The omnivorous coastal brown bear has approximately 42 teeth: large predatory teeth for shredding and molars for grinding. Female Grizzly bear known as Paula, looking at her pups that were left with us while mom was fishing. Today, the area where this beautiful momma grizzly bear was photographed Katmai National Park, one of the last truly wild places on the planet is under serious attack! 62 million salmon returned to this pristine crown jewel of America! But now our legislators have removed its protection and are trying to put one of the largest proposed gold and copper mines in the world there: Pebble Mine. “We interrupt your afternoon broadcast to bring you an update with the stand off occurring at Katmai National Park, Alaska. The National Park Service is reporting that the grizzly bears have taken control of the pontoon bridge that spans Brook River connecting the park lodge with the rest of the park this afternoon. “We always try to negotiate with the bears when it comes to traffic over the bridge’” said one park official, “but this year the bears have decided to completely take over the bridge and will not let anyone cross it!” The bears disagreed with that when we spoke with them, “we’ve always had a good relationship with NPS - but the traffic jams across the bridge have grown really bad over the years,” said he bear who identified himself as bear 472. “We’ve decided that we need to take control of the bridge ourselves and one of the ways we believe will control the crowds of photographers and on lookers is by charging toll - one salmon each way. We also have an Easy Pass with the state of Alaska too - we are sure it will work very well once you sign up” Negotiations between representatives of the the National Park Service and the grizzly bears continue at this moment. This sow bear is known as #854, or "Divot". She is one of the many Katmai Brown Bears that roam the land around Brooks Camp in the Katmai National Park & Preserve - western Alaska. I "met" Divot back in 2010 when she "pushed" us out of the Brooks River, thinking that we had a nice salmon for her. Last week, we were fortunate to come upon her and her cub while we were floating down the Naknek River. She paid us no attention as she caught and consumed several Sockeye Salmon, while the cub waited patiently on the bank. It didn't take long to notice the wire snare wrapped around and cutting into her neck. The snare didn't seem to bother her fishing, but we could see how it had peeled the hair from her neck. She fished successfully for about a half hour and the two then rambled up and over the ridge. The Park Service brought in a specialist who found, darted, removed the snare, and treated the wound. Her cub stayed close, fished and watched the whole process. Divot awoke and seemed on the road to recovery. This was a most excellent happening! Kudos to the Park Service!
