‘Wow!’ Amelia launches her bag onto the sofa, having just arrived home from school to see the Christmas Tree up in the living room.
‘Hey sweetheart,’ you smile, still fluffing the branches out, ‘had a good day?’
‘Alright,’ she heads over to Josh, who’s playing with some toy cards on the floor, ‘hi Joshie.’
Jaehyun and Alissa trail in behind her, Jaehyun tossing his car keys into the pot in the doorway.
‘Oh, cool!’ Alissa marvels at the scale of the tree, which goes all the way up to the ceiling.
‘We’re gonna put the lights on and decorate after dinner, ok? When it’s darker and cosy.’
The girls finish homework and play some multiplayer video games together while you prepare dinner, Jaehyun joining Josh in playing with his toy car garage. Once your dinner of kimchi fried rice is finished, the twins clear away the dishes while you and Jaehyun string up multi-coloured fairy lights across the Christmas Tree.
Christmas songs play from your speaker, and you and Jaehyun hum along, occasionally chucking when Josh starts singing and dancing.
‘Okay kids, lights are on!’ You call, and the three of them quickly gather around, already beginning to rifle through the piles of ornaments and baubles on the floor.
Alissa starts first, grabbing a Tokyo Disneyland ornament from the pile, while Amelia picks up a hanging photo frame of Jaehyun holding a newborn twin in each arm. Josh takes a little longer, the girls having put on three or four baubles each before he’s even chosen one. Jaehyun helps him loop the ribbon over the tree brach, albeit a very low branch due to his height.
‘Good job, buddy,’ Jaehyun pats the back of his head, ‘wanna choose another one?’
He toddles over to the pile once again, returning to Jaehyun with a snowflake ornament.
‘Are you going to try it yourself this time?’ Jaehyun asks, pointing to an empty branch within Josh’s reach. Josh successfully places the ornament on the tree, Jaehyun giving him similar words of praise.
You love seeing Jaehyun like this, being so sweet and caring towards your children, absentminded smile, bare face, fluffy hair, dimples and eye scrunch on full display. It makes your heart all warm and your stomach all fuzzy.
With five of you, the tree fills up with baubles from around the world, various colourful ornaments and pine scent sticks.
‘And for the final touch,’ you produce a silver star, wires intertwining inside the shape with little white lights.
‘Now, since Amelia did it last year, and Alissa the year before,’ Jaehyun says, ‘and now that our Josh is all grown up, it’s his turn to put the star on the tree this year!’
Josh giggles and claps excitedly, making grabby hands for the star.
‘It’s ok, daddy’s gonna lift you up, little man,’ Jaehyun lifts him up from under his armpits, Josh waving the star around in his chubby little hand.
‘Go on, Jaehwan-ie,’ Amelia encourages.
It takes some guidance from Jaehyun, but eventually Josh manages to slot the large ornament onto the top stalk of the tree. The rest of you clap and cheer, much to Josh’s delight, who happily laps up the attention.
The three year old then very quickly loses interest, preferring to watch cartoons on the television rather than help all of you decorate the rest of the house. Alissa volunteers to watch over him (although you suspect she likely just can’t be bothered to help anymore) while the rest of you go through hanging wreaths on doors and wrapping fairy lights and tinsel around the bannisters, as well as placing ceramic ornaments on mantlepieces and tabletops.
Later, when all of the children are in bed asleep, you and Jaehyun enjoy hot chocolates on the sofa, admiring your work.
‘Another Christmas,’ Jaehyun smiles, ‘it’s crazy. The twins will be ten this year.’
‘Josh is old enough to put the star on the tree.’
‘They’re really growing up, huh?’ Jaehyun sighs, a little sadly, ‘anyway, Merry Christmas, love. We’ve had another amazing year.’
‘Merry Christmas, Jae.’

Down in the Underground
Kids were creepy sometimes.
Sarah likes kids just fine, which is why she works at a nursery. It helps pay for her additional schooling and the rest of the bills. She knows perfectly well that one must answer the imaginary telephone, drink the pretend tea, exclaim at the deliciousness of the flower and rock salad and, of course, praise the drawings as masterpieces of art.
But sometimes, kids said and did the darndest and the creepiest things. Like the time her baby brother Toby, at 2 years old, talked about the "pitty lady" visiting him at night.
The "pitty lady" was Grandma Amelia, who died just two months before Toby was born. They'd figured it out when he kept reaching for a picture of their grandmother in her younger years.
There was also the time her cousin Anne's little girl once said, "I don't like this house, Mummy. I got sick here when I was an old lady and nobody came to help me."
Her cousins later learned that the house they were planning to buy used to belong to an old woman who died alone, as she'd been estranged from her family. Needless to say, Anne and her husband looked for a different house.
And there was Daniel, her next door neighbor Lyta's baby, who Sarah and her flatmate watched over sometimes when the usual babysitter wasn't available. Daniel was the sweetest little man, sunny-tempered and generally well-behaved, who had just discovered the wonders of crawling. Crawling, not walking, although Sarah figures with those strong little legs of his, it was definitely going to be a thing in the very near future.
So Sarah puts the kid down in his crib, for his nap, right? And her flatmate insists that they bring the crib out to the living room, just to make sure they always have an eye on him. No big deal - a healthy dose of paranoia where little kids were concerned didn't hurt anyone.
And without fail, once he's awake, she finds sand all over the crib and in his pockets. His mum complains about the exact same thing. She's pretty sure the kid's clean when she puts him down for his nap. But yeah. Sand. Go figure.
Her flatmate is no help at all. The first time this happened, Calliope just stared down at Daniel, who gazed back up at her with big innocent eyes and then, she muttered something in exasperation that sounded like "Ohneeross!" and then she laughed.
And then, Calliope tells her not to worry about the sand. They'll just sweep it away.
Now, it's this drawing by little Holly Wheeler. She's another sweet kid and usually did everything in bright pinks and purples. Her drawings are usually a riotous explosion of rainbow colors, which is typical for a little girl like her. And now, right in the middle of the pinks, magentas, yellows and purples, is a tall pale figure dressed entirely in black, with black messy hair and pure black eyes ringed with blue, except for where Holly attempted to draw yellow stars in them.
"Holly, who's this?"
"Oh, that's Mister Sandman."
Now, Sarah knows her fairy tales and nursery rhymes and she's very up to date on kids' cartoons. The last time she checked, the Sandman didn't look like Slenderman's Creepy Cousin. "Mister Sandman? He looks a bit scary, doesn't he? Looks a bit like Mister Nightmare to me."
Holly looked completely offended. "He's not scary at all! He makes pretty dreams and he sings with me and he even sent me the monster under my bed so I wouldn't be scared when Mummy turns off the light!" A beat. "His name is Mister Jargogle."
***
"My Lord?"
His Darkness, the King of All Night's Dreaming, was rather engrossed in the crafting of a new dream, so he might be forgiven for sounding a little distracted. "Yes, Lucienne, what is it?"
"There… have been an unusual amount of youthful visitors to the Castle lately."
"Hm."
"Not that I mind seeing little ones around but -- "
"Oh, Lucienne, is there another one of those dragonfish brabbles making nests in the library shelves? I'll have Mervyn put them in Fiddler's Green or… hmm… just a moment -- " A pale hand waved gracefully and a rather short, fuzzy-looking red-orange nightmare with golfball eyes appeared. "This is Snottor. I've been meaning to send him along to help you."
"Wakka wakka!" The Nightmare greeted.
There's a flap of wings as Matthew settles down on Morpheus' shoulder. The raven was rather proud that he'd finally gotten shoulder-perching privileges and made use of it whenever he could. "Hey, is that a Muppet?"
Lucienne shook her head. "I appreciate the addition to my staff, my lord, but the children -- "
"Children are often in and out of the Dreaming, Lucienne. I rather enjoy tending to their dreams; childhood is when much of their imagination and creativity are shaped and formed."
"Wakka wakka!"
"He looks a little bit like Fozzy Bear," said Matthew, flapping down to inspect the new Nightmare a little bit closely. "I always loved the Muppets. Kermit's always gonna be my main frog, y'know?"
"The children," said Lucienne, deciding that now was a good time to polish off her glasses, "all know you by name, my lord. And not through the stories you inspire, but they know you quite well."
"Wakka wakka!"
"Help!" Matthew cawed. "It's gonna eat me!"
***
Sarah might have forgotten all about Holly's grimdark Mister Sandman, chalking it up to a little girl's overactive imagination.
But here he was again, in another child's drawing.
This time, it was little Gregory Martens, who was in her afternoon class. He was a thin, quiet, withdrawn little boy, who usually shrank back from the rough-housing of the other children, preferring to draw or read quietly in a corner of the room. His mother had told Sarah that Gregory was especially close to his father, though he didn't see the man often, as he was in the military.
"This is Mister Sandman," Gregory explains. "I have bad dreams, sometimes. Usually about my Da." He sniffs. "I don't want him to come home in a box, like the way Mandy's mumma did last year."
"Does he make the bad dreams go away, Gregory?" Sarah asks him. Her heart hurts when he mentions "the box" and she pats his shoulder comfortingly.
Another sniff. Sarah hands him a tissue and helps him blow his nose. "Mister Sandman says that sometimes you just have to face the bad stuff in your dreams. I guess that means I gotta be brave, like my Da. Sometimes, Mister Sandman just walks me away from the box and just tells me stories."
"What stories?"
"I don't remember all of it when I wake up. But I think I will, one day."
***
Hob Gadling doesn't mind the damage to his clothes. He's watching his son, Robyn, finally making that important milestone from crawling to walking. The baby is clearly trying to stand up on his own, pushing up against the floor with chubby fists.
Finally, he makes it to a full standing position and Hob kneels, boisterously encouraging his boy onwards. Every detail of Robyn's face is so clear, the bright blue eyes that he'd inherited from his mother, the flaxen hair, the rosy, chubby cheeks. The little one takes one step and then another and then another, until he comes right to his father's arms. Hob sweeps him up bellowing with joy and the baby shrieks happily with him.
It is much, much later that Eleanor indulgently plucks the baby from his father's arms, because it's time for his nap and Robyn will be ill-tempered without it. Hob steps back and knows, without having to look, that Dream is there, right beside him.
"Thank you, love," Hob tells him, his voice thick. "I'd near forgotten what my boy looked like."
"It is the child's birthday today, is it not?" Dream draws him close and they take a moment just to breathe in each other's scent, before they sink into each other's embrace.
Hob's face is wet with tears when he wakes up but Dream is still there in his arms, waiting for him. There are whispered words of love and a sharing of memories and the deepest grief. There are clasped hands and kisses exchanged.
In the end, there is warmth, comfort and consolation.
***
Sarah sees the drawing of "Mister Sandman" again in another child's drawing, from the primary school classes, which were just next door to the nursery. He's in a few more drawings, as well, from different children, but the depiction is eerily the same - the tall slender figure always in black, amidst a riot of colors.
It was, she suddenly realizes, an honest-to-God meme among the nursery and primary school set. It was a freakin' creepypasta come to life.
Of course she takes pictures. Of course she asks the kids about the drawings, when she can. A dream of being a lady knight, riding to adventure on a dragon. A dream about the monsters in the closet or under the bed, or for one child, the monster who kept him company in his cupboard bedroom under the stairs. That one led to social services swooping in and taking the poor little boy away to finally live with his doting godparents, instead of the aunt who had so cruelly neglected him.
And then, she reads this story by her classmate and neighbor, Rose Walker, who'd gotten published in the university's literary journal. It's accompanied by an illustration, the artist signing his name as Will Byers.
"The King of All Night's Dreaming" was the title. A tall, elegant, pale figure in black and gold, jewelry sparkling in his hair, flashes of diamond and silver, with stars in his eyes, surrounded with colors.
***
The Guardians of the Castle Gate had loved the first child who was conceived and born in the Dreaming.
Their Lord had once walked out, seeking his son, only to find him held carefully, gently, in his Griffin's mouth. Orpheus was giggling, bright little sounds that warmed his heart. He had his father's eyes.
"The little lord wanted to play, sire," the Wyvern told him, a little abashed.
Morpheus was nonplussed but his little one was content and happy, and so he left them to it. Later, he knew that the little boy would come sit at his feet, happy to watch his father create dreams and nightmares. They would sing together, sing a song of shaping, and their delight would always draw in Morpheus' little sister to join them.
***
Rose Walker laughs when Sarah tells her about the "Mister Sandman meme" and points out the resemblance to the picture in Rose's story.
"Oh my god, I'm never gonna let him live this down."
"What."
"Okay, so, uhm, my friend Will just decided to draw someone we both knew as the Dream King in my story. It's kind of a joke. And well, I guess he really is magic with kids. Daniel just loves him."
"This guy," Sarah tapping gently at the ethereal figure in the picture, "is based on a real person?!"
"Yeah. He's very much real. Also he's not Slenderman. I think he'd be offended at the very idea." Rose paused for a beat. "Or maybe not. I really have to ask him about the nightmare thing."
"You're not making any sense here, friend and I'm still, quite frankly, creeped the hell out."
"Look, Sarah," Rose said, taking her arm. "I think you better come with me to my next class. You got the next couple of hours free, right?"
"Well, yeah, Richmond called off his classes today."
"Okay, come on."
Sarah realizes that Rose is leading her to Calliope's literature class. She hasn't had a chance to sign up for her flatmate's classes yet, though she's heard good things about it. She plans to do that next semester.
Calliope smiles at her in recognition when they take their seats. She's a great lecturer, animated and engaging the class in discussion. And then, she tells them that she's invited a guest to read some of Shakespeare's poetry for them, dark eyes impish with mischief.
And then, "Mister Sandman" glides in.
All right. So he's not Slenderman's Creepy Cousin. He's… okay, oh god, oh wow…. so Sarah feels the flush creeping up her neck and Rose rolls her eyes at her. What? She can't help it if the man is ridiculously beautiful, rocking out the Gothic vibe in the long black coat and the black boots.
He greets Calliope with a courtly kiss to her hand. "I hope you realize what you've done. He'll be terribly upset with me."
"Oh, I'm sure he will be, Oneiros," Calliope purrs. "I am also sure you'll enjoy every moment of making it up to him."
Some of the class, who were apparently in on the joke, titters.
"GO GET YOUR MAN, MURPHY!" Someone hollers.
There is a suspicious flush on those exquisite cheekbones but he simply shakes his head and then, does a little wave, when he notices Rose.
"You're hopeless, Uncle Dream," Rose calls out.
"Uncle Dream?!"
Rose nodded. "Yep, that's my Uncle Dream, who's a dork sharing his one braincell with my history professor. Now shush."
Rose's Uncle Dream takes the book of Shakespeare's sonnets from Calliope and reads.
"Reads" was an inadequate word for it. To be honest, Sarah's not sure if there was a word for how Dream's voice sounded, deep and rich and lulling, making her almost see the images evoked by every line. The class is spellbound for what seems to be an eternity, before he finally closes the book on the last line. There's a very audible sigh from everyone and it isn't long before they all applaud.
"Careful, Oneiros," Calliope teases him. "Or you might be snatched up for the theatre or teaching a class of your own very soon."
"In which case, I shall rely on my own dearest knight to save me from the ordeal," he responds, smiling gently at her. "Once I've apologized to him properly for the blasphemy of Shakespeare."
"I am sure he will, once you explain that he was very much in your thoughts whilst you read every line of that sonnet. You are besotted, Oneiros. And utterly ridiculous."
Once again, he kisses her hand in the same charming, courtly manner. "But if the while I think on thee, dear friend, all losses are restored and sorrows end."
"Oh, you're impossible!" She laughs at him as he takes his leave, sweeping out as dramatically as he walked in.
Sarah shrinks in her seat. Well. That happened.
***
There's another little boy making his way to the Dreaming.
Daniel Hall greets the wyvern, the griffin and the hippogriff with a happy crow and he's allowed to ride on the griffin's back, pudgy fists holding on to his mane. They spend quite some time playing until their attention is caught by a polite cough.
Dream of the Endless is watching them. An eyebrow is raised.
"The little lord wanted to play, sire," the Wyvern tells him once more in a helpful tone.
The Guardians are quite confused when Dream suddenly snatches Daniel up for a hug, nor did they understand the tears in his eyes, or
the sudden darkening of the skies in the Dreaming, threatening rain. Daniel only knows that he ought to hug Dream back, which he did, something that his own Mummy did when he was feeling sad.
He pats at Dream's cheek, making a clumsy attempt to wipe away his tears but Dream manages a soft, watery smile. "Shall we go and create a new dream today, little Daniel?"
Daniel nods happily.
-end-
Footnote the First: Sarah Williams was eventually introduced to the Hellfire Club and took to the whole D&D thing like a duck to water. She was also responsible for the sudden improvement in everyone's costumes and props. She did, eventually, find out who and what Dream really was, but that was only after her baby brother was snatched away by the Goblin King and she had to go through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered to take him back.
Footnote the Second: Matthew would like it to be known that Nightmares, even the ones that greatly resemble Muppets, are not allowed to eat His Majesty's Ravens. He appreciates Dream enforcing this rule and quite forgave him when all the Muppet Nightmares joined together to sing Bohemian Rhapsody as their idea of an apology.
Footnote the Third: Hob Gadling made sure to send Calliope a lovely bouquet of flowers, as a token of appreciation, once he'd heard about the "Shakespeare Incident" in her classroom. Dream had been very creative in the whole process of "making it up" to him, which was probably why it rained red roses, lavender and peonies in the Dreaming for the next two weeks. Hob could not be held responsible for the happy daze he spent the next day in. Twitterpated was probably the best word here and it was also an excellent word to describe the Dream Lord when he went about his duties afterwards. At least Lucienne now had a faithful assistant helping her clean up the flowers in the library, although he rather liked nibbling on the peonies. At least, he wasn't trying to eat Matthew anymore.

Flufftober 2022
I promised myself no angst for a couple of days, like not at all, so let's try this lol
These are just prompts, i can't promise i'm going to write a single story past this point, considering that it was supposed to be for october and not november but who knows.🤷🏻‍♀️
1. Wearing Each Other’s Clothes: It's starts with a shirt with a dumb print on and it doesn't really ends anywhere. (Goose/Slider, sharing clothes during the years);
2. "You’ve told your parents?": To my granma 'lie, but yeah. I told her. (Halo/Phoenix, Nat's granma and her sweet tea are the reason Callie doesn't want to come back);
3. Thick as Thieves: Penny knows them all and Sarah loves to gossip. (Penny Benjiamin & Sarah Kazansky, forties are the new twenty and all the shit none of them believes in);
4. Supporting Silly Quirks/Hobbies: Mickey likes to collect the smallest action figures of his favourite characters. 'Ben likes spending the day walking around. It's a win win. (Fanboy/Payback, 'Ben has to remember Mickey to put sunscreen on at least four times during the day, it always gets a kiss after);
5. "Oh no, you’re a Morning Person!": Neil is a morning person, Bob is really not. (Bob&Omaha, how to work around a new queer platonic relationship and make your partner stay in bed after six);
6. Candles, Lanterns, Fairy Lights: Amelia loves fairy lights, and Charlie knows the perfect place and what to buy her for her birthday (Charlie & Amelia; charliepenny implied);
7. Movie Marathon: Ice likes sci-fi, Slider never saw one. The cinema, three streets from the Academy, offers the perfect opportunity to remedy that. Mother Goose offers caramel popcorn and witty comments. (Iceman & Slider & Goose, academy era)
8. Shooting Stars: Carole takes Bradley to see the stars when neither of them can sleep (Carole & Bradley)
9. Game Day (Sports): they can't decide which one is the best time, in normal times, but when the Navy is playing? all hands on deck and fuck the Army ('86 class and their barbecue)
10. Love Language: Learning ASL is probably more complicated than all the math he does when he's flying. But the way his husband smiles at him when he sings back good morning makes all the work feel like a walk in the park (Icema/Maverick; post-cancer arc);
11. Poetry, Art, Music, Craft: Fritz likes to paint, and a small gallery decided to expose some of them, the daggers put their best clothes to go and see it. (Fritz & the daggers; they are the bestest of friends; found family);
12. "You kept this?": Mav puts his scarf around Ice's neck during a deployment in the middle of ocean because Tom forgot his. Twenty years later, Mav finds the scarf again, in on of his husband's drawers. (Iceman/Maverick).
13. Secret Family Recipe: Ice teaches him how to make his famous pie which becomes Bradley's comfort food. (Iceman & Rooster; father-son relationship);
14. Truth or Dare/20 Questions:
15. Accidents don't just happen accidentally: Warlock is always sitting in the seat to Bernie's right. Doesn't matter how full or empty the class is (Warlock/Hondo; au- university);
16. "I hate you" – "I love you too": Cyclone would like to not be part of it, but apparently he had to assist to the strangest love declaration of the world (Hangman/Rooster; poor Cy);
17. Animal Shelter: the story of how Hollywood and Wolfman ended up adopting a turtle. (Hollywood/Wolfman, retold by Sunny because it's funnier this way);
18. Soulmate AU: They don't need to look down to know they found each other (Iceman/Maverick; enemies to lovers);
19. Hot Chocolate: Carole likes to treat herself with a cup of hot chocolate sometimes. She likes even more to share it with Goose and Slider. (Carole/Goose/Slider; domesticity; good days to celebrate);
20. Bedtime Stories: Chipper as the wildest bedtime stories for Bradley and Goose doesn't know where he takes them (Chipper & baby Bradley; Goose);
21. Kiss for Good Luck: 2011 and Mav is going to fly away in less than thirty seconds. Tom takes the first step and says "i'm going to kiss you for good luck", Mav laughs and kisses him a second time. (Iceman/Maverick; first public kiss after the DADT was repealed);
22. "Have you heard?":
23. POV Outsider: Charlie is sorely confused by the scene in front of her. (Slider/Goose/Carole; they're dancing together, ain't that complicated lol);
24. All the Hugs: Javy is the one who gives the best hugs, but sometimes Javy needs to be hugged too. (Coyote & The Daggers; they're going to hug all javy's problems away);
25. First Dance: The song is cheesy and Nat's cheeks hurt for how much she's smiling (Phoenix/Halo; just married).
26. Blankets: Logan takes a particular blanket with him everywhere he goes and doesn't share it with anyone. Than Brigham, his posh name and his even posher callsign, comes around and Yale just pass it like it's nothing. (Yale/Harvard; cuddling);
27. Reunion: They meet in the middle of sky, Mav on his plane, Ice, Carole and Goose on a cloud. It feels like getting home (canon top gun: maverick; while going down mav sees them all and spends time with them; mav&goose&carole; mav&ice);
28. Picnic: Sunny invites Chip out for a picnic, and they end up sharing their lunch with a dog (Sunny/Chip; a cute doggo);

"The Eleventh Hour" thoughts
this is such a fun, explosive opening to the season and the new era as a whole. moffat episodes always leave me w so many notes so i'll try to get through this normally
so we see amy's beautiful dilapidated garden, the broken bench and overgrown ivy, while mournful singing plays overtop. fairy tale imagery that will carry us through to eleven's very last episode (and even into twelve, altho twelve has a more straightforward aesop fable thing going on). baby amy is praying to santa about the crack in her wall and i think this is a good intro for the kind of kid she is, the one who asks a larger-than-life half-fantasy man for help. she doesn't ask god, she asks santa, so of course she imprints on the doctor, who at this point is far more like the latter than the former
"are you a policeman?" "did you call a policeman?" eleven is very good w baby amy! he doesn't brush her off, he wants to comfort her in a language she understands, so if she mentions the police, he'll meet her there. she feeds him, montage of him thinking it's all ickyucky. fish fingers and custard you nasty ass. "amelia pond, like a name in a fairy tale" there we go. she gives him an apple w a face carved in and he keeps it even tho he already said he hates apples now
"prisoner zero has escaped" this would have scared the fuck outta me at age 7 so she's honestly being really brave to me. he promises to be back in 5 minutes. she packs up a suitcase, puts on her coat, sits outside waiting. and waiting, and waiting. a door at the end of her hall opens wider and wider
we skip forward! coma patients all saying "doctor" on repeat. hi rory. adult amy! she doesn't say who she is and says amelia hasn't lived there in 6 months and eleven keeps insisting it couldn't have been 6 months. there's a room she can only see in the corner of her eye and she goes inside and there's a fucked up evil eel in it. it's fine. he realizes she was lying about the 6 months thing and says "why did you say 6 months?" and she snaps back "why did you say 5 minutes?"
"i'm the doctor, i'm worse than everybody's aunt" that tracks. he uses rory's phone to track prisoner zero and wants to meet up w amy's handsome friend jeff to steal his laptop. rory is not happy about this assessment. eleven busts into jeff's room and snags the computer and says "get a girlfriend, jeff" in response to whatever he was looking at. he joins a worldwide genius zoom call or something idk
they go to the hospital and olivia colman is there! she's credited as "mother" and she is in fact mothering. "the pandorica will open," she says, "silence will fall" i am so excited. eleven tricks her into revealing herself and she gets arrested and then he demands the atraxi come back bc how DARE they threaten earth. he steals doctors' clothes and we get the iconic bow tie and tweed coat. this entire end monologue fucks so severely, it's the kind of thing moffat is so good at it and matt smith excels at performing, this fast-talking quick-witted sharp-spined arrogance. lil montage of all the previous doctors. "basically, run" that's my baby right there!!
he comes back two years later to pick up amy and she deliberately does not mention it's the night before her damn wedding. he says he's been alone too long and wants company, very hard left turn from the time lord victorious but it makes sense. she agrees to come and i like the new tardis interior :) eleven's later classic-style interior is my fave but this one is nice too. eccentric ass. next ep is one of my faves!

WELL. The year was *checks date of file activity* 2020? I think it was actually earlier? Anyway once upon a time, fairy tale retellings were all the rage, and I was very in my gender-binary-no-bueno stage, which led to a lot of extremely genderfluid/androgynous protagonists. Anyway. There were an abundance of posts floating around tumblr about proper medieval etiquette and how the story of Sleeping Beauty broke all of them... The result was a retelling with a former-handmaid mother who was a touch more politically savvy, a shapeshifting fairy, and teenage ruminations on the nature of evil.
A snippet:
Amelia’s voice was soft with timidity, but her words were snatched by harsh focus as soon as they left her bitten lips. “A lack of invitation must have been an oversight, for I cannot place your face to a name. You have our–” Amelia fudged a tad on her Lord’s part– “immediate regrets, and our hopes that you may enjoy the festivities nevertheless.”
The creature’s beetle eyes ticked towards her again for a moment, and Amelia would have forgotten to breathe if the small breaths in her arms did not remind the mother to breathe as well. Then with a whisper of shady robes and a tense creak of Amelia’s bones, the creature rose to stand a head above Amelia. Their bejeweled gaze stared down on Amelia, but she could do nothing but stand her ground and offer yet her hospitality.
“I have not yet even had the chance to present my gift,” the creature murmured in a voice that only Amelia could hear. She hoisted her daughter into a better position on her shoulder, and offered a shaky smile.
“My daughter is very…blessed,” Amelia dissuaded quietly. “I do not believe that a child could need any more than the gifts she has already been given,” she continued to whisper to what loomed over her head.
With a quiet moment and a quiet catch of breath, Amelia thought that, perhaps, cooler heads might prevail.
And then her arms were empty and her baby was singing her screams.
BACK, the creature snarled, again more shadow than form, the royal princess seated miserably its arms as she did her best to scream. The fairies that had leapt forward to attack were forced to step back one by one, until the creature seemed comfortable with the amount of space between it and the spirits surrounding it. More relaxed, but still clutching her baby in its arm, it poured its many-faced eyes into Amelia’s soul.
This babe, it began again, holding Amelia’s gaze so tight that Amelia feared she could never wrest herself from it, shall die before it lives. This babe shall wither and dry in the young bloom of its life. Seeing the sun, it will die. Tasting the cool water of life, it will die. This child will not live to see its own children.
Amelia’s mind whirled with fear and horror, watching her child writhe and cry in the arms of something not human. With a needle-thin claw, it scraped a thread-thin dot of blood over her baby’s brow.
And so it is, the beetle-eyed creature said to only the baby, who did nothing but let out the most pitiful, miserable, musical scream.
Amelia sprinted forward, skirts be damned.
By the time her arms reached her baby, pulling her daughter out of the air and holding her gently in her arms, the creature had disappeared in a cloud of shadow, obscuring the gathered crowd, the cohort, and Amelia in kind.
“I believe!” Amelia shouted at the top of her lungs, unsure where the crowd was that she addressed, “That this ceremony is over!”

Ficlet Advent Calendar 2022 - December 4
Tumblr media
Title: Rooster the mustached pilot Fandom: Top Gun: Maverick Characters: Penny Benjamin, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, Jake “Hangman” Seresin, Reuben “Payback” Fitch, Natasha “Phoenix” Trace Word Count: 858 Rating: Teen and up audiences Songs: 2000 Miles by Pretenders, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Summary:  Penny Benjamin is decorating The Hard Deck for Christmas and Maverick calls for reinformcement to help her. However, when the young pilots arrive, the decorating turns into something else. Notes:  Originally I just wanted something with Maverick and the Daggers helping Penny with decorating the bar, but then my brain went wild.
December 4 - Rooster the mustached pilot
Looking around the empty bar, Penny Benjamin let out a sigh. She had just taken out the boxes with the Christmas decorations, but she didn’t feel like putting them up. She was planning to do it with Amelia – they always did it together -, but she had a test the next day and ad to study. She was thinking about a giving it a rain check, but she was already late with the decorations. Being alone she might not finish today, so her daughter might have to join her in the end.
She connected her phone to the bar’s speakers and pressed play on her Christmas playlist to set the mood, then she started it. The first thing she hanged was the wreath on the front door then she opened all the boxes and took the ornaments out on the tables to see the whole collection. She had Santa Clauses from all over the world, given by the sailors and aviators from their deployments, knowing she was collecting them. They also liked to see them on display in The Hard Deck; it made them feel honored when they saw their Santas hanging from a model plane or standing on a shelf.
“He’s gone two thousand miles It’s very far,” Panny sang along to the playlist as she was standing on the bar top, hanging a string of fairy lights between the model planes.
“The snow is falling down Gets colder day by day I miss you,” she continued, and it sounded like another voice had joined her, going a little off-key.
Looking behind, she saw Captain Pete Maverick Mitchell walking towards her, smiling.
“I can hear people singing It must be Christmastime,” he was still singing, even after Penny had already stopped.
“Hello, Pete,” Penny greeted him with a wide smile.
“Do you need a hand?” he asked.
“I could use one,” she replied. “Or more.”
“I think we can arrange that,” the aviator grinned at her, then he pulled a Santa hat out of his jacket’s pocket and put it on. It made Penny raise a brow, but it warmed her heart to see him in such a good mood. Maverick sent a message on his phone then slid it back to his pocket.
“What’s with the hat?” she wondered once he joined her on the bar top.
“I applied to for the role of Santa in this year’s Christmas show,” he told her. “I always wanted to try that.”
“What? Wear red and give presents to the children?” Penny asked.
“Why not? I think I could handle it.”
“But you’re aware that you won’t get to ride the sleigh,” she joked.
“Unfortunately I am, but a man can dream,” he laughed. Although he would definitely give it a try had he ever had a chance to sit in Santa’s sleigh.
After a short while, Maverick heard the sound of cars parking next to the bar and a grin broke out on his face.
“My reindeer have arrived,” he announced, as a group of young pilots walked into the bar: Hangman, Bob, Phoenix, Coyote, Payback, and Fanboy, all ready to decorate. Only Rooster was missing.
Penny had to laugh because seeing Maverick’s team walking in, the only thing she could think about was the song Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. She told this to the pilots, of course, which led to the whole group singing this song while decorating and writing some new lyrics to it. When Rooster arrived about half an hour later, the others gone suspiciously quiet.
“Sorry, I just saw the message,” he said. “What did I miss?”
A smile touched Maverick’s lips and they all shared a look before they started singing:
“You know Hangman and Phoenix and Payback and Fanboy And Coyote and Bob, But do you recall The hairiest pilot of all?
Rooster the mustached pilot, Had a very hairy nose And if you ever saw it, You could tell how fast hair grows.”
“Seriously?” Rooster raised a brow, but he couldn’t hide his grin. “Is this what you were doing while I was in Cyclone’s office?”
“There’s actually one more verse,” Hangman said, then started to sing:
“All of the other pilots Often laugh and call him names ‘Cause he’s an overthinker and too old for pilot games”
“I think we can all be grateful for you being a pilot and not a lyricist,” Rooster laughed. He found the song funny and somewhat accurate. Although he didn’t really understand why they were singing about him.
“Well, you weren’t there, to begin with,” Phoenix said with a small shrug. “And your call sign starts with R.”
“I see,” he nodded. “But just for the record, Cyclone has a lot more hair in his nose, than I have.”
“And on his chest,” Payback added with a grin, making the whole team laugh.
“While you’re discussing who’s the hairiest of them all, hang these lights above the pool table,” Penny stepped to Rooster, handing him a set of fairy lights, and as she walked away, she was humming the re-written song about Rooster the hairy pilot. Now she was in a much better mood.

Hello! If you are still doing that ask game, 41 please :)
thanks Amelia!!
What's your favorite cartoon? For current cartoons, probably Bob's Burgers-- it's so lovely and earnest and funny and warm. For 90s cartoons I think it might be Doug. I still sing "Killer Tofu" and think about several of my fave episodes in spite of not having watched it in years!! And for the 80s, it might've been the Gummi Bears. I loved those lil guys!! I wanted gummiberry juice so bad, and I wanted to bounce around and be a cross between the cute teen girl bear (Sunni) and the chubby one (Tummi).
Also shoutout to the Smurfs (classic) and the secondary Alf cartoon (can you believe there was more than one??) that was re-tellings of fairy tales starring aliens like Alf.

Bondman and the Princess 3/9
CHAPTER 3
ANYA
October 29
“I expect you all to give your very best try in tomorrow morning’s rehearsal!” The music teacher looked over all the students as the bell rang. “Only the hardest workers will be the pumpkin royalty. You’re dismissed, go back to your classroom.”
The class erupted into conversation. Damian was swarmed by his friends, who started encouraging him to get the boys’ solo. Anya let her eyes glaze over as she swung her arms cheerfully. She caught a girlish voice above the crowd.
“Because you’re soooo good-”
Becky scowled at Amelia's back. "She's so arrogant!" Becky pointed at the other girl. "You should be the pumpkin queen, Anya-chan! Not her!"
"Eh?" Anya blinked and followed the finger to where Amelia was cooing and giggling in a crowd of other girls. "Pumpkin queen?" It took a moment to remember. She put up her hands defensively. "Anya doesn't want to sing the solo," she said.
"Maybe you'd get another star," Becky said slyly. “The solos are for the students who really impress the teacher, after all! Wouldn’t your Father be so proud of you? I think your Mother would be so happy she might cry.”
Anya stiffened. Her jaw dropped. "Aahh…" she fidgeted. "Anya… really really doesn't want to sing alone." The thought was so scary. "But another star .."
"Think about it," Becky wheedled. She skipped ahead and then began walking backwards. "Ne, Anya-chan? We forgot to talk about costumes!" Her eyes sparkled. "We should be princesses!" She clapped her hands. "How about the snow princess? Or the forest princess? The ocean princess?" She gasped. "A fairy princess veterinarian!"
Anya blinked again. "Bondman," she said.
Becky’s face turned funny. “Bondman,” she repeated.
“Yes. Bondman. Princess Honey.” Anya nodded. That was the princess she was going to be! She already had the costume.
“Well… I guess I can be the Bondman princess.” Becky’s eyebrows pulled together in thought. “She’s pretty cute, I think.”
‘“Very cute!” Anya cheered.
Their teacher leaned out of the classroom to scowl at whoever was being loud.
Anya jumped into better posture and filed into the classroom, back super-straight. “Hehehe…”
When school finished, she piled onto the bus and waved goodbye to Becky. She colored on the ride, tongue sticking out between her teeth as she focused on making a dog that was also a lemon.
At her stop, she shoved everything back in her bag and skipped down to where Mama should be waiting.
She looked one way. She looked the other.
“Mama isn’t here,” Anya said, uncertainly. She took a deep breath. “Anya will go home alone!” She started off at a march, because she was a big girl. It was only a couple of minutes to the apartment and then up the stairs. She twisted the doorknob to find it was unlocked. “Anya is home!” She beamed. Mama must have been testing her, and she’d passed it.
The wrong voice greeted her. “Aa.”
She stared up at him. “Father?” Anya looked into the kitchen and down the hallway. Mama was always here. “Eh?”
‘Oh, she’s disappointed that it’s me and not Yor-san.’
That wasn’t true! Anya was just surprised.
“Yor-san has to work late today,” he said. His eyes moved when he smiled down at her “So it is just the two of us. Wash your hands and take off your school uniform. I need your help with the snack.”
‘Anya can help!’
Anya let her excitement come out her mouth and she ran to wash her hands.
They made snacks together, Anya on her very own step stool. She beamed and leaned into Daddy. He was warm and strong and he knew so many things.
When they had finished eating and washing their hands, Anya went off to watch Spy Wars while Daddy cleaned up in the kitchen. She didn’t know how much time passed as she gradually crept closer and closer to the T.V.
Electricity buzzed against her nose. Reluctantly, Anya scooted backwards from the T.V. screen. Her eyes itched so she blinked, but she didn't want to miss a second!
"Anya, it's time for dinner!"
Daddy's voice was faint. She barely noticed it over the trombone music. Anya bounced in place, hands splayed on the carpet.
The T.V. turned off.
"Eh?!"
Anya jerked around.
Daddy was standing there in his white apron, holding the remote. "It's recorded," he reminded her. He was trying to be stern but his eyes were soft. "You can finish after you eat. Please go wash your hands."
"Okay!" Anya chirped. She jumped up and skipped to the bathroom. She pulled out the step stool because she was a big girl who could wash her hands alone. She began humming the alphabet song, dancing in place as she sudsed her hands thoroughly. She shook her hands, flicking water on the mirror, and then ran to the dinner table.
"Hello, Mama!" Anya gave Yor a hug around the waist and then climbed up into her seat. Her eyes went wide at dinner. "Fried rice!" she cried out. She slapped her hands on the table. "Fried rice, fried rice!"
Yor beamed. "It smells wonderful, Loid-san," she said quietly. "I thought your plan was to make chicken today?"
Daddy's eyes slid to Yor. He didn't let his expression change. "The chicken didn't turn out correctly, and we had leftover rice to use," he said with a smile.
Anya knew what this meant. Daddy had to cook twice, so-
"Mama put soap on the pan again!" Anya declared.
"Eh??" Yor jumped and turned wide eyes on Anya. "Soap- soap cleans things, Anya!"
Daddy's smile was a little strained. "Green tea or water?" He asked.
"Anya wants apple juice!"
"Green tea or water."
Anya pouted. "Water." She held out her glass.
"Water, please." Daddy corrected.
"Apple juice, please!"
"It was a nice try," Yor said. She patted Anya's hand and smiled. "Maybe juice can be your dessert!" She looked at Daddy.
He nodded. "That's fine," Daddy agreed.
Anya wilted. She wanted ice cream for dessert…
After dinner and dessert, Anya raced back to finish watching the new Spy Hunter episode. She sat on the sofa this time and swung her legs. When a new character came on the screen, she sat straight up with a gasp. "Mama!" Anya bounced. "Mama!"
Yor rushed into the room, eyes flicking to Anya, the window, the door, and then back to Anya. Her body relaxed. "What is it?"
Anya pointed to the T.V., where the ballerina was still on screen. Ribbons trailed from her custom pink bazooka as she leapt into the air. "That's you!" she said triumphantly. "For Halloween!" Candy Dancer blew down the wall of the secret park fortress and landed on the rubble. Her tutu ruffled in the wind.
Yor turned her head to the side and examined the character. "She seems nice. Okay, Anya. I'll find a ballerina costume."
Anya cheered. "And I'm the princess! And Daddy is Bondman!"
"Of course he is," Yor agreed warmly. She bussed a kiss to the top of Anya's head and then took a few steps towards the door. "Daddy is reading now, Anya. Please use your indoor voice from now on, alright?"
"Yes, Yor," Anya agreed. She was turning her attention back to the T.V. when she accidentally caught a stray thought from Yor.
'I'll make a call while they're busy. I forgot to tell the shopkeeper about my successful assignment. ah.. what was his name? I don't remember who I killed.'
Yor had her arms crossed and was tapped at her chin with one finger.
Anya's full body flinched. She stared, aghast.
It took a few seconds for Yor to notice. "Anya?" Her eyes went wide and worried. "Is something wrong?"
Beep
Beep
Beeeeep
"Spy Hunter is almost over!" Anya spat out, the first excuse that popped into her head once her brain rebooted. "and, ah, Anya is very sad-"
Yor made a sympathetic sound.
"Becky is going to be the princess too," Anya babbled. "She said she wanted a set costume and we should be princesses and I said I was going to do Bondman and so she said she'd do Bondman princess for the concert and then we will match after! It will be good!"
She remembered something and frowned. "I can't wear my costume at the concert," Anya said darkly. A cloud blew over her face. Becky was going to wear her princess costume during the cello concert.
But Anya didn't play the cello. She had to be in the pumpkin choir.
Anya wilted. She didn't wanna be in the pumpkin choir! Especially if she might have to be the pumpkin queen. She felt her eyes swell up with tears.
"Is it too late to learn the cello?" Anya wondered quietly. She looked up for an answer. "Mama, can you teach me the cello today?"
Yor was frowning. She didn't seem to hear. "Anya-chan, is there any chance that Becky thinks you meant you'd be Bondman?"
She blinked. She thought over their conversation.
…Maybe.
"No," Anya said stubbornly. She curled her fingers into her dress. "Of course not. I can't be Bondman. Daddy is going to be Bondman."
Yor's expression became thoughtful.
'If we are Bondman, the Bondman princess, and the ballerina as a family, will Anya's friend feel left out?'
Was… Was Becky going to be upset? Anya felt sweat drip down her face. "Anya will talk to Becky tomorrow!" she declared. She hoped Becky wouldn't be sad. Anya felt a guilty shudder. She wanted world peace! She didn't want to make anybody sad.

Of Kings and Thieves
Prompt: Fairy Tale
Pairing: Kaz x reader + Aunt and Uncle Crows
Word count: 2545
A/N: okay so this is my first ever attempt at writing SoC/SaB so please, be easy on me. I am so sorry if the crows are too OC, I tried to make them as close to canon as possible.
Tumblr media
Giggles echo throughout the room muffled by the rustling of sheets as a tiny body plops back against the bed of pillows dramatically, arms flopped out on either side of her to take up as much room as physically possible. And she does, for such a small body. A chuckle follows her, an oil lamp casting large shadows against the cloth walls of the tent fort they had just finished.
“Move over, little one. I need to fit, too.” laughter erupts when you wiggle in next to her, grumbling about having needed to make it bigger, half sitting against her, making her squeal.
“Mama!” she huffs, shoving at you with as much might as she's able to muster, panting in exertion. “You’re too heavy!” you pretend to gap at her, hand going to your chest as if offended.
“Well, I never!” you tease, wiggling closer to her. She just laughs.
"Mama, please.”
Taking pity on her, you roll off enough for her to sit up, giggling overtaking the small space once again as you both cuddle up together, her body pressed into your side, head on your chest as you settle back.
“Much better,” you hum, pressing a kiss to the crown of her head.
“Storytime,” she sings loudly and way off-key, making you cringe a bit, but laugh at her enthusiasm. “Three stories.” you snort.
“One.” you hum, reaching for your book- the worn leather exterior fraying, the golden embossed letters having long since faded, the single string to wrap it closed having been replaced many times.
“Two,” she bargains, pouting, trying her best to tempt you with the puppy eyes Nina had taught her. They don't tempt you in the slightest, but you can't help but to be amused.
“One, little one. And those eyes didn't work on me when Nina and I were younger, I don't know why she thought they'd work on me with you.” huffing in annoyance, she flops into your lap, very nearly knocking the book from your hand, her hair scattering amongst the pillows like a halo, her father’s eyes staring back up at you.
“Because I'm your baby?” she hums, a devilish smile overtaking her otherwise innocent features. Mischief dances in the shadows of her eyes, and you laugh.
“Ah, you are your father’s child. Good try, Mellie.” she just shrugs, shifting to get comfortable in her new position.
“It was worth a try,” she concedes, bright eyes peering up at you, waiting. You nod, stifling your laughter.
“Of course, now which story do you want?”
“The one about the princess on the run,” she beams, tugging the blanket you placed over her up to her chest. Nodding, you start flipping through the pages gently, careful not to disrupt the fragile stitching holding it together. The yellowing pages have long since begun to fray around the edges, ink starting to fade, but you knew the story by heart- you heard it enough. Memories of your mother whispering the words to you by candlelight to calm you as the war rages outside flashing behind your eyes as your fingers trace the large golden letter on the first page.
“Where to start,” you murmur, eyes flickering to the innocent ones looking back up at you, crinkled with a smile.
“With the princess,” she decides, snuggling in closer to you. She, too, has heard the story well enough to tell it by heart, whispered by candlelight to avoid disturbing her father hard at work in the next room over. You grin, flipping a few pages. She always did detest the exposition.
“Ah, here we are. The princess,” you begin, shifting to cuddle closer, getting comfortable. “Screams echo is waves, the silence that follows seeming deafening as the noise itself, voices rounding out, fading as if worn smooth into the night,” your voice is a little over a whisper, shadows dancing across your features, creating an almost like a warning. Amelia’s eyes are glued to your face, lips parted slightly in focus- as if it is the first time she's hearing the story. “The world settles amongst the trees, darkness sweeping across the land, suffocating the remnants of light from view, whispers of pain and anguish being carried on by the wind. For a time, nothing moves, little more than the hum of the bugs to keep the night company.” she giggles at that.
“Mommy, the princess,” she insists. You laugh softly, eyes softening as you gaze down at her. You don't need to look at the picture on the other side of the page to imagine it. The princess leaning against a tree, catching her breath, her hair wild and free.
“Patience, little one- I'm getting there.” you grin, turning back to the book, pretending to look over the page, confused. “Now where were we? Ah yes,” you tease. “The pit of despair.” Amelia snorts a laugh, whacking her hand against your arm.
“Silly! You've gone too far!” scoffing at yourself, you snicker.
“Oh my, silly me. So I have. Where was I?”
“Cloaked by the shadows,” she urges you, eyes narrowing at you. You nod knowingly, eyes crinkling a bit.
“Ah, yes. Right you are,” you hum, poking her nose before turning back to the book. “Cloaked by the shadows, the princess runs, stumbling through the underbrush and tripping over roots as branches tug and tear at her clothes, urging her to slow.”
You pause to take a breath, lifting the page to examine it thoughtfully- the flicker of the flame casting shadows over her likeness.
“Tugging her hood closer to her, she adjusts it, wrapping the cloth just so, as to hide everything but her eyes-”
Silent steps slow to a stop, balanced on the edge of the roof as eagle eyes scan for any movement. Melting into the shadows, Inej takes the quiet moment to readjust her hood. She tugs the fabric more comfortably up over her nose to mask the way her breath puffs in the early winter air, every inch of her cloaked in darkness- except her eyes.
You rest back, watching as Amelia’s eyes droop- fighting the smile that crosses your face as you continue. You close the book, now, letting it rest beside you as you spin the tale of fantastical beings- of pain, suffering, corruption, and an assassin. You pause, listening to her slow breathing. You almost melt into the pillows yourself, satisfied with her being long asleep. Until she speaks.
“You haven't finished,” she accuses, voice thick with sleep. Stifling a laugh, you look down at her, her brilliant eyes barely creaked open.
“Where was I?” you challenge, she frowns sleepily.
“The knight, tell me about the knight,” she insists, her words slurring as she fights the pull of the land of her dreams. You grin, nodding though you’re sure she can't see you.
“Tall and noble, the knight stands firm-” you whisper, fingers tracing over the book beside you, a comfort- a piece of your old life bleeding into your new reality. “His armor shines, reflecting the light of the fires surrounding him, glinting in warning as he bares his sword in defense-”
Moonlight glints off the smooth metal of Jesper’s revolvers, bright flashes lighting up the area for mere moments as he dodges behind another wall, guns spinning on his fingers with a grin. Across from him, Wylan is crouched in the shadows, waiting patiently for his signal.
“Now?” Jesper glances around the corner, lifting his hand slightly to indicate a pause. Silence rings out as the dust settles making the sharpshooter frown until a shot rings out, the bullet knocking his hat from his head.
“Saints,” Jesper hisses, ducking back once more, lurching for his hat, inspecting the hole mournfully. “My hat,” he complains. Wylan sighs.
“You’re lucky they’re not better shots, Jes. Now?” Jesper nods, huffing.
“Blow ‘em to bits,” shifting closer to his demolition expert, he steadies himself for the bang, shielding the smaller man before him with a smile. Wylan grins back up at him as he sets off his bomb. The bright light flickers around them as the shock wave shakes the foundation of the building, demolishing everything in its path- rubble and dust raining down on the pair, Jesper's jacket tugged up to keep them pretty well unscathed.
Again, there is silence, as Jesper shakes pieces of brick from his shoulders, shaking his head, tapping his ear to clear the ringing.
“Time to move,” he grunts, hoisting both him and Wylan to their feet as he peers around the corner again. This time, nothing moves. Nodding in satisfaction, he tugs the redhead out in front of him. “Go, you first,” Wylan gaps at him.
“Sacrificing me?” Jes scoffs.
“If they’re coming, they’re coming from that way,” he juts his thumb the other way. “And if they do, I'm the one who takes care of them- now get out of the line of fire, dumb ass, and move.” he is grinning, hand resting on the butt of his revolvers. Wylan nods.
You pause again, looking over her again. She lies motionless, her features smoothed with sleep, peace in the flutter of her eyes.
“The king,” she grumbles, not bothering to fight to open her eyes this time. Shaking your head at her stubbornness, you shift, adjusting the pillow behind your back, stroking her hair out of habit before leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead smiling gently.
“The king,” you agree. “A quiet man, his reputation larger than life. His resources are infinite, his people’s loyalty solid. He is stern, but fair- knowing all and seeing all.”
“Like magic,” she hums, a gentle smile tugging at her lips. You grin.
“Yes, quite like.”
“Jesper,” the hiss comes suddenly, breaking the silence that had surrounded them as they jogged along to the rendezvous point. Missing a beat in his step, Jesper very nearly trips, catching himself on the foundation of the statue, grouching at the black-clad man as he steps out of the shadows.
“Saints, Kaz- little more warning next time. You almost stopped my heart on that one.” Kaz’s eyebrow quirks a bit, glancing at Wylan.
“You’re late. Were you successful?” his voice is clipped, tight. Jesper nods, holding up the bag with a grin.
“You have to ask?” the look that crosses his boss's face was that of a tired parent. “Don't answer that.”
“Where’s your hat, Jes?” Inej hums, landing silently beside him, head tilted to the side curiously as she tugs her hood back to reveal her face. Wylan groans as Jesper makes the most pitiful whine, holding up his hat, finger poking out of the hole.
“Bastards SHOT it,” Kaz's nose flares a bit to bite back the smile creeping to his face. Inej on the other hand doesnt even try to hide her smile, patting his arm in sympathy. He gaps at his friends, head swiveling between the two.
“I can't believe you two,” rolling their eyes, they start back towards the slat.
“I'll buy you a new one,” inej promises.
“Come along, Jesper,” Kaz calls from the front. “We haven't all night.”
You wait in silence for a few moments, watching the shadows dance over her before you move to leave the tent. Pausing before you crawl out, you lean down to press one more kiss to her forehead.
“Goodnight, princess,” you murmur before shuffling out, standing slowly. Groaning softly, you stretch, wincing as your body pops. Moments later, you hear the door to the slat swing open, bouncing lightly against the downstairs wall as hushed voices urge others to lower their voice. You snort, shaking your head. Jesper.
Slowly, you move to meet your husband, smiling at the gentle thump of his cane against the floor as the boards creak weakly under his weight. You open the door to his study with a smile, watching as his rigid buisness facade melts away.
“Welcome home,” you hum, helping him out of his coat, leaving him in his button-down and vest. Sighing softly, he pauses in front of you, nose barely brushing your hairline as he takes a deep breath.
“Amelia?” he grumbles tiredly, looking down at you softly, the same calculating mischievousness dancing in his eyes as his daughters. Before you can answer, Jesper comes bounding up the stairs, half whispering something about Ice cream.
“Ice cream?” a small voice echoes from the tent as Amelia’s tiny body tumbles out after. Huffing a bit, you both shoot Jesper an exasperated look. He does well to look sheepish, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Sorry,” he grumbles, watching as she fumbles sleepily towards her parents.
“Papa,” she smiles sleepily, standing in front of Kaz, swaying on her feet a bit. Chuckling, he lowers himself slowly to meet her eyes, offering her a rare smile, saved mainly for her.
“Hello, Princess. Did we wake you? I'm sorry,” she just nods a bit, leaning on you for support, rubbing at her eyes.
“Mama just got done telling me a story,” he nods, looking up at you.
“She's a wonderful storyteller, I'm sure it was very good.” he praises, having to stand again as to not agitate his leg. She just nods.
“It was about princesses and knights and a king.” she rambles, waking more with every word. “Papa if I'm a princess, does that make you a king?” he pretends to contemplate it. Jesper tries not to roll his eyes. As if Kaz needs that thought in his head.
The man is the king of the barrel, he doesnt need an actual crown.
“I suppose that makes some semblance of sense,” he muses, ruffling his hair some, pausing slightly before patting her head softly. She beams up at him, eyes shining with validation.
“Does that make Uncle Jes a knight?” Kaz snorts.
“The royal donkey, perhaps.” Jesper gasps, hand resting on his chest in as much offense as he can muster.
“I am a stallion, thank you very much,” he gripes, earning a giggle from Amelia. Nina appears at the bottom of the stairs, calling up.
“All those coming down, Ice cream is served!” she looks to her parents, widening her eyes the best she can, jutting out her bottom lip, trying to make it quiver.
“Please?” Kaz groans, turning away from the look slightly, waving her over to Jesper.
“Fine. But then to bed.” with a grin, she is bounding towards Jesper, jumping onto his back, throwing her arm up to pretend she is riding a horse.
“Onward!” she cries. Jesper bounces along, doing his best impression of a horse as he very nearly gallops down the stairs as squealing laughter fills the air.
For a moment, silence engulfs the room. Glancing up at Kaz, you can't help but smile, finding his eyes already on you.
“You’re so weak,” you tease, earning a gentle bump of his shoulder as he groans.
“Dont remind me,” he huffs, shaking his head. Gently, he links his pinky with yours, giving it a light squeeze.
“My queen,” he bows slightly, motioning for you to walk out first. You giggle, shaking your head at his antics. Stepping out you wait for him at the top of the stairs, shivering as his fingers brush over the small of your back.
“My king.”
