Ranking Keira Knightley movies I've seen
Found this ranking I made of Keira Knightley movies in one of my old notebooks and had to share with the world this new year's eve (worth noting that some of them like Imitation Game and Anna Karenina weren't originally on the list, so I added them tonight)
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - Keira Knightley is not in it enough. when she is, she's indistinguishable from Natalie Portman. 1/10
Princess of Thieves - baby Keira Knightley chops off all her hair and makes me bisexual. is a cutie with a reasonable amount of chemistry with the charming love interest. wins over grouchy dad by saving england and being good at archery. 8/10
King Arthur - Keira's acting is great but i don't think the writers knew what to do with her. i do love her costumes though. 5/10
Never Let Me Go - i barely remember anything about this movie. book was probably better. -1/10
Atonement - OMG!!! the PASSION. the YEARNING. this is the first tragic WWII romance i ever experienced and it DELIVERS. mostly though it's the green dress. the one she's wearing when she has sex with the faun from the narnia movies. that green dress belongs in Titanic or something illustrious. i don't think this movie's appreciated enough. i think it's time for a rewatch. 12/10
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms - little known (no one but my mom and i ever saw it) but holy SHIT is the world missing out. Keira puts on this high-pitched voice as the EVIL SUGAR PLUM FAIRY in a giant tuto. she is by far the best thing about the movie which unfortunately is lackluster in every way. 6/10 and all 6 are for her
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World - this movie should not be allowed to be so darn cute when it's about the literal apocalypse but it is and Keira is cute in it. she gets to go on a roadtrip with Steve Carrell in hopes of seeing her parents again before a giant meteor hits the earth and kills everyone. has a surprisingly touching ending. 8/10
Begin Again - i like anything where Keira sings. she's also a good role model for mark ruffalo's daughter in this. not my favorite John Carnye movie (that would be Sing Street which came out three years later) but definitely watchable. 7/10
Love Actually - why didn't they let Keira do anything in this movie? -2/10
Imitation Game - more tragic WWII stuff, though not as gutting as Atonement. Keira gets a turn playing the normal (albeit v. smart) person playing opposite Benedict Cumberbatch being weird. she does just as good a job as Martin Freeman while being way hotter. (also helps that the movie is better written than Sherlock.) her story isn't the tragic part and i'm not going to make jokes about Alan Turing who deserved much better than he got. 7/10
Anna Karenina - despite plalying the character whose name is the title, Keira was not in this enough. costumes were good but movie was approximately 1000 years long. still haven't forgiven my college boyfriend for making me watch it. -5/10
Pride & Prejudice - not my favorite Austen adaptation but you can't say Keira's not having the time of her life. she's a little giggly -- Elizabeth is more dry -- but she's definitely pretty and does a good job with the material given. Rosamund Pike may be the only person as good as her. 6/10
Bend It Like Beckham - the movie that launched a thousand lesbians. Keira gets put on the map as a tiny cute blond tomboyish lesbian soccer (ahem, *football*) player. she's a treat. 10/10
Pirates of the Caribbean - THE Keira Knightley movies. the dresses? check. the sword fighting? check. Pirate King with men falling at her feet? check, check, and check. best thing about the triology. got to kiss three dudes (sao feng doesn't count), gives a rousing third act speech, and gets to be the character who got the "keeps removing weapons from more and more illogical places on her person" trope. plus she sings! (a little.) disney did not deserve her and neither did any man in those movies. (orlando came closest though) 10 million/10

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
The film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms most closely resembles is Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Like it, this reinvention of the classic story overrelies on CGI effects, seems more concerned with creating a flashy-looking world than a working one, and throws its empty characters into a floppy storyline. Unlike the 2010 movie, this bad holiday pudding by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston has no chance of being fondly remembered, even by misguided fans. It’s so derivative of other works it fades from your memory as soon as the credits roll.
On Christmas Eve, Clara Stahlbaum (Mackenzie Foy) searches for a key that will open a music box left to her by her late mother. On its trail, she wanders into a magical world divided into four realms. All live in harmony, except for Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren) and her army of mice, who rule the realm formerly known as the land of Amusements. Along with Captain Philip Hoffman (Jayden Fowora-Knight, playing the titular Nutcracker… sort of), Clara sets out to find her key and restore order to the realm her mother discovered years ago.
It’s essentially a watered-down version of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” minus the wonder, excitement or anything else that made it good. The residents of the four realms are ridiculous caricatures rather than living, breathing beings we should care about. The Land of Amusements is barren. There’s just a couple of “buildings”, which is supposed to be spooky - I think. Mother Ginger’s army of mice should fill us with terror but the rodents can barely come together to make one human-sized soldier, much less pose a threat. What do the realms need a savior from, again?
If I talk about a film’s running time, it’s usually because someone's overstaying their welcome. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms has the opposite problem. It’s way too short. By the time we're introduced to the major players, the world, the rules and the conflict, there’s no time for anything else. No one has any depth. The movie is about nothing more than Clara finding the key to her music box and stopping the threat during the final act. You don’t get to know her or the Nutcracker at all so it’s no surprise the two of them don’t get romantically engaged by the time the movie ends. They’re blocks of wood no one could get excited about.
There’s nothing for you to get invested in or fall in love with. Fan of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite? There are a couple of brief dance sequences but before you get into it, writer Ashleigh Powell whisks away to witness another barrage of fantasy story cliches. Keira Knightley’s Sugar Plum Fairy is revealed to be the villain all long. Even if you didn’t see it coming, you won’t be shocked. Let her take over the world with her army of toy soldiers (so weak and impotent they make the Battle Droids from the Star Wars prequel trilogy look terrifying). Maybe then, something interesting will happen.
You could make a long list of everything about The Nutcracker and the Four Realms that feels off (Matthew Macfadyen is creepy and I don’t think he’s supposed to be) or doesn’t make sense but why bother? Even if the impressive visuals could make you overlook all of the flaws, no one would ever hold it close to their heart and call it a favourite. It’s dull and empty; as though it wasn’t even spawned by a committee or focus group, but by a machine. (December 27, 2019)

Theatergender
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A gender based around dramatic/theatrical aesthetics and/or activities. People who identify as theatergender may identify with musicals, screenwrites, and/or performing on stage in general. Of course, nobody needs to identify with those things to identify as theatergender and all genders are valid!

also may i be so bold as to ask for makeup advice? im getting my makeup done on valentine's day and i have a lot of ideas as to what i should go for but i want your thoughts
valentine’s day is EASILY one of my favorite holidays so here are some concepts for your perusal:
the golden goddess: think elizabeth taylor in cleopatra. gold lip gloss, gold eyeshadow, and the kind of winged eyeliner that brooks no argument. you can substitute green or teal eyeshadow if the gold is a bit much, but if you can get your hands on some gold highlighter then go ahead and bathe in that shit (i used to contour with crushed pyrite for this exact purpose)
the sugarplum fairy: yes, like keira knightley in that movie! lilac and silver eyeshadow with sparkly mascara if you can find it! pretty mauve lipstick under diamond lip gloss! as much diamond highlighter as your heart desires! basically if it sparkles, put it! on! your face!
the 70s singer-songwriter: think sharon tate. simple smooth face with soft brows, baby blue eyeshadow, nude lipstick, and lots of mascara (you can add a little bit of brown eyeliner pencil as you please)
the 90s teen movie: think cher horowitz from clueless! barbie pink lipstick (like her lip pencil!), some soft eyeliner pencil, and soft romantic neutral eyeshadow with pearly highlights
the old hollywood vamp: think black and white silent film star. thick eyeliner pencil with heavy smoky eyeshadow and the darkest red lipstick you can find. take some desaturated photos looking utterly bored with the decadent pleasures this life has to offer.
the marilyn monroe: think this milton greene photo that i’m obsessed with. bright complexion, winged eyeliner, this red lipstick, and fuck it, do the beauty mark!
the trophy girlfriend on a yacht in monaco: think everything amal clooney wears on vacation. mascara and a bit of liner for the biggest eyes possible, orange lipstick (trust me, i promise) and just a touch of warm blush for sunkissed skin. then go watch the formula 1 documentary series on netflix and tell me which driver you think is cutest (personally i think it’s carlos sainz)
the eat heart of man like egg for breakfast: think if eva green was in atomic blonde. sharp brows, jewel toned eyeshadow, berry lipstick, and the most aggressive winged eyeliner you ever did see. get graphic, get dramatic, get experimental! our goals here are FEAR, AWE, and ROCK AND ROLL

When I made my list of the Top 10 Gayest Barbie Movies, I noticed something about color-schemes in those movies and I did mention it briefly. Now, I took a closer look at it and wanted to bring it up again.
First of all, lesbian!Barbie. I just find it highly peculiar that if Barbie has an “ultimate form” and it’s not pure pink-on-pink, for some curious reason, they like to go orange-on-pink and even with a dash of white.
Tumblr media
(shown: Merliah from A Mermaid Tale 2, Mariposa from Mariposa 2 and Liana from Diamond Castle)
I mean, you’re very welcome to headcanon her as bisexual because you also ship her with Ken, but like honestly I just watched 36 Barbie movies and there were like maybe three where Ken and Barbie were a couple and yeah personally I don’t need it and I love that the ultimate princess, the ultimate fairy and the ultimate mermaid forms of Barbie all feature her in lesbian colors, so I’m very much down for lesbian!Barbie.
And, well, as you can see three out of 36 is not that much and while it did speak to me as a lesbian, what stood out far more was the fact that all the female love-interests - the female characters I found were actually shipable with Barbie’s character - were all decked out in bisexual colors.
It’s fascinating that they only get a darker pink, much purple, blue and in some cases even combinations of two or all three of them - it’s almost like green, red, orange, yellow, white, black, brown and all the shades those come in don’t really exist. Sure, if Barbie is in a trio of friends, they’re usually featuring these three colors plus green. But somehow, Barbie movies are not too hot on red or yellow and rarely use orange.
Now, those characters I find shipable with Barbie are usualy her love-rival-turned-new-best-friend, her already very close best friend, the helpful new person to aid her during a quest who then ends up becoming her friend.
And I just, I find it fascinating that I can arrange all the characters I ship with Barbie in... a bisexual flag. I mean, seriously, there are more than those three colors and the fact that they always seem to gravitate back to those, particularly in combinations with each other, is very striking to me.
Tumblr media
(pink: Xylie from Mermaid Tale, Sal-Lee from Star Light Adventure, Keira from Princess and the Popstar, Rayna from Mariposa, Catherine from A Christmas Carol, purple: Alice from A Fashion Fairytale, Hailey from The Pink Shoes, Luciana from The Island Princess, Raquelle from A Fairy Secret, Alexa from Diamond Castle, Kylie from Mermaid Tale 2, Catania from Mariposa 2, blue: Isla from Dolphin Magic, Kayla from A Mermaid Tale, Erika from Rock ‘n Royals, Erika from Princess and the Pauper, Rayla from Mariposa, Nori from Fairytopia 2: Mermaidia)
And look, I’m not saying Barbie has a gay agenda, but I’m definitely saying Barbie is a lesbian and she has a type - gorgeous, loyal bisexuals who are willing to help her save the day.
There’s... no point to this post. I just, after the post, got curious to see if I was only imagining that so I looked every single Barbie movie up again to check the color-schemes of the potential female love-interests and then I really wanted to arrange them as a bi-flag. I figured someone else may also find this delightful, so why not post it.
TL;DR: Barbie and her girlfriends said gay rights!

Which are your all time favourite stories / characters and why??
You are so sweet to send me this! I write about 6 paragraphs in my head to the last ask you sent every day about my OC's and then when I sit down to actually write it at my laptop I... don't. So this one I will answer right away!
Tumblr media
How do I choose between all my fictional children . . . I suppose the overarching umbrella I love the most would be fantasy! Having wings or magical powers, fairy dimensions or enchanted castles -- we don't have those reality, so it's lovely to escape to! One reason I love CGI's development is that every day it gets more and more advanced and we really feel like we're there!
Tumblr media
I grew up immersed in a "nerdy/geeky" world because of my dad. His whole house is mar.vel, d.c, star tr.ek and star war.s, with comics everywhere and lots of movie statues! (now he's in an airplane phase... there's no space in this house...) Was I brainwashed from an early age? It's funny because while people are very die hard "THIS company, ride or die, I hate the competition" my dad loves them all, so I grew up in a very neutral household. I love D.C. and M.arvel, Star Tr.ek and Star Wa.rs and... even some really aged tv shows like The Flas.h from the 80's or Won.der Woman with Lynda Carter because they are fun, goofy and contain the "pure heart" aspect of heroines and heroes (without all the angst of these modern dramas). Was I brainwashed from an early age?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first Harr.y Potter movie came out when I was a child and I devoured the series as I grew and more books/movies were released. Although it certainly has its problems (most of which I feel like come with J.K.'s "after facts") I learned so much from the characters and world. It's corny... but sometimes I had those books when I had no one else. They inspired me to become a writer and an actress. I remember thinking: how can I escape into these places like a Triwiz.ard Tourn.ament? Or a quiddi.tch game? I'd have to be an actress and get on set! There's still FB.AWTFT movies coming out... my time to shine is AT HAND . . . I also admire Emma SO MUCH and really look up to her as a person and an actress. The third movie and third book are my favorite. The spine of POA is completely broken and a whole chunk of the book comes out.
Tumblr media
I am a huge Disn.ey fan as a side branch of my love for fantasy. Everyone in my life knows this, but as I'm older now and more educated I've learned to take all the movies with a grain of salt, both past and present (Ok, but 2015 Ci.nderella might be the darn perfect exception). The Little Mermaid is my favorite (hence why I use her as my mun icons!) But I mean, she was sixteen and if she knew how to write why didn't she read the fine print in that contract?!
The Little Mermaid was huge for me. I knew all the words to the songs right away. I think it really inspired my love of fantasy (my fav creatures being mermaids and fairies). I think it also spawned my love of redhead characters like MJ Wat.son, Firestar, Jean Gr.ey, Kim Po.ssible, Natash.a Romanov and Thumbelina! Ariel shows how following your heart is a good thing, even if it's scary and takes you away from your comfort zone and safe people. Love can cross worlds so that a mermaid and human can be together! ROMANTIC AS HELL.
Tumblr media
Last but not least I must absolutely give a shout out to the REAL world by marking the Austen Era. Granted her works are non-fiction, but they take place in our world in a historic time of lovely flower printed dresses and ribbons! (I'm actually reading an Austen-esque book right now!) I definitely inherited my romantic 18th century whimsy from my mother (who was SEATHING that The Tenant Of Wilford Hall did not result in happy matrimony). Also in historical fiction: Doctor Zhivago! It is my favorite book and I am a SUCKER for the Keira adaptation for Masterpiece Theatre.
Tumblr media
To sum up, I love tall dark handsome broody boys mostly with brown eyes and shaggy hair (with a few exceptions), but I love strong female characters the most. Those like Gwe.n Stacy, Lizzie Benn.et, Sab.rina Spell.man or Elizabeth Swan.n who adapt, grow and stay true to themselves. Soft glitter heart girls like Sail.or Moon, Tohru H.onda and Catherine Mo.rland are just as important and loved!
Tumblr media
Childhood characters I grew up loving: the velveteen rabbit, the steadfast tin soldier, fairytale princesses and princes, chrysanthemum the mouse, the kissing hand raccoon, marshmallow the white fluffy bunny, Madeline, pooh & friends and peter rabbit.

7 Comfort Movies
Okie so as I’ve been tagged by @lastcallatrockysbar and @theychosefamily and @eyes-of-a-disney-princess, I should probably stop procrastinating and do this lol
1. Hello, Dolly!
Tumblr media
This role wasn’t written for Barbara Streisand, but it was soooo written for Barbara Streisand. She is the quintessential Dolly, and every second of this film, from costumes to sets to cinematography to acting, was spot-on. Plus, Louis Armstrong!
2. Lord of the Rings (trilogy)
Tumblr media
This counts as one film, yes it does. And we’re talking the extended editions, so it’s one 9-hour long marathon film. I put this on in the morning and watch it all day and I’m happy. And depending on the day, I’ll watch the whole thing with commentary, because the commentary tracks are literally the best thing ever.
3. The Duff
Tumblr media
There is nothing I don’t like about this movie. It’s fun, it’s awkward, Mae Whitman is a dryly sarcastic genius, and Robbie Amell is both hotter than the sun AND super funny. The movie took lots of liberties, but I actually like it better than the book. The book was dark and kinda mean and depressing, with a sort of ambiguous ending...the movie is pure wry fluff. Plus, Allison Janney!
4. High Society
Tumblr media
My favorite Golden Age Hollywood film. Grace Kelly’s final performance! Celeste Holm, everyone’s favorite Character Actress, being snarky and perfect! Music by Cole Porter! Costumes by Helen Rose! Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra do a duet about how much they fucking hate parties! Plus, MOAR Louis Armstrong!
5. If the Shoe Fits
Tumblr media
This movie is apparently so obscure nobody’s made a gif of it?? Which is a TRAVESTY because it’s SO GOOD! Rob Lowe and Jennifer Grey in a suuuuper 80′s retelling of Cinderella set in France. This movie has everything: eye-searing 80s fashion, a ditzy Fairy Godmother who wears guitar-shaped sunglasses, two terrible French aspiring-model roommates-cum-stepsisters... and at one point, Rob Lowe hiding under his desk in a silk robe picking at the carpet whilst his entourage watches like this 😬😬😬
6. Pride & Prejudice 1995
Tumblr media
Yes I know it’s technically a mini-series, but I don’t care. And I know some of you young ‘uns are all like oh but what about the the emo Keira Knightley version where nobody’s hair is ever curled correctly and everything’s dirty and Darcy confesses his love in the rain? NO. That is a garbage adaptation and a disgrace to its name and I WILL NOT STAND FOR IT.  2005 Lizzy Bennet twirling forlornly around on a swing whilst sad music plays in the background, are you fucking kidding me?? Austen is spinning in her grave! AUSTEN INVENTED THE ROMANTIC COMEDY, GOTDAMMIT! AUSTEN IS FUNNY! AUSTEN IS WRY! AUSTEN IS HAPPY! The woman never took anything seriously in her entire life, and then these grimdark motherfuckers go and vomit their Wuthering Heights aesthetic™ all over her masterpiece and...Okay, you know what? *deep breath* Never mind. This is the good adaptation. Watch this. Laugh. Ogle Colin Firth in a wet linen shirt. Enjoy.
7. The Princess Bride
Tumblr media
This film is a literal masterpiece. Every single line is quotable. Every character is memorable. It never gets less funny, or less moving, no matter how many times you watch it, which is INCONCEIVABLE!  It’s a stunning achievement, a modern story that has taken its place in the zeitgeist alongside classic fairy tales like Cinderella. Also, is the perfect movie to play when you’re sick; then you can pretend you’re baby!Fred Savage, and it’s your grandpa reading you a story!
tagging @paris-aflame @ja9toextremes @kayleighhalliday2203 @star-spangled-man-with-a-plan @captain-rogers-beard @absentlyabbie @miricastor and whoever hasn’t done it yet.

god now theyre just trying to mooch off of the princess and the pauper popularity again except thus time she doesn’t even get to be a character AND they’re still trying to make her a “quirky relateable teen” ://
My main problem with it so far is just that it’s Barbie herself, and so far they haven’t really done interesting things with her. And if they have (pretty much the whole entire canon pre-DA, and also Dolphin Magic), they’re never really referenced again, so what’s even the point? Why should I care about the plot if it’s never going to matter?
I don’t mind a switching plot. I really don’t! Pauper and Popstar are wildly different movies, not even accounting for the modern aspect. Like, Tori’s a brat who avoids responsibility, and Anneliese is a nerd who just wants, like, 1 day off. (And also to not marry a stranger.) Erika is dirt poor and wants to be a singer... Keira is already a singer, and a rich one at that, but she’s starting to crumble under the (seemingly self-imposed) pressure. They get a lot of mileage out of the same basic plot of “similar-looking princess and singer trade places.” If you wanted, you could even extend this to Rock N Royals, even tho Courtney and Erika aren’t doppelgangers, but RNR still manages to be different from Popstar even so. It just goes to show that the plot can be interesting if done correctly, and I think those 3 movies are great in their own rights. They shouldn’t be pit against each other just bc they plots are similar. Ppl don’t generally pit Rapunzel, Island Princess, Princess Charm School, and Pearl Princess against each other, even tho they ALL involve a lost princess. (So does Mermaid Tale, if you want to get technical.)
So, I don’t think the plot is inherently the problem. It’s more the fact of it being Barbie herself, who they keep trying to play as both a Normal Teenage Girl, and also Girl Who Has Whimsical Adventures. You can’t really be both. THAT’S the thing that bugs me the most.
Also, not to be controversial, but Pauper was released 16 years ago... I don’t think they’re really counting on it being ‘popular’ anymore, even if they still sell it. They’ve done a LOT with princesses, and pop stars/singers/muscisians, over the years, especially recently. One of the Dreamtopia lines, along with fairies and mermaids, is just princesses. One of the standard career dolls they release every year (at least for the last few) is a singer. It’s not really a stretch to put them in the same plot, since they’re both popular with little girls.

@catefrankie tagged me to list my top 11 comfort movies !! it took me a month but i’m doing it because i have recently come upon a time when i was in great need of comfort so here we go. also i HATE rewatching films, so movies on this list are incredibly special
1. mama mia
can’t express how much i love this film...colin firth, beautiful scenery, fun costumes, abba...the pure fluff the pure escapism....i could live here (also worth noting...mama mia: here we go again, all of the fun of the first mama mia, except now all three guys are hot and not just colin firth....i could also live here)
2. spirited away
OH to be whisked away by a smart and kind boy who will protect me and can also turn in to a dragon.....also the music
3. guernsey literary and potato peel society
we have had the conversation before that guernsey is just the wholesome version of mama mia....mama mia is for my wild and untamed escapism, guernsey for my soft, loving escapism
4. any muppet movie ever
the comfort......the humor...the sweet senseless camaraderie...the nostalgia...it doesn’t get any better. name one reason you would marry a kermit other than that he’s a frog
5. dr. horrible’s sing along blog
it’s a little overly nerdy and niche even for me but i imprinted on this when i was like 11 and won’t let go...it’s goofy and the songs absolutely SLAP. also, they used to shadowcast it at cons and it was always some of the best con memories i have
6. stardust
i’m highlighting this becuase it’s SO underrated and SO good...neil gaimen is such a wonderful storyteller, and charlie cox (while still responsible for some of the worst romantic decisions of my life) is my man. it’s a period piece and an adventure romp and it’s a FAIRY TALE and she’s a STAR and i won’t hear a word against this film i simply won’t
7. pirates of the caribbean: the black pearl
i have been watching this comfort movie for a decade, i won’t stop any time soon. my collection of things with will turner’s face on them slowly grows...my love for him never diminishes. it absolutely engages me everytime i watch it and even when it doesn’t i simply need to look at orlando bloom or keira nightly to be entertained long enough 2 continue
8. any MST3K specials

Get a behind-the-scenes look at Disney's Nutcracker and the Four Realms
Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet, based on an 1816 E.T.A. Hoffmann story, is as synonymous with the holidays as Santa Claus and candy canes. Now Disney has given it new life with The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a big-screen adaptation that centers on Clara’s adventures in an ornate palace and the fanciful lands that surround it. Producer Mark Gordon tells EW that bringing the experience of the ballet to a wider audience was very much a part of why he and Disney wanted to tell the story on movie screens. “It’s such a beloved holiday classic as far as the ballet is concerned,” he says, “and yet how many people have an opportunity to see the ballet?”
Taking inspiration from the worlds and music of the original story and the ballet, Four Realms blows things up to an eye-popping scale. “We did our own version of some of the different visuals that one has seen over the years in some of the classic ballet versions,” says Gordon, while production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas adds, “It was vitally important to try my hardest to fulfill everybody’s vision of what this world would be like if they really saw it outside of a ballet stage setting.”
Dyas says he didn’t want to design settings that were “aesthetically pleasing without any logical backbone,” so he built the world from the ground up and adhered to a strict historical cutoff at the year 1879. “I tried desperately to make a logic to this entire universe, so the 5-year-old me would believe this world,” he says. “I remember as a kid going to see a lot of films and not quite buying into some of these worlds because they weren’t built from the ground up as real societies.”
Constructing a world that would feel tactile and tangible to the audience meant building the majority of the sets and only filling in here and there with CGI. “This is not a green-screen movie,” Gordon says. “We actually built these sets. We wanted the audience to feel the reality and almost have a tactile experience, even though they’re not literally touching it. You can feel the difference between virtual sets and real sets.”
Disney gave EW an exclusive look at the magical four realms and the palace at the heart of it all. Take a look below for more on each of the enchanting sets.
THE PALACE
At the center of the movie is the palace, where the regents of all the realms convene. The castle set, which star Mackenzie Foy (Clara) calls “insane,” boasts a working portcullis and floor-to-ceiling tapestries. Both Gordon and Dyas cite a heavy Russian influence in the design. “[We] veered away from the more traditional fairy castles and chateaus we’ve seen in recent years,” says Dyas. “There’s a strong Russian historical context to The Nutcracker, so it was a very natural aesthetic to start studying architecturally. The child in me looked at some of those gorgeous Russian buildings with all their bright colors and onion-topped towers, and I realized very quickly what I was looking at were heaps of candy and flowers.”
The key to making the palace feel fantastical was to take the Russian historical architecture and add elements like highly saturated colors. “You’re not really sure, looking at some of these buildings, whether they are real palaces or toys in the imagination of a child,” Dyas says.
In the middle of the palace is the throne room, with four corners looking north, south, east, and west, to each of the different realms. As part of ensuring the logic of the world, Dyas assigned specific jobs and responsibilities to each realm.
LAND OF FLOWERS
In this agricultural home to farmers and beekeepers, Dyas turned to Dutch windmills and villages in the south of England to design his floral masterpieces. “There are windmills in the Land of Flowers, and they’re farmers, so there’s the production of flour and wheat, and all the primary functions of a society are done there. We took it seriously and adorned the sets with live flowers,” he notes. “It wasn’t about making the flowers look real; it was about getting the perfume in the air and allowing the performers to really feel the magic of what it must be like to be in a world of flowers.”
For Foy, the Land of Flowers presented a unique challenge to her allergies, but she was still blown away by the design. “There were real flowers on set. And they would have real fruits and vegetables,” she marvels. “It was crazy how much detail was in it. Between takes, I kept going and smelling them because they smelled so good.”
LAND OF SNOWFLAKES
For this realm of politicians, ice producers, and miners, Dyas took inspiration from a famous Swedish ice hotel and 16th-century German villages, transforming that architecture into layers of ice. “The most fun was coming up with their transportation system, which is primarily sleighs with deer,” Dyas recalls. Foy says that walking into elaborate sets like these felt just as magical for her as an actor as it was meant to feel for the character of Clara: “It was like you walked into a new world.”
LAND OF SWEETS
Inspired by the character of the Sugar Plum Fairy (played here by Keira Knightley), this land was built from real candy. “They had to put signs that said, ‘Don’t eat the candy,’” says Foy. “I’m like, ‘I want to eat it now that I know that it’s real!’” Dyas remembers the sets being irresistible temptations for younger members of the cast. “I won’t name names, but one of our younger cast, every time I turned up on set, his cheeks were filled like a hamster,” Dyas jokes. “A lot of [them] didn’t eat their lunch that day.”
Dyas had several inspirations for the brightly colored Land of Sweets, but he admits the first images to spring to mind were of the board game Candy Land. Luckily for Dyas and his strict historical accuracy, lots of contemporary candy has roots in the Victorian era. “Victorians at that time had immersed themselves in the most incredible candy invention you could ever have imagined,” he says. “Most of the candy and sweets that we know today stem from things developed at that time. Whether it be cotton candy or marzipan or refined nougat, chocolate cake, all these things.”
These various confections were employed with ingenuity to craft buildings with real chocolate tile roofs, walls of nougat, and stained-glass windows made of boiled sweets. They make surprisingly good building materials. “The walls of the building are made of nougat, and when you cut through nougat, you see all the nuts and cherries that are in there,” explains Dyas. “That looks wonderful on the sides of the building because it looks like this stonework.” Another key element of this realm was the heaps of steam coming from the buildings and the groups of background actors hard at work making candy to demonstrate that this is the “industrial revolution” portion of the world.
THE FOURTH REALM
Previously known as the Land of Amusements and ruled over by Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), the Fourth Realm is now a mysterious place, which the creative team will only describe as “creepy.” Gordon does hint that the majority of the story takes place in this realm. Foy adds, “It’s creepy trees and all that kind of stuff, and it was very big and it was beautiful. Those were very, very impressive sets.”
While Dyas won’t go into too much detail, he refers to the Fourth Realm as a “mysterious place” that denizens of the world have been afraid to visit for many years. Prior to becoming this strange place, Dyas says, it was the “fun fair and circus center of the world.”
Both Dyas and Foy note that it was home to some of their largest, most impressive sets, including one Dyas says was so “bizarre and wild” in architecture and silhouette that it attracted members of other productions shooting at London’s Pinewood Studios to ogle it.

Barbie: Princess and the Popstar REVIEW:
Hello everybody, my name is JoyofCrimeArt and I hate myself. Barbie.
Tumblr media
The Direct-to-DVD Barbie movies aren't something that I, and I assume many of you reading this, ever really thought about to much. They we're always that movie that you would see in the Wal-mart "five dollar" DVD racks. Or maybe you'd see a snip-it of one airing on Nickelodeon at like, twelve o'clock on a Sunday afternoon. Compared to, say, the direct-to-DVD Scooby-Doo movies the Barbie movies seem to be a lot less attention. Which is why it came to such a shock to me that there are SO MANY!  Thirty-six. As of the time of me writing this review there are thirty-six direct-to-DVD Barbie movies. And not only that, but they are divided into several different continuities and "seasons" as Wikipedia list it. The Barbie movies are a massive franchise! I just can't wait until their next film. Barbie: Infinity War. That one will make all the money!  So in order to honor such a long lasting franchise, I figured it was about time somebody gave Barbie the respect she deserves. The movie we're going to be talking about today, Barbie: Princess and the Popstar is the twenty-third entry in what I have titled the Barbie: Cinematic Universe. I had actually seen this one a couple of years ago on Nickelodeon. And it is, as of the writing of this review, the only Barbie movie that I have seen. Why did I choose to watch this movie oh so many years ago do you ask? Well, it was because of the title. Princess and the Popstar. Most Barbie movies have kinda dumb overly girly titles, but this one takes the cake. Princess and the Popstar! Somebody was PAID to come up with this!  And you wanna know the really crazy thing? This isn't even the first Barbie movie to be an adaptation of Mark Twain's "The Prince and the Pauper." There was another, I'm assuming more straight forward, adaptation in 2004. But I guess marketing decided that Mark Twain's classic novel just...didn't have enough pop stars to meet "Girls between the ages of 2-7" demographic.  But hey, maybe the film won't be so bad. I mean the film is directed by Zeke Norton, who directed both Scary Godmother films. And those films...exist. Anyway, no more stalling. Let's dive head first to Barbie: Princess and the Popstar.
Tumblr media
The movie begins with a pop concert. And honestly, I can't imagine it starting any other way.  Famous pop star Keira (voiced by Ashleigh Ball.) is preforming a music tour in the fictional kingdom of Meribella, in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the countries founding. We see her preform her set. We then cut away the kingdoms princess, Princess Tori (voiced by Kelly Sheridan.) standing outside her castle's balcony, listening to the event from a distance.  And if those voice actresses names sound at all familiar to you that's because our two heroines are voiced by Applejack and Starlight Shimmer, respectively, from My Little Pony.
Tumblr media
UGH! As if I didn't already have enough reason to hate Starlight Shimmer! ... Starlight Shimmer is the one that everybody hates, right?  Princess Tori wants to go down to the concert, but she is stopped by her Aunt, Dutchess Amelia. And I want you to guess, purely from her design, what her personality is.
Tumblr media
If you said, stuffy old authority figure who's too focused on tradition and doesn't get the joke, than congratulations! You can predict a Barbie movie!  Princess Tori wants to go to the concert, but her Aunt forbids it because Tori has to write and preform a speech for the kingdoms five hundredth anniversary event. And she hasn't even started writing it yet. But Princess Tori isn't one for all this "traditional, princess stuff." She's goofy, mischievous, and a bit of a prankster. She's just too much of a rebellious free spirit for all this noise. Like all princesses in animation she dreams of something more. She dreams of being able to live her own life, free from all the rules and restrictions that being royalty presents. But, y'know, she still wants all the riches and glamour. Cause hey, that shit is sweet!  Meanwhile, Keira is busy dealing with all of her pop star duties. She's headstrong, and a bit of a workaholic. She runs every part of her tour, from lighting, costumes, to TV broadcast all herself. She doesn't even let her manager, Seymour Crider, do any of the work and ignores all of his advice. Keira is under pressure from her record label to write a new album. She says she's working on it, but with all the workload of running the music tour she just isn't feeling very inspired. And Crider is the one who has to deal with all the heat from the higher ups. Keira is just tired of all the pressure from the studio, and wishes she could not have all the responsibility of being a pop star. But, y'know, she still wants all the riches and glamour. Because, as we previously stated, that shit is sweet!  I can relate with Keira. The constant stress of deadlines and work on other projects can make ANYBODY feel uninspired. Sometimes people will become so desperate that they'll be willing to do any half-ass project in order to to stay ahead of deadlines. Like doing a lazy Q&A, or reviewing a Barbie movie.  ...  Wait....  So as you may have noticed by now, none of the characters in this movie are named Barbie! So already, this movie is clickbait. As it turns out, a lot of these Barbie movies don't actually star Barbie. Rather they star "characters portrayed by Barbie" which is all sorts of confusing. But hey, it could be worse I guess. They could be portrayed by Amy Schumer. But luckily we still got a few years before that happens.   Oh, by the way, magic exist in this world. Yeah, I know I bring that up pretty suddenly, but so does the film. Princess Tori has a magic hairbrush that changes her hair, and Keira has a magical microphone that changes her outfit. And nothing is really brought up about this. Like the characters in the film say that it's magic, but nothing else is really elaborated upon. Because outside of the magic, the world the film presents seems to more or less be the same as our world. It's not like it's some fairy tale kingdom or anything, it's set in contemporary times. It's never brought up where the magic comes from, it's just there. And it's even weirder because all they use there magic for is for changing there hair and outfit. Y'know, THINGS YOU CAN DO WITHOUT MAGIC!
Tumblr media
Either that dress has a very large pocket, or this scene about to get a lot more uncomfortable.    Anyway, the studio blames Keira's manager Crider for not having the album done already. Because like in the real world, pop stars don't have to suffer any responsibility for there actions. Crider is by far the best character in this movie. He is the most over the top, foppish gay man you've ever did see. We learn a bit about his backstory, as he was once a child star himself on this universes version of Alvin and the Chipmunks. But when puberty hit he fell from the lime light faster than Macaulay Culkin. So naturally he is not only bitter at Keira for having to be blamed for all her actions, but also because he is jealous of her fame. He's a great villain not just because of how over the top flamboyant he is, but also because he gives a refreshing breath of cynicism and bitterness that the movie is otherwise lacking. Also he's voiced by Rolf from Ed Edd'n Eddy. He doesn't sound like Rolf, like at all. But simply knowing that makes the whole film a lot more enjoyable.  He tells his bumbling sidekick Rupert (Because why wouldn't he have a bumbling sidekick? I mean have you seen the type of movie this is?) that he plans on meeting Princess Tori's Aunt Amelia during a PR event, wooing her, and then inheriting all her money when she eventually passes away.
Tumblr media
Crider, Rupert, and Keira arrive at the castle the next day and Crider begins his plot to woo the duchess. Meanwhile, Princess Tori and Keira and immediately hit it off. They are both huge fans of the other, and become fast friends. Tori offers to give Keira a tour of the castle. They begin talking about the problems that they are both going through. This is where they hatch the idea to switch places, and do so using there magic hairbrush and microphone, in order to make themselves look exactly like the other.  Oh, and they also each have a dog. Because hey, little girls like dogs. There are some brief scenes we see between the dogs where they talk to each other in "animal language." but overall they don't contribute much to the plot, other than added marketability. Interesting side note, in the 2004 Barbie: Princess and the Pauper film they both had cats instead. Again, I guess dogs were just deemed more marketable.  Keira and Tori, now disguised as each other, continue there tour of the castle. This is when Tori decides to show Keira, the person she literally just met, the castles most valuable secret. A secret that only members of the royal family are permitted to know about. And this is where the movies gets WEIRD!  Okay, so they activates a secret passage and find a tree. And this tree, which only blooms once every five years, is a magic tree. That is guarded and cared for by a group of magically fairies. And the tree grows diamonds, which Tori says royal family uses the money from these diamonds to help the people! Though the fairies still give a diamond each to our protagonist. Again, it's weird because the world they create in this films universe SEEMS fairly real to our own. But then they just add random magical elements to it with no explanation. They could of at least included some backstory on where this tree came from. It feels like there just trying to check stuff off there "pandering to little girls" bingo sheet.
Tumblr media
AH! BINGO! I GOT BINGO!
Unfortunately for our heroines, Tori FORGOT TO CLOSE THE SECRET DOOR PANEL BEHIND HER and Aunt Amelia ends up finding the two snooping around the secret garden. AND SHE DOESN'T CLOSE THE DOOR EITHER! How the heck has this secret been kept for five hundred years? She get's mad at Keira (Who's still disguised as Tori) and the three leave the chamber. But unbeknownst to them, since Aunt Ameila DIDN'T CLOSE THE FRICKIN' SECRET PASSAGEWAY Crider finds out about the diamond tree. And now he decides to change his plan from marrying into money, to just stealing all the diamonds for himself. But that conflict can wait, because we have pop songs to preform.
This movie has a lot of pop songs. Like, about a third of the movie is pop songs. And I have to say...there actually really good. If you're into that kinda pop punk type of music that is. The voice actresses each have a separate singing voice in the form of Jennifer Waris (Tori) and Tiffany Giardina (Keira) and both singers really knock it out of the part. Not only that but there is also some really well done choreography. Not only that, but the film also really takes advantage of the CG medium, with some impressive camera angles and panning shots. I mean it's not the greatest thing ever or anything, but for a direct-to-DVD Barbie movie, I was pleasantly surprised. I feel like this is where the passion was when it came to making this movie. Like the story was second to the music.
However, I would be lying if I said that the music didn't drag on a bit. Just due to how much is in the special. Not only that but several songs are used more than once, which isn't that bad because they sound really good, but it does make it feel a bit repetitive. That said though, I was suppressed by how good this aspect of the film was.
So Tori and Keira both begin trying to fulfill the role of the others. However, the both seem to have a bit of trouble living up to the expectations of there new roles. Typical stuff you would expect from a
"Prince and the Pauper"
adaptation. Tori, now being disguised as a low class...world famous pop star....decided to take this opportunity to explore her kingdom beyond her castle without escorts.
(Because, yeah, a pop star TOTALLY wouldn't have escorts with her when she's walking through the slums of a foreign nation.)
And Tori ends up coming across something she's never seen before. Poor people!
More specifically two poor little girls, who are taken a back by "Keira's" presence. We learn that, despite how glamorous the castle life is for the royal family, the kingdom itself is actually suffering. A major drought had occurred in the kingdom the year prior, and while the wealthy nobility we're not effected much the poor people are still suffering, and Princess Tori was completely oblivious to what was going on the entire time.
So now that Princess Tori has finally
 Checked
 HER
CIS
 WHITE
PRIVILEGE!!!
-she decides to try to do right for the people by holding a free concert for all the underprivileged children. (Since the kids she met weren't able to afford to go to the concert at the beginning of the movie.) Not only that, but the whole royal family would be in attendance, and the concert would be broadcast live on TV to help raise awareness for the issue. Though Tori and Keira agree that they need to make sure they swap back before the concert starts.
Keira (disguised as Tori) begins to finally be able to relax without all of her pop star-ly duties. She begins to play and have fun with Tori's two little sisters, (who quickly figures out who she is.) And as it turns out, this break from all the stress of preforming and recording is what Keira needs in order to get re-inspired.
The day of the concert arrives, and Keira tries to meet up with Tori to swap places before the show begins. But rut-row, Aunt Amelia shows up and finds that "Tori" never ended up writing her speech. And because of this, Amelia refuses to let "Tori" go to the concert and locks her in her room. I do like that Keira actually does try to tell Amelia about the body swap ploy, in order to get her to let her out of the room. But Aunt Amelia doesn't believe her, and heads out for the concert.
As this is all happening, Crider and Rupert begin there plan to steal the diamond tree. They walk back into the castle claiming that the duchess sent them, and because plot the guards just let them in unsupervised.
Meanwhile at the concert, the crowd begins to get restless, and Tori is forced to go on stage and preform as Keira. She get's onstage, and is nervous. She begins to preform, badly. But then, with the power of "doing it her way"...whatever the hell that's suppose to mean, she is able to give a performance good enough that nobody is able to tell who she is in a pop song performance that last a total of five minutes straight in this seventy minute film!
The concert is a success. But wait, Crider and Rupert have successfully broken into the castles secret garden and have to face off against the fairies. Hey look, it's fairy vs fairy!
 ...
Am I allowed to make that joke?
Also Rupert brought bug spray to kill the fairies, which is pretty horrific for the villains bumbling side kick. Especially when you realize that this would be a Barbie movie that would have one of the villains using chemical weapons on his opponents. Granted, this doesn't happen, because Rupert accidentally bough hair spray instead, but still. It was his INTENT to use bug spray! Also, of course the villains of a Barbie movies use hair spray as a weapon.
Crider cuts the roots of the diamond tree all of the trees in the surrounding area begin to die. To which I have to ask....why? Is it like a redwood thing, where all the trees are actually just a part of this one organism? If that's the case than why don't all the tree's grow diamonds? Or is this a magic thing? Prior to this scene the tree was never implied to have any magical abilities besides growing diamonds. Was a jewel heist just not deemed an exciting enough climax, so they felt the need to raise the stakes here?
Keira, with the help of Tori's dog, are able to find a secret passage way out of the room and she and Tori both notice the dying trees and run to stop Crider from escaping with the tree. They also switch back into there real identity, and I just now realize as I'm writing this that Crider does not question this very much. HE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE WHOLE IDENTITY SWAPPING THING.
Also, let me talk about something that bothers me. There was this character earlier named Prince Liam who's "potrayed by Ken." He had a few scenes early on with Keira (who was disguised as Tori at the time.) I didn't bring him up because he honestly didn't really do anything that was important to the plot. But then, suddenly in the climax, he shows up like he was a main character or something. And he's annoying. He feels really tacked on, like the producers realized that there wasn't a romance element to this film and decided at the hour mark that there needed to be one. Except that doesn't even work because he doesn't even end up with either girls. With I admit was a pleasant surprise, that neither girls in the movie end up with a love interest. But it makes Liam's existence even more worthless. Also he's kinda misogynistic, talking about saving the "damsels in distress." even though they save themselves. All Liam does is take down Crider's sidekick.
Tumblr media
Crider runs to his limo, but is blocked by the dogs. Cause y'know, a pug and a King Charles spaniel just COMPLETELY BLOCK THE ENTIRE PATH!  So he ends up be stealing a horse drawn carriage in order to make his escape. Tori get's into Crider's limo and we get a kinda fun car/horse drawn carriage chase striped right out of the end of Ouran High School Host Club.  How is it that I've reviewed two things with that very weird and specific climax?  Anyway, they cut off Crider's carriage, but he has an ace up his sleeve. Turns out his leopard print tuxedo is also a GLIDE SUIT and he jumps off a cliff to make his dramatic escape! And that's why Crider the best character in this movie.  But then Keira just zaps him with her magic microphone and turns his suit into a dress. And Tori zaps his hair to make it look more feminine.    The villain is defeated, but the tree is still dead. But Tori has an idea. They suspect that maybe the diamonds that grew off the tree could act as the trees seeds. They go back to the garden and take the diamonds that the fairies gave them earlier and plant them into the ground. The fairies use there magic and at first it doesn't look like it'll work. But then, the tree begin to regrow and all the life returns to all the other trees all over the castle. This is actually a clever twist, except for the fact that the tree still has diamonds on it, even though they specifically say that it takes five years for the diamond to bloom.  BUT WHO CARES ABOUT THAT, WE HAVE A CONCERT TO FINISH! Yeah, Tori kinda just bailed in the middle of that. Tori and Keira both show up on stage, and preform together. Tori writes her speech and and talks about making changes to the kingdom's irrigation and social serves system to help the people harmed by the drought. Tori learns about responsibility and Keira kinda learns to relax...I guess? And the movie ends on a pop song. Y'know, a good book end.
Tumblr media
Puffy Ami Yumi?...  So that was Barbie: Princess and the Popstar! Overall what do I think of it?  Well, to be honest, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't kinda checking the time while watching it. Heck, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't even a little bit tired of thinking about it while writing this review. The main problem is the basic premises. Princess and the pop star. The whole point of "The Prince and the Pauper." is that it's a rich person with a lot of responsibility and a poor person with no responsibility changing places. But here, it's a rich person with some responsibility swapping roles with....another rich person with some responsibility. There's no real contrast, and because of that we only get the bare basics of character development or an actual moral. The overall animation is...okay. You can see there's ambition, but the lack of budget really makes it look like a Sims 3 machinima. The main villain is fun, but the rest of the characters are pretty basic. And the pop songs, while being extremely catchy and well choreographed take up somewhere between a third and a half of the film. And I feel like if the film used more of that time on more important things than maybe it would of been better.  If you want a movie with some so bad it's good elements (some actual good elements worked in) you MIGHT enjoy this film. But you  have to have the patience to get through some of the more tedious bits. Also I feel like a REALLY little girl might like this. I know people say "Kids deserve good things too." and there not wrong. But it's important to remember that kids have different taste than we do. When I was a kid I loved the Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, so that should be evidence of that. But if you want a GOOD girl power type of show or movie....there's plenty better out there. Steven Universe, My Little Pony, Star vs, Hanizuki, the list goes on and on. Those shows are girly AND can be legitimately enjoyed by anybody, young or old. This really can't.  That was my review of Barbie: Princess and the Popstar. If you've seen the movie by some...odd chance...tell me what you think of it in the comments down bellow. I would love to start a conversation. Anyway, see you next time for hopefully something better. Have a great day. (I do not own any of the images or videos in this review all credit goes to there original owners.)

French filmmaker Alice Guy-Blaché was a contemporary of the famed Lumière brothers, and was in many ways just as influential in the invention of cinema, yet 49 years after her death, she remains widely unknown. Guy-Blaché first encountered the new medium as the secretary of Léon Gaumont, founder of the Gaumont film studio. She apparently expressed boredom with the nonfictional “demonstration films” being produced by the studio and asked permission to make her own work, with a fictional storyline. The resulting work, La Fée aux Choux (The Cabbage Fairy), made in 1896, tells the whimsical tale of a woman who grows children in a cabbage patch and is widely considered the first ever narrative film. Guy-Blaché went on to make over 1000 films during her lifetime, driven by what she dubbed “fertile imagination”, and is thought to have coined the idea of filming on location as well as shooting one of the first close-ups.

The Nutcracker and The Four Realms – Official Trailer #2
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms Description
All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.
