Process Journal: Selection
This was a very tough yet rewarding week in our creative process. Based on the feedback and class poll, my team decided to move forward with the school farmers market concept. However, as we went from one processing method to the next (the Kepner-Tregoe method, sorting and, ranking method, polling, ranking and weighing, idea potpourri, etc.), we began to feel like the ideas was a dead end.
Rather than push on with a half-interesting idea, we all took a step back, re-evaluated our process and spoke our minds about the experience. This roadblock pushed the team to more attentive and open about their feelings and inner reflections on the idea and selection process. 
When we did speak more in depth, we found that we were all feeling a similar way about the idea, and eventually decided to take a few steps back and re-open the selection gates so that we could find an idea that resonated with all of us and made sense in the context of this project.
We did not lose much time or ground. The work we had done working out solutions for the school farmers market concept, as well as many of our other ideas came together at a certain point and synthesized into a more compact, dynamic and versatile solution to shifting consumer behavior towards food and plastic waste.
We decided to move forward with a mobile farmers market concept. This way, we could service schools with minimal interference from public school bureaucracies, and service a host of other market segments. We wouldn’t be bound to a certain location or any rigid plans. Better yet, our mobile nature could allow us to easily scale bigger, and use technology to build a loyal customer base, offer preordered groceries to customers, and reach many different locations/customer segments. We would also be able to reincorporate many of our food/plastic waste initiatives into this larger concept by selling everything in bulk, offering an array of reusable products, and incentivizing recycling/reusing of containers, among other things.
In the end we agreed on a strong basic concept that allowed us the freedom to implement a host of supplemental initiatives in addition to it. It is very rewarding and encouraging to overcome a collective creative block through collective cooperation, listening, openness and creativity. I have learned a lot and am grateful for my cooperative, centered, smart team!

Choosing a Solution
Onspyre got together this week (a few times!) and worked through our solution process in phases. The below is in reverse chronological order: the discussion at the bottom happened first, then we went off and worked on our Kepner-Tregoe analyses (just mine included, but @well-being-tech and @warren-usc have posted theirs), and finally narrowed to our solution outline, below. In the outline, N2H stands for our “nice to have” elements.

Incident & Problem management interview tips
Hello I have a 15 min screening interview for an incident and problem manager role and wondered if anyone had any tips to help me ace it? A bit about me: I have never worked as an incident or problem manager but I run the service desk at my current organisation so have lots of incident management experience. The problem management practice isn't very mature within my organisation but I have ran mini problem management workshops for the department to explain what a problem is, why it is important to manage it with various techniques such as Kepner Tregoe and 5 Whys I'm an ITIL MP and currently doing DITS to get SL so should be able to answer any questions related to the 34 practices with confidence My concern is the role is in a different industry (I have only ever worked in Broadcast media & this role is in the energy sector) although I am technical in the sense that I'm AWS, Microsoft & COMPTIA certified my knowledge is high level so I can translate technical issues to a non technical audience but cannot write code and have not worked as an engineer. Will this be an obstruction? Hopefully not as I'm a fairly good communicator and a good intermediary between the clever bods and customers Grateful for any advice Thanks

Selection
Selection between our top three choices was a long process, namely because of our top two choices. After we all agreed that we would not want to pursue the business model of advanced language-detection closed-captioning AI, we were left deciding between coming up with premier designs of a streaming service in a digital style guide to license out or coming up with a sort of all-in-one streaming service on our own platform.
To choose between these two, we used the Idea Potpourri technique, followed by the Kepner-Tregoe method our ideas. For Idea Potpourri, we combined the ideas of the digital style guide and our own platform into an all-in-one streaming platform with an “about us” tab on a website that explains the problems we’ve seen in the streaming industry and what our designs have attempted to fix, via a sort of style guide.
Using Kepner-Tregoe, we identified our top four concerns and then ranked them based on how important they were to us:
Accessibility concerns 9.25/10
Inconsistencies / different mental models 6.5 (score = average of our own rankings)
Chaotic design patterns 7.5
Navigation issues  8.75
From here, we decided on the objectives we would want our final business model to meet. We then used a spreadsheet to rank how each of our ideas crossed with our objectives, as can be seen in the screenshot below, eventually coming to the conclusion that making our own streaming platform was the best idea.

Unit 11: Selection
After the ideation phase, we came out with three top ideas: a style guide, AI for accessible features, and a streaming service that consolidates all streaming content into one place.
We employed two main methods to select our final idea: idea potpourri and the Kepner-Tregoe method.
For idea potpourri, we tried out combining a style guide with our streaming service idea. Combined, we would have a minimal "Style guide" in our about page that talks about our design decisions and why they are important for streaming services.
Now that we had four ideas, we used the Kepner-Tregoe method to make our selection. We were initially learning towards the fourth idea, but we wanted to systematically make a selection to ensure we were unbiased. We started by listing objectives:
- make streaming services as accessible as possible
- simplify the streaming experience
- make a happy user experience
- standardize the streaming experience
With these objectives and ideas we created a spreadsheet and ranked each cell 1-10. We then averaged all of our answers and summed each column up to have a score for each idea. Idea 3 (streaming service) ended up with the most points. We felt that this idea was the most surefire way to ensure accessibility standards are met and enforced, simplify and reconcile customer mental models, and overall create a joyful experience.
After narrowing down to this idea, we still felt like we had some reservations. It did not feel like the most feasible idea we had, and we were worried about securing partnerships with streaming services to host content on our own platform. We initially thought we would just redirect users to a streaming service once they have found the video they want to watch, but that prevents us from addressing accessibility issues with playback (e.g. subtitles, audio descriptions).
After discussing with Professor Siegel and filling out the business canvas we were able to address our feasibility concerns and move forward with our idea.

Creative Problem Solving: Selection
At our first group meeting on selection, we discussed our top three ideas and considered how we might approach picking one. We realized that we could combine certain aspects using the idea potpourri technique, and we ended up merging two of our ideas into a fourth one: creating our own app with the best possible accessibility features and usability, and then including an “about” page detailing all the noteworthy design decisions that we made as an educational resource. We felt that this could potentially make our service stand out from competitors as well.
We took a break after this first discussion to think over the possibilities individually and met again a couple of days later to do some more thorough analysis. We utilized a variation of the Kepner-Tregoe method for this and found that it was helpful in evaluating and ranking the ideas step-by-step in a quantitative way. First, we assessed our problem statement and highlighted the key concerns, after which we scored the importance of each concern on a scale from 1 to 10. The scores were averaged across the team.
• Inconsistencies / different mental models: 6.5 • Chaotic design patterns: 7.5 • Navigation issues: 8.75 • Accessibility concerns: 9.25
The next step was to come up with a list of objectives using these main concerns. We then scored each of our four ideas based on how well they addressed the issues, also using a scale of 1 to 10. We documented this process in a Google spreadsheet, and ultimately the idea that yielded the highest score was creating our own app that would act as a directory and a unified interface for users to access all their content across various streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, etc. Interestingly enough, our fourth option (the one that combined our own app with the style guide) scored lower than its simpler counterpart—perhaps a testament to the proverb that “less is more”.
Despite the obvious “winner” that resulted from this analysis, we didn’t immediately conclude the selection process. In particular, the style guide idea remained somewhat attractive to some of the team members. My own personal thoughts on the style guide were that, if implemented, a set of clearly defined standards would solve a lot of the issues we had identified, and it seemed like it would target the root of the problem rather than blanketing things with yet another service or interface. However, the challenge is that it’s conditional—if implemented. I had a hard time figuring out how we could convince media companies to adopt these standards, even if we set them.
We brought this concern, among others, to office hours, where Professor Siegel gave us some good advice about how to move forward, and we ultimately decided to drop the style guide idea and stick with creating our own service. We also took our time constraints into consideration and decided to table the idea of creating a sort of style guide inside the app, instead focusing on developing a sleek and accessible user interface.
