the mysterious benedict society books truly had some of the most homosexual characters of all time. mr benedict? gay ass old man, had a whirlwind affair with that sailor guy when they were in the navy together, believes he'll never find love in this homophobic world and doesnt try anymore. reynie muldoon? gay little autistic boy who gets bullied for being gay YEARS before he realizes it's true. sticky washington? bi and has several crises about it in his teenage years. kate wetherall? wouldnt even question it she's just into who she's into (mostly girls) and that's how she vibes. pencilla and rhonda? those are lesbians who met a gay ass old man and decided he's their dad now. the fuckin,, mean girl martina or whatever the fuck?? that bitch was lesbian as hell. sq pedalian? gay boy trying his best. dont even get me started on the campy gay villain that is ledroptha curtain. hell constance is 3 and that little asshole is a mean lesbian in the making if i ever saw one
#never realized any of this as a kid bc i had a lot of internalized homophobia myself#but looking back on it. damn they really were all gay huh#tmbs#mysterious benedict society#nicholas benedict#reynie muldoon#sticky washington#kate wetherall#constance contraire

Trenton Lee Stewart was like: Neurodivegence is a superpower. Fuck capitalism. Killing people is wrong when there are alternatives. Immigrants are heroes. Women are awesome. Black people are freaking gorgeous. People are good at heart.
And then turned that into a book series. And succeeded.

I really like the idea of the kids being mythical creatures, but, in that way where it's something that just... came into being
Sticky's a nature spirit that manifested in an abandoned library that became overgrown with ivy and mushrooms and plants. He grew out of the warped books being eaten away by fungus, full of knowledge and used to the lonely cold and damp
Kate's a wind spirit that appeared laughing during a festival full of flags and kites and little kids running with pinwheels. She did handstands and somersaults along the banner, laughing along with the children whose skin she tickled
Reynie is the spirit of one of the ancient gargoyles perched on the roof of the orphanage leftover from when it used to be a home. Miss Perumal would talk to it sometimes when she visited, and then one day Reynie appeared in the line up of kids, as if he'd always been there
Constance is the spirit of a child's lost rainboots, discarded and looked over but never claimed as they sat in a lost and found bin, listening to the whispers of all who had let something important go missing. Unwanted, but stubbornly resilient in looking for a home and a way back to somewhere she belonged
#And then Milligan could be like a big wind spirit#But he got captured when he was walking around being human one day#And then he didn't know how to turn back#And Nicholas just kind of runs a home for literally any and everyone who needs it#I don't know a lot about the fine details#But this idea really stuck out to me#I really like the Sticky one#Because I read about this researcher who wrote a book on mycology#Grew mushrooms on it#And then ate those mushrooms#Hmmmmmmmmm so many thoughts#the mysterious benedict society#mbs#sticky washington#kate wetherall#reynie muldoon#constance contraire

Kate's mill pond memory:
“Well, down the road from our house was an old mill pond, and my father took me there to swim once. I was only two, but a good swimmer. The water was cold, the day was warm, and I thought it all felt wonderful. I laughed and splashed until I was exhausted. Then my father — I can’t picture his face, but I can still feel his strong arms lifting me out of the water — he carried me on his shoulders back to our house. I remember asking if we could swim there again, and he said, ‘Of course we can, Katie-Cat.’ I remember that very well. He called me ‘Katie-Cat.’”
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Milligan's mill pond memory:
And just as this realization struck me, so too did the cold waters of the underground stream, and into my mind flashed an image of a mill pond, a lovely place perfect for swimming. I could picture a girl swimming in that pond — so young it was hard to believe she could swim at all, much less splash and dive about like an otter — and in my mind’s eye I drew her near to me, heard her laughing, and, as I took her hand to lead her home, heard her ask me, ‘Daddy, may we come to the mill again?’ To which I replied, ‘Of course, Katie-Cat. Of course we’ll come to the mill again.’
Something I just noticed that might have been pointed out before is that their memories of the mill pond are different. Of course, we have Milligan remembering the "mill again" part while Kate doesn't. But Kate remembers being carried on his shoulders but Milligan remembers that he was holding her hand to walk her home. It would make sense if one or both of them remembered some details incorrectly since it's a memory. Kate was so young while Milligan's memories were buried. Plus it happened so long ago.
#I only just noticed this detail today when I was trying to find the mill again quote#only to realize that kate never remembered the mill again part#and they remember this memory differently#tls must have intentionally wrote their memories differently and I just love that attention to detail so much#like it's a memory so it would make sense if they remembered some things wrong#but most importantly they both remembered one thing the same#that he called her katie cat#AHHH MY HEART#mysterious benedict society#the mysterious benedict society#kate wetherall#milligan wetherall#the wetheralls#mbs meta#mbs analysis#mbs book quotes#the mill pond#mill again#rambles in the palace#posting in the palace

(spoilers)
can we just talk about how hardcore the second book is?
I mean, ALL the books are crazy, but it’s been four years since I last reread tmbs and I remember glazing over the second book, because usually in a series the second book is just like build up and filler for the third one (with the first book having all the magic a first book usually had)
but this series? I aged 58 years reading the second book, and I was disgustingly addicted to it the whole time I read it. I truly thought it was the end for our protagonists. Usually you can see how they might turn a bad situation around, but it just looked straight hopeless when everyone ran out to the beach in hopes that help had come and there was just nothing there. And then, when the Shortcut appeared from seemingly out of nowhere, I cried real tears of joy. I know it’s a kids series and sometimes kids series can be deep, but these kids have to be straight traumatized by their experience in that book. They were pushed to their absolute extremes physically, psychologically and emotionally. From being stuck on the ship in one small confined room while traveling across oceans to a place they had never been before, solving all the riddles, keeping watch during that dark night trying to stay awake with the fear of death and being captured hanging over them, being tied up in that giant room with the ten men ready to torture them, then being captured by Curtain and BEING tortured (shocked), then having to run and carry Mr. Benedict until their hands were bleeding and they were beyond their physical limits, and THEN after seeing their LAST CHANCE for making it off that hellish island not be there having their hopes let down….if I were them, I’d probably just go insane. Its shocking because the whole series is so breezy light, but the actual content, once you think about, isn’t so light at all.
Every character was developed so deliciously. Reynie went from being smart and good at riddles, to being a conniving plotter, who could be a supervillain in his own right. Kate almost bombed a ship full of her worst enemies (willingly), but then found some insane inner strength and decided NOT to. Sticky went through an ego-struggle arc and then, after being the group scaredy cat, suddenly became THE MAN in their darkest hour when they all had to carry that stretcher down the mountain and had nothing left to give (and it almost broke my heart when Reynie narrated it saying smt like “maybe we’re all gonna die but at least I get to witness Sticky in his prime 😌). And Constance? Well. She’s Constance, but her mind reading is sick, and I like the relationship dynamic that grew between her and Reynie in this book.
there was so much inner turmoil from Reynie, and the whole “there’s no good-hearted people in this world” belief he struggled with, resulting him question which Benedict twin he himself was more like, was just so scrumptious. He’s the perfect person to narrate the series, and that becomes clear during this book. Finger lickingly good stuff. And we can’t forget Sticky knocking Constance off the watch tower when a ten-man appeared from the darkness. That made me chortle. Or Kate regurgitating McCracken’s key so they could all escape. She’s just so different.
There are just so many good moments in that book. It’s really truly quite the adventure.

I think it's interesting that, when they all meet up in the middle of the tests, Reynie specifically asks if the other kids called their parents. He didn't assume they were orphans like he was, or even say something like "guardians".
It says a lot about him, both in that he is emotionally aware and understands that his upbringing isn't necessarily a common one, and that he feels nervous about that very fact, and probably didn't want to give himself away as "weird".
Kate tells him "You get it", even though she doesn't have the full information. I don't know, just, the way they all are so used to assuming they're the odd one out, the one who'll be judged, and that isn't true
#Ahhhhhhhh these kids#the mysterious benedict society#mbs#reynie muldoon#kate wetherall#This has been in my Drafts for two years#Since I sped through as much of the Show as I could before it got taken off Disney+
