#BG3 Musing#BG3 Fanmix#Halsin BG3#Halsin#Halsin Posting#my fanmix#i give up this is about as done as it will ever be - i've been talking about this enough i need to get it away from me#i could have made at least one or two other playlists with the number of songs i cut from this#there were some things that hurt me to cut but i figured others had them in their playlists so they're out there#(the impossible dream you will always be famous i am so sorry :(()#i had three goals with this 1. make it more of a timeline in that it follows a narrative order (which hopefully is easy enough to follow)#(it makes sense to me about as much as it is ever going to lol)#2. try to avoid using songs that other individuals have used in their playlists (with a handful of exceptions - i highly encourage you also#take a listen to the others around! lots of good stuff and i figured if you were missing it from this one you can find another with it)#(and if i did use one the context might be different#'closer here is being used in a different way than i usually see it - it's putting more emphasis on the 'you can have my isolation' bit use#in context of the matron and patron for example)#and 3. focus as much as possible on non-romance path elements of halsin's character - i.e. again that's a topic that is highly explored#in other fanmixes to great success - this one is about the childhood he references and the adventures and the capture in the underdark#and the shadow curse and the burying of people he loved and the uptaking of the archdruid position and the healing he did#and possibly did not do#and the radicalization he comes into when his goals are met and he's faced with injustices#and the struggle he has of redefining himself and figuring out who he is after all of it#hopefully the 'eras' are clearly defined but hey it's all gravy from here#honestly if there is one song to listen to that encapsulates halsin for me it's tapestry - highly recommend that#anyway i am blabbing - let the lyrics and such talk for themselves jemi please#but if fanmixes aren't your speed have a kinda nice edit i guess#edit: now with bonus song i just had to add after shamefully forgetting it

Coming off the back of several underwhelming albums (you need to go all the way back to 2010's Together to find traces of the brilliance that infused their first three releases), expectations weren't exactly high for Continue as a Guest, The New Pornographers' first in four years. But it turns out that the restrictions placed on the band by COVID (only rarely able to record together, bandleader AC Newman wrote, recorded, produced and mixed the album alone as contributions from the five other members arrived from their own lockdown locations) might have been just what The New Pornographers needed to recapture some of the magic that elevates them to more than just another Newman side-project.
Although the continued absence of Destroyer's Dan Bejar from the TNP line-up is still felt in the lack of any of his distinctly structured songs or laconic vocal delivery (he has a single credit here, on opener Really Really Light, thanks to a recovered guitar hook from the 2014 Brill Bruisers sessions), Newman's typically abstruse lyrics pair well with the droning, driving songwriting he delivers on this album; he eschews any attempt to match phrasing to melody, splitting words across bars with wild abandon and turning any attempt to puzzle out the lyrics (beautifully delivered as usual by Neko Case and/or Kathryn Calder) into an exercise in frustration.
Ultimately, despite the lack of any standout tracks to match the quality of Sing Me Spanish Techno or Letter From An Occupant, there's still a lot to like here, and the marked improvement over their last few releases bodes well for a future where The New Pornographers are once again able to reconvene in a post-COVID studio, together.

UNDER THE RADAR: NEW Album by The New Pornographers - "Continue As Guest"
UNDER THE RADAR: NEW Album by The New Pornographers – “Continue As Guest” The best New Pornographers songs are more than the sum of their very talented parts. That’s the case for several tracks on Continue As Guest, the ninth album from the band, whose members now include A.C. Newman, Neko Case, Kathryn Calder, Todd Fancey, John Collins and Joe Seiders. Longtime member Dan Bejar co-wrote the…

The New Pornographers Delight Webster Hall with Album Milestone on Saturday
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The New Pornographers – Webster Hall – December 4, 2021
The year was 2005. YouTube was founded by a trio of ex-PayPal coworkers. George W. Bush assumed his second term and Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. On the fateful day that hurricane made landfall, the New Pornographers’ third studio album, Twin Cinema, was released. Pitchfork ranked it No. 150 on its Top 200 Albums of the 2000s and No. 18 on its 50 Best Indie Rock Albums of the Pacific Northwest. In honor of the album’s 16th anniversary, the band has taken Twin Cinema and their debut album, Mass Romantic (which turned 21 last month) for a celebratory tour. They arrived Friday night at Webster Hall to play their first album, followed by Twin Cinema on Saturday.
Webster Hall was overflowing with fans on Saturday night. Barreling through the opening track, “Twin Cinema,” the acclaimed power-pop outfit ran through their seminal album track by track. Band leader Carl Newman exclaimed, “You all look the same,” which was received heartily from the largely Gen X crowd. Before her backing vocals duties on “The Bleeding Heart Show,” Neko Case added to the between-song banter, offering that she appreciated the tour so she could wear her “ugliest pants.” It was Dan Bejar who received the warmest welcome as sang lead on “Jackie, Dressed in Cobras.” Frontman Newman playfully remarked that folks see him but aspire to be Dan. Bejar returned onstage several times for “Broken Breads” and “Streets of Fire” to the delight of the crowd. It’s rare that a band plays an album straight through, as lesser-known tracks are often relegated to rarely being rarely played live (or not at all). “Falling Through Your Clothes” was admittedly a song the band “used to give up on” and, similarly, “Star Bodies” is a song the New Pornographers can now hear themselves more on more readily. It’s indicative of what 16 years as a band can produce live.
After playing the entirety of Twin Cinema, the supergroup returned for another hour-long set, kicking it off with fan-favorite “Myriad Harbour,” off their fourth studio album, Challengers. Moving forward and backward through their catalog, the longtime collaborators seamlessly rotated between songs displaying a prowess only musicians playing for years can develop, a camaraderie and vocal unison aged through time. —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck
