The first wedding chapel in Las Vegas opened September 29, 1933.
There are no existing photo of the business simply known as "The Wedding Chapel." It was here 513 South 5th (Las Vegas Blvd), later known in the 40s as Lucky Wedding Chapel. It was a 24-hour service from the start.
In the late 20s California and other states adopted "Gin marriage laws" which established waiting period for marriages aimed at preventing marrying while drunk. Nevada's no-wait marriages and the boom in automobile travel turned Las Vegas a marriage destination. City Hall was the logical choice. The Wedding Chapel offered convenience.
“New Super Service To ‘Tie the Knot’ – Happy young couples contemplating marriage in Las Vegas need no longer worry about the many and varied details … J.D. Foster has opened a ‘wedding chapel’ at his office, 513 South Fifth street and he not only agrees to shoulder all responsibilities but will supply witnesses for the occasion if they are desired.” - Review Journal, 9/29/1933
Other chapels to open in the 30s included Gay Wedding Chapel, Potthoff Chapel, Hitching Post, and McKee's circa ‘39 which is still open today as Graceland.
In later years, Wee Kirk O' The Heather claimed to be the “original” and oldest chapel in Las Vegas, a claim that was went unchecked at the time the chapel was demolished in 2020.

Bi-weekly Progress Report (9/12/2023)
Tumblr media
Progress has been relatively smooth, but that's primarily due to the fact that a majority of the action will begin next week, when we have to finally start shooting for the practicum. Instead, these past 2 weeks have been focused on the likes of preparation for the actual interviewing process.
My mentor and I had a meeting last week Wednesday where we had discussed with the actual team we were collaborating with, and we had decided to do a post-meeting meeting after that was finished, and it was a rather eye opening experience. I had asked him about his feelings and his thoughts on his process and it gave me a lot of things to think about, such as how he personally had to leverage himself and what he had to do in order to make things work.
I had taken notes during the meeting, and above is a snippet that is more personalized for me as it has more to do with my own personal project. I had brainstormed questions with my mentor and we had come up with several that could be modified that I could potentially ask if I wanted to either do a google survey or if I wanted to go ahead and try to conduct interviews.
I have one more meeting tomorrow Wednesday, where we will discuss more about the Voices of Kalaeloa project and what we could work on, as well as being able to brainstorm more on what I'm hoping to get out of this internship.

SUNNY ALL YEAR ROUND
Kicking off the New Year with some friends and fun in the sun at Kalaeloa Beach Park! This past weekend was a pleasure to be surrounded by bright smiles and joyful laughter as we soak up underneath the Hawaiian sun. Feeling the warm kiss of the sun shining upon us and the sparking blue ocean splashing around in the melody of the cool salty breeze whispering through my hair. It is in fact such a wonderful way to celebrate the New Year!

Sunday, November 17, 2019 Kia’i ke Kahaukani: Lā 84 Mauna Kea: Lā: 129
Today, many of us have Kalaeloa / Kahuku on the forefront of our hearts/minds. As part of our hui will be making their way out to Kalaeloa tonight to answer the kahea and stand in solidarity, I'll be praying for all who continue to put their bodies on the line because of their ancestral sukubun / kuleana to mālama 'āina  - including all the kia'i at Kalaeloa, Hūnānāniho, Kahuku, and Mauna Kea.   I also continue to hold close to my heart and in my prayers all those across the Pacific and back on Turtle Island who who are working to protect and heal our precious land and water. In my dreams last night, I saw the tears and laughter lines on the faces of some of our brave elders holding the line at Henoko. They couldn't hear me when I tried to speak to them,  but they smiled when I joined hands with the kia'i and fellow Shimanchu here on these islands and sang... On that note, the crew here at Bachman continue to hold protocol 3x daily, every day at 8am, noon, and sunset*.
At 4pm today, some of Kumu Snowbird's haumana will be leading our weekly workshop. If you're in the area, come join us to learn/practice the hula, mele, oli, and pule used in protocol for the Mauna.
*Quick reminder that sunset 'aha here at Bachman / Wise Field will now be held at 5pm, starting today.
Ku Kia’i Mauna! Rise For Henoko! Together, We Rise!!

Hawaii Closes Its Last Coal-Fired Power Plant
Hawaii Closes Its Last Coal-Fired Power Plant
A state law bans the use of coal for energy production beginning next year. Hawaii shuttered its last remaining coal-fired power station on Thursday, a major milestone in the state’s ambitious effort to transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2045. The station, the AES Hawaii Power Plant near Kalaeloa, in southwest Oahu, provided more than 11 percent of the state’s electricity in 2021,…

New Predator Proof Fence Protects Endangered Hawaiian Waterbirds on Oahu
Tumblr media
A new predator fence at Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge on O’ahu protects endangered waterbirds and native and migratory birds from invasive species like cats, rats,  and mongooses. The 3,300-foot long fence surrounds 30 acres of wetlands –  the first predator fence in the world designed specifically to protect a wetland and waterbirds.

”We expect this fence to help our endangered waterbirds by preventing invasive, non-native mammals from preying on their eggs and young,” said Eric VanderWerf, Director of Science at Pacific Rim Conservation.

The Honouliuli Unit of the Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge provides essential habitat for the endangered Ae‘o (Hawaiian stilt), ‘Alae ke‘oke‘o (Hawaiian coot), ‘Alae ‘ula (Hawaiian moorhen), and Koloa maoli (Hawaiian duck). Habitat loss and predation have contributed significantly to the decline of these native species. The installation of this fence and removal of predators should improve reproductive success for the species that nest here.

“Protected wetlands like those at Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge are essential for the future of endangered water birds here in Hawai‘i,” said Acting Refuge Manager Shannon Ludwig. “Working together with partners like Pacific Rim Conservation, projects like the predator fence contribute to the recovery of these endangered species.”
This is the third predator fence on a national wildlife refuge in Hawai‘i, and the second built by Pono Pacific Land Management. Pacific Rim Conservation and the Service also have partnered to build predator exclusion fences to protect endangered, native, and migratory birds from invasive predators at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on Kaua’i and James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge near Kahuku on O’ahu.

Pearl Harbor NWR was established in 1972 as mitigation for construction of the Honolulu International Airport Reef Runway. The Honouliuli and Waiawa Units are managed under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Navy. The Kalaeloa Unit, once part of the former Barber's Point Naval Air Station, was established during military base closure proceedings in 2001 to protect native plants. Through these cooperative efforts with the Federal Aviation Administration, the State of Hawai‘i, and the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made the Pearl Harbor NWR a reality.

On March 4th, 2022 at the University of Hawaii West Oahu: Academy of Creative Media Building, I did an interview with Senator Maile Shimabukuro. Rep. Shimabukuro is the Senator for district 21:  which encompasses Kalaeloa to Kaena Point on Oahu's leeward side.  For this portion of my project, we talked about Government and the way they impact our lāhui. In particular, we talked about the way she as a senator impact her constituents.
Rep Shimabukuro has many roles in different committees in the capital. We discussed further the things that she and those committees have done. Same as Dr. Taketaʻs interview, I saw a portion that will intertwine with my interview that I will be doing within the next couple of weeks with the Growing number of homelessness portion of my project.
For this interview, we had 3 point lighting: natural backlight from the window, key and fill in front of the Senator. I borrowed the tripod from ACM and I had my sound equipment to record the audio that was needed. For this location, I was able to be secluded from the public by doing the interview in the Incubator space in the building. This made this interview go well and smoothly. My camera cuts off after a given amount of time of recording, so we took a pause and continued with the recording. We did this within the time frame that I gave the Senator and it allowed her time to have to talk to us about where we see this project going.
I want to thank my professor for allowing us to film in this space, @keolacm491 for being my assistant for that interview, and @nadinemc for taking the b-role video above.
