Their lyrics also remind me of The Amazing Devil but only because of how the words are strung together. It's a mix of beauty, metaphors (I assume), and 'slang' that anyone would use. Rabbitology only has 3 songs out at the moment but I am ABSOLUTELY a fan and excited to see what else they put out!! Maybe I'll scream about it on here when they do 😇

Dark Cabaret and the Circus

Throughout my years of listening to Dark Cabaret music, there is an undeniable and large elephant in the room, though this elephant is not so much a problem as it is just, cool and standing there.

The Dark Cabaret aesthetic is built on a couple Ideas; 1920's vaudeville, Burlesque, and the post WWII Weimar styles. The energy that is depicted in these traits are the key identifiers but, through some of these things there is another very strong indicator of the "Dark Cabaret" style.

Dark Circus. What is the difference really? Both have a love for dark stripes, morally grey themes, and themes surrounding performance and theater, and are just so cool! The reason I am making this post is just to point out some sound differences depending on the type of cabaret person you are. The genre, though so mixed already, is even more specific once you get into the bottom of the barrel (as I would say I have.)

Dark Cabaret music on its own has a very mellow beat pattern. Typically having lyrics that are related to the aesthetics of the music, stories from history, darker lyrics about life and death, sex and love, and many other things.

Then there is the aesthetics of Dark Circus that get thrown in the mix. These elements bring in a much more comedic tone to the music. Lots of bells and whistles and horns and laughter can be heard in these numbers. They're typically quite absurdist in their messaging and have quicker tempos to level with the wild energy these numbers put out. The Dark in the term is found in the lyrics of the music, or the aesthetic of them. A real pioneer in my opinion for this genre meshing is Emilie Autumn with her Circus aesthetic and Cabaret music mixing and bringing a whole other energy to the sub-culture.

To reiterate, this post isn't negative or trying to be snobby I am just so fascinated by this little music genre and love to analyze the how and the whys!
