“Are you really gonna go through with this, Elfilin? You know it’s not too late to back out…”
The stage is set for chaos as Magolor takes their game of “truth or dare” to new heights. Elfilin, eager to impress his new best friend, gladly accepts Magolor's challenge, while Bandana Waddle Dee mulls over every possible thing that could go wrong. Kirby just wants everyone to have fun but he’s learning the hard way that “fun” means something different for everyone. The pressure to please his friends begins to take a toll on the pink puffball. Will Magolor’s game bring the 4 friends together once and for all or will it blow up in his face like all his other “big ideas” The adventure of Kirby, Bandana Waddle Dee, Elfilin and Magolor continue in Kirby’s Surprise Sleepover Adventure when Chapter Seven: Midnight Mishaps arrives Spring 2024! Kirby’s Surprise Sleepover Adventure!
Chapter Six: Truth or Dare!
。°✩ ⋆⁺。˚⋆˙‧₊✩₊‧˙⋆˚。⁺⋆ ✩°。⋆ ⋆。°✩ ⋆⁺。˚⋆˙‧₊✩₊‧˙⋆˚。⁺⋆ ✩°。
With the four friends now inside Kirby’s house after their outdoor activities, Magolor took the center of the room. He seemed very eager to begin the game. He clapped his hands with glee and bounced up and down.
“Well, Magolor… Let’s hear all about this exciting game!” Kirby said enthusiastically as he watched him pace about.
“Ooohh, you’ll like this one! It’s a classic.” Magolor was beaming with excitement as he continued to smile and clap.
Bandana Waddle Dee felt himself growing more nervous about this “game” knowing all too well that Magolor could be plotting something devious once again. In spite of everything that happened earlier, he was still in high spirits.
“I’ll explain the rules! It’s quite simple actually.” He began.
“When it is your turn, you will choose one of us to pick ‘truth or dare’. If they choose ‘truth’ well, they’ll have to tell you a secret! Heehee!! But if they choose ‘dare’…” Magolor giggled devilishly.
“Then they’ll have to do whatever you say! If they refuse, well…they lose! Simple as that! Ready to begin?” Magolor cupped his hands together and nodded his head in his trademark fashion.
“Since Kirby is the hosting this fantastic get-together, and it is his house, he’ll go first!”
“Me, really!? I get to go first!?” Kirby marveled, his eyes twinkling like the stars of Dream Land themselves.
“That’s right, Kirby! Go ahead, choose one of us!” Said Magolor as he sat down alongside Bandana Waddle Dee and Elfilin. The three of them, all eager to be chosen by Kirby stood tall in their seats and awaited his decision anxiously.
Kirby looked between his three friends and contemplated the decision. He turned his attention to Bandana Waddle Dee and smiled.
“Let’s see…” Kirby pointed to his quiet, blue scarfed companion.
“Bandana Waddle Dee! I choose you! Truth or dare!”
“Oh, wow, me!?” Bandana Waddle Dee cried out anxiously, perking up at the sound of his name.
“Yeah, you! Truth or dare!”
Bandana Waddle Dee felt slightly caught off guard. He glanced around the room nervously.
“I just pick one?…Oh, geez…Well…”
Truth…or dare? Oh, I definitely don’t want Magolor to hear any of my secrets! …Kirby wouldn’t make me do anything too drastic… I should be safe to pick dare with him, right? …
“Okay, Kirby! I choose…dare!”
Magolor instantly lit up with joy at the sound of those words.
“Good choice, my friend!” He cheered, clapping his hands happily. Bandana Waddle Dee sighed in anticipation of what could happen to him now.
Kirby took a look around his messy house pondering on what he could dare his friend to do. The puffball was deep in thought for several minutes before a big smile grew on his face. Finally, the perfect thought had struck him.
“Hmm… Oh, I know!! Bandana Waddle Dee, I dare you to go find me a piece of cake!” He said while rubbing his round, pink belly.
Magolor seemed disappointed immediately at Kirby’s request while Bandana Waddle Dee appeared to be delighted by the idea.
“That’s it!? All right then! I’m on it, Kirby!” Just as Bandana Waddle Dee got up and prepared to fetch Kirby his dessert, he was stopped by Magolor who used his dimensional vanish to appear in front of him, blocking his way.
“Woah, woah, woah- Wait just a minute. Kirby, this is truth or dare. Remember, he has to do whatever you say!” Magolor shot an intense, almost threatening look to Bandana Waddle Dee.
“Yeah, I know that! I want cake, I’m hungry!” Kirby replied as he continued to rub his once again empty stomach.
“Sure, Kirby. But cake? That’s just too easy. You gotta think bigger than that!” Magolor insisted, his eyes growing wide with excitement.
“Hey! Knock it off, Magolor! Wait your turn!” Bandana Waddle Dee barked angrily at him.
Magolor ignored his remark and continued on.
“Kirby, why settle for a simple piece of cake? How about…”
Magolor giggled and slowly floated towards the center of the room.
“How about…You dare him to… fetch you an exotic dessert from another dimension?” Magolor proposed, his voice growing louder with every word.
“WHAT!? How the heck am I supposed to do that!?” Bandana Waddle Dee shouted in protest.
“It’s quite simple, really. Heehee…”
Magolor raised his hands into the air. The lights in the room began to flicker and the ground trembled underneath them. Above Magolor a small tear started to appear in the air. Kirby, Bandana Waddle Dee and Elfilin watched in shock and confusion as it grew bigger and bigger. It became so big that it caused heavy winds to form, sending what Kirby had around the room flying all over the place. Magolor cackled as the ripple grew bigger and bigger until it finally turned into a dark purple, star shaped black hole. The room began to descend into utter chaos as Kirby, Elfilin and Bandana Waddle Dee all clung on tightly to whatever they could find to protect themselves from being sucked up into it.
“MAGOLOR WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” Kirby shouted, but to no avail as the sound of the room being ripped apart by the black hole was overpowering his cries.
Kirby's refrigerator and sofa were sucked up into the unforgiving vortex Magolor created, with even more of his stuff after that. Nothing and no one in the room was safe from the power of this black hole.
As Elfilin stared into the black hole, something about it began to feel familiar. He observed it carefully and finally realized that he had seen it before.
Say…This looks just like that black hole I saw earlier today in the village when I was with Magolor…He… He can summon these things whenever he wants!? Was he the one who did that!? That would mean…-
“MAGOLOR!!!”
Elfilin’s train of thought was interrupted by Kirby’s panicked shouts. Magolor however, couldn’t be happier as he smiled and cackled away like a supervillain amidst this pandemonium that he had caused. He finally took note of Kirby’s distress and gave him a reassuring nod.
“Oh, Kirby, don’t be so dramatic. I know what I’m doing.” He said with a wink.
The black hole sucked away both Bandana Waddle Dee and Magolor’s sleeping bags along with more of Kirby’s things.
“Hey!! My sleeping bag! Kirby, do something! “Bandana Waddle Dee yelled.
He held onto the doorknob of Kirby’s front door tightly but could feel himself slipping. The black hole's power was becoming too much for him to fend off. Magolor then floated over towards Bandana Waddle Dee. Not affected by the black hole’s power at all, he clapped his hands with a cheeky smirk across his face.
“Alright, Bandana Waddle Dee! It’s time to get Kirby that piece of cake!”
Bandana Waddle Dee felt a surge of panic growing inside him.
“What!? Are you CRAZY!? I’m not going in there!” He yelled angrily as he continued to hold on for dear life.
“You have to, it’s the rules!” Magolor snickered.
“No! I’m done playing this stupid game!”
“What? So, you’re gonna give up, just like that?”
Bandana Waddle Dee gulped nervously and stared into the depths of the black hole. He stomach twisted at the thought of getting sucked into it.
“What’s gonna happen if I go in there?”
“Well…There is only one way to find out!”
Magolor quickly dimensional vanished behind Bandana Waddle Dee and with one swift push, sent him flying into the black hole.
“KIRBYYYY!!” He yelled as he spiraled into the dark abyss.
His shouts for help got quieter and quieter as the black hole swallowed him up. After a few seconds the gale force winds came to an end and black hole finally dissipated. What remained inside Kirby’s house afterwards was completely strewn all over the room. Finally able to let go, Elfilin watched as Kirby angrily approached Magolor.
“WHAT DID YOU DO THAT FOR, MAGOLOR!?WHERE DID BANDANA WADDLE DEE GO?!” He yelled in a panicked frenzy.
“Relax, Kirby. I didn’t send him anywhere dangerous, in fact, I sent him somewhere he would probably enjoy very much! Wouldn’t surprise me if he decided to stay there forever.”
“BRING HIM BACK NOW !!!”
“Kirby, he’s going to need some time to find that precious piece of cake you wanted so badly.”
“NOW!” Kirby shouted furiously.
Magolor scoffed and rolled his eyes. He sighed and floated back up to the center of the room once more.
“Ohhh, fine! But don’t blame me if he comes back empty-handed!”
Magolor once again rose his hands up high in the air and like before, summoned another black hole. But this time, instead of sucking up what remained of Kirby and his home, it spit out everything it had sucked up earlier, from Bandana Waddle Dee’s sleeping bag to Kirby’s furniture and belongings. Finally, out came Bandana Waddle Dee tumbling to the floor. There wasn’t a scratch on him but he seemed to be quite shaken up from the ordeal. Magolor slowly approached him and snickered.
“Well, it looks like you didn’t find that piece of cake after all. Looks like you lose! Hehehehe…”
Bandana Waddle Dee’s face turned bright red. He stood up and angrily stomped over to Kirby and pointed over to Magolor.
“That’s it, Kirby! Now, it’s my turn! I dare you to make Magolor go home!!”
“Hey, that’s not how you play the game!” Magolor yelled, flailing his hands about.
“Either he goes, or I go!! He’s done nothing but pick on me since the moment he got here! I’ve had enough!”
Kirby nodded and turned to Magolor sternly. Elfilin hurried over to Bandana Waddle Dee happy to see his friend was alright.
“Bandana Waddle Dee!” He cheered as the two of them hugged each other tightly. Meanwhile, Kirby still furious over Magolor’s antics once again, shook his head with disdain.
“Magolor… Listen, I’m really sorry, but you’re going to have to go. What you did to Bandana Waddle Dee was too far!”
“Y-You’re kicking me out?!” Magolor’s laughter quickly stopped, and a look of deep concern grew on his face. Elfilin too, glanced over at them, expressing some worry at Kirby’s remarks.
“We tried to give you a chance but if you can’t play nice then you can’t stay.”
“But…But Kirby!… I was just getting him back for what he did to me!” Magolor pleaded as he frantically grabbed Kirby’s arm tightly.
“Getting him back??” Kirby frowned.
“That’s right! Remember earlier? He pushed me into that lake! You should have seen the look in his eye!”
Bandana Waddle Dee scowled with disgust and stormed over to them nearly bursting with rage.
“He started it Kirby, you should have heard the things he said to me!”
Magolor gasped at his words and looked at a Kirby with sad eyes.
“Do you hear this?! He’s berating me once again! He’s so cruel!” Magolor whimpered, desperately clinging to Kirby like he was a lost child.
Elfilin found himself feeling conflicted about all of this. Of course, he cared about Magolor, but he was finally starting to see the other side of him that he had been so ostensibly warned about. The black hole …Magolor had summoned it all along. Could he really be the “liar and a wizard” that Bandana Waddle Dee described him as? As much as Elfilin wanted to have faith, Magolor’s flaws were becoming increasingly evident, and he was starting to see for himself why he seems to clash with a lot of the folks around town. Bandana Waddle Dee in particular. It was rather perplexing to see two of Kirby’s closest friends butt heads so much. He wasn’t sure if there was anything he could do to end this fighting between the two of them. He watched from the side as they continued their dispute.
“Kirby, this hooligan is just trying to get rid of me again! Just ignore him and move on!”
“Magolor, look at what that black hole of yours did to my house!” Kirby pointed towards the tumultuous scene caused by Magolor’s antics.
“It’s gonna take us all night to clean this up! I’m sorry… But you really are going to have to go.”
Magolor tightened his grip on Kirby’s arm and looked up at him with big eyes.
“You know I was just kidding around! That’s what friends do, remember?” Magolor pleaded.
Elfilin watched as Kirby began to escort Magolor out. Bandana Waddle Dee watched from the side with a smirk on his face. Elfilin quickly flew over to him.
“Please don’t let Kirby kick Magolor out!” He whispered loudly.
“Why do you want him here anyway? He’s a bully, Elfilin. Why can’t you see that?”
“…Magolor is my friend! Just like you are, Bandana Waddle Dee! Listen…I know what he did wasn’t very nice, he was just having fun! He wouldn’t do anything to hurt you! Trust me!”
“Fun!? You saw what he did Elfilin! He sent me to Another Dimension!!”
“I…I didn’t know he was capable of doing something like that.” Elfilin couldn’t get the image of Magolor conjuring up the black hole out of his mind.
“Well, he is! You saw it yourself, Elfilin! Now do you believe me?”
“Bandana Waddle Dee…I…I know Magolor seems to be giving you a hard time, but… he mean well! Besides, you heard him, right? He was just playing around!” Elfilin affirmed, hoping to reassure his dejected friend.
Bandana Waddle Dee shook his head and frowned.
“You know, you’re starting to sound just like him…” he mumbled.
Elfilin panicked for a moment as Magolor was nearly out the door at this point. He found himself feeling torn between the two of them but couldn’t bear to make a choice. Whatever Elfilin could do, he had to do it fast before Magolor was sent packing. Knowing what had to be done Elfilin sighed deeply and hoped that it would work.
Oh, Bandana Waddle Dee… please forgive me for this!
“Listen! I…uh, I wasn’t supposed to say anything but…but Magolor…H-He told me that he’s sorry about what he said to you earlier! He feels really bad about the whole thing!” Elfilin went on.
“Magolor is… sorry?” Bandana Waddle Dee remained skeptical but kept listening.
“I-It’s true! Really! He told me himself!…He wanted to tell you but he was…afraid...” Elfilin nodded, knowing that Magolor said no such thing.
“Why would Magolor be afraid of me?”
“Well…because…” Elfilin stammered.
“He just…really wants to be your friend!…He wants all of us to be friends!”
“Did Magolor put you up to this?”
“WHAT!? N-no! I- He told me he was just…waiting for… you know, the right time to say it to you himself! Yeah! H-he said something about… doing that after the game.” Elfilin stuttered.
Bandana Waddle Dee looked curiously at Elfilin. Something didn’t feel quite right about this story.
“…Are you sure, Elfilin?…”
“Of course, I am! I would…never…lie to you…”
Elfilin looked at him with big, endearing eyes hoping he could find it in his heart to forgive Magolor one last time. Bandana Waddle Dee sighed and shook his head.
“Alright then…I guess I believe you… I know you would never lie the way he does.…”
“Elfilin…Please don’t let his bad habits rub off on you. Don’t become like him. A lying, good-for-nothing traitor.”
Those words stabbed Elfilin like a knife. As much as it hurt to tell a lie to his friend Elfilin was willing to take that risk to keep the party going.
“Hehehe…N-No way! You don’t need to worry about me, Bandana Waddle Dee!”
“I’ll tell Kirby Magolor can stay. But I’m doing this for you! Not for him.”
Elfilin smiled and sighed with relief. He wasn’t nearly as good at lying as Magolor was, but his ruse seemed to do the trick.
I…I’ll apologize and tell him the truth after the game!… Maybe this will all blow over and by tonight things will be better than ever! Just try to stay positive Elfilin… It was just a little white lie! Nothing more!
Meanwhile, Magolor was still fighting to keep Kirby from kicking him out. Magolor stood in front of the door blocking Kirby from getting any closer to it as he continued to plea his case. Bandana Waddle Dee hurried over to them.
“Kirby, wait!” He called out.
Both Kirby and Magolor directed their full attention to him.
“I was thinking… Maybe Magolor doesn’t have to go… If he really means he’s sorry then… Maybe he can stay…”
Magolor’s face lit up almost instantly. He was barely able to contain his excitement as he quickly dashed over to Bandana Waddle Dee’s side.
“Of course, I’m sorry! I would never dream of hurting any of my friends!” He said, his hands clasped together tightly. He brushed some dust off of Bandana Waddle Dee.
“I’m all right. It was nothing really, I’m fine.” Bandana Waddle Dee blushed and looked away nervously as Magolor continued to brush excess dust off him.
“Really, I’m fine! You can stop now!” He said, slightly raising his voice.
“I know things got off to a rough start but remember, Elfilin doesn’t get to come here that often, so I want to make sure he has a really good time! Let’s all try to get along! No more black holes and no more arguing okay?”
“Of course, Kirby! You have my word.” Magolor stated with a nod.
“Bandana Waddle Dee, are you sure you’re alright?”
“Yeah, Kirby I’m tough, I can handle it. I wasn’t there for very long, anyway.”
“See, Kirby? I told you he’d be just fine! Give your pal some credit! Perhaps I did get a bit carried away and for that, I do apologize. I promise I’ll try to tone things down a bit from here on out.” Magolor smirked. As they prepared to head back, Magolor extended his hand out to Bandana Waddle Dee.
“Nothing good comes of fighting. Let’s start over. Truce?” He said smiling at him from under his hooded scarf.
Bandana Waddle Dee stared at Magolor unsure if he was being sincere or if it was all just an act once again. His kindness towards him never felt genuine but for Elfilin’s sake he needed to give him the benefit of the doubt. They may never be the best of friends, but they can at least be accepting of one another. Bandana Waddle Dee accepted Magolor’s handshake with a reluctant smile.
“Perfect!” Magolor beamed. He clutched Bandana Waddle Dee’s hand and headed back over to the where they started. Magolor clapped with delight as his crazed laughter filled the room.
“Wow!! What an exciting start to the game, huh? How about that? Alright then, Bandana Waddle Dee and Kirby…you both lose!” Magolor proclaimed, snickering.
“What!? We lost!?” They both cried in unison.
“That’s right! Bandana Waddle Dee failed to retrieve a piece of cake and you didn’t send me home as he requested which means you didn’t fulfill the requirements of the dare, therefore… you both lose! Sorry! Rules are rules! Heehee..”
“Well… I guess you’re right Magolor! Those are the rules! Looks like we’re out!” Kirby replied, nodding in agreement. Bandana Waddle Dee exhaled deeply, relieved to be freed from Magolor’s game.
“That’s too bad. Looks like it’s just you and me, Little Dude!” Elfilin perked up as Magolor gave him his full attention.
“Well, go on! It’s your turn!” He said smiling.
With Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee out, he had only Magolor to ask. He grew anxious as he still felt slightly intimidated by him and wasn’t entirely sure if he was capable of challenging Magolor at this kind of game.
“Alright, Magolor…truth or dare!”
“You know what? I think I’ll shake things up a bit! I choose…truth!”
Elfilin was taken aback that Magolor would choose truth over a dare. He assumed Magolor would welcome a challenge. Elfilin realized this was a golden opportunity. A chance to get the answers he’s been seeking since the two of them met today. Elfilin had a torrent of questions swimming in his mind but he knew he had to ask the right one. The perfect question to finally get the truth straight from Magolor himself.
“Alright then, Magolor…Is it true…” Elfilin gulped anxiously, unsure if he was brave enough to ask such a bold question. It was now or never.
“Is it true that… you once betrayed Kirby?”
Everyone went dead silent as if the air were just sucked out of the room. Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee exchanged shocked glances. Magolor’s smile vanished instantly. His ears went limp as he looked down sadly to the floor.
“Well…” He stated with a sigh.
“I suppose no one is safe from their past, are they?”
Kirby gasped and frantically waved his hands in the air.
“Ohhhhh! We really don’t have to talk about that! Elfilin, why don’t you ask him something else?” Kirby asked anxiously.
“It’s alright, Kirby. He deserves to know the truth…It’s not like I could keep it a secret forever…” Magolor stated calmly in contrast to Kirby’s panic.
“Are you sure you want to talk about…that?”
“In fact, I’d be happy to tell the Little Dude all about it.” Magolor slowly floated up overhead everyone. Elfilin watched with intrigue.
“So…You want to know what really happened, huh? Fine. Let me explain everything…”
Magolor turned his back to them and looked out the window into the sky. He caught a glimpse of a shining star’s light from the distance and smiled.
“You see, Little Dude. Much like yourself, I too, come from a distant planet, all the way from another dimension. It’s super far away. Have you ever heard of a place called Halcandra?”
“Halcandra?”
“That’s right! Halcandra was my home for a long time. A…really long time.” Magolor mumbled. He turned back around and began to pace about the room.
“Halcandra was…well, it was kind of like your home, Little Dude. Abandoned… Forgotten… It was once a thriving community full of brilliant minds and advanced technology unlike anything you’ve ever seen! …But that was a long time ago. These days, everything and everyone was gone. Well, everyone except me, that is.”
Elfilin leaned in closer with big, open ears and continued to listen as he found himself already captivated by Magolor’s words.
“It was just me, all by myself on that big, empty planet. I didn’t have any friends of my own… The days were long. It was lonely and also got pretty boring. What’s a guy to do with all that time?…”
Bandana Waddle Dee sunk his head down low.
Enough with the sob story, just get to the part where you ruined everything!!
“One day I stumbled upon this amazing place! It was a little old and worn down of course, but inside were hundreds, even thousands of books as far as the eye could see. From that day on, I spent most of my time reading every single book I could get my hands on.”
“Wow! What kind of books did they have on Halcandra?” Elfilin asked.
“Everything! I read books that told stories of adventure, friendship, tragedy…even romance.” Magolor said slightly blushing.
“I learned a lot about the universe! I learned about ancient civilizations, cutting edge technologies and powerful, cosmic beings from across the galaxies… There was a whole Universe out there just waiting to be explored. I couldn’t sit idly by any longer. Somehow, I was going to get off that wretched wasteland of a planet and see what the Universe had to offer! I…I read about a mysterious possibly even sentient ship somewhere on the planet…And by some stroke of luck, I found it! It was completely destroyed. You couldn’t even open the doors. It took a little while but with the knowledge I gained from my studies, I was able to repair it back to flying shape!”
“Wow, you actually have a real spaceship, that you fixed up all by yourself?” Elfilin said, his eyes shining with wonder.
“I sure do! The Lor Starcutter! I’ll have to Take you for a spin around the universe sometime!” Magolor smiled at Elfilin for a brief moment before his expression grew more somber.
“Well… Around that same time was when I had read about…” Magolor paused for a moment. His voice began to tremble as it became clear that what he was about to discuss was going to be difficult for him.
“Something so evil…I-I won’t even speak its name. This thing… this… horrible thing… It was rumored that anyone who took control of it could obtain… limitless power. After being alone for as long as I was… It was hard to resist the temptation. I had to see it for myself…” Magolor’s quiet voice grew more solemn as he went on.
"So, I took my newly repaired Starcutter to the rumored location. It took quite a bit of searching, but I found it! Unfortunately for me, it was being protected by a vicious Dragon named Landia. I foolishly attempted to take it from them myself and…failed. I narrowly escaped with my life. That's when I remembered..."
Magolor turned to Kirby with his signature smile. That familiar warm, friendliness that was always in his voice had returned.
“During my travels, I heard many stories about the legendary Kirby of the Stars! The hungry hero of Popstar who is always willing to help out a stranger in need. With that in mind, I made a last-ditch effort by fleeing to Planet Popstar in hopes of finding this Kirby to help me with my efforts. It took everything the Lor had but we made it to Popstar… Not in one piece of course! Thanks to my…crash landing it didn’t take Kirby long at all to find me! And the rumors were true! You truly lived up to your reputation! Heehee! Kirby agreed to help me, a complete stranger. No questions asked! It was almost too good to be true. With the help of Kirby and his friends, the Lor was fixed once again. When we all first met I promised them a trip to Halcandra once the Lor was repaired. I kept my word and took them there. But… not for a fun trip to see my home like I led them to believe. No… Once we arrived, I convinced Kirby that the Dragon guarding that horrible thing stole it from me. Kirby bravely took on the challenge and as expected, took them down with ease.” Magolor nodded, pondering the memory. As he loomed above the three of his friends, cast in a dark, almost ominous shadow. The warmth left his voice almost as quickly as it came back.
“And there it was. Limitless power. Right at my grasp. At that moment… Everything I had ever cared about before didn’t matter anymore. All I cared about was the power…that damn power. Nothing else mattered. I had become obsessed with the idea of being some kind of all-powerful being just like the ones I read about in all those stories. I lost all sight of who I was. That thing indeed gave me the power I craved, yes. But at a heavy, heavy cost. I became shrouded by the darkness of my own heart. I turned into someone I didn’t recognize. That thing, when it takes control of you, it warps your mind. No longer was I that wide eyed wanderer from Halcandra who craved knowledge and companionship. I became… a lying, backstabbing, traitor. Nothing more than a monster who betrayed the kindness of his friends. After I tricked Kirby into helping me achieve my ultimate goal… I abandoned them and set my sights for Planet Popstar to begin my conquest as Overlord of the Universe.”
“You wanted to be an Overlord!?” Elfilin exclaimed in complete shock.
“Sounds silly, doesn’t it? When I finally had all that power… I thought I would be the one calling the shots, but I was wrong. I was under its control all along. I wanted that power so badly that I was prepared to destroy anything or anyone who dared to stand in my way. Even Kirby.”
“You…fought Kirby. Do you… remember it?” Elfilin asked.
“Oh, of course I do! He was quite the formidable foe…heehee! Like a fool, I thought I stood a chance against him in battle. Even with all that power it still wasn’t enough to come out on top. Perhaps my own stupidity was to blame, I mean, who would be foolish enough to believe they could defeat the great Kirby of the Stars?…” Magolor laughed a little then sighed deeply.
“That day is hard to forget, but… There is one instance from our encounter that…I don’t remember at all…”
Magolor took a moment to look around the room and noticed that a lone red apple from earlier was still on the ground nearby. He slowly floated over and picked it up. He held it in his hands and observed it closely, his eyes growing increasingly more sad as he kept staring at it.
“At some point during the battle things took a…drastic turn for the worse.” Magolor continued, clutching the apple tightly.
“I had come to realize that this power… It wasn’t what I wanted anymore. I just… wasn’t ready for it. But it was too late. That power…that darkness… It…It consumed me completely. The Magolor that Kirby had come to know…was gone. What remained was just…a sad…hollow shell of what I once was, leaving my soul trapped inside with nothing to do but cry for help and hope someone would hear me.”
Elfilin continued to listen with tears in his eyes. Both Kirby and even Bandana Waddle Dee were taken in by his words.
“Whether my cries for help were heard or not, I may never know. The whole thing’s kind of a blur. All I know is when Kirby defeated that thing… That…monster I became… He freed me.”
Magolor returned to Elfilin’s side. He sat down keeping his head low.
“So…to answer your question… Yes. I did once betray Kirby. I’m not proud of what I did. In fact, it’s my life’s deepest regret. Truth be told, after Kirby defeated me, I lost all that power and then some! Heehee… I even endured a perilous journey of my own to make it back here! But…that’s a story for another day!”
Elfilin stared sadly to the ground. He looked over to Magolor and was amazed to see the smile on his face and the happiness in his eyes.
“Don’t be sad for me Little Dude! I was very lucky to have Kirby there to help save me from the tragic fate I almost found myself in. Thank you, Kirby.”
Kirby nodded to Magolor and smiled.
“They don’t call me a hero for nothing!” Kirby said confidently.
“Well, Little Dude. There you have it. My truth! Just as you requested.” He stated with a single nod.
“Magolor… I-I had no idea.” He began, his voice wavering still in awe from his tale.
“That must have been so scary. To feel so alone. To be used for something like power…”
Elfilin could relate to Magolor’s situation but found it difficult to find the right words to say. He may not have succumbed to the temptations that Magolor did, but he knew all too well what it was like to feel lost, alone, and used.
“Wow, Magolor, I’ve never heard you open up like that before!” Kirby said.
“Well, I'm simply following the rules of the game! I’d hate to end up in the loser's circle with you two! Heehee! Speaking of such, I do believe it’s my turn now!” He snickered and turned around the face the only one left, Elfilin. He smiled and pointed his finger towards his big eared friend.
“Looks like I choose you, Little Dude! Truth or dare!” He said nearly bursting with excitement.
Elfilin felt like bubbles were popping in his stomach. He sat up tall in attempts to play it cool even though his heart was nearly beating out of his chest.
What do I pick?? Truth? Or dare? Ohhh! Why is this such a hard choice?
Elfilin was well aware that his truth would pale in comparison to Magolor's. There’s no way anything he could say would top Magolor’s harrowing tale. But on the other hand, this could be Elfilin’s chance to show Magolor what he’s made of! What’s the worst he could dare him to do? No matter what, he was ready to take on the challenge and do whatever it took to impress his new friend.
“I choose… dare!!” Elfilin exclaimed.
Bandana Waddle Dee and Kirby both gasped.
Oh no, Elfilin… What have you done? …
Magolor clapped with delight.
“I was hoping you would say that! You never cease to amaze me, Little Dude!”
Magolor squinted and looked around the room. He hummed to himself while holding his hand to his chin.
“I dare you…”
He paced around the room examining things as he pondered the question.
Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee stood by cautiously watching..
“Kirby… I have a bad feeling about this...” he whispered.
Magolor drifted across the room and peered through a window. He looked outside to see the Green Greens of Dream Land. It was a beautiful sight. Past the trees and the fields was a hillside crowned with a stately Castle standing high above everything else. Magolor turned around with a devious smirk on his face.
“I dare you…to break into Castle Dedede in the middle of the night… Sneak into the King’s room and…steal the hat he’s wearing right off his head!”
“WHAT!?!” Both Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee exclaimed in tandem.
“There’s no way Elfilin can do something like that!!” Kirby shouted. “Are you trying to get him kicked out of Dream Land for good?”
“What? You don’t think he can do it?” Magolor retorted impetuously.
“No! I mean, it’s not that! It’s just… That’s a little extreme, don’t you think? Breaking into Castle Dedede?! That’s just asking for trouble. Isn’t there something… smaller he can do?!” Kirby pleaded.
“Thinking small is so boring, Kirby! We have to show Elfilin what it truly means to have fun here on Planet Popstar!”
Kirby shook his head with umbrage at Magolor’s remarks.
“It’s just too risky! Elfilin didn’t come all the way here for-“
“I’ll do it.” a small voice chimed in.
“What!?” Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee looked at Elfilin with shock while Magolor face lit up with joy.
“That’s right… I’ll do it! Yeah!! I’ll steal that hat!” Elfilin proclaimed confidently.
“All right! That’s the spirit, Little Dude!” Magolor cheered.
“Elfilin, you want to do it!?” Kirby exclaimed with dismay.
“Well, sure! He dared me to do it!” Elfilin chuckled. “Those are the rules, right?” He smiled towards Magolor.
“That’s right!” He replied cheerfully as he clapped his hands. “I just knew you had it in you! Heehee!”
“We can’t just break into the castle! Do you have any idea what King Dedede will do to us if he catches us sneaking into his room?” Kirby protested.
Magolor placed his hand to his chin with a curious glance.
“Kirby, I was under the impression that you and the King were good friends. Didn’t you invite him to this party? Why isn’t he here?”
“Well…He’s probably… just busy, he is the King after all.” Kirby muttered, looking down sadly.
"How could anyone be too busy for the great Kirby of the Stars? After all you’ve done for him!” Magolor ranted furiously. “We need to teach that ungrateful fool a lesson.”
“What if Elfilin gets caught? Then what are we going to do?”
“What’s the worst that big oaf could do? He’s nothing but a lazy glutton. I’d be surprised if he even noticed him at all.” Magolor said as he nodded to Elfilin. They both looked to Kirby with big pleading eyes.
“Come on, Kirby! I can handle it! Remember everything we went through back home? This is nothing compared to that!” Elfilin exclaimed.
“Elfilin, this isn’t like that at all. You could get in a lot of trouble. Do you really want to go through with it?”
“Yeah, Kirby, I’m sure!” Elfilin declared. “I’m ready to win this game!”
“If you’re going to do this… Magolor!” Kirby turned to face the mischievous mage. “You’re going with him!”
“Oh, I’d be happy to tag along! In fact, why don’t we all go?!” Magolor sneered as he wrapped his arms around his circle of friends. “Wouldn’t that be exciting?!”
“No way! Count me out!” Exclaimed Bandana Waddle Dee exclaimed as he shoved himself free. “I want nothing to do with this!”
“Come on, Bandana Waddle Dee! It will be fun! Please come with us!” Elfilin gazed at him with the biggest, saddest eyes he could conjure up.
Bandana Waddle Dee begrudgingly yielded to Elfilin’s puppy dog stare.
“Oh, alright, I’ll go!” He cried reluctantly.
“Woohoo!” Elfilin cried out joyously as he spun around.
“Wow, are we really gonna do this? Steal the King’s hat?” Bandana Waddle Dee asked, his voice trembling as he sought consolation from Kirby.
“We’ll have to be careful and quiet!” Kirby began. “The last thing I want is for Elfilin to get caught up in even more trouble here in Dream Land!” He said eying Magolor with censure.
“Of course, Kirby! It’s all in good fun! In fact, I think the King will get a good laugh from it!”
“If we’re gonna do this you’ll need to help Elfilin come up with a plan!” Kirby stated adamantly.
“The night is still young, Kirby! We have plenty of time to prepare!” Magolor nodded in response.
“Elfilin, I sure hope you know what you’re getting yourself into…” Bandana Waddle Dee mumbled quietly.
Elfilin peered out the window, his sight drawn to the great castle in the distance. The place he would prove to Magolor what he was capable of.
“Don’t worry, everyone! I’ll get that hat, and no one will stop us!” Elfilin declared confidently. Magolor came to his side and placed a hand around him.
“That’s the spirit, Little Dude! We’ll need to plan a strategy-“
“Wait” Kirby exclaimed abruptly.” Before we get into all of that…Can we please clean up this mess first!?” Kirby said amidst the cluttered state of disarray that his home had become during their game. Books, food and so much more was scattered throughout the floor of his home.
“Of course, Kirby! Don’t even lift a finger!” Magolor turned his attention to Bandana Waddle Dee and smirked.
“Bandana Waddle Dee and I will clean up this unsightly clutter. You just sit back and relax.”
Magolor began to clean the room right away. He appeared happy to do any task for Kirby no matter how menial. Bandana Waddle Dee promptly joined him almost as if he was racing him to pick up more stuff quickly.
“I don’t mind helping you clean up, Kirby! Leave it to me!” He grabbed a broom and began sweeping. Bandana Waddle Dee was also always more than willing to help his friends, even if it meant cleaning up messes that weren’t his fault….
“Wow, really?! Thanks!” Kirby cheered. He took a seat on the floor and chomped down on one of the many apples still strewn about the room.
“We’ll have this place spotless in no time.” Magolor assured as he and Bandana Waddle Dee continued tidying up the room and returning Kirby’s belongings back where to their rightful place.
Elfilin continued to stare out the window as the two of them cleaned up. He felt nervous about what could happen, but he was determined to win the game and prove himself to his friends. He knew it would be risky, but if it meant he could prove to everyone that he had what it takes to beat Magolor’s game maybe the risks didn’t matter. All he wanted to do was make his friends proud.
“Watch out, Castle Dedede...” He said confidently. “Here I come!”

Chapter Five: Seeing Red

Magolor and Elfilin headed outside towards the lake behind Kirby’s house. Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee were already there tossing some pool toys into the water. Kirby saw them and waved at them.
“Over here!” He called out enthusiastically.
Elfilin smiled and picked up his pace. Magolor, on the other hand, seemed to slow down to a complete halt. He glanced at the water and shuddered a bit. He shook it off and continued to follow Elfilin.
“Oooh! This is gonna be so much fun! It’s been forever since I last went swimming! What about you, Magolor?” Elfilin said, smiling.
“Well…” Magolor began but stopped when they finally reached Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee. Kirby dashed over to them, clutching a variety of different pool toys.
"This is my favorite swimming spot, and it's right here in my own backyard!" He started. “We could race, relax or play all kinds of games! What should we do?”
While Elfilin appeared thrilled and eager to join in the fun, Magolor appeared somewhat apprehensive and worried. He was twiddling his hands together and looking around uncomfortably. Elfilin noticed his change in mood and grew worried.
“Well, all I want to do is relax!” Bandana Waddle Dee said, tossing a pool floaty into the water.
“Yeah, that sounds, great!” Elfilin twirled about happily, hoping to lift Magolor’s spirit a bit.
"Watch this, Elfilin! Here I go!"
Kirby took off running and jumped high in the air. He performed a stylish flip, then promptly landed in the water, splashing everyone around him. Magolor quickly dimensional vanished to avoid getting wet, while Elfilin and Bandana Waddle Dee got a face full of water. They seemed to quickly laugh it off, but Magolor looked more annoyed than humored.
Bandana Waddle Dee jumped into a floaty and swam over to Kirby. They playfully splashed each other around, then returned their attention to Magolor and Elfilin.
“Come on, guys! The water is great!” Kirby said sending a splash their way. Elfilin turned to Magolor and smiled, bouncing with glee.
“Are you ready!?” He said bursting with excitement. Magolor leaned forward and caught a glimpse of his reflection in the water. He glanced over at Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee and smiled nervously.
“Eh…You know what?…I think I’ll sit this one out. Go on without me little dude!” Magolor said as he backed away slowly from the water.
"Go…without you?" Elfilin said disappointed.
“Is something wrong?”
“It’s not that! It’s just, well…I only brought this one outfit, you know? I’d hate to get it all wet.” Magolor said nervously clutching his cape.
“Elfilin! Magolor! Are you two coming?” Kirby called out waving his hand at them.
Elfilin kept glancing between Magolor and Kirby, his eyes growing sadder and sadder.
“Hey, it’s alright! Go have fun with Kirby! I’ll just wait right here!” Magolor plopped down near the edge of the pond under a big, leafy tree.
“Hey, what’s the hold up!?” Kirby asked swimming over towards them. Bandana Waddle Dee remained where he was, hopeful that Magolor would indeed not join them.
“It’s fine, really...I’m just….not a fan of swimming…sorry. Besides, I’m pretty exhausted after running errands for you all day. I could use a break. I’ll just hang out here for now. Go have fun!”
“Are you sure?”
“Yep! Super sure.” He said nodding his head.
“Well…alright then, Magolor. I hope you change your mind and join us though! I don’t want you to feel left out of the fun or anything!”
“Kirby, I insist it’s alright! Really. Go splash around with your friends! I don’t mind a bit.”
“Well, we’ll be right over here if you change your mind, Magolor!” Kirby swam back towards Bandana Waddle Dee. Elfilin floated towards the water but stopped one last time.
“Hey, are you sure you’re alright?”
“I’m fine! Really. I mean… No, I’m fine.”
“… Is there something you need to talk about? You can tell me, Magolor!” Elfilin floated closer to him.
Magolor sighed deeply and looked up at Elfilin with sad eyes.
"Well, it's just that…I guess I’m just a little annoyed about how no one seems to respect me around here. I mean, what’s with everyone giving me the third degree all the time? Sure, no one’s perfect, but I’m not such a bad guy, am I?" He stated dramatically, sulking his head down low.
“What!? No way! You’re not a bad guy at all! You’re awesome!…Super awesome, even!” Elfilin exclaimed.
"I wish more folks around here felt the same way!…You know your friend Bandana Waddle Dee over there?"
Magolor glanced over at him, who was too busy having fun with Kirby to notice he was being talked about.
"He’s always been so cruel to me." Magolor said before turning his back to Elfilin for a brief moment. He appeared to wipe his eyes with his hands. He quickly turned back around, now crying with tears pouring down his face and dripping onto the ground.
“…He and so many others!… No one wants to give someone like me a chance!” Magolor shook his fists dramatically as he choked on his words. Elfilin frowned sadly as he listened to him lament.
“Even with Kirby’s forgiveness, it just wasn’t enough to regain the trust of everyone. I’m still treated like a complete outcast. No matter what I do, it’s just not enough to be accepted.” Magolor’s usual soft and sweet voice was now somber and low. He sighed and looked over at Kirby, who was blissfully unaware they were still talking to each other, splashing about without a care in the world.
“You and Kirby…you’re the only ones who gave me a chance. The only ones who accepted my friendship. It’s all I ever wanted…”
“Magolor…You know, I’m kind of an outcast too…I know how it feels. But you’re not alone. I’m here for you!” Elfilin smiled and nodded at a Magolor. He then wiped the last of his tears away. He returned a smile to Elfilin.
“Your friendship truly means everything to me, Little Dude. Thank you.”
Elfilin blushed, his eyes wide and sparkling.
“Wow… Do you really mean that!?!…You can always count on me, Magolor! I’m glad to be your friend!!”
Magolor smiled and looked over at Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee who were busy swimming not too far from them.
“Well, I’m sure Kirby is eager for you to join them over there! Go have fun!” Magolor said, nodding his head.
“Well…alright then! See ya in a bit!” Elfilin waved goodbye and then turned towards the pond. He floated over the water to Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee who were relaxing in the cool, clean water.
“Hey, Elfilin!” Kirby said enthusiastically.
“Wow, Kirby! This is such a neat little pond! It’s just like the one back at home where we would go fishing!” Elflin playfully splashed around and swam all through the water. He flew back up and spun around sending a small splash of water around.
“Yeah! We always had a blast fishing together! I’m really glad you’re having so much fun, Elfilin!” Kirby said happily.
“Are you enjoying it here on Pop Star?” Bandana Waddle Dee asked.
“I sure am! It’s so nice here! And so pretty! You sure have a real great home here, Kirby! I can see why Magolor loves it here so much!”
Bandana Waddle Dee scowled at the sound of his name.
“Magolor!? Ugh. I miss the way things were before he showed up…”
Elfilin frowned.
Bandana Waddle Dee really doesn’t like Magolor… I wish there was something I could do…
“Hey! Speaking of Magolor… What were the two of you talking about over there?” Kirby asked.
“Oh!…well…” Elfilin glanced over to Magolor who had his back towards them not paying attention at all.
“Well, I suppose…if you really wanna know…He told me that he feels a little upset that he is still treated like an outcast around Dream Land. He said no one will accept his friendship.”
Bandana Waddle Dee suddenly flailed about and swam away from the two of them in a hurry.
“What’s wrong!?” Kirby asked, shocked at his friends sudden burst of anxiety.
Bandana Waddle Dee-terrified of being caught discussing Magolor behind his back again, nervously glanced over at the wizard, who was still sitting alone with his back turned towards them.
“I…just…I felt something brush my foot!…Sorry about that!” He chuckled nervously.
“Hey, Bandana Waddle Dee! Why don’t you go over and talk to Magolor?” Elfilin said.
“WHAT!? Why would I want to do that!?”
“Well, he seemed especially upset that you refuse to forgive him over what happened when you all first met!”
“ELFILIN!!!- Please…keep…your voice…down..” Bandana Waddle said anxiously flailing about, his voice growing muffled with every word.
“You know, he does look pretty sad sitting all alone over there. Maybe you should go talk to him!” Kirby said.
“What?! Not you too, Kirby!”
“It would probably cheer him up! He’s a nice guy after all! Just go talk to him!”
“Why don’t you go talk to him, Kirby? He likes you…a LOT more than he likes me.”
“That’s not true! Don’t be ridiculous. Magolor likes you, he is just…well, he’s weird.”
“Weird doesn’t even begin to cover it!”
Bandana Waddle Dee sighed and pondered to himself.
Magolor is a complete jerk! He hates me and I hate him! Well…I don’t know. Maybe I don’t hate him… Hate is a strong word. But he is a jerk! That much is true. But…maybe I am being too hard on him…If Kirby can forgive him, so should I, right?… He does look pretty pitiful over there doesn’t he?Maybe I should apologize and we could put an end to this bitter rivalry right here, right now!… Elfilin would be so happy! A fresh start! I just… have to talk to him… That’s all! You can do this, Bandana Waddle Dee!
“Alright then, fine! I’ll go talk to him. But if he doesn’t care about what I have to say, then there’s nothing I can do!”
“I’m sure he’ll appreciate every word! It would mean a lot to him! Thank you, Bandana Waddle Dee!” Elfilin said with a big smile. Kirby nodded in agreement.
Bandana Waddle Dee groaned under his breath, got of the pond and slowly made his way towards Magolor. He approached him with slight hesitation unsure of how to proceed.
“M-Magolor?…” He said softly. Magolor, seemed to be daydreaming and not paying a bit of attention to Bandana Waddle Dee. He took a few steps closer to him and raised his voice slightly.
“Magolor?…” he said taking another step closer to him.
Is he ignoring me?…Grrr. This guy is the worst. Why am I even doing this?
“Magolor!”
“What…do you want?” Magolor said, just slightly turning his face towards him.
“Oh- I’m sorry..I don’t mean to intrude I just…”
“I am trying to focus and you’re distracting me.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I just…wanted to say…” Bandana Waddle Dee kept stumbling over his words, growing more nervous and intimidated by the second.
“Well?” Magolor said, now clearly annoyed.
“Magolor, listen. I just…wanted to say…well…I’m so-”
Magolor rose slowly and turned around to face Bandana Waddle Dee. He cupped his hands together, performing his signature nod.
“Oh, just save it, Bandana Waddle Dee. I know what you’re trying to do.” He said coldly.
“…What!? I’m just-“
“Look…I know you’re here to ‘apologize’, so you can go back over to the Little Dude there and tell him all about how you’ve forgiven me! Is that right?” Magolor remarked, nodding his head quickly.
“No! Wait-I- I mean-“
“You don’t like me, and that’s fine. Truth be told, I don’t like you either. In fact, you really get on my nerves. I wish Kirby could see you for who you truly are. So mean…so cruel. To be honest, you’re just a big bully.” Magolor went on.
Bandana Waddle Dee stood stiff as a board as he took Magolors torrent of words head on. Over in the pond, Kirby and Elfilin could see them from but couldn’t hear anything being said.
“Sorry, but I’m not interested in your forgiveness or your friendship. I have Kirby and now, I have Elfilin, too. Whether you dislike me because of my actions in the past, or you resent me due to my status in Kirby’s life, it doesn’t make a difference to me.”
Bandana Waddle Dee’s face began to turn red. He started trembling from the anger building up inside of him. Magolor's verbal attack was getting too much for him to bear.
“I appreciate it, really. But you can keep your apology. I’m not- …W-What are you doing? Hey!…Get away from me! HEY!!!!”
*** SPLASH!!!! ***
Kirby and Elfilin heard a panicked yelp followed by a loud splash in the water. They looked over to see Bandana Waddle Dee standing at the edge of the pond- alone. He appeared flustered and his face was bright red. Magolor was no where in sight. Elfilin then watched as a slew of bubbles rose to the surface of the pond.
“Bandana Waddle Dee?…What was that!?” Kirby shouted.
Kirby's voice seemed to shake Bandana Waddle Dee out of the rage-induced trance he was in.
He shook his head quickly then looked down into the water with trepidation.
Oh, no…What have I done!?
“Hey! What happened to Magolor?” Elfilin cried out.
Bandana Waddle Dee gulped nervously and tried attempting to speak. His was voice was anxious and shaky.
“He…he…” Bandana Waddle Dee kept choking up as he struggled to get even one word out.
“It…it happened so fast! I- I didn’t mean to do it!” he said, his voice cracking.
“Just tell me what happened, Bandana Waddle Dee!” Kirby asked as Elfilin kept looking for a sign of Magolor.
“I…I…”
Before Bandana Waddle Dee could muster up another word, Magolor appeared right behind him instantly. He could feel his presence but was far too frightened to turn around. Magolor was soaking wet, dripping water from his ears all the way down his cape. There was a fierce look of rage in his eyes. Bandana Waddle Dee turned to him slowly, as pale as a ghost.
“Magolor…I…I’m sorry! I didn’t mean too-“
“You…You HOOLIGAN!” Magolor shouted, clenching his fists angrily.
Bandana Waddle Dee began to shake with fear. Before this, Elfilin had never seen Magolor show such anger. It sent chills down his spine.
“Magolor, I- I didn’t mean to do that! I was just- we were talking…and… and I-”
“What is wrong with you? Are you MAD!?” Magolor yelled flailing his hands about.
“Oh, no!” Kirby hastily exited the pond and came rushing towards his two arguing friends.
“Magolor, I…I’m so sorry! Please forgive me! It…It was an accident!” Bandana Waddle Dee said nervously waving his hands at him.
“An accident?! That was no accident! Let me show you what a real accident looks like-“
“Magolor!”
Kirby rushed over to Magolor and laid a kind hand on his shoulder. The hostile look in his eyes softened immediately and he quickly regained his composure. Kirby looked to Bandana Waddle Dee who was still on the ground cowering in fear. After a moment, Magolor sighed deeply and pulled Kirby’s hand off his shoulder. He then- to everyone’s shock-starting smiling and clapping. Kirby and Elfilin exchanged puzzled looks. Magolor, still dripping, sopping wet, dusted himself off and then smiled to his friends, nodding his head in delight.
“Well, it looks like I may have lost my temper there. My deepest apologies.”
He turned to Bandana Waddle Dee and clapped his hands happily once again.
“Oooh, that was a good one, Bandana Waddle Dee! You really got me!” He said still clapping.
Elfilin was a little perplexed by Magolor's rapid mood shift. He continued to stare in bewilderment.
Magolor then helped Bandana Waddle Dee in getting up and even brushed some dirt off of him. Kirby rushed to his side to lend a hand.
“Are you okay?” Kirby asked him.
“Yeah, Kirby, I’m fine. Thanks…”
Kirby exchanged glances with the two of them.
“Bandana Waddle Dee… You didn’t push him, did you?”
Bandana Waddle Dee let out a sad sigh and looked down in shame. Magolor, still completely drenched in pond water laid a firm hand on his shoulder and laughed.
“Oh, Kirby! We were just goofing off! You know, having some fun!” Magolor said, playfully jabbing Bandana Waddle Dee on the side a few times.
“Hmmm. I don’t know if I believe you. It sure didn’t look like goofing off to me.” Kirby said sternly.
Elfilin still felt a little shaken up over witnessing Magolor’s outburst. It was rather shocking considering that Magolor had been nothing but friendly and kind to him. He began to feel slightly worried. It was hard watching two of his good friends argue and not get along.
What if the things everyone said about Magolor being a bad guy are true?
“No, Kirby. It’s fine. Really…” Bandana Waddle Dee remarked as he shot a dirty look towards Magolor.
“See, Kirby? It’s fine! Nothing to worry about at all!” Magolor wrapped his wet hand around Bandana Waddle Dee and pulled him in closer.
“What was that splash, then? You’re all wet, I thought you didn’t want to swim?”
Bandana Waddle Dee pinched his brow and glared at the ground, his eyes scrunched shut.
“Kirby…I pushed him-“
“-Pushed me to let go and have fun! Kirby, you really do have great taste in friends! Bandana Waddle Dee here sure has a way with words!” Magolor said while giving him a rather aggressive pat on the back. Kirby remained doubtful.
“Magolor, are you telling the truth?” Kirby asked.
“Of course I am! Remember Kirby, I don’t lie anymore!”
Elfilin pondered Magolor’s statement.
He’s said that a few times now… ‘I don’t lie anymore…’ He must really have a bad history of telling lies… He lied to that shopkeeper… He lied to Meta Knight… You don’t think he’d… He isn’t… No! He would never lie to me! Friends don’t do that to their friends! Right?…
Kirby turned back to Bandana Waddle Dee.
“Is that really what happened? I know you’ll tell me the truth!”
Magolor appeared slightly offended by Kirby's statement, but maintained his cool nonetheless.
Bandana Waddle Dee could have taken this opportunity to finally tell Kirby and Elfilin about Magolor's rude and hateful remarks, but he chose to play along with Magolor's ruse. After all, it's only for the weekend. It's the least he can do for Elfilin.
“…He’s telling the truth, Kirby. Besides…I was only…kidding.” Bandana Waddle Dee said glaring at Magolor, slightly grinning.
Kirby smiled bounced around happily.
“Alright then! If everything is all right here then, come on let’s go!” Kirby anxiously ran back to the pond but stopped when he realized no one was following him.
“Are you guys coming!?”
Elfilin watched Bandana Waddle Dee and Magolor who were now caught up in an intense stare down.
“Are- are you coming?…” he said softly hoping to break the tension.
A smile creeped up on Magolor’s face and he began to laugh a little.
“Actually, Little Dude. I have an idea! Hang tight.”
Magolor floated up and turned towards Kirby. He cupped his hands together and nodded his head with a smile.
“Hey, Kirby! I think we’ve all had enough swimming for one day, wouldn’t you agree? I have a really good idea for a fun, new game all 4 of us could all play together!”
“Oh, really? What kind of game!?” Kirby said, his eyes shining brightly.
“I’ll tell you all about it once we go back inside! Trust me, it’s going to be a LOT of fun!” Magolor twirled with delight.
“Oh, wow! A fun, new game!?! That sounds exciting! I’ll hurry up and clean this mess up so we can head back inside!”
Kirby ran back and gathered up the pool toys. Elfilin followed him to help. Bandana Waddle Dee turned around to see Magolor now standing close behind him.
“Magolor!” He shrieked in surprise, still not quite used to Magolor’s casual use of his Dimensional Vanish.
Magolor held his hands together and nodded his head at him.
“Well, it looks as though you’re not nearly as spineless as I thought you were. Good for you!”
Magolor wringed out the excess water from his cape then splashed it in Bandana Waddle Dees face.
"However…" Magolor's tone of voice changed dramatically, becoming more serious and cryptic.
“Just know I’ll be planning my revenge for this.”
“R-revenge!?” Bandana Waddle Dee gasped.
“Of course! You didn’t think I’d just let you get away with pulling a stunt like that on me? Heeheehee… And here I thought you were smarter than that.”
“But- I said I was sorry!”
“You humiliated me in front of my good friends. Not to mention I’m freezing and soaking wet because of you. I could have drowned you know!”
Magolor tightened his grip on his cape, squeezing out more excess water.
“Yep! I’ll definitely get you back for this one.”
Magolor walked past Bandana Waddle Dee towards Kirby’s house covering his face as he tried to muffle his laughter.
“…and when you least expect it too! Hehehe! See you around…friend.”
Magolor winked at him, then floated off into Kirby's house, leaving Bandana Waddle Dee transfixed in fear.
Oh man… Why me!?
He plopped to the ground in anguish with nothing to do but wait for Kirby and Elfilin who were busy fishing out the pool toys from the pond.
Kirby seemed eager to move on, moving quickly and using his mighty inhale to suck up all the toys from the water quickly. They managed to get everything into a pile. Elfilin picked up as many as he could carry.
“Hey Kirby…Can I ask you something.. Something about Magolor?”
“Sure Elfilin, what is it?”
Elfilin pondered for a moment then shook his head, unable to find the right words.
“Actually, I think I’ll just ask him myself. Sorry…” he said softly.
“You know, Magolor really seems to like you a whole lot!” Kirby said.
“Really!?” Elfilin exclaimed, his hands flapping with joy.
“I can tell he really appreciates your kindness. You know, he doesn’t really have a lot of friends.”
“Why is that, Kirby? He’s so nice and really friendly. Why does everyone treat him the way they do?”
“I’ve known him for a while now, and he can be a really great friend when he wants to be! It’s just…well…”
“… Well?…”
“He was a lot different when we first met. You never got to see the side of him that we all saw.”
Kirby’s voice grew soft and solemn.
“I know he’s sorry for what he did. In fact, he really has changed! He’s not lying about that. He still did some pretty horrible things though. But I forgive him. I want to help him be better but he falls into his old habits a lot. He really does mean well, he just… Has a funny way of showing it I guess.”
“Well Kirby, I think it’s really cool that you can forgive him for betraying you the way he did.”
Kirby stared at Elfilin, his eyes wide with shock.
“Wait a minute, how do you know about that!?”
“Uhhh, what? No! I mean-”
“Hey, Kirby! Need any help?” Bandana Waddle Dee said running over to them.
“Oh, thanks Bandana Waddle Dee!” Kirby said smiling. Elfilin sighed in relief, hoping Kirby would forget what they were discussing.
The 3 friends gathered up the pool toys and retreated for Kirby’s home. They left the toys out in the sun to dry off and headed inside. Magolor already there was waiting for them. He nodded happily upon seeing them walk inside.
The three friends gathered the pool toys and headed back to Kirby's house. They quickly went in after setting the toys out in a sunny spot to dry. Inside, Magolor was already waiting for them. When he saw them enter, he happily nodded.
“It’s about time! I’ve been waiting!” Magolor was pacing about the room eagerly. Bandana Waddle Dee rolled his eyes and slouched on the couch, exhausted.
“Well, Magolor, what’s this exciting game you have planned!?” Kirby exclaimed, his eyes shining brightly as ever.
“Oh, it’s one of my all time favorites! You’re gonna love it!” Magolor clapped his hands with excitement. He smiled and nodded as Kirby and Elfilin sat down next to Bandana Waddle Dee.
“Prepare for some real fun. Are you ready?” Magolor exclaimed.
“The name of the game is….
Truth or dare!!!”

Chapter Four: Let Me Explain Everything About Magolor…
Elfilin and Magolor were getting closer to Kirby's house. Magolor cast an anxious glance over at Elfilin. He began to slow down, and then they came to a halt. Kirby’s house was just below.
“Hey… So, you know that stuff I said about Kirby back there? Let's uh… Let’s keep that to ourselves, okay?” Magolor said with a smile.
Elfilin grew anxious as he looked down. He seemed to have forgotten about the lies back in town. It might be difficult to explain to Kirby how they managed to bring back so much fruit.
“Magolor…You lied about Kirby...Why would you do that?”
Magolor took a deep breath then looked down below.
“Kirby has saved Planet Popstar many times. I’m sure you’re aware of that. You’ve seen Kirby in action; isn’t he amazing?…Well, that fool seems to have forgotten just how important he is. Kirby isn’t just some ordinary citizen. He’s a hero and he deserves to be treated as such! Wouldn’t you agree, Little Dude?”
“Well…yeah! Of course, I do! But…What will Kirby say when he finds we stole everything?” Elfilin asked.
“Kirby’s not going to find out!” Magolor winked.
“W-what do you mean by that? You’re gonna lie to Kirby?!”
“What!? Of course not! I'd never lie to my dearest friend!” Magolor said, almost outraged by the remark. “...Besides, he'll be so completely thrilled about all this food we’ve brought him that he won't care a bit where it came from!”
“But Magolor, stealing is just wrong!…I…I can’t go through with this. I’m sorry, but I’m taking everything back!” Elfilin turned around and prepared to fly back but Magolor quickly appeared right in front of him and held up his hand, preventing him from doing so.
“No way, Little Dude! Kirby’s waiting on us! We can’t let him down!” Elfilin anxiously tried to move past him, but Magolor wouldn’t budge.
“Calm down! To be honest…we technically didn’t steal anything because…Well, I’m gonna go back and pay for it all tomorrow!”
“…You are?”
“Of course!…I do it all the time.” He smirked.
“But…Aren’t you banned from that place?”
“…Oh… That obnoxious jerk has such a nasty temper. He’s never liked me, and I don't know why; I’ve never done a thing to him. He’s always blaming me when things go wrong for him because, well, he’s just bad at his job. It can’t be helped. He's a pathetic old fool.”
“Are you sure?…or is this another lie?” Elfilin asked.
“Okay…fine. I'll admit...I occasionally tell a little, white lie to some of the folks around here…but to Kirby? Or you? I don't lie to my friends anymore!” Magolor said, smiling and nodding.
Anymore?…
“Aw, don't give me that look.” Magolor said with a pout. “I only lied about Kirby like that because I was in a hurry! Normally, I wouldn’t do something that drastic, but I had no choice. He was taking way too long, you know?”
“I wonder if he’s okay after what happened with that Black Hole-”
“Like I said, Little Dude, it’s no big deal! No one got hurt! No harm done!” Magolor snickered. He seemed to have no regret at all for what they had done. He seemed like he might have enjoyed it even. He pointed below to Kirby’s house and smiled.
“Well, let’s go!” As Magolor tightened his grip on the hefty sack of fruit, he noticed Elfilin still appeared to be a bit hesitant to return. He jabbed him on the shoulder with a lighthearted punch.
“Remember, Little Dude! I’m going back tomorrow to pay for everything we took today…and then some, even!” He said with a wink.
Regardless of how horrible he felt about the situation, Elfilin couldn't help but believe Magolor. He just brimmed with sincerity. So kind and friendly. He certainly had a mischievous side, as Elfilin could see, but was it really such a bad thing? He clearly took a lot of pride in his friendship with Kirby and valued it above all else. Elfilin was impressed and inspired by his dedication to being such a good friend, but was also a little concerned and somewhat curious about the obscure and dark past he seemed to be hiding.
“Hmm. In fact, I'll throw in a little extra to help repair the damage caused by that nasty black hole!” Magolor continued.
“Really!? Wow…That’s very…cool of you!”
“What can I say? I’m a pretty cool dude…And so are you! Nice work back there!”
“You really think I’m cool!?” Elfilin exclaimed, his eyes wide with awe.
“Of course, and you'll be even cooler if you remember what I said about keeping what happened back there a secret! Just follow my lead, Little Dude. Remember, we're not lying; We’re simply keeping it between us. I’ll handle everything and you won’t have to say a word! Now, let’s get down there and show Kirby all this delicious fruit! Last one there’s a rotten egg!”
Magolor sped off flying down below to Kirby’s house. Elfilin quickly caught up to him and even surpassed him. Just as he thought he would make it to Kirby’s door first, Magolor emerged directly in front of him. He twirled about, giggling.
“You almost beat me! Looks like you'll have to pick up your pace juuuust a bit, there, heeheehee!” Magolor winked. Elfilin blushed, humiliated at yet another defeat.
“Don't worry, I won't tell Kirby about it..heehee!” Magolor opened the door and they went inside to see Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee continuing their chess game from earlier.
“Yo! We’re back! We brought lots of good stuff too! I made sure to get plenty of apples, just as you wanted, Kirby!” Magolor tossed him a bright red apple.
“The most delicious apple in the universe!…Just for you!” He smiled.
Kirby's eyes sparkled as he gazed at the apple. Then he inhaled it all in one go.
“Wow, that was delicious! The best apple I’ve ever had! Thank you, Magolor! Thank you, Elfilin!” Kirby jumped around happily.
Magolor bounced around joyously with Kirby, while Elfilin chuckled nervously. Magolor then took both sacks of fruit and poured them out on the floor. Kirby's eyes grew wide as he gazed at the mountain of fruit surrounding them.
“Alright, Kirby! Dig in!” Magolor smiled. Kirby was practically drooling on himself from his excitement.
“Wow! Look at all of this!! Apples, peaches, and even strawberries! Imagine what we could do with all of this! We could make cobblers, pies, fruit tarts, even parfaits!! The possibilities are endless!!”
Kirby frantically rummaged through all of the fruit grabbing every piece he could possibly fit in his hands.
“That's right, Kirby! I made sure to get only the best! I know just how hungry you get, so we made sure to grab plenty!”
Magolor smiled as he sat down next to Kirby.
Bandana Waddle Dee was amazed by how much fruit they brought back. It almost seemed too good to be true that Magolor could bring back this much. Kirby, of course, was so eager to devour everything that he didn't seem to care where it all came from. He was just happy to eat. Bandana Waddle Dee then spotted Elfilin standing alone. He quietly took a few steps towards him.
“Pssst…Elfilin!” He called out. Elfilin turned to see Bandana Waddle Dee motioning for him to come closer. While Magolor and Kirby were preoccupied, they met in another corner of the room.
“Hey, Elfilin…how did it go?…” he asked, speaking softly.
Elfilin sighed and glanced down. He then turned towards Magolor, still beaming with happiness as he sat with Kirby.
“…It’s Magolor, isn’t it!? What did he do this time!?” Bandana Waddle Dee said angrily.
“I just knew he was up to no good! He did something horrible again didn’t he!?”
“What? No!” Elfilin said hastily. “Magolor is…Well, he’s great! He showed me the sights, introduced me to some new people, and helped get all this food for Kirby!”
“Yeah, about all this food…” Bandana Waddle Dee said as he looked around the room. “How did you guys pay for all this?…”
Elfilin froze in panic. He remembered Magolor’s plea to keep everything between them. He couldn’t tell Bandana Waddle Dee about what really happened. But he couldn’t lie either. He took another uneasy glimpse around.
“Well…you see…” Elfilin stammered. “Um…Magolor…”
Bandana Waddle Dee shook his head in defeat as Elfilin stumbled over his words.
“…He handled everything like a total pro! It’s all been taken care of! There’s no need to worry Bandana Waddle Dee!”
“Are you sure? You seem anxious…”
Elfilin was determined to keep his promise to Magolor but…he wasn’t quite as good at lying as Magolor seemed to be.
“…Yep!…he…” Elfilin sighed. “Paid for everything…”
“Oh, Elfilin…you can be honest with me. I won’t tell Magolor anything you say…It’s not like I ever wanna talk to him anyway.”
“I don’t know why you seem to hate him so much…He really is nice, you know? He’s awesome! Ooooh, and I think he wants to be my friend! Isn’t that cool!?”
Bandana Waddle Dee exhaled deeply. He was well aware of Magolor's ways. Using his charm to win over anybody he wants and get whatever he desires. He watched him do it to Kirby and now he was doing the same to Elfilin.
“Elfilin…” Bandana Waddle Dee said.
“Look, I know you seem to like Magolor a lot…and I really hate to have to tell you this…but he’s not this super cool guy you think he is.”
Elfilin frowned. Bandana Waddle Dee leaned in closer and spoke quietly.
“He tries really, REALLY hard to make you think he wants to be your friend…He plays it off like he’s a real nice guy…but the truth is..he’s a lying, backstabbing, TRAITOR!!”
“…A traitor?!” Elfilin was taken aback. “Magolor!? There’s no way!”
“He’s a liar and a wizard!! Believe me, Elfilin! Stay away from Magolor if you know what’s good for you!”
Elfilin glanced over at Magolor and Kirby. Still talking and laughing it up. Could he really be this lying, backstabbing traitor!? Elfilin couldn't picture Magolor doing such a thing to anyone, let alone Kirby.
“He might look friendly and nice now-but it’s all an act!- Listen! When he first arrived on Planet Popstar…He told us he was a lost traveler in need of help. Kirby, of course helped him. We all did! You know what happened after that!?”
“…What?”
“HE BETRAYED US! He betrayed Kirby!”
“He..betrayed Kirby??” Elfilin was in disbelief.
“Yep! And he’ll betray you too, Elfilin!…Once Magolor has you right where he wants you, that’s when he gets you! He tricked us into helping him steal something that didn’t belong to him and once he had it- he ATTACKED US!!”
“Magolor attacked you!?” Elfilin still couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He knew Magolor was hiding something…but he never imagined he was hiding something quite like this…
“Yeah! And that’s not all!…He put on this thing called the Master Crown which made him transform into a big hideous looking monster! He had piercing red eyes, long, scary horns and big, freaky hands!”
Hearing this left Elfilin in pure shock. Magolor, a monster who betrays his friends? The very same Magolor who has been so kind to him and Kirby…It couldn’t be true…
“Magolor…turned into a monster?”
“That’s right! After he attacked us, he abandoned us on a strange planet far away from home! We were lucky to make it out alive!”
“What happened after Magolor…attacked you?…”
“Well, we managed to catch up to him thanks to a dragon named Landia. But he was determined to get what he wanted and wasn’t going down without a fight. Kirby had no choice but to face him in battle.”
“You mean Kirby and Magolor actually fought each other?”
“Yeah... Magolor was strong and very powerful but Kirby put up a good fight and ultimately had the upper hand. It was a pretty intense battle but Kirby was able to take him down.”
“…Take him down? You mean like…”
“Yep. Kirby defeated him.”
Elfilin was rendered speechless. Magolor seemed friendly, funny..a bit of a liar maybe, but a monster?…He couldn’t wrap his head around it. And to think they once fought each other in a vicious battle…When you looked at the two of them now, it seemed unbelievable.
“What happened to him after that?”
“Well, he just sort of…vanished…and that was the end of it.”
Elfilin kept his gaze on Magolor as Bandana Waddle Dee spoke, still struggling to process everything he was hearing.
“Kirby took it pretty hard at first but…after a while he finally managed to moved on…Magolor was gone for a really long time but then…one day he just showed back up on Planet Popstar acting as if nothing ever happened. We were all a little confused…But Kirby was really happy to see him again. Magolor has been living here in Dream Land ever since. He claims he’s changed but he still causes all kinds of trouble around here and he’s still a big, fat, liar. I’ll never understand him. But…for some reason…he and Kirby are still friends…” Bandana Waddle Dee sighed.
Elfilin could clearly see the two of them had a very special bond. He could tell they really enjoyed each other's company. Elfilin knew Kirby wouldn’t forgive someone who wasn’t deserving of it. If he was willing to forgive Magolor even after all that, it had to mean something, right?
“Bandana Waddle Dee…maybe you’re being a little too hard on Magolor…” Elfilin said softly. “If Kirby is willing to forgive him, then…maybe you could too.”
Bandana Waddle Dee was admittedly, a little shocked at Elfilin’s remark.
“Elfilin…you heard what I said, right? He turned into a MONSTER!”
While Elfilin could obviously see that Magolor was far from perfect, the more he learned about him the more sympathy he felt for him. While Elfilin’s circumstances might have been a little different he found himself relating more and more to his seemingly tragic past.
“Magolor doesn’t seem like a monster to me…In fact, he is one of coolest people I’ve ever met. I know I don’t know him as well as you and Kirby do, but if he says he’s changed then I think he means it! He just wants to be a good friend! Look at all this fruit he got for Kirby! Don’t you see how happy they are! You really ought to give Magolor another chance, Bandana Waddle Dee. Once you get to know him, he’s really a pretty nice guy!”
“NICE!? Elfilin…are you sure we’re talking about the same guy here?-“
“Yo, Little Dude!” Magolor suddenly appeared right in front of him, his attention to Elfilin. He was beaming with delight. He pulled out a bright red apple and handed it to Elfilin.
“I promised to give Kirby the best apple, but here’s the SECOND best apple…just for you! Heehee!”
Magolor bounced with excitement as he awaited Elfilin to take it. Elfilin was still slightly caught off guard by Magolor’s sudden appearances but still found himself completely starstruck when he had his full attention. Bandana Waddle Dee watched with slight frustration as Elfilin was completely frozen in awe of Magolor’s presence, his eyes sparkling as if he were about to cry.
Oh, give me a break!…
“Go on, take it!” Magolor handed over the apple to Elfilin. He took a careful look at it. It was much larger than all the others ones and noticeably redder too. It looked delicious! Elfilin held it tightly and smiled at Magolor.
“You’re giving this to me!?” He said, choking back tears.
“Of course! It’s the least I can do! You were so incredibly helpful back there! I couldn’t have done it without you!” Magolor said with a wink.
“Thank you, Magolor! Wow! It looks delicious! Are you sure I can have this?”
“Yep! It’s all yours, my friend! Enjoy it!” Magolor said with a nod. “In fact, why don’t the two of you come over here and sit with us! We were just discussing all the fun we’re going to have tonight!”
“Sure!” Elfilin spun around joyously and floated over to where Kirby was sitting. As Bandana Waddle Dee prepared to follow, he was stopped by a hand on his shoulder.
“Oh, and Bandana Waddle Dee…” Magolor began, his voice low.
He leaned in closer to Bandana Waddle Dee, who was frozen in fear.
“You should know it’s very rude to talk about people behind their back…” he whispered. He took a few steps forward then turned his face slightly towards him.
“Especially when the person you’re talking about hasn’t had a chance to tell their side of the story.”
Magolor smirked at Bandana Waddle Dee for a moment before returning to Kirby and Elfilin, leaving him completely stunned.
Did…Did he hear everything?….
Bandana Waddle Dee nervously approached them. Magolor intensely looked him in the eye as he headed over. He happily pat his hand on the ground next to him.
“Yo! There’s an open seat right next to me, Bandana Waddle Dee!” He giggled.
Bandana Waddle Dee hesitated for a moment. Kirby gave him a puzzled look.
“What’s wrong?” He said.
“Yeah, what’s wrong?” Magolor said slightly giggling.
“N-nothing…sorry…” Bandana Waddle Dee slowly sat down next to Magolor. He gave him a cheeky smile and scooted slightly closer to him.
“You know, We really should talk more, Bandana Waddle Dee.” He said giggling.
Bandana Waddle Dee sighed and turned away from him.
“Alright, then!” Kirby announced with a beaming smile. “Now that Magolor and Elfilin are back, what do you say we-“
KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK!!
The room went silent at the sound of a loud knocking at Kirby’s door.
“Oh, another visitor!? I wonder who it could be!!”
Magolor and Elfilin froze in panic. Elfilin began to tremble anxiously as Kirby approached the door. He looked across to Magolor, who was looking around the room frantically, and then disappeared with his dimensional vanish. Elfilin hunched down and covered his face with his big ears. Bandana Waddle Dee observed them with perplexity.
Kirby opened the door and smiled big.
“Meta Knight! You made it, after all!”
Meta Knight, the mysterious, masked swordsman and longtime friend to Kirby had shown up.
“Good afternoon, Kirby. Can I come in?”
“Of course! Hey, everyone! Meta Knights here for the party!”
“Party?…” Meta Knight looked around the messy room and noticed Bandana Waddle Dee and Elfilin sitting together. Finally Magolor returned from his dimensional vanish appearing next to Kirby. He looked at Meta Knight and groaned.
“Oh, it’s just you. Now the real fun can start. Yippie…” Magolor sulked over to Elfilin and plopped down next to him. Elfilin stared in awe at Meta Knight, his eyes shining brightly.
“Oh, Magolor. You’re here as well.” Meta Knight said.
Magolor gave him an unenthusiastic hand wave.
“Well, I suppose that answers my first question…” He said glaring at him.
“Hey, Meta Knight!” Bandana Waddle Dee said cheerfully.
“Bandana Waddle Dee.” Meta Knight greeted him with a nod.
“It’s great you were able to make it considering Magolor stole your invitat-“
Magolor quickly jabbed Bandana Waddle Dee in the gut, cutting him off before he could finish his sentence.
“Meta Knight! We’re so happy you made it to the party! We’re gonna have lots of fun! Come on, come on!!” Kirby took Meta Knights hand and led him over to where Elfilin was sitting.
“Kirby, I’m not here for any party-“
“Meta Knight, you remember Elfilin, right?”
Elfilin was suddenly face to face with Meta Knight.
“Elfilin. It’s been a while, how have you been?” Meta Knight extended his hand out to Elfilin for a handshake.
“M-Meta Knight!” He stuttered. “Wow! It’s great to see you again!” Elfilin said happily shaking his hand.
“Likewise.” Meta Knight nodded at him then turned his attention to Kirby.
“I apologize for the intrusion but I am not here to hang out. I’m sorry to interrupt the…party, but I just need a quick word then I’ll be on my way.”
“Is everything all right, Meta Knight?” Kirby asked.
“Kirby…I was just in the village and there seemed to be a disturbance at the Farmers Market. Magolor…you were just there. Would you know anything about that?”
Magolor turned away from him, ignoring his question.
Meta Knight then turned to Elfilin. He began to tremble anxiously.
“Elfilin, I believe you were there with Magolor, correct?”
“Y-yes.” Elfilin stammered.
“Did you see anything…strange happen while you were there?”
Elfilin glanced over at Magolor, who was eyeing him intensely. Magolor very subtly shook his head ‘no’ and gave a small ‘thumbs up’ gesture with his hand.
“No, sir. I didn’t see anything strange…it must have happened after we left!”
Bandana Waddle Dee shook his head in anguish.
Oh, Elfilin. Not you, too…
Meta Knight nodded at Elfilin then took a few steps toward Magolor.
“Kirby, the shopkeeper who runs the Fruit Stand was robbed today.”
“What!? Robbed!?” Kirby said with a gasp.
“What happened!? Is anyone hurt!?”
“No one is hurt, thankfully. But it could have gotten ugly had I not been there to clean up the mess after the culprits fled the scene.” He glared angrily at Magolor.
Elfilin sunk lower and lower with every word.
“Oh, when I find out who’s responsible for this!…they’re gonna be sorry!” Kirby said, viciously punching the air.
“Magolor…” Meta Knight began, his voice stern.
“Two sacks of fruit were stolen today. Curious…How many sacks did you take off with, again? It was quite difficult to see, given how fast the two of you were going.”
Magolor continued to ignore him. Kirby approached him angrily.
“Magolor…Don’t tell me you stole everything!” He said.
Elfilin panicked.
“Magolor, I know we’ve discussed this before but if you wish to continue living here in Dream Land you must behave yourself.”
Kirby frowned and glared disappointingly at Magolor. He looked over at Elfilin.
“And don’t be getting Elfilin here caught up in your antics either.”
“Elfilin, is it true? Did you guys steal everything?” Kirby asked.
Elfilin found himself in the hot seat. He swallowed nervously and attempted to speak.
“Kirby, don’t bother questioning Elfilin.” Meta Knight said. “This was all Magolor’s doing... As for the stolen fruit… I took care of the bill.”
He shot Magolor a disapproving look.
“You can pay back me back later.”
“Didn’t you just say you were leaving?” Magolor remarked.
Wow…Magolor and Meta Knight sure don’t seem to like each other very much…
Elfilin observed the tension between the two of them.
In fact…A lot of the folks around here don’t seem to get along with him…Was Bandana Waddle Dee right about him after all?…
Kirby sighed deeply and shook his head in remorse.
“Magolor…Why would you do this?! And to drag Elfilin into it?…”
“It’s not like anyone got hurt. That shopkeeper is such a crybaby. Listen, the only reason why I took off with everything was because I simply forgot my money! I was gonna go back and pay for it, tomorrow! I’ve done it before. He knows I’m good for it.”
“Magolor, if I’m not mistaken the shopkeeper has made it very clear that you are forbidden from his stand.” Meta Knight continued. “Perhaps I could show you the poster in case you’ve forgotten-”
“Hey! Magolor promised to pay for everything, right!? Um… You’re sorry, right? You didn’t mean to do it, did you, Magolor?” Elfilin chimed in.
“That’s right! Desperate times call for desperate measures. Kirby, you know I am always, ALWAYS, more than happy to clean up whatever messes I make. I was gonna tell you the truth eventually…but sadly, I wasn’t given the chance! Thanks, Meta Knight.”
“Oh, You’re quite welcome…And I’ll be seeing you soon to collect what you owe me.” Meta Knight nodded at Magolor and then to Kirby.
“Again, sorry for the interruption, Kirby. I’ll be on my way now so you can return to your party.” Meta Knight approached the door. He turned around once more.
“It was good to see you again, Elfilin. Enjoy your stay here in Dream Land. Magolor…” his voice took on a more serious tone. “Behave yourself.”
Magolor smirked, floated over to him and gently nudged him closer to the door.
“Well, here’s the door, my friend. You’re certainly a busy dude, right?” Magolor opened the front door and smiled. Bandana Waddle Dee, Elfilin and Kirby ran up to the door and waved goodbye.
“See ya around, Meta Knight!” Bandana Waddle Dee called out.
“Thanks for dropping by Meta Knight! Sorry again for all the trouble Magolor caused…” Kirby shot him a look of disdain once again.
Meta Knight approached the door but then stopped again and turned towards Kirby.
“Oh, Kirby…One last thing before I go…”
Magolor groaned in annoyance.
“Tell me…How are you feeling?…” Meta Knight asked.
“Me?…Oh, well…I feel just fine! Why do you ask?”
Meta Knight eyed Magolor.
“No reason. Well, I’ll be on my way then. Enjoy your party.” Meta Knight waved goodbye one last time and walked out the door.
“Bye, Meta Knight!” Elfilin waved.
“Yes, good-BYE!” Magolor slammed the front door shut.
Kirby stomped over to Magolor in a furious rage. To Elfilin's surprise, Magolor sank low onto the ground hiding his face behind hands.
“Magolor! How could you?! What were you thinking doing something like that!?” Kirby yelled.
Magolor peeked one watery eye out from behind his hands.
“Kirby, please forgive me! I promise I meant no harm by any of it! You know me! I wouldn’t just steal something if it wasn’t for a good reason!”
“There’s never a good reason to steal anything, Magolor!”
“Sure, there is! Truth be told, he deserved it. You should have heard the lies he told about you.”
“Oh, knock it off already!” Bandana Waddle Dee said angrily. “You’ve done nothing but cause problems since you got here! Kirby, just make him leave already!”
“No!” Elfilin yelled rushing to Magolor’s side.
“Kirby! He said he’s sorry! Please don’t make him leave!”
Magolor smiled at Elfilin who returned a friendly nod at him.
“Magolor…you can stay…but please, don’t cause any more trouble! We’re just trying to have fun! Promise me you’ll behave yourself?”
“Of course, Kirby! In fact, I’ll be so good, you’ll forget I’m even here. Heeheehee!” He winked.
Of course Kirby’s giving him another chance…
Bandana Waddle Dee sighed.
Elfilin smiled at Magolor and twirled around joyfully.
“That was a close one, huh?!” Elfilin whispered.
“Too close…Thanks for having my back, Little Dude!” Magolor held up his fist. Elfilin looked at it in confusion.
“Come on, don’t leave me hanging!” Magolor took Elfilin’s hand and demonstrated to him how to do a proper “fist-bump”.
“Got it? Now, let’s try it again.” Magolor once again held up his fist. Elfilin smiled and bumped fists with him.
Bandana Waddle Dee shook his head in disappointment.
Oh, Elfilin…I hope you don’t find out who Magolor really is the hard way…
Kirby frantically rummaged around the room, seeming eager to move on to the next activity.
“Well, Kirby, what’s next!?” Magolor said happily.
“Well, it looks like we’ll have to stick around here for the night! But I have a great idea! Why don’t we go for a swim in the lake right outside!” Kirby gathered a bunch of pool toys and excitedly rushed to the door.
Bandana Waddle Dee was slightly irritated that Magolor’s misdeeds in town were seemingly so easily forgiven, but he was also relieved to finally move on from the situation.
Magolor didn’t seem very thrilled at Kirby’s suggestion. Elfilin noticed his apprehension as everyone rushed out the door.
“What’s wrong, Magolor?” He asked.
“Oh, I’m fine. Just…lost in thought, that’s all.” he stared nervously out of Kirby’s window at the lake.
“Well, are you coming?” Elfilin said as he waited at the door for him.
Magolor took a breath breath and turned to him with a big smile.
“Of course! Let’s go!”
Magolor floated happily towards Elfilin, and together, the two of them set out for the lake with Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee.

Chapter Three: Snack Run! 🍎
Heading towards the village on Kirby’s behalf, Magolor and Elfilin flew across Dream Land together. They sped through the green valleys and over the prairies. After a while they came to a stop for a brief moment. From where they were, everything in Dream Land was perfectly visible. Elfilin was in pure astonishment. Magolor smiled and nodded.
“Isn’t it amazing?”
“It sure is!”
“I travel a lot…but this is my home now. It’s my favorite in the whole universe!”
Magolor pointed towards an open field in the distance.
“See that? That’s where Kirby and I first met! He was so quick to help me when I was in trouble!”
“You were in trouble?”
“That’s right. Kirby saved me from a terrible fate…Things got…a little hectic…I thought I was a goner for sure! But that’s a story for another day!” Magolor said with a laugh.
“You know…Kirby saved me once. A couple times actually! He’s so brave! I don’t know what I’d have done without him.”
“Yeah, he really is the best isn’t he? He’s one of the very few people who gave me a second chance.”
“A second chance?”
“Yeah…You see, Little Dude…some folks around here…aren’t quite as welcoming to me as Kirby has been…I guess I didn't really make a good first impression when I first arrived here in Dream Land...”
“Really!?…What happened?”
“Well…let’s just say…” Magolor appeared uncomfortable about the subject. He grew silent and then laughed nervously.
“You know what?…how about I tell you all about that later! Right now, we need to focus on getting that fruit for Kirby!” Magolor floated overhead and surveyed the village.
“Follow me, Little Dude!” They both took off fast through the fields of Dream Land. Magolor showed Elfilin around the Whispy Woods, showed him the Float Islands down by the oceans, and took him through the famous Bubbly Clouds. Elfilin was taken aback by the splendor of it all.
“Wow…everything here is so beautiful!” he said.
“I couldn’t agree more! I can definitely see why Kirby loves this place so much.” Magolor looked around and nodded. He pointed towards an area below and smiled.
“There’s our stop, Little Dude. You’ll love this place! It’s the real deal!” Magolor lead Elfilin towards what appeared to be a small outdoor kiosk selling various fruits and vegetables. There were crates of fruit for sale everywhere. Oranges, bananas, peaches, and plenty of apples, which Kirby specifically requested.
“If you want the best fruit Dream Land has to offer this is the place to go!” Magolor and Elfilin began browsing the vast selection. The shopkeeper in charge noticed Magolor and his expression soured.
“Oh, no! Not you again!” He said stomping towards them.
“How many times do I have to tell you, Magolor, you are not allowed at my shop!”
He flailed his arms at Magolor in an attempt to shoo him away. Elfilin backed away nervously.
“Yo, relax! I’ll have you know, I’m here on official Dream Land business!” Magolor exclaimed proudly.
“You were sent by the King!?”
“Nope, even better! I’ve been sent by Kirby himself!”
“Kirby sent you?…I’ll never understand why he chooses to associate with someone like you!”
“Kirby and I are best friends as a matter of fact! I’m actually here to pick up some fruit for him! So…what do ya got today?”
“Nothing for you! Beat it!” The shopkeeper yelled angrily. Elfilin scurried to over to Magolor’s side.
“Magolor, maybe we should go…” he tried to pull him away but Magolor was undeterred.
“Don’t worry, Little Dude, I’ll handle this.” Elfilin stood back and watched as Magolor boldly approached the shopkeeper.
"After everything Kirby has done for the people of this country, why would you deny him the delicious food he craves?"
"If Kirby needs fruit, he can come here and get it himself, just like he does every day! Why would he send someone like you here! Doesn’t he know you’re banned?!” The shopkeeper then pointed to a placard displayed near the front of the shop. It said DO NOT ALLOW ON PREMISES above a crude picture of Magolor. He glared at the unflattering depiction of himself and sighed deeply. He turned away from the shopkeeper and spoke softly.
“Well…I promised Kirby I wouldn’t say anything but…” Magolor picked up an apple and clutched it tightly.
“Truth be told….Kirby is….dying!” Magolor said dramatically throwing his arms in the air.
“D-dying!?” The shopkeeper exclaimed.
“That’s right! Kirby is deathly ill. Why, he’s bedridden even as we speak.”
“But…he was just here yesterday! He looked fine to me!”
“Oh, he took a turn for the worst this morning! It breaks my heart to see him in such a state. I’ve actually been staying with him and taking care of him during his time of need. It’s not easy but…that’s what friends are for!” Magolor said with a determined expression on his face. Elfilin stood by watching with a puzzled look on his face.
….Kirby isn’t sick? Why is Magolor lying about something like this?…
Magolor continued his dramatics.
“Why, just this morning, when he finally mustered enough strength to speak…he took my hand…”
Magolor then dramatically took the shopkeepers hand in his own.
“He looked at me with those big, blue eyes…He said…Magolor…my dearest friend…you’ve taken such good care of me! The only thing that can save me now is a delicious piece of fruit! A red, juicy apple! Then, and only then will I have the strength to carry on! Please, Magolor…do me this favor…my closest friend…” Magolor began to choke back tears. The shopkeeper rolled his eyes.
“Oh, cut it out, Magolor! I’m not buying your fake story or your fake tears!”
Magolor clenched his fists in anger.
“I wouldn’t lie about something like this!” He then turned to Elfilin.
“You’ll back me up, right Little Dude?”
Elfilin was caught off guard by Magolors sudden interjection.
“Oh…well…um…” Elfilin nervously approached the two of them. He nodded at the shopkeeper with a smile.
“Hello sir, my name is Elfilin! I’m also Kirby’s best-…I’m one of Kirby’s friends! Magolor is, uh…” he glanced over at Magolor’s who was giving him a desperate expression.
“He’s telling the truth!…Kirby is..he’s very sick! He asked us to come here and get him some fruit! He’s really looking forward to it!” The shopkeeper looked bewildered at Elfilin.
"Is he really telling the truth? Kirby is seriously ill?" Elfilin returned his gaze to Magolor, who nodded with tears in his eyes.
“…Yes.” Elfilin looked down sadly.
“Well…I am very sorry to hear what has become of Kirby! Does the King know about this?!” The shopkeeper asked.
Elfilin glanced to Magolor for direction once again, and he promptly nodded his head "yes."
“…Yeah…he knows…in fact..” Magolor gestured for Elfilin to continue his story.
“In fact the King has already visited Kirby and sent his best wishes!” Magolor smiled as he gave Elfilin a thumbs up. Elfilin returned the smile before soon returning to his solemn demeanor.
“Well…then by all means, please take what you’ll need. However…I’ll only serve you-Not him!” The shopkeeper angrily pointed at Magolor who appeared to be putting eye-drops in his eyes in order to mimic crying. He then dropped the bottle and attempted to act like he didn’t see it.
“Go stand over there!” He said shooing Magolor aside. He angrily rolled his eyes and backed away from the kiosk leaving Elfilin make the purchase himself.
“Oh, dear. Poor, Kirby…” the shopkeeper began as he handed Elfilin a large sack.
“I’ll have to come visit him tonight and send him my wishes.”
“That won’t be necessary!” Magolor shouted from afar. “As Kirby’s caretaker I’m allowing only close family and friends and I’m sorry to say you don’t make the cut!”
The shopkeeper scowled at Magolor but ignored him as Elfilin filled his bag full of all kinds of different fruits.
Look how delicious everything here looks! Kirby’s sure gonna love all this!
Elfilin filled his sack to the brim and waved to the shopkeeper and smiled happily.
“Thank you so much! Kirby is gonna be so happy!” Elfilin turned away to leave but the shopkeeper stopped him.
“Woah there, young man!…You can’t just take all that for free! Here’s your bill!” He handed Elfilin a small receipt. He took it and and looked up at him sadly.
“…A bill?…But I…I don’t have any money!” Elfilin said. The shopkeeper nodded his head slowly and took the sack of fruit away from Elfilin. Magolor glanced over with discontent.
“I’m sorry, young man. But if you don’t have any money you’re gonna have to put all this back…”
Magolor grew furious as the shopkeeper took away Elfilin’s fruit.
Who does this jerk think he think he is? After everything Kirby has done for the people of this country?…
Elfilin panicked as he sought to come up with a solution.
“But…what about Kirby!” He exclaimed loudly.
“Don’t you care that he’s sick? You wouldn’t deprive Kirby of food over something as silly as money would you?”
“Alright, I tell you what…” the shopkeeper handed Elfilin one single red apple.
“Kirby can have this apple for free. That’s all I’m willing to give you! Look, I’m sorry to hear about Kirby not feeling well. But this is a business! I can’t give someone as gluttonous as Kirby free fruit! The guy’s great and all- but I just can’t afford it! I’m confident he’ll pull through. He always does!”
Magolor began to tremble with anger.
ONE APPLE!?!…Thats the best he can do for someone as important as Kirby!?…and on his death bed no less!…
He clenched his fists and scowled angrily at the shopkeeper.
Perhaps this moron should be taught a lesson…
Elfilin was well aware of Kirby's voracious appetite, and one apple wouldn’t be enough for him. Not by a long shot. Not to mention Bandana Waddle Dee as well. He couldn’t come back to them empty handed like this.
“Magolor…what should I do?” He whispered over to Magolor but to Elfilins surprise he was gone.
“Magolor?…” he looked around desperately but it appeared that Magolor had vanished completely.
Elfilin felt the ground begin to shake. He could hear gasps coming from behind him. The shopkeeper and Elfilin both turned around to see all of the shop's fruit crates were floating in the air.
“Wha?!…What is the meaning of this!?” The shopkeeper exclaimed. He looked up and saw a black hole above his shop was beginning to suck up all of the fruit and sending everything else flying all over the place. Elfilin froze in panic.
Woah, is that a black hole!? Where did that come from!?
Elfilin began to panic as he frantically searched for Magolor.
“Magolor!?! Where are you!?” He yelled over the chaos. Fruit was being flung everywhere, and the sky darkened to the point that it appeared that Dream Land was about to be hit by a devastating storm. Elfilin froze in fear as this storm reminded him of that terrifying moment he nearly watched two planets collide. Citizens who were out and about began to panic as it appeared Dream Land was now under attack.
What am I gonna do!?…Did that black hole suck up Magolor somehow and take him away!? Oh, no!…This is terrible!…
Just as Elfilin began to panic over what happened to Magolor, he suddenly appeared right next to him holding a large sack stuffed full of fruit. He then handed Elfilin an empty one. Magolor wasn’t phased one bit by the turmoil going on around them. In fact, he almost seemed amused by it.
“Here, Little Dude!” He whispered as he gently nudged Elfilin towards a pile of displaced fruit on the ground.
“Magolor! You’re okay!! Hey, did you see that black hole back there?! What should we do!?”
“Oh, don’t worry about that! Just grab some fruit and let’s go!” Magolor said anxiously.
Elfilin gave him a worried glance.
“You want me to…steal this?”
“It’s not stealing! It’s for a good cause! Besides, that ingrate tried to charge someone like Kirby money when Kirby deserves to have anything he desires for free! Wouldn’t you agree, Little Dude?”
“Magolor, I don’t know…Stealing?…“ Elfilin looked down nervously.
“He won’t even notice we took anything! As you can see, he seems to have his hands full at the moment…” Magolor motioned to the shopkeeper, who was busy picking up all the fruit and vegetables that had fallen all over the place. He was paying no attention to Magolor and Elfilin.
“Magolor…I don’t think I can do this…”
“Hurry, Little Dude! Kirby’s waiting! We can’t let him down, can we!?” Magolors eyes shined bright as he leaned in closer to Elfilin’s face.
“He won’t be mad! I promise!” Magolor winked at him. Elfilin peered deep into his eyes and sensed some kind of sincerity in them. He knew Magolor's heart was in the right place, but this didn’t feel like the right way to convey it…
“After all” Magolor continued, “We didn't cause that mysterious black hole to appear! Yikes, what a freak accident! We should return to Kirby’s house fast before something like that happens again! Here…I’ll help you fill this sack!” Magolor snatched the sack Elfilin was holding and quickly loaded it with as much fruit as the bag could handle. He handed it back to Elfilin and smiled happily. It was so heavy that Elfilin struggled to take hold of it.
“I think Kirby will be very pleased!” Magolor said with a nod.
"Hey, you two!" The shopkeeper and other nearby residents became aware of the two of them attempting to flee with the stolen fruit.
Magolor took Elfilin by the hand and quickly sped off with the sacks of fruit in tow. The shopkeeper chased after them swinging his fists angrily in the air.
“CURSE YOU, MAGOLORRRRR!!!” He yelled.
Magolor stopped for a brief moment and turned to laugh at the shopkeeper’s tantrum.
“Thank you for the fruit! Kirby sends his regards!” He waved and then quickly sped off once again.
Elfilin and Magolor both flew as fast as they could through Dream Land. Magolor moved quickly, but Elfilin was able to keep up. They drove further and further away from the village, eventually coming to a halt to collect their breath. Magolor smiled at Elfilin who seemed to be slightly distraught from the ordeal.
“Nice job back there, Little Dude!” Magolor said as he pat Elfilin on the head.
“Look at all this delicious fruit! I sure hope you’re hungry!” Magolor giggled as he rummaged through his ill-gotten gains.
Elfilin sighed, regretfully looking down at the sack of stolen fruit.
“What’s the problem?…Aren’t you excited about all these goodies we managed to snag?”
“Well…I guess…it’s just that…”
“The audacity of that jerk…to charge Kirby for fruit…has he forgotten what Kirby has done for the people this land?! Without Kirby there would be no fruit to sell! It wasn’t ideal…but it had to be done! Maybe next time he won’t be so foolish…” Magolor said snickering.
"What a mess that thing caused...” Elfilin was still very concerned about the sudden black hole that appeared earlier. “Should we go back and help that guy?” He said staring anxiously behind them.
“And keep Kirby waiting?!” Magolor exclaimed with a gasp.
"We're already taking much longer than I expected! Thanks to that ungrateful moron running that fruit stand, Kirby could be suffering from starvation already!" He said while feverishly pacing about.
"Should we tell Kirby about that black hole we saw, Magolor? Maybe he’ll know where it came from!”
“NO!-I mean…We don’t need to get Kirby concerned with something so trivial when he’s trying to relax and enjoy himself with his friends!”
“But that black hole-“
“Little Dude…trust me. I live here. I see things like this all the time. That black hole you saw back there? That was nothing…Folks around here are numb to it at this point.”
“Numb to it? Really?” Elfilin said a bit surprised.
“Oh, sure…and that was just a little one, too! It’s nothing these folks haven’t seen before! Believe me, Little Dude, there’s nothing to worry about.”
Magolor gave Elfilin a comforting nod. Something about the way Magolor looked at him made him feel like everything was going to be all right. The way he handled such a frightening situation with such quick thinking. He admired that Magolor seemed to always have Kirby’s best interests at heart. He could clearly see he cared a lot about Kirby. But…he couldn’t help but feel like there was something more to Magolor than he was leading on. He suspected that Magolor may be keeping something a secret…something…dark. Could it be the circumstances surrounding his meeting with Kirby? When that was brought up earlier, he did become rather quiet...and Bandana Waddle Dee has made several remarks about Magolor’s character as well as not seeming to get along with him…What was Magolor trying to hide? Elfilin was determined to find out.
“So what do you say, Little Dude. Ready to head back?” Magolor said with a smile.
Elfilin nodded, gripping the fruit sack tightly.
“I’m right behind you, Magolor!”
“I’m gonna go even faster this time! Think you can handle it?” Magolor said with a sly grin.
“I can show you some of my cool moves!” Magolor said as he twirled about.
“I can handle it! In fact…” Elfilin laughed and then quickly sped off leaving Magolor behind.
Magolor gasped as he watched Elfilin fly off without him. Elfilin giggled as he flew as fast as he could towards Kirby’s house. Magolor sped past him not too long after. He quickly surpassed Elfilin who in turn used all his energy to catch back up with Magolor. He finally caught back up with him and they flew side by side down the fields of the countryside. Elfilin cast a glance over to Magolor, who was staring straight ahead. He then noticed Elfilin watching him. He winked at him and took his hand. Magolor then sped up significantly the two of them began to their journey back to Kirby’s house with their newly acquired fruit.
