You know what slightly miffs me with Doctor Who? When they – characters, writers, everybody – keep calling War Doctor "The Doctor". Buddy, that ain't his name. That's just what we the viewers call him for the sake of categorization. Don't misincarnate my boy!

The War Doctor Rises
27 March 2024
Jonathon Carley stars in a new era of full-cast audio dramas for the War Doctor, announced today from Big Finish Productions.
Tumblr media
The Doctor’s disavowed Time War incarnation first appeared, played by Sir John Hurt, in the 2013 Doctor Who TV episodes The Name of the Doctor, The Night of the Doctor and The Day of the Doctor. Hurt later reprised this role for twelve audio stories at Big Finish, before his tragic passing in 2017.
In June 2021, Jonathon Carley took over the mantle, playing a younger version of the character in The War Doctor Begins, an origin story for the incarnation which ran for six volumes.
Now, beginning in August 2024, Carley will reprise the role in Doctor Who – The War Doctor Rises. The War Doctor’s story will continue as he faces the ever-increasing horrors of the Time War.
Producer David Richardson said: “The younger War Doctor has now established himself, and so we’re heading into different territory for his era. For The War Doctor Rises, I wanted us to hand over to the writer – each box set will be one writer’s vision, as they give their own take on the War Doctor and the Time War.
“So, each volume will feel like a vast sweeping movie for audio, with richly developed characters and deeply imaginative worlds. There are no boundaries on creativity, no pressure to tie up a story within an hour. We’ve recorded two of them so far and I promise you, it’s working beautifully.”
Jonathon Carley added: “It’s the next chapter! The War Doctor Begins was about the character finding himself and coming to terms with the choice he’s made, which has been a fascinating story to explore – the identity crisis the character has had. Now he’s going to have a harder edge, because he’s learned to let go of that past identity, and now he’s on a mission to deliver what he set out to do.
“The longer stories add a whole different dimension in terms of the scale of the storytelling, because we can really dig deep, not just in terms of the plot and what’s going on in this complex landscape of the Time War, but also the characters who have been such a rich part of all the stories we’ve done so far – we can really explore their experiences in this chaotic space and this enormous conflict.”
Volumes 1 and 2 of Doctor Who – The War Doctor Rises are now available for pre-order exclusively here, either as a collector’s edition triple CD box set, starting at £22.99 per volume, or as a digital download, starting at £18.99 per volume.
Big Finish listeners can save money by pre-ordering The War Doctor Rises Volumes 1 and 2 in a bundle for just £44 (collector's edition CD and download) or £36 (download only).
Further details about Doctor Who – The War Doctor Rises, including cast, writers and story details, will be announced nearer the release date.
All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.
Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mailout of collector’s edition CDs will be delayed, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

The Doctors...
Tumblr media
How many have you seen?
I started watching #4 on the local PBS station back in the day. I really didn't know the lore of the show at the time and was quite upset when he regenerated into #5, whom I was used to seeing as Tristan Farnon on All Creatures Great And Small.
I have no memory of #6 and #7 but I did pick up a few episodes of #1, #2 and #3 here and there over the years. I only saw #8 when I came across a VHS of the abortive TV movie they made to try to relaunch the series on Fox.
I watched #9, #10 and #11 faithfully, and drifted away from #12 after Clara left.
I quite liked Jody Whittaker as #13, but the stories were terrible. Once again I drifted away early in her second series, but I intend to pick that back up. I'm quite interested to see David Tennant regenerating as #14 (#10 reborn???) and re-uniting with Donna Noble.
(edit)
Whoever prepared this graphic of all The Doctors left one out...
The War Doctor.
Tumblr media
The War Doctor is a little known regeneration of #8, before he regenerated as #9. The War Doctor decided to regenerate as a warrior to fight the Time War and as such did not feel that he deserved the title of The Doctor. It's very very complicated. Showrunner Stephen Moffat created The War Doctor for the fiftieth-anniversary special The Name Of The Doctor when Christopher Eccleston would not return to the role. John Hurt played the character in the special and until his death in 2017, when Jonathon Carley began playing the part in other media.
Like I said, it's very very complicated, as befitting everything to do with Doctor Who.

Not so sure about this new War Doctor casting. Jonathon Carley is great in the role but it feels a little too soon after the death of John Hurt

Note
do you think it's time for Doctor Who as an entity to move on from the endless Time War/Warrior/War Doctor stuff it's been doing since 2005?
Hasn’t it, though? We haven’t seen much of it on TV lately, and while Big Finish is still cranking out Time War content – The War Doctor Begins with Jonathon Carley; War Master; whatever Gallifrey: War Room is going to be – it’s a fraction of what we were dealing with a few years ago. (Remember Susan’s War?) And while I’m not caught up with the Eighth Doctor boxsets, it seems like he’s been liberated from the long slow march toward war that defined Dark Eyes etc.
Is it possible that you’re referring to this week’s new Doctor of War boxset with Colin Baker as the Warrior, a literal “Doctor-no-longer”?
Tumblr media
If that’s the case, I utterly reject the idea that this is some sort of regression! Going back and rewriting history, uncoupling characters from their established beginnings and endings so listeners genuinely don’t know where they’ll end up, is exactly how Big Finish should have been treating their Main Range stories all along: in fact, it’s perfectly in-line with what Lawrence Miles did to the Third Doctor in Interference.
I’m hoping to listen to it sometime this week and will write up my notes!

There’s a box set sale going on at Big Finish. If you’re looking for something to listen to, here are some I recommend:
Robin Hood: The Complete Series - A set of six audio books read by various actors from the 2006 BBC show. None of these stories are really deep or gripping, but they made for fun and nostalgic listening on a recent road trip.
Doctor Who: The Lost Resort and Other Stories - The first story is so exceptionally good it makes up for the weaker middle story in this three episode Fifth Doctor set. Definitely a must for fans who wanted the Doctor to have a chance to mourn more over the death of Adric.
Doctor Who: The Eleven - The Sixth Doctor and Constance Clarke are a great combo anyway, but when you add Mark Bonnar’s The Eleven and Lucy Gaskell‘s Miskavel, that’s a perfect set-up for something special.
Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures - Respond to All Calls - I think this is the weaker of the two volumes of Ninth Doctor stories Big Finish have released so far, but it’s still very, very good. In particular, I enjoyed the first and third stories in this set.
Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures - Ravagers - Speaking of which, THIS is the stronger of the two volumes of Ninth Doctor audios. All the stories are interconnected and build to something big. Christopher Eccleston had so much fun recreating his Doctor here and it shows.
The War Master: Killing Time - A really good set of interconnected War Master stories. The second and third stories featuring Jo Grant/Jones and Nyssa are especially chilling.
Doctor Who: Dalek Universe, volumes 1-3 - I love, love, love Dalek Universe. It’s the Tenth Doctor, thrown unexpectedly back before the Time War and separated from his TARDIS, trying to escape to his own time. Anya Kingdom and Mark Seven are great companions and there’s a lot of variety among the stories. Of the sets I think Vol. 2 is my favorite, but they’re all well worth the time of anyone even remotely interested in the Tenth Doctor.
Doctor Who: The War Doctor Begins - Forged in Fire - Another set I absolutely love. Jonathon Carley creates a wonderful version of a newly regenerated War Doctor and the stories are well constructed and enjoyable.
Doctor Who: Stranded vol 1 and 2 - “Stranded” sounds like it shouldn’t work. I mean, the Eighth Doctor and his companions trapped in 2020 London with a non-functional TARDIS? Didn’t the show do a “trapped on Earth” thing already with the Third Doctor? Yes, but no you DO need this because it’s so very different than anything else the TV series or Big Finish have done previously. The stories are exceptional, in fact vol. 2 has one of my all time favorite UNIT stories (I cried buckets while listening the first time, no lie). The supporting cast is excellent. Just trust me on these, they’re worth your time.
Gallifrey: Time War 1 - I haven’t listened to the other Gallifrey Time War box sets so I can’t speak to them, but vol. 1 is fantastically weird and features not only Romana II, but also Ace, Leela, and the War Master. Just a really good glimpse into the beginnings of the Time War from the perspective of Time Lord politics.
There are some other interesting titles in there like The Paternoster Gang, The Robots, The Diary of River Song, The Avengers, and some Master-related volumes, but most of them I either don’t have or haven’t listened to yet so I don’t have anything to say about them.
Have fun!

The War Doctor Begins - Forged in Fire review
Overall, it is a solid volume. When it comes to the Time War series, there have been better stories - but not many. The scripts are very solid, especially the last story. It is certainly of higher calibre than the stories from the previous War Doctor box sets. It would have been a fantastic release if it featured any other Doctor. But, herein lies the problem.
There is still nothing in this box set that any other Doctor wouldn't do. I keep waiting for the definitive War Doctor story that would be able to justify his existence as someone his successors would refuse to acknowledge, committing atrocities that others wouldn't. That is the only framework in which this character, as he was introduced in DotD, is supposed to make sense. And, I think it's finally time to acknowledge that this is never going to happen. Five has witnessed and done greater horrors. The most mellow Doctor of them all, in the span between Spare Parts, Creatures of Beauty, and Omega, witnessed one genocide, and was responsible for two others. I compare this to that, and, I have nothing.
What's worse, they keep teasing these things, because they know that this is what people expect. But, they keep pulling a bait and switch. Threatening to destroy Karn - bit out of the blue, could be interesting if they spin it right - but, no, no, just an empty bluff, zero intention to actually do it. Killing a group of refugees as a mercy to save them from being enslaved - nope, just throwing wool into the eyes of the audience surrogate, and everyone is actually safe and sound as part of a masterplan that Seven would have had for breakfast, (considering Seven imprisoned whole planets inside his TARDIS, and was quite content with allowing vast patches of the universe to be destroyed, just to prove a point). Killing a dalek - a barest minimum, considering how many daleks were killed by the Doctor both before and after the Time War - and even that is rather half-assed, certainly nothing more extreme than what Ten has done sending them into the void. Also, what was the bit about the Daleks not knowing the word "mercy" in one of the episodes on TV - but I digress. At one point he was threatening to hit someone over the head with a rock, which is something the Doctor is certainly not a stranger to, and even that goes absolutely nowhere.
And, there is still the "don't call me the Doctor" galore. From the very beginning of his regeneration, by the looks of it. Based on absolutely nothing. At least it's a bit less shouty, less "don't call me that!!!!!1111eleventyone", which is... an improvement, I guess. Still, after a previous box sets, it got so old so fast that I decided to turn it into a drinking game - take a sip every time the usage of his name is corrected. It didn't take long for me listening to this boxset to want to do it again. Just water, mind, but by the end, my bladder was certainly quite full. I also could have very much done without "Eight was too gentle, too weak-minded, too foolish, too naive" to get through the war. I guess all regenerations feel ill at ease regarding their predecessors, and some badmouthing is not necessarily uncommon, but it is rarely such a blatant lie. I am yet to see anything from the War Doctor that Eight wouldn't have done, or, indeed, hasn't done something similar in the past.
Finally, a minor nitpick - Jonathon Carley is doing a fantastic job perfectly replicating John Hurt's voice. BUT, it's a perfect replica of his voice from 2010s - not from whatever age he was based on the cover image. To my ear, he sounds a bit too old for what they are going for. It's one thing with the actors themselves aging, but with impersonators... I guess it's damned if you do damned if you don't, but, in this case I do feel like a less faithful performance to the previous box sets and closer to something like this would have been a bit better.

Susan meets the War Doctor
12 June 2024
Carole Ann Ford stars in two new box sets of full-cast audio drama, as Susan is reunited with her grandfather – but not as she’s ever known him before.
Tumblr media
No Gallifreyan was safe from the Time War. While the Doctor resisted the call, his granddaughter Susan did her duty and signed up to fight the growing Dalek threat.
Susan (Carole Ann Ford) teams up with the War Doctor (Jonathon Carley) in two brand-new box sets, Susan’s War: Family Ties (due in August 2024) and Susan’s War: Grandfather Time (release date TBC). Each of these box sets contains two episodes of exciting audio drama.
Family Ties and Grandfather Time continue the story of the 2020 release, Susan’s War. That box set featured Susan meeting the Eighth Doctor, at a time when he was reluctant to join the fight. Now, as they’re brought together on new missions for the Time Lords, she must come to terms with her grandfather being a very different man – the War Doctor is ready for battle.
The Worlds of Doctor Who – Susan’s War: Family Ties and Grandfather Time are now available to pre-order as collector’s edition CD box sets (+ download for just £15.99 each) or as digital downloads only (for just £12.99 each), exclusively here.
The stories in Family Ties are:
The Lost Son by Sarah Cassidy  The Golden Child by Peter Anghelides
And, the stories in Grandfather Time are:
The Last of the Kaleds by David Llewellyn The Voord Alliance by Andrew Smith
Producer Heather Challands said: “It's my privilege to continue the story of Susan. Carole Ann Ford takes the lead so well and it's so exciting to have her front-and-centre in these stories, tackling the Time War. These episodes really confront Susan with the family that she's lost, and the family she still has! For the first time, she's going to meet the War Doctor. But will she approve of what her grandfather has become?”
Script editor Matt Fitton added: “This is a different angle on the Time War – it’s much more to do with diplomacy and espionage. Susan’s not a soldier; she uses her brain and her empathy for forging alliances with other species for the Time Lords. And I like to keep an aspect of the 1960s present, so we touch on characters, situations, and alien races that hark back to the time when Susan was travelling with the Doctor.”
Big Finish listeners can save money by pre-ordering both Family Ties and Grandfather Time as a bundle for just £30 (collector’s edition CD box sets + download) or £25 (download only).
All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.
Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mail-out of collector’s edition CDs may be delayed due to factors beyond our control, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.
-- Oooh! They're bringing back Alex Campbell again, I see (Sonny McGann). And Commander Veklin! ( @riversofmars )
