Joseph needs to work on his transition off lifts, sometimes it looks like he stumbles off of them and it takes a while to get that momentum back

Welcome to Night Two of Week 5! This time, our contestants talked about their prom experiences as Dancing With the Stars threw a prom in the middle of October!
We also had the return of the dance marathon. The remaining eleven couples first danced the hustle as the judges voted for which couple to remove one by one. Daniel and Britt were the first casualties, earning only one additional point. The longer the couple stayed in, the more points they got. After Wayne and Witney were tagged out, the couples switched to the lindyhop and could leave their assigned squares. In the end, it came down to Shangela and Gleb and Jessie and Alan. And Jessie and Alan won, winning eleven additional points as well as the titles of Prom Queen and King.
So who had the prom of a lifetime and who had one they'd rather forget? Let's check it out!
(Note: While the show combined the scores for the two nights, I did not so my standings will look different from the ones on the show).
Joseph and Daniella: I'm not very surprised Joseph ended up going home this week. We're now reaching the point where people are going to go home, no matter how much they've improved or how likeable they are. At least he gets to go out on his cha-cha to "Shut Up and Dance," which was a lot of fun and a high point for him.
Gabby and Val: Gabby got the season's first official perfect score! (Selma's score the night before did not count and was mostly symbolic). She danced a tango to "Good Girls Go Bad" and while Gabby is technically good, she still needs to bring more emotion into her routines. But now that she's reached the top, can she stay there or will someone dethrone her if she's not careful?
Charli and Mark: Charli did not tie with Gabby and Wayne this week! In fact, she came in right behind them before the marathon and her extra points pushed her up the leaderboard again. But she had a fun jive routine to "You Make My Dreams by Hall & Oates. She and Mark have an easy chemistry that really helps with their routines and Charli just keeps wowing everyone week after week.
Shangela and Gleb: Shangela has come into her own and has been declared an honorary fly girl after her cha-cha to "Waiting for Tonight." Shangela and Gleb had a a good mix of performance and technical skills for a wonderful routine. She may be the best positioned to possibly upend our front runners and could hoist the mirrorball trophy with Gleb if she continues to improve like she has.
Wayne and Witney: Wayne also got his first perfect score, the second of the competition, with his samba to "It Takes Two." The dance went well with the song and Wayne nailed the rather difficult dance. He had a lot of fun with it and continues to be the best male dancer in the competition. He could be the one hoisting the mirrorball and if he's not, he's likely going to be the one standing next to the couple hoisting it because I think he can make it all the way.
Jessie and Alan: This probably was Jessie's best dance but I do consider the Viennese waltz one of the easier dances. (With the caveat that I am not a dancer). And she is higher up since she was Prom Queen and got 11 points. She really shined in the hustle and the lindyhop so brava to her. Could this be the turning point for her? Only time will tell.
Heidi and Artem: Heidi did a jazz routine to "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and brought some early 90s to the ballroom. She did struggle a bit and had a few missteps but it was still fun to watch. Especially as Artem decided to dress as a nerd who got to dance with the cool girl. Interesting take but still a pretty good routine. And Heidi did last longer than her daughter in the dance marathon, so she gets to have some bragging rights this week.
Trevor and Emma: Trevor broke the bottom two streak! He was not in the bottom two and bounced back with a good jive to "Basket Case." He invoked his punk stage and looked very sexy, if you ask me. I hope this is good sign for Trevor and he'll continue to dance for a bit longer.
Jordin and Brandon: Jordin danced a contemporary dance to her own song, "No Air." She went to prom the same year she released the song and it played at her prom, with the spotlight on her. But her classmates were not impressed by it at all. So she got to reclaim that moment with a light but beautiful contemporary piece with Brandon. Jordin is still one of my favorites and I can't help but root for her, especially when she leads a singalong of her song in the skybox.
Daniel and Britt: I liked Daniel's cha-cha to "Sexyback" but it seems the judges disagreed with me. I hope he isn't losing the momentum. He really could be the dark horse instead of Trevor on the men's side but he needs to stay consistent. I love watching him dance and hope I can continue to do so for a bit longer.
Vinny and Koko: This was probably Vinny's best dance and his chance to go to prom since he didn't get to go to his. He and Koko danced to "You and Me" and looked very gracefully. But as I've noted, I find it hard to mess up the waltz unless you just stand there while your partner dances around you. But Vinny has been giving it his all, which is impressive. Does it mean he should win? Probably not. But he'll be interesting to watch until he's eliminated.
Our double show week is now over! Next time, Michael Buble will pop in as a guest judge while the remaining couples dance to his music.
See you then!

Thoughts on the Marathon
This was me the whole time
Tumblr media
So let's just start here. The marathon has been done many times throughout the seasons and the order has usually always made sense. Even though certain choices can be debated, usually it's a conversation of 10th vs 9th vs 8th or 1st and 2nd. It's never a person going out first when they probably should've been 6th or 7th or 6th when they should've been in the top 3. And that's what happened last night. So let's look at the actual order and talk about it.
11. Daniel and Britt 10. Vinny and Koko 9. Jordin and Brandon 8. Joseph and Daniella 7. Wayne and Witney 6. Gabby and Val 5. Charli and Mark 4. Trevor and Emma 3. Heidi and Artem 2. Shangela and Artem 1. Jessie and Alan
I'm not deaf, so I won't be talking about the issues surrounding that with the marathon. I do have concerns about him being thrown in the corner, but that might've been a place he actually asked for that would best accommodate him. I can't make comments about that. BUT, what I will say is that he shouldn't have been the first out. He was dancing. He was mostly on time. The technique was passable. His issues weren't that bad. But having him out before Jessie and Trevor, two people I felt should've been first and second out, was when I knew this was some bull. Vinny being out second while again, Jessie and Trevor weren't really contributing much other than lifts and walking, was another red flag. Vinny would've been third out in my book because he was actually dancing and not relying on lifts with subpar dancing.
Now let me talk about Jordin's departure. It was odd. They were doing well. Then Vinny was eliminated and they ushered him out, but they ran into Jordin and Brandon. And literally 10 seconds after Vinny left, they picked up Jordin's name paddle. First, why weren't Vinny ushered into the crowd so that they could head up the stairs toward the side. He's in an awkward place, right next to another couple. Everyone in those spaces should've gone out to the side and the producer should've shown them the CLEAR path so they didn't mess anyone else up. Second, why was Jordin eliminated literal seconds after Vinny? They never do that and in that whole marathon, that was the quickest turn around. The judges know that mistakes like that happen. It was stupid. And again, they should've gone to at least 5th. AT LEAST! It was just STUPID. Joseph went out in the right spot. But again, he was better than Trevor and Jessie, so them still being in while Joseph was eliminated was STUPID.
Now the next big headscratcher. Wayne going out in 7th????? HUH????? He should've been top 3. Not saying he was the clear winner. But him being 7th was foolish. The judges are stupid. Wait a minute, I'm actually getting upset again. I understand that sometimes they have a storyline that they wanna fulfill or whatever. But can they at least make it believable??????? So far, not a single thing they did made sense and I'm looking at these judges, wondering what kind of criteria they used to judge the marathon. At one point on twitter, I asked if they were judging it based on vibes. I cannot believe the decisions the judges continued to make. And y'all know I don't care for Gabby like that. But her being out in 6th????? Again, stupid! She was fine. Not breaking a sweat. And everything Heidi was doing, Gabby did better. So I'm confused. I need to know what they used to make these decisions. Were the judges under the influence? I don't know. It literally made no sense.
Now Charli being out 5th would've made sense if Jessie and Trevor weren't still in, stinking it up with their two bad moves and their poorly (Trevor) executed or ridiculous (Jessie) lifts. They were basically marking the dance. But again, Trevor and Jessie were RIGHT THERE. We finally got Trevor out only after he tripped. All that tells me is they would've taken him to the top 2 easily if he hadn't almost busted his ass. STUPID!
Now the top 3. Heidi was fine. Top 3 was fine. But I just don't understand the decision making. Of the top 2, Shangela should've won. She clearly had it. Shangela ate Jessie up. Jessie winning was bs. I don't get it. I don't think I ever will. That stupid "she needs the points" narrative went way too far. It has happened with several celebs during the marathon, but at least they deserved their placement finishes in the top 3. But Jessie winning was a sham. And if they are gonna use their marathons as a mechanism to push a narrative along, then don't ever bring them back. That was a complete and total sham. And it made me want all of the judges fired. They make questionable decisions all of the time. But last night was egregiously stupid and made me question all of their credentials.
If the person who wins the marathon is only viewed as the person who was up in the air the whole time, kicking her legs, then that's a problem. The show and the judges have once again bit off more than they can chew. They thought they were smarter than the viewers and could pull off this rigged marathon with no one batting an eye. And yet here we are, everyone seeing right through their bs.
The camerawork was dreadful and the fact that two dances were done for the marathon instead of just one, was silly. It made me think there was suppose to be 2 marathons and they just combined it when they found out that Selma was leaving the competition on Monday night.
As for the results, I'm glad that the judges didn't blame us for the wacky bottom 2 that we got. That lays solely at their feet and I hope they felt foolish for having to choose between Heidi and Joseph right now. It should've been Jessie and Trevor. And it probably would've been had the judges actually judged the marathon like they had any kind of sense. That being said, Heidi is not getting votes, so I fully expect her to be gone soon. Yeah, that's it. Let me know your thoughts. And I'll talk to you all soon. Hopefully the judges aren't nearly as bird brained next week as they were on Tuesday.
