceedings in the case of the murder of Breonna Taylor. The Republican attorney general - the protégé of Sen. Mitch McConnell - was trying to keep the recordings on the low, but now they're out! 

Here's what we know so far...

The release of the audio recordings comes after an unidentified juror filed a motion asking a judge to release the transcript and records related to the March 13th death of 26-year-old Breonna Taylor. As you know, the black EMT worker was gunned down inside of her apartment after police officers (dressed in plain clothes) raided her home with a no-knock warrant.

The recordings are about 15 hours and they include interviews with witnesses, audio of 911 calls, and it also features the grand jury's sessions from Sept. 21st through Sept. 23rd. The recordings give a glimpse into the process, but they do not include prosecutors’ instructions.

The NY Times reports:

The audio files do not include statements or recommendations from prosecutors about which charges they think should be brought against the officers. Mr. Cameron has said that jurors were told that the two officers who shot Ms. Taylor were justified in their actions. Ultimately, the jurors indicted a former officer last week on three charges of endangering Ms. Taylor’s neighbors by firing into their home during a raid of her apartment in March, but did not charge either of the officers who shot her.

“As is customary in the recording of Grand Jury proceedings, juror deliberations and prosecutor recommendations and statements were not recorded, as they are not evidence,” Mr. Cameron said in a statement. He has insisted that the 12 jurors were given “all of the evidence” and were free to pursue additional charges.

LMPD detective Myles Cosgrove, the officer the FBI believes fired the shot that took Breonna’s life, described the scene as something out of a movie. And he seemed unsure of what exactly happened that night. Of course.

“I know that I have fired,” he said during an interview he gave police investigators last month that was played for the grand jury. “I just sensed that I’ve fired.”

But, he added, “It’s like a surreal thing. If you told me I didn’t do something at that time, I’d believe you. If you told me I did do something, I’d probably believe you, too.”

As soon as he got to the doorway, Detective Cosgrove said, he was “overwhelmed with bright flashes and darkness. And what I describe as a movie reel that’s doing that ticking where you see white and black, white and black.”

Detective Cosgrove said that Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly, who was shot in the leg during the raid, fell to the ground and that he had to step over his wounded colleague.

“I know John, my friend that I’ve known for 15 years, has been shot in this confined space,” Detective Cosgrove said. “And I know this person is down and I sense that there’s still these gunshots happening due to those bright lights. I can’t even explain what it is.”

Detective Cosgrove said he also saw a shadow of a person, a “larger than normal human shadow,” when they raided the apartment and he saw flashing lights.

Jurors questioned some of the evidence that was presented to them.

At times, the jurors’ questions suggested they were skeptical of what they were being shown: one asked about the time stamps on the video. Another asked why they had not seen the room where the gun was found; the investigator said that would be shown in a different video.

The biggest controversy surrounding the case is whether or not the officers actually announced themselves when they arrived at Breonna's front door.

Mattingly said the warrant was signed as a no-knock, but they preferred not to go that route. In his interview, he said they knocked and announced six to seven times for more than a few seconds each time

According to the recordings, a police lieutenant testified one neighbor claims they did NOT hear the police identify themselves and that's in line with what Breonna's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, said. However, another cop testified one neighbor said they did hear the cops announce themselves before breaking into her apartment. And that's the story the police has been going with.

There were 12 neighbors in total who said they did NOT hear the police identify themselves before breaking. Also, we'd like to point out the neighbor who the police lieutenant said didn't hear the cops announce themselves did NOT testify and its unclear why.

  Detective Cosgrove, one of the two officers who shot Ms. Taylor, said that a neighbor came outside and got into an argument with Brett Hankison, a former officer who fired his weapon during the raid and whom the grand jury indicted for endangering Ms. Taylor’s neighbors.

The unidentified neighbor yelled at them, “something about leave her alone, there was some girl there,” Detective Cosgrove said in an interview with police investigators last month that was played for the grand jury.

He said officers were outside knocking for 90 seconds, and that the volume escalated from “gentle knocking” to “forceful pounding” to pounding while yelling “police.”

Detective Nobles, who held the battering ram that broke through Ms. Taylor’s door, said he stood at the door, knocking and announcing himself as police for one or two minutes before he used the battering ram to force his way into Ms. Taylor’s apartment. His interview was also played for grand jurors. He said it took three knocks with the battering ram to break down the door completely.

When he entered, Mr. Nobles said it was “pitch black,” and that Sgt. John Mattingly, one of the officers who shot Ms. Taylor, was quickly shot in the leg after the team entered the building.

In previous interviews with The Times, 11 of 12 of Ms. Taylor’s neighbors said they never heard the police identify themselves. One neighbor said he heard the group say “Police,” just once.

The officer who was indicted on wanton endangerment charges - Brett Hankison – apparently thought someone in the apartment had a semiautomatic weapon, although there was no evidence of that.

The calls suggest that Mr. Hankison, who was fired after the shooting for violating department procedure, believed that Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly had been wounded by someone with an “A.R.” who was “barricaded” inside the apartment.

Mr. Hankison’s reference to an “A.R.” on the call appears to be a reference to either an assault rile or the AR-15, a type of a military-style semiautomatic rifle.

In fact, investigators later said, Sergeant Mattingly was struck by a 9-millimeter round fired by Kenneth Walker, Ms. Taylor’s boyfriend, who has said he mistook the officers for intruders.

No one has been charged for the murder of Breonna Taylor.

This is what we know so far. There's 15 whole hours of recordings, so details about the case will be trickling in. We'll finally know what Daniel Cameron presented and the public can make a sound decision once everything is laid out. Stay tuned...
