Атмосфера в самой локации у водопада не слишком оживленная, поэтому вы сможете более свободно наслаждаться свежестью природы. Вода, падающая с этого водопада, впадает в небольшую каменистую речку. Можно зайти в бассейн, поиграть в воде под плеск водопада.

Kedung Kayan Falls is a hidden gem located within Mount Merapi National Park. This very interesting tourist attraction is located on the border of Magelang and Boyolali districts, Central Java, Indonesia. Kedung Kayan Falls originates exclusively from a spring on Mount Merbabu, and is located at an altitude of approximately 1200 meters above sea level. Kedung Kayan Falls  has a height of about 40 meters, it is very powerful, the volume of water flow never decreases, even at the height of the dry season . To get to the waterfall, you will need to go down to the river bed and even cross it into a ford in one place. The beauty of this waterfall can be admired from different angles. Either from above, from the side or from the front.

The area around the waterfall itself has been developed in such a way as to become a tourist destination. There are several supporting facilities such as accommodation and campsites around. The atmosphere in the waterfall location itself is not too lively, so you can more freely enjoy the freshness of nature. The water falling from this waterfall flows into a small rocky river. You can go into the pool and play in the water while listening to the splash of the waterfall.

Developing S0-R0 (Sketches)

I just feel like drawing Kun3h0-likes lately, so I decided to work more on developing a "rival" character for her. Right now, I'm whittling away at this design that I'm calling "S0-R0" for the time being.

The 2 pics are the latest drawings, then I have the progress of getting to that point in chronological order. You can see the very first "rival" sketch in the last Misc doodle dump.

When I first went into this project, I didn't have any strong direction for where I wanted the character to go. Since Kun3h0 isn't fully developed as a character either, it was kinda hard to think of a foil to basically nothing. However, I did know that I at least wanted the rival's theme to be "stars" to contrast Kun3h0's hearts. So whatever I did was gonna drift towards sharpness.

The first chronological sketch is almost a straight inverse of Kun3h0's design in terms of palette. I wanted the silhouette of their arms and legs to be roughly similar so that it's more clear that they're supposed to be connected and not (just) that I have a limited amount of body-plans that I default to. I do like the black/green color scheme, but they've got a real "XBox" and "Monster Energy" vibe to them.

The outfit itself was heavily based on these clothes, just to give me a little direction, but the current design really drifted away from this.

(I added spinning bulborb just so the clothes wouldn't stretch out the post too much)

I also borrowed an old idea from my "Digital Idol Kayane" design, where she had some of her elements floating around. I figured since Kun3h0's ears/antenna just kinda "float" that I could apply the same logic to the whiskers. That detail would persist through most iterations of the design, but I eventually dropped them.

But, I was still pretty unhappy with that design, so I made another sketch and started working around it. The first iteration was mostly a palette swap to get away from Monster Energy, so I went with cyan since it's a kinda futuristic color that I thought would go great with the black base. Eventually it evolved into the second iteration where I went back to giving them the pants of the very first rival sketch and working from there. I'm not quite sure where the idea for the spikes came from. I think I just wanted to add some more "sharpness" to really work in the star motif, but then that kinda became the "main" motif beyond the stars.

I thought the black/cyan/red color scheme was really cool, but it kinda works against my established symbology where stars are yellow and moons are blue. In the event that I design a moon-motif character in the GAB universe, it would be odd for them to now not be able to use blue because the star-motif character got to it first. So, I did another palette swap, this time exchanging cyan for yellow and gold.

While I was working on that, I also got the idea to design their mascot to help with the design process. Since Kun3h0 was originally based on GAB, I thought that it might help me come up with ideas to solidify the mascot design first and that would help me design the rival proper. So, I made this little fox fella and have been designing S0-R0 around them since. I made several other palettes for the mascot, but in the end I went with my first design.

Finally, I took another stab at the outfit and landed on this minidress and made the collar comically large. I really liked the idea of this slim body being covered in large, overbearing spikes. I also took out more of the red accenting since I wanted to limit their palette as much as Kun3h0's, which is a neutral + 2 shades of the same color + a pop of one other color for small details.

It's not perfect yet, but I do like this direction. I went with this for some rough characterization: While GAB sought out someone with a strong heart to help them, FOX (name not final) sought someone with physical strength. Unlike Kun3h0 who is more emotional than a robot ought to be, S0-R0 tries to complete tasks as efficiently as possible, which leads to them using physical force to address most of their problems. They're not evil per se, they just don't consider the greater ramifications of their actions if they still ultimately complete their original task.

I haven't drawn it yet, but I think their weapon would be a morning star/flail.

Chukina Santu Word of the Day #4!

Yeah I'm back at it with this. If you don't know, Chukina Santu is a conlang I'm developing with the goal of being easy to learn and equally easy for everyone to learn, regardless of their first language.

Today's word:

Kipu

content word

As noun: sewing needle, compass, pointer, arrow, guide, leader

As verb: to lead, to guide, to sew

Once again, one of the key aspects of Santu is that the vocabulary words are very broad, but still capable of expressing specific ideas. Here, the ideas that tie it together is the notion of something that comes before other things and defines their path. It could be a political leader, kipu chupu, or a mentor, kipu tuntun, or not a person at all, and in that case usually something pointy. A needle that guides thread through cloth, or a needle that guides a weary traveler home by telling her which direction north is, or even just an arrow (particularly a guiding arrow, not necessarily the weapon).

Kipu is also used as a modifier on directional words to indicate that they are compass directions. Yupa on its own can mean both "right" and "East", but yupa kintu ("needle-right") can only mean "East".

I am aware that not all cultures consider north to be up, so I hesitated to make it so in Santu. Historically, East has been the most common "up" or "forward", followed by West and South, with North dead last. The Aztec sun god Huītzilōpōchtli for example has a name that could either be translated as "Hummingbird's South" or "Hummingbird's Left", illustrating that the Aztecs thought of West as the "first" direction. Another example could be that the Mandarin word for compass, 指南針 (zhǐnánzhēn) literally means "south-pointing needle".

That being said, these perspectives have come to be subsumed under the relatively late Western idea that North is up, and while this displeases me, it also makes it the obvious choice for analogous directions. Today, the vast majority of humanity mainly thinks of North as up, and of the ones who don't most are familiar with the framework.

That being said, today's example of Santu text will be my complete translation of Aesop's The North Wind and the Sun, or as you might also translate the name in Santu, The High Wind and the Sun. I hope you enjoy.

Susa Kintu, Yata

Yaku ki Susa Kintu ki Yata. Yaya ki kan tuya na chayu chu nu piku chan. Tutu ki ki tutu chu nu na yama na chaka supa. Tuntun ki kan tuya: kin nu piku ki kayan na nu muni ki ki tutu na chaka kan, kin nu piku chan ki kayan sayu. A literal translation back into English:

The North Wind and the Sun were in conflict. The two wondered who was stronger. A traveler came, hugged by a thick garment. The two felt: if one compelled the traveler to surrender their garment, then that one was stronger. At this, the North Wind blew with rare power, but when the Wind blew like a storm, then the traveler hugged their garment harder; the North Wind surrendered. At this, the Sun shined warmly, which caused the traveler to quickly remove their garment. With this, the North Wind was compelled to say that the Sun was stronger.

“I just need a hug”

Lucifer was exhausted. His siblings seemed to lack respect for him more and more and the aura of authority that he used to have was fading like the days between his fingers. Focused on the tasks that Diavolo demands of him, Lucifer showed no signs of fatigue, an attitude that made Diavolo praise him when they got together to chat and have tea that Barbatos very kindly offered them.

“I see you finished with the last paperwork, get some rest Lucifer. You deserve it"

That was the only and last thing he wanted to hear. An emptiness engulfs Lucifer like the mist that decorates the Devildom in the early hours of the morning. He knows what it is to enjoy free time and it is not something that he likes very much. He spends his moments alone with his thoughts and that is not the best thing that can happen to him. With the presence of his brothers, a similar image develops, simply that many thoughts are eaten up by the hubbub that never ceases.

His mind was spinning, the memories of the past never leave him alone, they just accumulate like diavolo's paperwork. However, he no longer has paperwork that occupies his mind and the hubbub is not serving as much as before because exam time is approaching and each of his siblings is withdrawn in their respective rooms studying. Lucifer could do the same, being the tutor of mammon or beel but satan has already taken them away and is helping them with the pre-exam preparation.

Lucifer is again surrounded by his silence and his eyes blur on what is in front of him, losing himself in a mist of negativity that little by little drags him to a shore in the neverending lake that he thought he had before his complete doom. He always thought he was going to end up like this. Always collected, the older brother served all these years as the protector of his younger siblings but no one was there to protect him from himself. While he prevented adversity from getting the best of them, no one sat down to think what Lucifer really thought or felt, nor is it that he gives a chance to all those who have the least intention of holding his hand, helping him and to be able to recover that demon who used to enjoy game nights at the devildom.

Mammon is more protected, for obvious reasons. Lucifer hurts many times when he calls him scum, waste of oxygen, or other names. It is something that always bothers him but at the same time, it has hardened his pain for the sake of his own brother. He saw that little by little mammon was getting out of his usual debt with the witches and was recovering the lost money ... in addition to the bets, but what mattered was that he no longer had losing on his side. He also saw how his grades went up when they studied together. No matter what an immense headache the second-oldest gave him, mammon's predisposition was reward enough for him.

But now Mammon prefers to study with Satan and Lucifer places his head in his hands and asks himself, what happened in between? Alone, without anyone's help, those ruby eyes fill with tears and in the silence and solitude of his room, after thousands of years living alone with his bottled up feelings, Lucifer lets himself cry.

One tear follows the other and slowly his breathing becomes more agitated than usual, he begins to take deep breaths of air, unable to breathe, feeling that his throat closes and chokes are the only noise he knows at that moment.

However, Lucifer never realized you were watching him from his ajar door. Your eyes filled with tears when you saw who you loved the most was being consumed by the darkness. You have no idea what he has gone through and it is not important either because before calculating other indications of the state of your beloved, you ran to kneel in front of him and softly called his name.

As a defense mechanism, the demon opens and spreads his wings, eyes shining like two rubies in the light of a wisp. Many people would be afraid of it, but you can see that his wings are shaking, his shoulders are tense and his jaw is clenched tight enough to break his teeth. His lips are quivering but still, Lucifer tries his best to maintain that facade of an older brother, responsible and without feelings as it was before you had the pleasure of knowing him as much as you do now.

Seeing you in front of him with tears in your eyes and a clear and evident tone of concern in your voice, his inner Lucifer is seen more and more away from the shore to which he was so close before. A greater force drew him to the light, to the opposite shore where once there, he cried as he had never done before. On the outside, he kept his facade, while his mind remembered all the times you were for him in the same way that he was for his brothers.

“I saw that you passed the RAD exams, well there Lucifer. That makes me very happy, congratulations." It was the first round of exams at RAD and you studied with him and Mammon. As deserved, you bought him a record that he was eager to buy. ‘I’m proud,’ said the wrapper.

"I heard that Mammon doesn't go to the casino that much and he told me you helped him" your arms hugged his waist and he imitated the gesture. With your head on his chest, Lucifer feels his heart beating faster than usual with the happiness that someone recognizes his hard work.

"You know I'm here for you right?" One unfortunate day, Lucifer overflows and takes the demon form out of as frustration consumes him. You had placed your hand delicately on his shoulder blade and did not even have the luxury of flinch when he abruptly pulled your hand away. However, those words continue to resonate to this day.

“You are not alone in this Luci. Speak to me ”your voice was soft, there were no longer traces of concern in it and that is when his gaze deigns to make contact with yours. The cold he feels is enormous, it freezes all his muscles and he feels stupid.

He feels even worse for not having noticed that you were always there to help him no matter what his siblings tell you every time you decide to give him a hand. Dejected by his own feelings, the pride that always made him position himself on a pedestal unattainable by all gradually crumbles into a pile of rubble on which a sore Lucifer stands. Vulnerable, hurt, in love and in need, his voice is weak, barely a whisper, but you still hear the way his pain translates into a simple-

“I just need a hug”

With one last choked sob, you sit on Lucifer's lap and wrap your arms around his back. Head down, the morning star that gradually lost its shine, is regaining it by the way he embraces you back. Kissing him on the temple, you let him continue to cry, let him vent into your arms. The burden that he has on him was and is a lot even for a demon like him. Surrounded by silence and the embrace of each other, Lucifer understands that he was blinded by his own internalized hatred and other problems to see that the solution to everything was in his arms.

His reason for living was in his arms.

Saving Cultures in Karenni

Mou Mi, 53, is one of roughly 70 Kayan women known as the “long-necked people” who wear bronze neck rings, a disappearing tradition among the ethnic group in Karenni State.

The way of life for people in her village and nearby Kayan villages in Demoso Township has been the same for generations: farming, breeding animals, hand-weaving clothes, and crafting bamboo household wares. In the last two years, however, their village has become more known to outsiders, since the introduction of community-based tourism.

With distinctive cultures and untouched scenery, Karenni State has attracted thousands of foreign tourists and even more domestic visitors since the previous government opened access to the area in 2013. The decision came months after its biggest ethnic armed group, the Karenni National Progressive Party, signed a ceasefire agreement with the government.

Over the last three decades, many residents of Karenni—the smallest state in Myanmar, with a population of about 290,000, according to the 2014 census, but also host to at least eight ethnic armed groups—fled for the Thai border because of fighting between the Myanmar Army and ethnic armed groups.

About half of Karenni State’s ethnicities, including Kayah, Kayaw, Kayan, and Manu Manaw, are staying in Thailand’s refugee camps. Mou Mi said some of her friends went to the camps, but she remained in her village. The oldest ethnic villagers hold on to their traditional way of life.

Losing Traditions

Like every girl in Banzan village of Pan Pet village tract, Mou Mi began wearing four bronze coils on her neck when she was little. Even though it was initially painful, “it was shameful at that time if we didn’t wear them,” she said through a translator, as she spun yarn.

But she does not force her daughters to wear the neck rings as her mother did to her.“My daughters don’t want to put these on all the time, so I don’t make them,” said the mother of eight children.

Those accustomed to the heavy neck rings understand how burdensome they would be to wear—one of the reasons why the custom has faded among the younger generation that has not embraced the custom. Traditional attire of other ethnicities such as the Kayah and Kayaw in Karenni has also faded.

Only a handful of young women don the bronze coils now. One of them, a 20-year-old clothes peddler named Mou Tar who returned from Thailand to live with her family three months ago, sells hand-woven scarves as souvenirs at her home-cum-shop.

Mou Thu, 47, returned from Thailand in April 2016 and also began selling scarves from her home. Visitors can also preorder local food and enjoy the music of her family band.

She lived in Thailand’s Kayan villages for nine years after leaving on the advice that she could earn more money there.

Kayan villages receive support in Thailand, with residents given a regular salary and taught vocational skills, but Myanmar offers no such support—not even an awareness drive in order to preserve the traditions. The villages in Thailand, however, are often referred to as “human zoos,” as visitors pay an entrance fee to see the Kayan people.

“For our people, the ethnic Kayan, survival matters more than being labeled as a human zoo,” said Khun Lakwui, a community guide who was in a Thai refugee camp for almost a decade, then resettled in the United States for five years before returning to the village of his childhood last year.

“I want the Myanmar government to put effort in to bringing back the ethnic Kayan, or ‘long-necked people,’ from Thailand,” said Khun Lakwui.

An estimated 11,000 Karenni refugees live in at least two camps in Thailand’s Mae Hong Song district since fleeing their homes because of conflict between ethnic armed groups and the Myanmar Army in 1989. About 12,000 Karenni have resettled to third countries, mainly to the United States.

Community Fund

Tourists who want to explore the traditional ways of life of Karenni State’s various communities can contact the area’s community-based tourism coordinators.

Launched in early 2016 and supported by The Netherlands Trust Fund, the tourism project creates job opportunities and income for locals, according to the tour guides based in the state capital Loikaw. The fund provided trainings to the local community on how to prepare food for the foreigners and on basic hygiene, but the project ended in June this year, according to U Htay Aung, the chairman of the state’s tour guide association.

The guides introduce the visitors to community elders, translating the language from the local dialects and vice versa. The guides also contribute 10 percent of their fees to the village funds, which are used for the development of the community.

“Our villagers, especially young people, have gotten jobs because of the project. In 2016 we got many visitors,” said Khu Tee Reh, the village elder from Tanelale village, where many Kayah live, and the patron of the tourism project.

“They can also earn income from cooking traditional food,” he added, explaining that the visitors can sample the local dishes.

It encourages locals to promote their traditions, he said, as foreigners want to learn about their culture.

Khun Lakwui said using community guides is the best way to contribute to the villages.

“Before there was a rule that visitors must hire community guides, but now some people hire them and some don’t, because some regional guides or national guides know the places and they just bring the visitors to the community for show,” he said.

Myanmar’s government must support the communities, he said, to help them not only survive but also preserve their traditions.

“They do not earn any income by living here, but they could have incomes while staying in Thai villages, so it must be hard for them to decide [to stay]. They need the government’s support to be able to come back,” he said.

There is no entrance fee for the Kayan villages in Myanmar. The community-based tour guides said their approach is needed for development.

“We want sustainable tourism. If many visitors arrive, we are afraid that it might damage the community,” said U Htay Aung, the chairman of the Karenni State tour guides association. “We, the guides, the hoteliers, and the villagers all have to work together to preserve this tradition, which would support sustainable tourism,” he said.

Challenges in Protecting Culture

The bid to preserve the cultures of Karenni’s ethnicities has had a modest start, according to Khu Peh Nyoe Reh, the secretary of the Kayah National Literature and Culture Committee (KNLCC) in Loikaw.

“In this changing era, our traditions are becoming extinct as many tend not to wear the traditional dress. But we are trying to preserve it, especially the old styles, which use hand-woven clothes.”

Traditional craftsmen in Loikaw who make pieces such as silver earrings, decorated silver swords, and necklaces all used as accessories in the traditional dress are also dwindling, he said.

“In ancient clothing, we have lacquered cotton leg rings, the turbans, and earrings in addition to clothes, but now these accessories are becoming rare and we have lost the experts who craft these,” Khu Peh Nyoe Reh added.

Resource Shortages

Locals not only face the loss of crafting skills, but also a shrinking market for raw cotton to use for hand-woven cloth and bamboo household items.

“We have neither the market, the technology nor the higher quality cotton product,” the KNLCC secretary said, adding there are few small-scale cotton plantations in the region compared to the past.

Kyar La Pya, the husband of the scarf seller, Mou Mi, grows some cotton plants in their field to use for clothes and scarves at home. He is also one of the village’s last makers of lacquered bamboo kitchenware, which includes baskets, cups and circular trays used to serve meals.

The cups are used for drinking khawn—local millet wine—and the trays—daunglan in Myanmar and deeyapwelone in Karenni—were once a common sight in households.

The villages also lack access to underground water and households must save rainwater in large bowls for annual use.

“We have to be thrifty using water and when it runs out in the summer, we have to go to further to fetch it,” said one woman in the Pan Pet village tract. The locals added that they got access to electricity for the first time a month ago and that a new road leads to the community.

“From March to May, we have a shortage of water—especially when we have visitors who want to enjoy the local food,” said Khu Tee Reh from Tanelale village.

Artists’ Statement

In a few years, the San Francisco Chinatown we know may not exist anymore.

Even before the pandemic, Chinatown had many empty storefronts while hungry developers waited close by. Tenants were vulnerable to displacement due to lack of protection and economic instability. The pandemic also escalated the dehumanization of our AAPI communities through racist scrapgoating.

Our poster series highlights the stories of Chinatown’s mothers, workers and tenants. The comics foreground the themes of love, community, survival, and resistance.

Having our community members’ stories visible and centered through Market Street’s kiosks is a part of ensuring the Chinatown we call home will survive in post-pandemic San Francisco.
