Do our eyes deceive us or did Black excellence overtake the Emmy Awards? Of the 27 categories, five were won by Black actors, prompting host Anthony Anderson to refer to the show as the “chocolate” Emmys.
And we can’t contain our pride!
Quinta Brunson became the first black actress to win lead actress in a comedy since Isabel Sanford took home the trophy for her role on The Jeffersons in 1981!
And she also made history when she and Ayo Edebiri, who won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Show, became the first two black actresses to win both comedy categories in the same year.
Niecy Nash-Betts picked up her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie while “RuPaul’s Drag Race” won for reality competition show for the eighth time. (RuPaul also won best reality host at the Creative Emmys last week, bringing his Emmy total to 14.)
But it’s not just the Black Emmy winners we’re vibing over.
It’s the “Martin” reunion with Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Carl Anthony Payne II, and Tichina Arnold (it was so extra!) and Marla Gibbs as funny and vibrant as ever presenting alongside Quinta.
And we can’t forget Mama Doris (as in Anthony Anderson’s mother). Never has the show’s timekeeper been such a scene-stealer!
