He gives practical examples on strategies talking about games he played while not so veiledly referring to the traumatic experiences that happened during before or after said games or training sessions like he never talks about them upfront like he just skids around all the trauma that clearly happened but he just doesn’t give emphasis because what matters is exy!

nora has the opportunity to do the funniest thing by writing kevin’s book about kevin explaining game strategies and technicalities of how the game should be played for 300 pages straight. no thoughts no feelings just pure exy

"kevin day doesnt see more than the exy court" is such a blatant lie. kevin day i saw ur emo ass crying in the middle of the court telling neil to run away so he wouldnt be hurt. i saw u telling jeremy knox to be careful with jean moreau. i saw ur ass keeping the letter that said wymack was ur father. faker! u care! and u see so much and everyone writes u off as some psycho athlete but ur a lover boy! i see u, kevin day!

imagine after the Riko Roast the Foxes just start saying “you know, I get it,” at any minor inconvenience or annoyance. It becomes their new team-wide inside joke. Nicky burns his toast and just looks at the toaster, “you know, I get it.” Dan and Allison talking with each other about an annoying prof, “you know, I get it.” Matt locks himself out of the room, “you know, I get it.”

Neil being annoyed/embarrassed by it only encourages them to do it more and they start dropping it all the time. Andrew says it to Aaron every chance he gets. Practice basically stops when Kevin finally says it for the first time after everyone keeps fumbling the new drill. Dan even catches Wymack saying it while on the phone with Andritch. The new freshmen have no idea where it came from but eventually they start using it too.

And when Neil finally gets fed up with someone else and uses it again a year and a half later at another banquet or event, the team dissolves into an uproar like they just won championships.

things i believe about kevin day

he has very few memories of his mother. similar to how jean's life in marseille is a "fractured mess, dreams that dissipated before he woke enough to recall them with any clarity" (TSC, p.11), the same is true for kevin. he was in the nest longer and arrived younger.

the memories he does have of her are blurry and incomplete, flashes here and there. he does not remember her entire face. he remembers freckles and bright skin, the furrow in her brow when she'd watch exy.

his life before her death is also scattered.

he had a pretty strong irish accent, but it disappeared over his first three years in the nest full time. there are a handful of words where it slips out, but it's a rare thing, and it's slight enough that no one really notices.

his relationship with riko is immensely complicated. he is terrified of him. he hates him. he loves him. he misses him. he still looks over his shoulder to tell riko something. he still looks for riko on the court.

by the time we meet kevin in tfc, kevin is aware of how toxic and possessive his relationship with riko was. he still isn't ready to address and unpack the whole thing.

he and riko would work on their aim by trying to hit a ball at the same spot in the same wall over and over again. somewhere in the depths of evermore, there is a ball-sized indent in the wall.

kevin did the same exercise for hours on the outside wall of his hotel in the time between finals and riko's funeral.

he was more afraid of tetsuji than he was of riko. a different kind of fear.

he is terribly, horribly afraid that his mother knew what tetsuji was involved in and capable of. he is terrified that his mother knew what kind of guardian he was to riko, and what she was condemning kevin to in the event of her death.

he chooses to tell himself that she didn't know. that she never would have sent him to tetsuji if she did. but that doubt haunts him for a long time.

he doesn't remember her well enough to be entirely confident of her love for him. he spent every summer with tetsuji and riko, and he isn't convinced that she didn't know how badly tetsuji treated riko.

nathaniel haunted kevin the same way he haunted jean.

he almost told wymack he was his father several times, especially in the beginning.

kevin day is not a coward. he is terrified. he is trying to rebuild his entire life after it fell apart entirely. he is a victim. he was wrong for involving jean in his escape plan, but he could not have escaped without jean's involvement. he is not wrong for escaping. he is struggling. he is doing his best, and sometimes, it isn't enough. but he's trying.

kevin day cares about the people around him. he cares so much.

Okay I know we like to talk about how Kevin is unloved and ignored and brushed aside to deal with his issues with alcohol but I feel like that isn’t quite right anymore. Since Nora said she wished she’s been kinder to Kevin we’ve been given so much proof that he is cared for: Wymack making a deal with Kevin to make sure he’s going to therapy as much as he’s letting him drink. Kevin admitting Betsy carried him through his first year at Palmetto. Neil choosing to accompany Kevin into the courtroom instead of going after Andrew. Andrew going with Kevin to California, leaving Aaron and Neil AND knowing it would be hard for him to be back there. Jeremy reminding him he’s his friend too and pleading with him to take care of himself. Confirmation that Jean still loves and believes in Kevin despite everything. Kevin Day is not unloved. Sure, not everything is handled or handled well and there’s plenty room for improvement but it’s something, it’s enough that he’s still standing surrounded by people willing to cover him when he’s down and fight with him whenever he’s ready. Kevin is stubborn and strong and he WOULD do it alone if he had to but he doesn’t because he is not alone, he has help and he WILL get better
