Censored Chinese BLs I love for people who don't know what they are or want to find more.
Censored Chinese dramas refer to Chinese dramas that are based on gay source material and are adapted to screen, but due to strict restrictions in China, they must redact most of the gay interactions. Even so, Chinese productions work on a little budget and use workarounds to make the romance as clear as possible without getting taken off air. Some fail, some succeed. All of them make it pretty clear to viewers, though, that these characters are in love.
Also, for non Cdrama watchers, most Cdramas are LONG. I'm talking 30-45 minute episodes for 30 episodes on average, so if you want to start one get ready for an investment. There are shorter ones, but honestly, I think it's worth the investment.
Continue on for examples and recs.
The Untamed (2019)- The big boy. If anyone tells you they watch Chinese bromance, this one was likely their first. It is the most popular among these. It's on Netflix.
Word of Honor (2021) - Another popular one and this one got some of the most in your face gay shenanigans on screen. Also, one of their workarounds was having the actors mouth much gayer lines and dub it over (All Chinese audio is dubbed over in dramas). Maybe they just were at a good time period, maybe because the actors were so popular, maybe the censors were asleep, but we love her. Also, on Netflix.
Guardian (2018)- Another more popular one kinda makes a trifecta with the other two. This one got away with some good moments. I can only now find it on YouTube, but the audio sometimes gets cut off.
Killer and Healer (2021)- This one is a lot less popular than the first three. They got away with quite a bit but got even more cut out, but this one has its deleted scenes available to view online! Available on Viki and Youtube.
Winter Begonia (2020)- This one got a little bigger because of how artistic it is. It had a beautiful setting and costuming. They have a bit of a slow burn, but they definitely have their moments. Available on Viki.
S.C.I. Mystery (2018)- A household name purely because they got away with so much. Including a kiss disguised as CPR, sleeping in the same bed, etc. The budget is TINY, though, so if you can't handle everything looking like a set and poor graphics, this might not be for you. On Youtube.
Justice in the Dark (2023)- Not yet completed and has been on the back burner for a couple of years, but she's back baby, now airing in Japan. Pretty heavy on the gay, thus why they didn't pass censors after episode 8. I have no idea where to watch it. Fans are working on subbing.
Spirealm (2024)- Also one of the dramas that nearly didn't make it. Got put up, taken down, put back up on a different site. But she exists, and it is one of the gayest dramas on this list. I would say it beats out what Word of Honor got away with. On Viki.
Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty (2020)- This drama feels gay most of the time, straight for a short period of time, but they had nice moments, and they had a higher budget, directed by Jackie Chan, so you know the fighting is good. On Viki.
Advance Bravely (2017)- Started reading the book, but I have only seen clips of the show. It looks like it has potential in that older show, cheesy way, but they certainly got away with a lot because they were earlier in the timeline. On Viki and IQiyi.
Stand by Me (2023)- Haven't finished this one yet, but it is up there in chemistry. It was really hard to find, but it is on WeTV. No gifs unfortunately.
Honorable Mentions
Addicted (2016)- A canonically gay drama, the only canon gay drama to be made and released in China pre-ban. It is toxic, I warn you. It was made in 2016, prime toxic BL time. We must honor those who came before, though. It was canceled halfway through. Available on YouTube and Viki.
Meet You at the Blossom (2024)- Another canon BL, this one picked up in Thailand. The actors are Chinese, the language, and the backdrop. Everything behind the scenes is thai. It is also toxic, but less than Addicted, another win for Chinese BL, opening up possibilities.
The rest will not be based on gay source material but feel at the same level as the others on the list.
Mysterious Lotus Casebook (2023) - I feel that the new Chinese tactic to convey gay subtext and cover it up is to make everyone act equally romantic toward everyone, which in turn is creating polycules, which is lovely for me. This drama is no exception. Available on IQiyi.
Fangs of Fortune (2024) - A much larger and more complicated polycule complete with lesbians and straights. Available on IQiyi.
Silent Criminal (2020) - This one felt like it was supposed to be gay, and they tried to shove a female lead between them to diffuse the tension. Available on Viki and IQiyi.
Wuliang (2020) - I gotta be honest, when I first saw this movie, I didn't get the hype, but after some time I really appreciate the visuals and themes that have stuck with me, I think it was just too short. Unavailable legally without a vpn.
Yin Yang Master (2020) - This movie was very much an enemies to lovers sub plot with a fantastical main plot that looks beautiful. Available on Netflix.
Any Lost Tomb Adaptation (2015-2025) - The ships in this franchise span books, movies, shows, comics, etc. They are visible in any adaptation, so feel free to explore.
A League of Nobleman (2023) - This one is also a nice polycule opportunity. It feels lighter than some of the others on the list, but still very much a bromance. Available on Viki.
Under the Skin (2022) - This one makes me more unsure whether it was intended to even be a bromance at all, but by the second season they definitely blossomed into something beautiful and they are backdropped by some amazing and unique plots and cases. There are also some sweet shipping possibilities within, but I don't want to spoil. Available on Viki.
My Roommate is a Detective (2020) - Now this one was definitely meant to be a bromance, but also a straight romance. Unfortunately, the female lead drove me absolutely up the wall, then when they had another chance with the same two leads and director to do another drama called Checkmate, it was boring, so... start at your own peril and be warned, I am no women hater, she is just... you'll see.
I know of more, but these are the only ones I have at least seen enough to suggest (or not) to other people. I thought all this time spent on this media might as well be used somehow. Hopefully this helps you find a new drama or a new type of drama or dramas in general. Happy watching!

I just started rewatching Killer and Healer
and I CANT BELIEVE I FORGOT THE SECONDARY COUPLE!! I AM SO HYPE. I FORGOT THEY WERE IN THIS. THEYRE BOTH ACTORS I ADORE
And Ian Yi, who I've loved since Men with Sword (my favorite messy community theatre level drama)
In many way the setup of KaH reminds me slightly of Til Death Tears Us Apart (a drama I loved). Of course KaH is longer, and not so much old friends now on enemy sides, so much as an intense guy and a doctor who is intent to be kind instead of harmful. But like the aesthetics and multiple parties fighting.
Which reminds me I want to watch and finish Snowfall, the vampires the setting the aesthetic it is ALL DOWN MY ALLEY.

Luo Weizhao was determined to organize a proper date with Pei Su, but nothing went as planned.
Special guests: Chen Yuzhi, Jiang Yuelou, and Xiao Bai from "Killer and Healer" (because I just love them so much, I had to include them here, even if it’s just a small part).

✨ weekend wip exposure club ✨
rules: post 7 sentences/a snippet of an unfinished work
@hyperbolicgrinch @theotherwhybietoldmeso (Happy Saturday!)
This is from one of my new wips Touch Within the Abyss. I haven't written a Junchun fic in a while and oh boy oh boy am I excited
“What are you looking for?” he inquired. At his voice, the young man practically jumped out of his skin and turned to look at him, revealing milky white eyes. ‘Oh’ Zhan Junbai thought to himself as the young man let out a sharp breath. “You startled me” he scolded. Zhan Junbai chuckled softly. “Sorry about that” he apologized before he looked at him again. “What are you searching for? Can I help?” he inquired. The young man blinked before he turned back to where he was searching and motioned in front of him. “My cane. I tripped and my cane went flying and I can’t…” he started when Zhan Junbai hummed and nodded. “Say no more” he replied before he stepped out of the alley and looked around, soon noticing a white cane broken in two not too far from them. “Oh no” he murmured before he walked over to the broken cane and picked it up, staring at the broken pieces for a moment before he sighed softly and walked over to the young man, kneeling before him. “I’m sorry” he apologized. The young man frowned. “For what?” he asked. Zhan Junbai held out the cane to him. “It looks like your cane broke in the fall” he explained. The young man’s eyes widened and he hesitantly reached out, searching for his cane, and once his fingers touched one of the pieces, he let out a soft noise of despair. “No” he croaked before he hung his head. “How am I going to get home now?” he whimpered. Zhan Junbai hummed. “Well, I could take you, if you’d like” he offered. The young man lifted his head and looked at him in surprise. “You would?” he asked. Zhan Junbai nodded before he held out his hand, only to realize that it was still covered in blood, making his eyes widen before he quickly wiped the blood off as best he could onto his suit, which was almost just as bloody as his hand, before holding out his hand again.

15 Day BL Challenge - Day 4
Day 4: Fave Ship Dynamic
Since I can't choose one favorite dynamic, I'll allow myself to write a few:
EQUALITY in a relationship will always be my top priority, which I understand as a situation where no one is exploited, or led like a child in the relationship, or dominated, even if one of them is naturally dominant. To make it more complicated, I actually like relationships in which one is clearly more dominant, for example stronger physically, or in the hierarchy, is richer, has power, BUT NOT OVER THEIR LOVED ONE, is actually even dependent on him. The point is that both have the same power over each other, are equally dependent on each other, both support each other to the best of their abilities, no one gives more or less. It is ideal when the seamingly "weaker" one has even a slight advantage in the relationship, to make it more fair. A good example of this relationship is Hannibal or Nagron 😋 There are many BL series with equal characters, most of them will appear below (but I'll start with a gif of these guys, equal in everything, and that widening of Zhou Zi Shu's eyes at the sight of Wen Ke Xing is one of the best things in BLs I've ever seen 💖)
most often, equality in a relationship goes hand in hand with my second favorite dynamic: when both are mature. I LOVE it when a couple is made up of adults, mature people who know who they are, know that they are interested in each other and the only obstacles in their relationship are external. From BL series, these are: Laws of Attraction, Manner of Death, Jun & Jun (excellent examples 10/10) as well as The Untamed, Word of Honor, KinnPorsche, 4 Minutes, Our Dating Sim, To Sir, With Love. This equality and maturity can just as well appear in series with young characters as in The On1y One
my other favorite dynamic also goes hand in hand with equality: when both are smart, they are professionals in what they do, like in The Sign, Laws of Attraction, The On1y One, Be Loved In House: I Do, Jun & Jun (see the gif above) and of course The Untamed and Word of Honor (I can't help but mention Beyond Evil, The Devil Judge, Killer and Healer, not BLs we all know better 😎)
when both are good at communication, I love it when characters TALK to each other, even when they argue, as long as they COMMUNICATE
the best and the rarest: when they trust each other and believe in each other, that the other person will handle the truth, the problems, that they will help, that TOGETHER THEY WILL DEAL with whatever life throws at them, when they talk about what's going on in their lives including the bad stuff, no noble sacrifice and keeping the loved one in the dark "for their own good". It's very possible that in all the BLs I've watched there was a couple who was honest with each other from the beginning until the end, but I can't remember one now... (Beyond Evil, Love in Translation started doing it by the end)
but I also like it when someone in the couple is unhinged, crazy, like Sahashi in Cosmetic Playlover, or a himbo like Sprite in Twins, or a golden retriever type but a real one like in Sing My Crush, especially when the other one is a bit grumpy and gloomy, like in those series, I love it!
I also like calm, stoic, solid types, at the same time totally whipped for their loved ones 🥰 such as the characters played by Noh in Nitiman and Oh! My Sunshine Night. Special mention should be made of someone similar to this type, but also noble and old-fashioned in a charming way, like San from Century of Love, and the guys from To Sir, With Love

I realized I have never made a book post
I have read a couple Chinese novels (mostly BL), and I have started some more, so let's make a little propaganda post for Chinese novels. For drama watchers I'll put if they have a drama adaptation, but the original novels are usually pretty different.
The first and my absolute favorite will be Kaleidoscope of Death by Xi Zixu (Drama version: Spirealm). Kaleidoscope of Death is about a young man called Lin Qiushi who one day walks into his hallway and finds that it has turned into a hallway of doors that lead to different worlds with monsters.
This novel is phenomenal, it is scary, dark, funny, and so intriguing. The story and world building are so expansive and winding, that I feel I can't say much about it because every part of it is so fun to read for the first time. Every door is so unique and interesting to explore and see each mystery unravel. Also, the main couple has a fun flirty energy that is a nice break from the scares.
The second novel and my second favorite will be Silent Reading by Priest (Drama version: Justice in the Dark). Pei Su, who inherited his father's company after his father fell into a coma, has been intertwined with a cop named Luo Wenzhou ever since his mother was found dead when he was young. He has a gift for solving crimes, but his seeming lack of empathy has led Wenzhou to keep him at a distance.
This novel has a very dark energy that feels like every scene is set in the middle of the night; it's so macabre and moody. Each case is very intense and really sticks with you. The main characters are very entertaining to read about because they are competent and have a bit of a cat and mouse dynamic that is very funny to watch.
The third novel on the list will be Heaven Official's Blessing by MXTX (Not a drama but has an animated show by the same title). Heaven Official's Blessing is about a god named Xie Lian, who has been able to ascend to heaven three times. You will learn how ascension and the Chinese version of god's and what not as the novel continues. There are also ghosts, including the ghost king who seems interested in Xie Lian, and many gods seem to fear.
It is difficult to summarize this story as it is so expansive and interesting to read. The world is so well written, and the mystery unfolds in such a way that you can understand every step with the character. The characters are my favorite part of this story, Xie Lian has a beautiful spirit and is such a complex character. Hua Cheng is also incredibly entertaining and interesting to learn about, and also their relationship is beautiful.
The fourth novel is going to be Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by MXTX (Drama Version: The Untamed). Wei Wuxian died in front of the entire cultivation world 16 years ago and now a young man has decided to give up his body and soul so he can summon Wei Wuxian to get revenge for him. Follow Wuxian as he reunites with people from his life 16 years ago, including Lan Wangji who had a positive and negative relationship with Wuxian over the years, and unravels a mystery that reaches all the way to the past.
This novel is one of the best known and it certainly deserves all the love. The characters have so much depth, not just the mains, but any side character has a backstory and a clear morality. The story is very interesting, and it switches between the past and present beautifully and you never feel bored in either time. The couple is absolutely beautiful, and the slow burn holds your attention.
The fifth novel will be Thousand Autumns by Meng Xi Shi (No drama, but an animated show by the same title). Shen Qiao was once known as one of the strongest fighters in the Jianghu (martial arts centered society), but after a fight, he is thrown from a cliff and goes blind. He is found at the bottom of that cliff by a passing man named, Yan Wushi, one of the most powerful, evil men in the entire Jianghu, who seems to have taken an interest in him.
This novel is very intensely a Xianxia novel, meaning that it is going to be using a lot of martial arts fight scenes and Chinese specific powers and moves and what not that may be a bit hard to follow, but it is all worth it to see all that Shen Qiao sees and learns over the course of the story. The dynamic between the main characters is about Yan Wushi wanting to see what he can put Shen Qiao through to break his spirit, so you have been warned, their relationship is not light or kind for a lot of the novel because they are not in love for most of the novel.
The sixth novel is going to be Fourteenth Year of Chenghua by Meng Xi Shi (Drama Version: Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty). Tang Fan is a young lower rank court official that has a talent for solving cases and is often sought out for his skills. After a murder of an important official's son, Tang Fan meets Sui Zhou, a member of the Brocade Guard which operates directly under the emperor. After a tumultuous start, they begin to work together as a team to solve various cases throughout the country.
This novel is very fun to read. The cases are pretty simple, but fun because of the ancient setting that adds complications to solving each case due to propriety and jurisdiction and lack of scientific instruments. The main couple are very slow burn, but before they are ever saying I love you, they are incredibly kind and supportive of one another, and they create a very comforting dynamic built on trust.
The next few novels with be The Graverobber's Chronicles by Nan Pai San Shu (Drama Version: Lost Tomb). Wu Xie is the last descendent of a line of graverobbers, including his grandfather who wrote of all of his adventures in a journal that Wu Xie has come to possess after his death. That journal sparks an interest in Wu Xie despite his family's efforts at keeping him out of the family business.
These novels are expansive and pretty much every aspect of this world that Nan Pai San Shu has created has been explored. It is so obvious in this novel that the author loves this story and loves his characters. Every character has a strong personality and can inspire love and annoyance every time they are on the page. This novel is not a BL, but the relationships between the three main characters are amazing and their bond is beautiful to read.
I have also started but haven't finished a couple books that I still feel I could recommend (because I start a lot of things and finish a few).
Faraway Wanderers by Priest (Drama Version: Word of Honor). Zhou Zishu is an ex-assassin that has decided to end his life and just become a wanderer of this world until he succumbs to his death. Unfortunately, his plans are intruded upon by matters of the Jianghu and a man named Wen Kexing who has a mysterious past.
I started this novel a long time ago, so I have forgotten a lot of what I read, but the characters' dynamics stuck out to me because they were so fun to read, and they are so opposite that they butt heads constantly.
S.C.I Mystery by Er Ya (Drama Version: S.C.I Mystery). Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao are both detectives that are chosen to be in the Special Crime Investigation team because of their proficiency. For years these two have had a rivalry with one another, but they are forced to work together when strange crimes involving hypnosis have been occurring.
A lot of people have difficulty suspending their disbelief due to how average the novel is up until they introduce hypnosis then it gets kind of fantastical but still tries to be rooted in reality. I got used to it eventually, but it definitely gives you some whip lash. The characters are very nice though, the team is fun to watch, and our main characters are very good at their job and have a funny dynamic as they try to one up each other. Warning to any possible readers, the side couple is absolutely toxic and uncomfortable for a lot of readers.
Guardian by Priest (Drama Version: Guardian). Zhao Yunlan is part of the Special Investigations Department, which is a department built to catch creatures from the underworld that have escaped to the world. He soon meets a professor at an academy after a case who seems to have a strange connection to him.
I love this world, and it is so much more complicated than the drama, which can be a bit of whiplash for people who watched it first. This novel has a super fun dynamic between the main characters and makes sure you care about the side characters, while also building a very complicated backstory for them.
Winter Begonia by Shui Ru Tian Er (Drama Version: Winter Begonia). Shang Xirui is a phenomenal opera performer who meets Cheng Fengtai, a military man/business owner who has spent a lot of his time overseas. As the country is at war with the Japanese, the simple life of the opera will soon be overshadowed with the pain of war.
This novel is a love or hate read for a lot of people. For a warning, Cheng Fengtai is married to a woman, and though it was a different time and it isn't really a happy marriage, at the end of the day, his relationship with Xirui is cheating. This novel talks a lot about social niceties and the underbelly of the opera, especially during the Republican era. I haven't gotten far enough yet to really see when their relationship gets really serious, so I don't know their later dynamic.
Lord Seventh by Priest (No Drama). Prince Jing Beiyuan is in his seventh reincarnation of life after finding and failing to stay by his lovers' side in every reincarnation, but this incarnation is different. This reincarnation has put him in his first life again, he has a chance to live his first life again, but will he try again with the same man, or will he find a new love in a mysterious traveler that he never met the first time around.
This novel is LONG; it is very politically heavy and a little confusing honestly. The love is a SLOW burn because he is reincarnated into a young version of himself, so him and the love interest are both children, so he isn't going to fall in love until they are both adults and he can view him that way, which I didn't get to yet. It is also set in the same world and is set before Faraway Wanderers, so Zhou Zishu is there for a second and Prince Jin.
Case File Compendium by Meatbun (No Drama). He Yu is a young man with a special blood disease that causes some interesting symptoms. He is in love with Xie Xue, who happens to be the little sister of his psychiatrist from his youth, Xie Qingcheng, but Qingcheng knows the intricacies of He Yu's illness and he would never approve.
This is my first Meatbun novel and she is notorious for her intense and pretty toxic dynamics, but that's what you sign up for. This novel is a nice mystery, and his illness brings some sci fi aspects to the story because it isn't something real and it gives him a power that you will find out. The toxic specifics, if you want to know, are sexual assault (due to the illness for the most part) and homophobia from both main characters. No hate crimes or anything, but they are both grossed out by gay people. (Obviously this will have to eventually change.)
The last novel on the list, I haven't been able to find a complete translation anywhere, but it is Killer and Healer by Jianghai Ji Yusheng (Drama Version: Killer and Healer). Chen Yuzhi is a doctor who gets caught up in a gang fight on his way home, getting him swept to jail by a brutal tough on Opium cop, Jiang Yuelou. During his time in jail, his little sister is kidnapped, pulling Yuzhi into the criminal underworld.
Chen Yuzhi and Jiang Yuelou relationship is beautiful and supportive despite their rough start. Though Jiang Yuelou is very angry and complicated, he is very soft hearted as well and they create a lovely dynamic. The backdrop of the Opium wars in republican China gives it a very noir vibe and the mystery unravels slowly piece by piece.

If you want to know if you like him or not, you have to walk closer to him. Then, try touching him. After you touch him, if you feel your heart beating faster than usual, that's what's called love.
