TC Energy Corp. says it has restarted the southern extension of its Keystone pipeline after repairing a Dec. 7 leak that led to the worst oil spill in the pipeline's history.

The Calgary-based company says it will operate the pipeline under plans approved by U.S. regulators, including additional safety measures such as reduced operating pressure.

TC Energy restarted most of the 4,324-kilometre Keystone pipeline system on Dec. 14, while the 154-km Cushing Extension, running from just south of Steele City, Nebraska to Cushing, Oklahoma, had remained shut following the leak.

The cause of the estimated 14,000-barrel spill, which eclipsed a 2017 6,600-barrel spill in North Dakota and a 2019 4,500-barrel spill in South Dakota, is still under investigation. [...]

March 11, 2024 — Appalachians Against Pipelines activists prevented drilling of Poor Mountain in Virginia for 8 hours as part of an effort to stop the Mountain Valley pipeline (MVP) project.

Mountain Valley Pipeline is a fracked gas pipeline that "stretches from the shale fields of so-called 'West Virginia' into central 'Virginia' with a possible extension into 'North Carolina.' The hazardous project will disrupt delicate ecosystems, harm communities, and increase international dependence on fossil fuels, pushing the planet further into climate chaos."

Activists face arrests and jail time trying prevent completion of MVP and the inevitable environmental disasters caused by pipelines like Keystone, which has had 23 spills since it began operating in 2010.

The operator of the Keystone Pipeline System, which carries a form of crude oil from Canada to multiple states for refining, said over the weekend that its largest breach yet has been contained for now.

The pipeline failure 3 miles east of Washington, Kansas, on Wednesday caused an estimated 14,000 barrels of crude, or 588,000 gallons of a form of crude known as tar sands oil, to spill into Mill Creek, a natural waterway, according to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration of the U.S. Transportation Department.

The administration has ordered the affected section of pipeline, about 160 miles north of Wichita, closed until corrective action can be completed.

TC Energy, the Canadian parent of day-to-day pipeline operator TC Oil, said in a statement Saturday that the spill was no longer moving downstream. It mobilized 250 crews to handle cleanup and has deployed booms and vacuum trucks to stop the oil, the company said.

The Environmental Protection Agency said in a statement Saturday, "The discharge has been contained, and no drinking water has been impacted."

The failure along a 96-mile segment in parts of Washington County, Kansas; Clay County, Kansas; and Jefferson County, Nebraska, renews concern over pipeline safety after the demise of the contentious Keystone XL pipeline project.

Canada-based TC Energy on Thursday estimated the spill on the Keystone system at about 14,000 barrels, or 588,000 gallons. It said the affected pipeline segment had been “isolated,” the oil had been contained at the site with booms, or barriers, and environmental monitoring had been set up, including around-the-clock air-quality monitoring. It did not say how the spill occurred.

After a drop in pressure on the pipeline that carries oil from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast, the company said it shut down its Keystone system Wednesday night. Oil spilled into a creek in Washington County, Kansas, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northwest of Kansas City.

Zack Pistora, a lobbyist for the Sierra Club in Kansas, noted the spill in his state was larger than all of the 22 previous spills combined on the Keystone pipeline, which began operations in 2010.

Despite that this is an article written for right wings, there’s one piece of information that it had no choice but disclose which is that the only worth while permanent jobs are about 50 after construction of the keystone xl pipeline.

Therefore, the only lucrative job creation part of the pipeline would be the construction. Unless america keeps building more keystone pipelines, it would only be an one time profit for the construction industry and lifetime of cost & maintenance for leaks to the environment.

Building something to be a perpetual cost to the environment and govt to monitor is nothing good to anyone with a common sense.
