It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.
Tumblr media
On today's episode, I talk to musician Carl Newman. Originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Carl began his musical career in the early '90s as a member of Superconductor, but it was really with his next band Zumpano where he began to find his voice, a style that would come to fruition with The New Pornographers. Since their first album Mass Romantic in 2000, the band has become one of the preeminent indie rock groups of the 21st century, with nine albums to their name, all of which are great. Carl has also recorded three wonderful solo albums, and most recently The New Pornographers' latest album Continue as a Guest was released on Merge Records, and like everything else they've done, it is just delightful!
I'm on Twitter here and you can get the show with:

Why do you think Ally just forget about grant and jonas after cmh (haha sorry maybe I was just bitter that like Cammie, I felt like when they appeared in UWS again, it was an alternate universe where zach had friends :D)
It was an alternate universe. Zach had to invent multidimensional travel to grab a new Grant and Jonas so he looked like he actually had friends besides the girls
I genuinely do not know and it could have to do with Cammie herself.
Like sure Camster isn't that thickheaded (okay just a lot but it protects her from the head trauma) but Cammie didn't really focus on Grant and Jonas mostly because she was busy dealing with spy-pigtail-puller Zachary Goode (he's such an annoyance I love him)
We only ever hear about Grant and Jonas in very small hiccups of information like idk Grant being hot and Liz talking about Jonas and Grant being hot and someone vaguely mentioning Jonas' name and Grant being hot (you get the point, he's a sexy lamp)
They might've had a bigger role in drafts but that would've also either taken away from Zammie or had a higher page count than what Ally was aiming for
There could've been a whole deleted scene of Cammie thinking she fell through the multiverse and crash landed on a planet where Rebecca Baxter didn't know how to talk to a boy or even a small Liz and Cammie scene where Liz admits to liking the new, feeling a little bit like a normal girl when in truth she's never been anywhere near normal, even before she became a Gallagher Girl but something just feeling off
We'll never know honestly why Grant and Jonas fell if the face of the earth or why there weren't scenes of them in OTGSY helping Zach and the CPS infiltrate Blackthrone or even just getting more of the boys just being traumatized boys and not knowing how to wear ties right or Grant hating sleeves or Jonas being unused to so many layers and sweating a ton.

Meow!!  “The Catman of Paris” is on the Prowl on Imprint Blu-ray! From rags to riches, writer Charles Regnier pens one of the most popular and polarizing books of France.  Titled Fraudulent Justice, the subject matter coincidently contains secret court case information in it’s text.  Regnier stands firm his book is creative fiction while the French government think otherwise.  When a government…

Lee Vogt’s SONG OF THE WEEK: “Come Along Side of Me” https://leevogt.bandcamp.com/track/come-along-side-of-me  —Lee wrote, “When I heard that my first ‘deep’ girlfriend had died, that night I wrote this song. coming from that place in my heart that has never stopped loving her.”
Producer-musician Johnny J. Blair wrote, “This song is quietly compelling, reminding me of Dennis Wilson’s orchestral romance songs of the early 70s (think side 2 of the CARL & THE PASSIONS Beach Boys album). I’ve had a great time working with Lee, a singer-songwriter who dashes off biographical, heartfelt love songs influenced by the confessionals of Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman, Nilsson, and John Stewart. We recorded this one at Jim Helman’s studio in Berkeley CA.”

This is Castle Drachenfels (1992), which is maybe Flame Publications’ last Warhammer supplement. Or it is a weird interregnum publication by Games Workshop after Flame’s shuttering but before the Warhamer Fantasy Role Play license was handed off to Hogshead. Whatever the case, this is Carl Sargent’s adaptation of the castle as portrayed in the novel Drachenfels, by Kim Newman (using the pen name Jack Yeovil, 1989).
What you get is a history of the castle and its owner (the great enchanter Constant Drachenfels is a legendary, monstrous figure in the lore of the Old World), a detailed room-by-room description of the horrible place, scads of NPCs and several “adventure themes.” These last are interesting, in that they give motive to players to explore the castle while also acknowledging that the castle is largely unconquerable. No megadungeon is, but rarely are they so upfront about it.
Chatting to folks about this one has gotten some mixed opinions. It reminds me quite a bit of Jennell Jaquays Dark Tower or a less deserted version of Tomb of Horrors but with a sense of humor. That dark comedy seems to be the prime divider, as it is a bit zanier than what you find in the Old World up to this point — folks either love it or hate it. I fall in the love category. The castle is plenty horrible, it is nice to have what laughs you can squeeze out of the carnage. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a stone cold classic of the line, but it is nevertheless as fine an example of a large funhouse dungeon as you are likely to find.

Source (Season 1 - June 13th 2023)
contestabile: Hi everyone! Wanted to share some @ourflaghbomax insights after stumbling upon a fantastic Tumblr post by @mondfahrt (google it!). They captured the meaning and subtext perfectly, but here's a little extra. Mary's painting studio embraced a non-period-correct style inspired by Cubism, Expressionism, and American modernism. While the iconic lighthouse painting had already been established, we needed to fill the entire art studio/barn with similar styles quickly. To achieve that, we drew inspiration from the works of Georgia O'Keeffe and Carl Newman. Many artists contributed, but a special shoutout goes to @ozone_ue_skp for creating some incredible paintings. O'Keeffe-inspired close shots of flowers were “easily” rendered in the cubist/lighthouse style. Interestingly, we sourced rough sketches by Carl Newman, expanding and completing them in Mary's unique style. Multiple pieces were painted in different states of completion, reflecting progress throughout the episode. The set was a redress of the Warner Bros Jungle cabin, used in various productions from Dexter to Star Trek. It's interesting to see how it can transform to fit so many different atmospheres. I also must say it’s amazing to see the #ofmd community embracing the show and appreciating the attention to detail. As a follower myself, I'm grateful for the fans' passion. Although I didn't work on season 2 due to it being filmed in New Zealand, I'm eagerly anticipating it alongside all of you. Lastly, congratulations to the OFMD Art Department for their well-deserved @adgawards_official win earlier this year. It was an absolute honor to have been part of such a talented team. Mamie Van Doren
Mamie Van Doren (born Joan Lucille Olander; February 6, 1931) is an American actress, singer, and sex symbol. She is perhaps best known for the rock 'n' roll, juvenile delinquency exploitation film Untamed Youth (1957).
Van Doren was born on February 6, 1931, in Rowena, South Dakota, the daughter of Warner Carl Olander and Lucille Harriet Bennett. She is of three-quarters Swedish ancestry; the remainder is mixed English and German. In 1939, the family moved to Sioux City, Iowa, and then to Los Angeles during May 1942.
In early 1946, Van Doren began working as an usher at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. The following year, she had a bit part on an early television series. She sang with Ted Fio Rito's band and entered several beauty contests. At age 17, she eloped to Santa Barbara, California, with Jack Newman, but because of his abusive nature the marriage was quickly dissolved. In the summer of 1949, at age 18, she won the titles Miss Eight Ball and Miss Palm Springs. She was engaged to heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey, but broke the engagement upon signing a contract with Universal Studios.
Producer Howard Hughes discovered Van Doren when she was crowned Miss Palm Springs. The pair dated for several years. Hughes launched her career by placing her in several RKO films.
