Rainy Miller x Space Afrika — A Grissaille Wedding (Fixed Abode)
Tumblr media
youtube
As performers, writers and producers Rainy Miller and Space Afrika (Joshua Inyang and Joshua Reid) are key figures in an eclectic Manchester centered electronic, avant-pop scene that includes artists Blackhaine, Iceboy Violet and Richie Culver. Grissaille is a style of painting done exclusively in shades of grey. It can serve as a base upon which color is overpainted and/or as method of imitating (sculptural) relief. Both aspects are present on this collaboration, A Grissaille Wedding where the songs whisper from doorways, alleys, industrial wastelands. Foggy, weakly lit by the reflection of rain splattered streetlamps on oil slicked asphalt. A new version of Northern soul built from grime, dubstep, machines both shiny and decrepit. With Miller’s vocal often autotuned these songs flicker between despair and hope, soliloquys of love, loss and trauma blooming into a cruel world framed by Space Afrika’s impressionist soundscapes, which highlight the vulnerability and quiet defiance of the narrators.
“Summon the Spirit/Demon” opens as an invocation. Miller’s whispers and coos shrouded in a murky Burial like atmosphere as Voice Actor intones invitingly. Miller’s multitracked singing follows, pitched high to emphasize his fragility. “Maybe It’s Time to Lay Down the Arms” features Mica Levi and Miller over a stumbling trip hop beat and lysergic swirls of synth and backing vocals. A lonely plea for inner peace. On “Sweet (I’m Free)” RenzNiro and Iceboy Violet reflect on finding self-acceptance and love amongst damaged lives in ruined towns as Space Afrika’s soundscape slips and churns beneath them. Celestial backing vocals, billowing synth pads, violins and a simple cyclical acoustic guitar riff give the “The Graves at Charleroi” a hymnal intensity as Coby Sey sings of the passage through grief. Richie Culver delivers the spoken word piece “I Believe in God, When Things are Going My Way” against a background of quavering strings and beatless ambience. He plays with the ambiguity of his interlocutor, is it God? A lover? Himself?
“I need rules, false promises/The laws keep me safe/Safe by your side/4th of December, a victim of my own thoughts” feels like a summary of the project’s main theme. Paradox, complexity, hope and despair are ever present. The greyness throws trauma into stark silhouette but splashes of color, hard won knowledge and the will to express the fragility of self can lead to some form of acceptance and allow one to move forward. A Grissaille Wedding forges all this into a hauntingly beautiful set of songs which aren’t afraid to bare teeth as well as wounds.

By • Olalekan Fagbade BREAKING; Appeal Court delivers judgment in suit seeking to stop Timipre Sylva in Saturday’s Guber Elections An Appeal Court on Friday cleared former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva to participate in the Saturday governorship election. This comes less than 24 hours to conduct Governorship election in Bayelsa The Appellate Court on dismissed the last of the chains of suits seeking exclusion of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship candidate in the gubernatorial poll. Delivering judgment in an appeal instituted against Sylva and two others by Mrs Isikima Johnson,, Justice Binta Zubar held that the suit was not only unjusticeable but brought in bad faith by the appellant against the respondents. The Court agreed with MrJames Ogwu Onoja, SAN, that the allegations of taking of oath of governorship office twice being held against Sylva cannot stand in the face of law because the first one had been invalidated by competent Courts. In the appeal marked CA/ABJ/CV/1052/2023, Justices Zubar also dismissed the allegations against APC that its April 14, 2023 primary election which produced Sylva as flagbearer was done in contravention of provisions of the law. In unanimous judgment, the court agreed with Onoja’s arguments that the overwhelming evidence adduced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and APC pointed to the facts that all legal steps were taken in the conduct of the primary election. Onoja had in his brief on behalf of Sylva narrated how APC adopted direct primary as mode of electing the governorship candidate . Also, how a 5-man Electoral Committee on April 14 conducted the election in 106 Wards of the 8 Local Government Areas of Bayelsa. The senior lawyer also also listed how Sylva with 52062 votes came first, while the appellant came fourth with 584 votes behind Joshua Maciver 2078 votes, David Perewomini Lyon 1584 votes, Ongoebi Etebu 1277 votes while Daumiebi Festus Sunday came last with 557 votes. The Appeal Court said with the undisputed evidence coupled with the monitoring report of INEC as a statutory body, the allegations by the Appellant that that Sylva emerged without a primary election has no foundation. “From the uncontroverted independent report of INEC, it was clear beyond any doubt that a valid primary election was conducted by APC and monitored by the electoral umpire as required by law.” Justice Zubar also held that the case of the appellant was statute barred having been instituted outside the 14 days allowed by law as a pre- election matter. In totality, the Court of Appeal upheld the judgment of a Federal High Court in Abuja delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo which on Sept. 26 dismissed the suit for want of merit and substance. The appellant 7had, by an originating summons, dragged APC, INEC and Sylva before the Federal High court, praying for an order to disqualify him from being allowed to participate in the coming November governorship election in Bayelsa State. She had predicated her grouse against Sylvia on two grounds Sylva had been elected into governorship office twice and took the oath of office and oath of allegiance twice. She also claimed that the April 14 primary election that produced Sylva was illegal and unlawful, having been allegedly done in contravention with APC’s guidelines. The High Court however dismissed the suit while the Court of Appeal affirmed the dismissal of the suit. ( NAN)

Supreme Court nulifies APC from Gombe South senatorial election
Tumblr media
The Supreme Court on Thursday in Abuja nullified the purported participation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 25 Senatorial election in Gombe South Senatorial District of Gombe State. The Apex Court kicked out APC and its purported candidate, Joshua Lidani out of the Senatorial contest on the ground that the party failed to conduct a primary election known to law for the purpose of candidate nomination. Delivering judgment in an appeal brought before it by the APC, the Supreme Court held that the party murdered internal democracy in the ways and manners its primary election for Gombe South Senatorial candidate nomination was conducted. Among others, the APC Primary Election Panel that conducted the primary election allocated the same figure to all the Senatorial aspirants that participated in the purported primary election result sheet. In the same vein, the report of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) monitoring team, read in the open court confirmed that no primary election was conducted at the time the monitoring team left the venue due to the threat to lives but only heard that figures were allocated to all aspirants later. Although the APC made spirited efforts to persuade the Justices, the persuasion was, however, rejected as the Apex Court upheld the concurrent findings of both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal to the effect that the party did not comply with laws in the conduct of the purported primary election. In a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice John Inyang Okoro, the Supreme Court scolded APC for turning the head of internal democracy upside down. Justice Okoro said primary election must be conducted in accordance with the laws, regulations and guidelines of political parties. “It is crystal clear that the appellant (APC) did not do well in the instant case and the implication is that the party has no candidate in the last Senatorial election in the Gombe South Senatorial District. “If they won the Senatorial election, too bad for it because it has no lawful candidate and if it lost in the election, the better for it”, the Court held. Justice Okoro subsequently dismissed the appeal by the APC. Read the full article

Space Afrika - hybtwibt? (2020)
Tumblr media
タイトルは『have you been through what i’ve been through?』「私が経験した事をあなたは経験しましたか?」

Space Afrika – Honest Labour (DAIS)
Tumblr media
Photo by Chloe Magdelaine Timon Benson
youtube
In the modern city we are often more observed than observing, passively surrendering anonymity to CCTV even as we share our secrets and solipsism on social media. Manchester duo Joshua Inyang and Joshua Reid (who is currently quartered in Berlin) play with these tensions and dichotomies on their latest album Honest Labour. Post dubstep ambience that evokes ambivalent, alienated journeys through streets empty but pregnant with possibility and threat are interspersed with vocal cuts that speak of the search for love, connection and reckoning. Burial is an obvious touchstone here and although Space Afrika employs a wider sonic palette, they suffuse Honest Labour with the radical empathy that characterizes tracks like “Come Down To Us.”
We begin in twilight, the echo of passing voices, an electric crackling in the air on almost deserted streets that sets the ambience for the record. On “LV,” cello, guitar and violin emphasize the burden of solitude and longing. “Like Orchids” and “Meet Me At Sachas” follow overheard conversations against police sirens wailing by and growing rambunctiousness indoors — is this the joy of meeting up or is shit about to go down? The vocal tracks are more direct. Manchester choreographer and MC Blackhaine produces a vitriolic anthem to Lost Britain on “B£E” which begins as classic grime but ascends with layered strings that subvert the patriots’ hijack of Elgar.
On “U,” rap collagist kinseylloyd riffs on the image of “99 Red Balloons” over a woozy, spacious beat. “The colors/the balloons/the fluid from my heart/an arrow heading for it/pre-destined to puncture/suspended now in animation/for what could have/did not.” On “Girl Scout Cookie” avant chanteuse bianca scout’s multi-tracked vocals sigh over pizzicato strings only to be interrupted by a bickering couple after which a thick jazz double bass fills out the bottom end. “Honest Labour” closes the album on a stately neo-classical note with strings and piano that speak to dignity and will.
Inyang and Reid create a nocturnal mosaic of eavesdropping. Direct conversation and keen observation give voice to the disenfranchised in isolationist Britain. An Honest Labour.
