my piece for @morphogenzine. i wanted to explore feelings of isolation, the relationship between physical space and memory, and how they play a part in Kyle's life. growing up in the same rooms in the same building all his life and feeling alone, that all being changed one day by the happiness of spending time with people he loves, and how those memories can then make those same rooms feel emptier than they ever were before once that happiness is gone

Thinking about Kyle Klim. About being lied to by the only people you know, for your whole life. About learning the truth and watching the only person you love, who brought warmth into your life that you'd never had before, she wants to die. She's going to die. And you can't stop her.

He's just SO tragic. He's been raised for a purpose he didn't understand and was given no chance to stop it!!! Luna was also created for this purpose, but she at least KNEW what she was doing, and in her ending she willingly let herself get destroyed because she wanted to protect the humans around her. Her death is also a tragedy, but at least it's one she walked into willingly. Kyle is an amnesiac. He knows nothing about himself until he suddenly learns that it's too late to stop Akane's death.

Even in the timelines where she lives, he's still a victim at the end of the world, his identity worn by her as a mask. After the game is over, he'll obviously still love her, but will he be able to trust her again, knowing she knew and even started Dr. Klim's plans, something which led to his lonely life, and the lonely life that will continue? Can he place his trust in the one and only person he loved when she erased his memories and used his presence without giving him any choice in the matter, while he was asleep? He'll be happy she's alive, sure, but I doubt things will ever be the same between them. Even when he (or, well, "?") is asking around in the secret ending, the game's participants (with the exclusion of Luna and Dr. Klim) obviously don't know Kyle: nobody can be attached to the K/Kyle from the timelines where he was actually awake because they can't remember those timelines. That's so lonely. He's a victim but he was still part of the creation of the game, and it just keeps affecting every relationship he had and likely will have in the future :(
