Chisoo finding out Gitae was sent to kill him in Long Time No See. I just wasn't expecting for him to find out in the middle of a fight. I almost couldn't handle the fight or the explanation after it.

Ugh when they started joking about Y-series and novels and thought the whole idea was just ridiculous I already KNEW Gene was about to tell them everything and then tell them to shut the fuck up, because my boy stood on business. Of course shit went left...Gene outed his Daddy for having a male lover and then his daddy put his 26 yr old ass on punishment.

Kim Jun Ho fucking DYING in Kissable Lips. SPOILER ALERT! I just KNEW they was going to figure out a way to keep both Jun Ho and Min Hyun alive, but then Jun Ho literally went fucking BLIND the morning after they had sex. AND THEN HE DROPPED THE RING HE WAS TRYING TO GIVE MIN HYUN TO REMEMBER HIM BY. AND THEN HE FUCKING DIED IN MIN HYUN'S ARMS! AND UNLIKE TDWBMD HE DIDN'T FUCKING COME BACK.

Choco and Milk disappearing and leaving Jung Woo alone again in Choco Milk Shake. We all knew it was coming, Jung Woo too, but I was dreading it. Just knowing that his two favorite people were just going to fucking disappear! (I don't think this gif is from that scene lol)

Bai Lang having a breakdown in the street in the middle of a thunderstorm. All of Bai Lang's trauma gave me anxiety but that scene took the cake. He was just so out of it and it made me so scared for him.

So what's one more? @lachikapercebe also asked for this list, but requested only my top five; however, since I already started the list without a specific target number from Anon Two, and Korea gives some of the best confessions in the genre mixed with color coding, I can't reduce the list now. It's too late for me to trim it. I am attached to each pick. They are my children, and I can't desert them, so . . .

Top Ten Korean BLs

Rising Star - Love Tractor

I don't trust Korean BLs. A majority are too short, so either the beginning is confusing or the ending is flat, but unless Love Tractor completely fumbles the second half (which it could because . . . Korea), this will be a yearly top and even possibly an overall top for its country and all BLs. It's that good to me. It's hitting all the normal K-drama notes while being oh-so-very-gay. And as a rural queer, it pleases my soul to see country life presented in such a kind and beautiful way.

#10 - Roommates of Poongduck 304

Mr. Petty Peter Jae Yoon independently earned a spot on this list. Ho Joon was a jerk and a true nemesis when the show began, but Jae Yoon started effing up Ho Joon's home life the more Ho Joon kept messing up his work life, so it was a beautiful tit-for-tat the first few episodes; then, Ho Joon lost focus and wanted a consensual workplace relationship. His father appreciating his new attitude and rejection of his ladies' man ways was a delight to witness since we all knew it was due to him falling in love with a man. And oh boy did he fall in love. That entire conversation of Jae Yoon saying it's impossible for two men to fall in love, only for Ho Joon to respond that it was impossible for him NOT to fall in love with Jae Yoon is a top tier confession for me.

#9 - Blueming

I have issues with Blueming solely due to its ending because I was just as pissed as Siwon was at Daun. Maybe even more so. All was going well; then, the end of episode nine pulled a Thai episode eleven, and DAUN TOLD HIS MOM TO PICK THE FILM! I understand men in love do dumb shit, but that was a bold choice, and a very, very, VERY wrong one. As the youths say, "that was not the move." However, the cinematography was delicious like their silhouettes with that bewitching blue backdrop and their first kiss was realistic. Pretty kisses are cool and all, but the awkwardness of desperately wanting someone yet not knowing how to physically perform is true to many people's experiences and should be spotlighted more.

#8 - Choco Milk Shake

I only trust two entities with poly: Thai director Jojo, and Korea's Strongberry, so the fact that Strongberry did not give me poly when it was so clearly laid out is the reason this show isn't in the top three. It had a supernatural plot, great characters who were all well cast, and a happy ending, so WHY NOT POLY? I don't care if the rest of the world is ready or not. I'M READY! We are getting a second season, so if I if get a kiss AND a vocal acknowledgement of Milk and Choco's love for each other when their love for Jung Woo was well established in season one, this will cement its place in my heart and on this list forever.

#7 - Light on Me

Sixteen episodes with most running about thirty minutes?! A love triangle where I could root for both love interests?! A straight boy who earned his spot at the queer table?! Light on Me had it all and then some! Looking at my various lists, it's clear I am not fond of high school dramas, yet I was seated twice a week to see how our neurodivergent baby boy, Tae Kyung, fared that week in his adventure through social norms and annoyances, like trying to help a fellow peer by giving him back the dildo he dropped in the hallway, but getting yelled at instead. I was not Team Shin Woo until that cellphone confession, and then all I could see was Shin Woo. I'm telling y'all, Korea understands how to confess its unwavering love. Gets me every time!

#6 - The New Employee

As the BL fandom continues to evolve and expand, we will get more BLs geared toward adults and workplace dramas, but hopefully, they take the approach that The New Employee (and Thailand's Step by Step) did and make the work environment part of the drama. Working adults, sadly, spend a majority of their time at work, so finding love at one's job seems reasonable, but if anyone has experienced coworkers breaking up, that shit can get rough, real quick. So having to navigate a relationship with someone you work with, especially someone of a higher authority position, ON TOP OF being queer can be stressful, and is something I want more BLs to explore. There are levels to being out, and for most queers, being out at the job is not a possibility, but finding love anywhere is always a possibility, particularly for our late 20-something virgins.

#5 - Semantic Error

The fact that this came out in 2022 is beyond my understanding only because it seems like I have appreciated it for at least five years. This has become a comfort watch when it first started as a "nothing else is on" watch. I have never cared so much about honorifics in my life as I did watching the slow transition of Sang Woo’s emotional walls crumbling under Jae Young’s affection through language. As much as I hated the idea of forced collaboration (aka group projects), seeing the way Jae Young squirmed his way into Sang Woo’s every waking thought and had him seeing red to the point that Sang Woo was saving screenshots of Jae Young’s Instagram posts was a delight and one of the major reasons I keep returning to it. But the layered confession about Sang Woo finding Jae Young, a man, attractive which lead to Jae Young's countdown kiss is, once again, the reason Korean BLs win in the confession department.

#4 - The Eighth Sense

I'm still really bothered by some of the discourse that came out of this show about how it was better than everything else ever because the comments were reductive about the BL genre, yet some of the comments resonated with elements I loved about the series, mainly its look at mental health and trauma. It was a beautiful show, but the message it carried throughout about depression being isolating and taking the light out of people's lives hit me in a way that if this was the Thai list, I would have left it off because it felt like a personal attack. Wanting someone to save you from yourself, but terrified to drag them down with you was not the plot I wanted, but was the story a lot of us needed to see. We also needed to witness someone actively going to therapy. Let's continue this trend!

#3 - Our Dating Sim

"Have you been well . . . without me?" - Put this on my tombstone because I died and came back to life from this utterance alone. Episode four was already killing me, but once Eddy snapped and allowed all his emotions to spill out in front of Ian, the show came for all my past lives and future ones too. Deceased. I wrote this about the show while it was airing, but no other show has done the leave-him-because-I-love-him plot as well as Our Dating Sim. This show nailed it then made a billboard to boast about it because it was perfection. Ian's reasons for leaving were valid, but the show really shined by allowing Eddy to voice his anger at being ghosted for seven years by his best friend and someone he loved. It even touched on the trust issues that stem from someone saying he loves you only to abandon you. Just know I have NOT been well since this ended.

#2 - To My Star 1 & 2

The first season was almost perfect. The cat/dog energy, the "If it's hard for you, I'll come to you" confession, and the budding kink of Ji Woo kissing a tiny bloody wound on Seo Joon all served in a quick nine episodes gave me everything I needed, so I thought this would be my #1 the second season two was announced, but understand the sequel hurt me. The foundation was great: everyone came back, it had more episodes, the episodes were longer, and the conflict always existed in the first series, so a last-minute twist wasn’t invented. Yet, every single episode hurt. Much like I Told Sunset About You, it was realistic to the point that I expected it to end with pain. If season two was its own show and not a sequel to one of my favorites, it would have ranked higher because it was beautiful, but knowing the magic the first series possessed, and having to be a bystander to all the angst for EVERY EPISODE WITH NO RELIEF was tough. But, somehow, here I am secretly hoping we get blessed with a third series. That’s the power of the Star.

#1 - Long Time No See

Small flex - I've been involved with an international queer film festival for over a decade. I've seen easily over 1,000 pieces of queer media including feature films, short films, and documentaries through the screening process, which only adds to my always growing personal watched list. Long Time No See was one of those films. It didn't make it into the festival because I think it was already available on a streaming platform (maybe?), but it was a top for me then, and it's still a top for me now. Is it a BL? Not really. Is it a show? No, it's more like a two-part movie. So why am I allowing it to reign at the top of this list? BECAUSE IT IS AMAZING! In 2017, we were still getting the bury your gays trope shoved down our throats, so a film about two assassins getting a happy ending was a miracle. I read comments from some who did not like the portrayal of "toxic love" but were probably fine with Mr. and Mrs. Smith beating each other with cooking utensils for all the world's children to see, so God forbid, the queers do anything like want to kill AND fuck each other. Niña, Pinta, and Santa María, LET THE GAYS DO CRIMES TOO! Oh, and it's Strongberry, so because of this film - In Strongberry I trust.

Day 13 - Give 5 Good Boys a Gold Star

Prapai (Love in the Air)

Even in his playboy days he didn't leave a trail of destruction. He's kind and caring, has an excellent relationship with his siblings, and even helped raise them when there was no need to. Then Sky came along and he loved him, pushed him when needed, supported him through the bad times, and provided a very lonely boy with an instant family.

Sure he has a naughty streak and an aversion to buttons but that doesn't take away from the fact he gives up control to Sky, allowing Sky to Dom him, so that Sky can feel safe and in control after his sexual assault.

And we love a good boy that can be what his partner needs. Gold Star indeed.

Zhao Zi (HiStory3: Trapped)

This boy truly believes in the justice system and gets heartbroken when fellow cops are dirty. He loves his grandmother a great deal, is there for his friends, loves helping people, is beautifully innocent, a fiend for food, a sucker for muscles, and suffers from liking bad boys! But we will forgive him for that last one because Jack was very hot!

He got Jack to give up his life of crime to become a hot house-husband so Gold Star!

Li Ming (Moonlight Chicken)

He saw Heart for Heart and not some deaf kid. He didn't let Heart get away with shit just because he was deaf. Li Ming tried to change himself to be more accessible for Heart rather than just making Heart change himself to fit into the world.

He pushed Heart to achieve and live life. He also stood up for himself in the face of his uncle's judgment of his life choices.

No mean feat for a 17/18 year old so Gold Star awarded.

Thun (He's coming to me)

As a child he left offerings at Mes's grave because Mes was alone and when older he broke Mes out of the graveyard to go and experience life. He helped Mes acclimatise to modern life and let him try things he'd never done before all the while dealing with his own self-acceptance of being gay and falling in love with said ghost.

Truly a good boy his entire life, Gold Star.

Choco (Choco Milk Shake)

A literal good boy on the count that he's a dog in a human body!

Choco's love for Jung Woo made him intensely loyal to the point that he came back from the afterlife and was willing to give up his chance at reincarnation just to spend one lifetime loving Jung Woo when he needed it. But he listened to Jung Woo when he asked him to return to the afterlife so they would meet again later and he agreed to Jung Woo's wishes.

Gold Star awarded, especially for his enduring puppy traits while in human form.

It's the very last day of 2023, which means it's time for my annual look back and some number-crunching with my AO3 stats and writing over the year!

That song. I hear English language songs so rarely in BL that when they do appear they I feel extra aware of them. And the lyrics of that one hit me like a gut punch. Hold me closer, please don���t leave me now. My god. I’m about to start sobbing.

There’s only one episode left and I honestly still can’t tell if the ending will be happy or sad. They a certainly preparing us for a sad ending—making it sound like Milk and Choco have to go back or they’ll… disappear? that’s part of the metaphysics that I’m confused about. Something sad anyway. Plus Jung-woo’s ex is already waiting in the wings to provide hope for him and us that life goes on and Jung-woo can love again. And this isn’t even subtext, the ex explicitly said this basically this to Jung-woo!

But. I don’t know, but the fact that they’re preparing us so heavily for the sad ending give me hope that there will be a last minute twist and they’ll get to stay and be permanent humans. The Pinocchio ending. Maybe I’m delusional. But I’m still clinging to hope. Plus Milk hasn’t even figured out what he’s feeling yet, let alone kissed the bar owner! We need time for that and it’s not going to fit into a 15 to 20 minute episode* alongside the heartbreak of leaving!

*I am confused about how many episodes are left. The original number was 10 episodes, which would mean only one more. Now mydramalist gives 11, but the 11th is scheduled for December 20th, in three weeks, which makes it sound like a special episode after the story ends. Although they also say episode 10 is not until next Thursday (Dec 6) so maybe mydramalist just isn’t to be trusted. I really don’t want to wait that long. Does anyone know what’s happening?

First day of the rest od your life

Chapter 1

It was warm, so warm. Jung Woo wasn't used to wake up into warm. His life wasn't exactly warm for a long time. 

It used to be once, when he was young. When he was a kid he was used to wake up surrounded by warm. Milk and Choco sprawled over his body in various positions, huddled into his body, always close to him. 

But then they died and he... He stopped to be kid. 

Warm had ended too. 

But this morning... Jung Woo blinked his eyes awake and moved his head trying to apprehend his surroundings. He was warm, overheated really. 

And there were bodies of the boys he let inside last night sprawled over him. 

Boys who claimed to be his long lost childhood pets. His childhood best friends. 

On his left lean body, sharp features, fluffy hair that (un)expectly made resemblance of kitten ears. 

On his right soft golden skin, soft hair... Softness personified. 

Jung Woo closed his eyes again an let himself drown into the warm. 

It's new. It's crazy. 

But it felt so right.

He would need make some kind of decision soon.

Believe them or not. Let them stay or not. 

But for now... It was still dark and he felt so warm... 

The rest could wait. He gets closer to the bodies around him and go back to sleep. 

Tomorrow. He would think about it tomorrow.

Red, White & Blue: 17 Korean Idols Who Were Born In The USA

July 4th marks Independence Day in the USA! To celebrate, we're focusing on Korean idols who were born and raised in the land of red, white, and blue, then later made it big in the Korean music industry. While most of the idols on this list come from Korean heritage, the ethnicity of others include Taiwanese, Thai, Mexican, African-American, and more! There are many Kpop idols who were raised in the USA and consider themselves Americans. However, to keep the list shorter, we decided to only include people who were actually born in the States. Check out our list below, then let us know which American Kpop idol is your favorite!

Jay Park - Edmonds, Washington 

Jay Park, born in metropolitan Seattle, became famous as a member of the idol group 2PM before ultimately leaving to become a soloist. His career soared when he started the entertainment company AOMG. It then reached new heights when he was signed to the famous American label Roc Nation, the company founded by Jay-Z. Although he started as a Kpop idol, most fans now consider him a true hip-hop artist/non-idol. However, his fans who loved him since his idol days have continued with Jay throughout his growth and changes.

Eric Nam - Atlanta, Georgia

Eric Nam was born in Atlanta, where his family stills resides. In fact, he just recently performed at his hometown as part of his U.S. tour. He later attended university at Boston College and was about to begin a career as a business analyst in NYC. However, he decided to pursue his real dream of becoming a singer after MBC saw one of his cover videos on YouTube and invited him to Korea to compete in a music show. Just a few months later, he was one of the finalists and ended up being signed by a music company to begin his official solo career.

Ailee - Denver, Colorado

Born in Denver, Ailee was actually raised in New Jersey. She originally made her debut as a singer in the USA, where she was signed to a small label in NYC. After uploading videos to YouTube, she made the decision to go to Korea for an audition. When she sang, the label fell in love with her voice and decided to sign her on the spot. She then made her Korean debut in 2012 and went on to become one of the most famous voices in Korea, earning respect from both fans and music critics for her powerful and emotional vocals.

Jessica and Krystal Jung - San Francisco, California

Jessica and Krystal Jung were on vacation and enjoying some time in a shopping mall when an agent from SM Entertainment spotted them. Although the label wanted to begin training Krystal at the time, the girls' parents felt  she was too young and decided that only Jessica would be allowed to begin her music career. Jessica went on to debut as a member of SNSD, and Krystal was also allowed to finally pursue her dreams several years later at the age of 12. She then debuted as a member of f(x), joining her sister at SM.

SEVENTEEN's Vernon - NYC, New York

Born in NYC to a Korean father and an American mother, Vernon moved to Korea as a child. He stated that he was a very ordinary kid with normal hobbies and friends. However, during his second year of middle school, he was scouted by an agent as he went home from school on the subway. Vernon went on to debut as part of SEVENTEEN in 2015. The group quickly rose to the top ranks of Kpop, due in part to their unique concept of being "self-producing" idols.

NCT's Johnny - Chicago, Illinois

Johnny Seo auditioned for SM Entertainment at the age of 12 years old during the 2007 SM Global Audition in Chicago. Through the audition, he was ultimately accepted and became his training period. Through his time with SM Rookies (a training group which eventually spawned Red Velvet and NCT), he gained a fanbase even before his official debut. Ten years after passing his initial audition, he finally made his debut as a member of NCT 127.

Amber Liu - Los Angeles, California

At only 25 years of age, Amber Liu has already been active for nine years in the Kpop industry. Back in 2008, she was only one of two people who passed a local audition to get into SM Entertainment. After training for one year, the Taiwanese-American made her debut as a member of f(x) in 2009. In 2015, she also went on to debut as a soloist and quickly became one of the most-loved figures in the Kpop industry. Since then, she has also made her acting debut and also runs a successful YouTube channel where she connects with her fans in English.

KARD's BM - Los Angeles, California

BM, real name Matthew Kim, trained for four years in Korea before making his official debut as a member of KARD. Before his debut, he worked as a dancer and appeared in projects like the music video for "Choco Chip Cookies" by Goo Hara. In December of 2016, KARD dropped their first song "Oh NaNa" as a pre-release project. They then went on to make their official debut in July 2017 with "Hola Hola." BM quickly became well-liked among Kpop fans for his down-to-earth sense of humor and amazing dance skills.

GOT7's Mark Tuan - Los Angeles, California

Mark Tuan was born in California before moving to Paraguay and Brazil. He and his family eventually moved back to the USA where he grew up and attended school. In fact, during lunch at school, Mark got on a table and started dancing and acting silly with his friends. A JYP Entertainment staff member happened to be there at that moment and decided to recruit him immediately. Mark said that he only decided to audition because his school encouraged him to do so, and it wasn't until he first stood onstage that he fully realized that he had truly found the place he belonged.

SEVENTEEN's Joshua - Los Angeles, California

Joshua has always been a very musical person and first started performing as a member of the praise team at his church in California. He later attended a festival in the USA and was playing the guitar when Pledis Entertainment took notice of the young musician. After watching him and considering things for approximately a month, they decided to reach out to see if he would want to become a Kpop idol. Joshua has stated before that music is his life, so as such, he agreed to sign with them and made the move to Korea.

BTOB's Peniel Shin - Chicago, Illinois

Peniel may be a member of one of Cube Entertainment's most popular groups, but in fact, he first auditioned to become part of JYP Entertainment. After auditioning in his hometown of Chicago, he was signed by JYP and went to Korea to train. He stayed with the company for two years and even made an appearance in San E's music video "Tasty San." He eventually left JYP and was signed to Cube, where he was added to BTOB as the seventh and final member of the group before making their debut in 2012.

Alexandra Reid - Lawrence, Kansas

Alex, as she was known during her time as a member of BP RaNia, actually made her debut in the USA before she decided to venture into the Kpop world. Born in Kansas and raised in Texas, Alex was cast in a program for the Discovery Kids' network. Her MySpace profile was later noticed by a casting agent, who convinced her to move to NYC. She was then signed to Def Jam Recordings and Sony Music, where she was managed by the famous Scooter Braun. She made her official debut in 2011 and released music steadily for several years before officially joining BP RaNia. Although she left the group in 2017, she then went on to make a comeback as a soloist in March of 2018 with "East West."

Kevin Woo - Danville, California

Kevin's mother, a former fashion model from Korea, enjoyed watching Korean music shows at home. During this time, Kevin begin to notice groups like TVXQ and Super Junior and grew interested in Kpop. He later begged his mother to take him to a JYP and Rain concert being held in California and became even more interested in Kpop as a result. During a visit to Korea, he asked his parents to allow him to audition for some companies and was  subsequently cast at the age of 15. He made his debut only a few months later as a member of XING. He later re-debuted under a new label as a member of U-KISS and achieved great success in both Korea and Japan. Kevin now works as a soloist, entertainer, and musical actor.

NU'EST's Aron- Los Angeles, California

While attending a festival in Los Angeles, Aron was approached by a casting agent. After deciding to audition, Aron went on to place first at the 2010 Pledis USA Auditions. As a result, he was signed to the company and began his time of training at the age of 17. He had been accepted into the journalism program at NYU but decided to give it up to pursue music. He then began to make appearances— including being a backup dancer and appearing in music videos— as one of the "Pledis Boys." He then made his official debut as a member of NU'EST in 2012.

2PM's Nichkhun- Rancho Cucamonga, California

Nichkhun's parents are from Thailand and his grandmother is Chinese, but this talented guy was born in California. However, he later moved to both Thailand and New Zealand before ultimately returning to California for school. In fact, it was at the local Los Angeles Korean Music Festival (the same festival that NU'EST's Aron was attending and subsequently cast at) that a casting agent from JYP Entertainment approached him and asked him to audition. He was working as a highschool coach at the time, but decided to take a chance on music and move to Korea to begin training.

Samuel Kim- Los Angeles, California

Born to a Mexican father and Korean mother, Samuel's name is actually Samuel Arredondo. However, when he decided to become a singer in Korea, he took on his mother's maiden name for his stage name. He was first signed to Pledis Entertainment and began training at age eleven to become a member of the group SEVENTEEN. However, he left the company and signed to Brave Entertainment after Pledis reportedly decided he was still too young to debut. He then became a member of the short-lived duo 1PUNCH. However, it wasn't until his appearance on season two of "Produce 101" that he finally began to receive the attention he deserved. After gaining a huge fan base due to the show, he made his debut as a soloist. A few months later, he made his official Japanese debut as well

There are numerous other Americans who have gone on to become great Kpop stars in Korea! Some of them were born in the USA (like U-KISS's Eli Kim) while others were simply raised there (like 24K's Cory). No matter where they were born or where they may travel, we know they will always be representing America in the best way possible— as talented, funny, kind, amazing artists and human beings! Day 14: Top 5 Sad Boys

Tae Myungha from Love for Love's Sake. Literally the most sad boy. So sad that he was sent to a videogame realm to try life again. So sad that it became an actual mission to make him happy. Myungha took care of everyone but wouldn't allow anyone to take care of him because he didn't feel like he was worth it. It took him almost literally being RIPPED from his new world to realize he wanted to be loved and saved and happy. He goes straight to the front of the "You Need a Hug" line.

Jung Woo from Choco Milk Shake. The most miserable boy. He was so sad and lonely that some unknown pet god decided to send him back his dead pets as humans because they were around when he was at his peak happiness. There was literally no one else around to make him happy, his young uncle was trying though. But to have some higher power send you back your pets must mean that you are the saddest of sad because no one loves a person quite like a pet does.

Uea from Bed Friend. Isolated sad boy, done dirty by damn near every single person in his entire life. He had every right to be as defensive and standoffish as he was, no one was protecting Uea so he had to protect himself. That poor man had trauma on top of trauma and IDK how he was functioning at such a high rate. He didn't deserve any of the turmoil he had been put through literally since childhood. I hope his birthgiver, her husband, his ex, and his boss are all rotting in jail cells with pretty matching ankle shackles and chains. Chain gang bitches.

Seo Jaewon from The Eighth Sense. A sad boy with the same type of sad I am. I know the pain and trauma of losing a brother. Especially one you felt responsible for. He had basically turned off his own feelings and allowed the people around him to mistreat him because he didn't even feel like it was worth fighting or dismissing. I don't know if he just didn't care or if he felt like he deserved all the bad people in his life for not protecting his brother. Happy One Year Anniversary to this series btw.

Yang Yan Feng from Love in Translation. A sad boy just out there looking for love and to have a successful business. Carrying the weight of a debt inherited by his parents while they hid out in China somewhere. He even pushed his crush off on another woman because he didn't want to get him involved. He yelled in that poor sunshine boy's face and lied because he didn't want him to get hurt. The boy just needed a hug and a helping hand.
