i think the most painful part is that despite it all, most of our memories were happy.

she went to daycare with me, towards the end, before it was abruptly shut down. she was there for the tea parties. the pool days. the afternoon snacks.

we got to ride the bus together. we started going to my grandparents’ in the afternoons in eighth grade. we would make popcorn and douse it in spray butter and watch happy tree friends on youtube until her mom came to pick her up.

in ninth grade, we had our first class of the day together. we would scroll on blogging sites instead of doing our work. i clearly remember sitting in that classroom, in front of our computers, when she told me she was worried about getting pregnant for the first time, and we fretted over it together, wondering if we could use the school computers to google such scandalous things.

in tenth grade, we took a photography class together. he was there, too. but she and i got to be each other’s muses in our photos. i remember climbing in the giant drain pipe in the back of the school property together, looking for the perfect shot.

in eleventh grade, he broke up with her, right after prom. i was finally able to tell her everything. his attempts at me. the way he spoke to me. the way he had kissed me as soon as she went to fill up her water bottle, one day in the band hallway after school, the previous year. she cried and said she was sorry that i felt i couldn’t tell her. she said he was a pig, and she blocked his number. unfortunately for everyone, she had it memorized.

in twelfth grade, at the end of the school year, we went to the mexican restaurant in town. we had virgin daiquiris and talked about dumping my boyfriend, the cute boy i had met at my job at the grocery store. i backed into a trailer in my honda crv leaving that lunch date. i broke up with my high school boyfriend not long after.

we were roommates our freshman year of college. everything was great. until one day, she woke up sour; she wouldn’t talk to me while we got ready for class. she texted me when i was in my international relations class: “you didn’t tell me you kissed.” it was so out of the blue; why had he brought that up? i was so confused, because i did. i told her everything. i couldn’t understand why she was mad at me. maybe because she had to remember it again.

i went home to community college for a boy who would ultimately break my heart. she stayed at our school one more year before she made the decision to transfer to a college in another state hundreds of miles away. i told her it was a stupid idea; so expensive for a degree she didn’t need for that kind of work. selfishly, it was because i wanted her to stay (but i was right about that degree).

every year i visited her. as much as i could. i was a broke college student. i paid for my flights myself. i packed only what i could bring in a backpack. i couldn’t afford to bring more bags. i had a toothbrush at her place. i used her shower things because i couldn’t bring my own. she would get me into disney for free, most of the time. those visits were some of the highlights of that time in my life.

but those visits are also when he started to try me again, without me even noticing.

and that’s what hurts the most, still. i have all of these years of happy memories; overshadowed now, yes, but she knew the whole time. even if she tried to deny it, it was always there in the background. i have no doubt that all of these memories were ruined for her the day she was forced to face it.

i knew her through all of her phases; as kids. with braces. dying the underside of her hair blue. the heavy eyeliner. the pretty eye makeup she wore every day. her years at the ice cream stand. her brief dream of being a photography major. her time in florida, where she flourished. her time in connecticut, where she withered. i won’t know any more of her phases. she is frozen in time in my mind. i don’t know her anymore.

i know that i haunt her. i know that she probably thinks about it as often as i do. she could have cut out that cancer of a man so long ago. and then maybe her memories would be as happy as mine.

but does it really matter? it’s all tainted anyway. this is just nostalgia. and no matter how hard i wish or cry or scream or claw or beg or plead, i can’t go back. we can never go back.

How do you envision Nancy’s future?

we have Boarded The Vessel.

Nancy moves to boston for college. She goes to emerson and gets involved in radio. she ends up involved in a heavy rivalry between emerson's and harvard's radio stations. jonathan goes to nyu and they do long distance again, but this time its a lot healthier. they see each other at least once a month and try for more. post-vecna/UD shit i like to think that the govt paid them BIG BIG money to shut up (and as compensation). nancy uses her share to invest in real estate. she buys a small condo in connecticut and slowly flips it over the course of a few years. (this is where she and jonathan meet up a lot.) she enjoyed working on hop's cabin, and its a fun side gig for her. post-college she sells the place and uses the money to buy an apartment in new york. she and jonathan move in together, and eventually she flips it and they move closer into the city. nancy works as an investigative reporter for the NYTimes (and then AP for a minute before moving back to the Times). she wins a pulitzer in the late 90s for an exposé on a state senatorial bribery scandal, which was directly responsible for the defunding of DV/abuse shelters and eliminated pro-bono medical practices. jonathan does photojournalism for a bit, but finds his niche in arts photography. he and nancy have a kid when they're in their mid-thirties. a girl. nancy isn't the perfect mom, but she does everything she can to be what her mother couldn't. jonathan is a fantastic dad and a great partner, despite his insecurities. their kid grows up feeling loved. she likes her grandma joyce and her aunt holly best, but she guesses her parents are pretty cool too.

Interview with Mark C. Daniel

Mark C. Daniel recently released his new single "Lucky One"

STRATA: Your music seems to hold some vibe back to those Hall & Oates and Bryan Adams days. Is that the era your musical influences came from?

Mark C.Daniel: Thank you STRATA for your interest! Not necessarily.... coincidentally, my drummer Mickey Curry is the drummer for both Bryan Adams & Hall and Oates, lol .. I’m a 90’s kid so I was most impressionable during the grunge/90’s alternative rock era. I really don’t pull from one era in particular at this point or at any recent points in my life. In short .. I love great songs and passionate playing .. any era and any genre. 

STRATA: "Lucky One" video development has a theatrical feel to it. How did the idea for the video come about? How do you feel it fits the lyrical content of your song?

Mark C. Daniel: The video was development & choreographed by Alison Cook-Beatty and performed by her dance company Alison-Cook-Beatty Dance. I’ve known Alison ever since we were kids in grade school, we went to High School together followed by her attending Boston Conservatory while I attended Berklee College of Music, which are across the street from each other. I’ve wanted to work with Alison for ages and when I received the first mix of the song, I called her. I sent a copy and a few weeks later she invited me to a dance studio. I was absolutely stunned when she played the song and the dance started to take form. I then contacted an incredibly talented director I work with, Tim O’Hanlon and voila.. here we are! I’m forever grateful to Allison and her extraordinary dancers as well as Tim and his team. I’m overjoyed with the result! 

STRATA: How is the music scene where you perform most often?

Mark C. Daniel: Great!! There are many talented artists and musicians in Connecticut..full of inspiration !!

STRATA: Will rock and pop music always reach back to what it knows, or is rock possibly developing a new sound? 

Mark C. Daniel: good question .. I’m not very good at predicting the future however it would be nice to think all genres could continue an amalgamation toward something newer. Takes courage for artists to do this …Songs and songwriting are the vehicles. 

STRATA: What part do you think producers will continue to play in music development? 

Mark C. Daniel: depends on a genre.. some genre are highly dependent on Producers.. today, the term Producer could mean anything from “Big studio budget” Producer to “Bedroom, living in your parent’s house” Producer.. both of which can be highly successful both artistically and commercially. 

STRATA: Reading over your press, it seems your direction is to release new music about twice a year. Do you write and release music for yourself or for your listeners or for the sake of both?

Mark C. Daniel: Music like all the finest things in life is always best shared. It does indeed come from a personal space, even a narrative, but we as humans require “a witness” someone or “someone’s” to share it with. 

STRATA: For your listeners and your growing platform - what is Mark C. Daniel presenting in 2024?

Mark C. Daniel: the best songs I can write along with playing to serve the song… and perhaps a little “monkeying around”, Lol !
