A Taste of Gold and Iron

I really enjoyed this book! And yes Kadou’s hair is much longer than what is currently visible…but with the full prince hair he was looking a little too femme so it’s ...loosely braided where we can’t see it. ‘A Taste of Gold and Iron’ by Alexandra Rowland is sometimes described as “The Goblin Emperor meets Magnificent Century” and in my opinion…they are pretty spot on with that one. There are cute tropes, a light hearted love story, lots of interesting worldbuilding… and most importantly it was really fun. The story is set in a fictional “Ottoman Empire” so I used said fashion as the starting point for my ‘redesign’ but these are not to be taken as accurate, I did take liberties, it is a fantasy setting complete with a hard magic system.

Tadek calling Evemer "honeybee" unironically is THE BEST. Him being so bratty at the beginning but then becoming bffs with both the boys is hilarious. I disliked him soooo much at the beginning, but now I'm dying and wanting him in every other scene that isn't just Evemer and Kadou

I just finished A Taste of Gold and Iron and I can’t stop imagining Evemer dragging Kadou to a chess board any time something happens. Like Kadou just woke up and Evemer is herding him towards the chess board before he even gets his coffee just to see how the absence of coffee affects the game. I bet he wanted to play after one of their near death experiences. This man is ridiculous.

This took me probably 12ish hours over 2 days, and I am absurdly proud of it. Illumination around the edges based on a 16th c Turkish manuscript because why wouldn't I?

Pride Weeks 2 and 3! (I have so many ideas going on at once OMG)

Week 2 is Prince Kadou and Evemer from “A Taste of Gold and Iron” by Alexandra Rowland. Beautiful story with royal/bodyguard trope. One day I will draw Prince Kadou in ALL the gorgeous clothes.

Week 3 is another favorite ship - Delloso de la Rue and KP Hob from Dimension 20’s “A Court of Fey and Flowers.” I was a feral creature during that season. The outfits and the drama - just FAB. (I often think about Rue making owl noises when they’re frustrated, similar to what Stolas and Octavia make.)

Last year, I read “A Taste Of Gold And Iron” by Alexandra Rowland and I loved it! Queer characters, amazing fantasy world building, plot, romance, some fighting… also, oaths of fealty <3 Here are Kadou and Evemer, the main characters.

Btw I've recently read 'A taste of Gold and Iron' by Alexandra Rowland and I deeply loved it. If you're looking for an extremely well-written representation of the anxiety disorder, deep and round characters, the sweetest slow burn please read it and cry with me. Kadou and Evemer my loves. Tadek has my heart, too.

Do not read this if you're looking for a high fantasy with a detailed world building and a great villain.
