Learning About What Killed Lake Okeechobee and is still killing it
Today I am including notes from: Draft, A Summary of Progress of the Special Project to Prevent the Eutrophication of Lake Okeechobee, 1975, inspired by my last post. This draft report eventually led to de-chanalizing a substantial portion of the Kissimmee River, the halting of backpumping by the Everglades Agricultural Area, the beginning of Best Management Practices for Agriculture, and…

The Best News of Last Week
⚡ - Charging Towards a More Electrifying Future
1. The Kissimmee River has been brought back to life—and wildlife is thriving
Tumblr media
The Kissimmee River in Florida was straightened in the 1960s, causing a sharp decline in wildlife and ecological problems. But in the 1990s, a $1 billion restoration project was initiated to restore the river's natural state.
Today, nearly half of the river has been restored, wetlands have been reestablished and rehydrated, and wildlife has returned, including rare and threatened species. Already the biological impact of the project has become clear. As the wetlands have come back, so have the birds.
2. Plastic wrap made from seaweed withstands heat and is compostable
Tumblr media
A cling film made from an invasive seaweed can withstand high temperatures yet is still easily compostable. The material could eventually become a sustainable choice for food packaging.
Scientists started with a brown seaweed called sargassum. Sargassum contains long, chain-like molecules similar to those that make up conventional plastic, which made it a good raw material. The researchers mixed it with some acids and salts to get a solution full of these molecules, then blended in chemicals that thickened it and made it more flexible and pliable.
3. An Eagle Who Adopted a Rock Becomes a Real Dad to Orphaned Eaglet
Tumblr media
Murphy, a bald eagle that had been showing fatherly instincts, has been sharing an enclosure with an eaglet that survived a fall from a tree during a storm in Ste. Genevieve. Murphy, his rock gone by then, took his role as foster parent seriously. He soon began responding to the chick’s peeps, and protecting it.
And when, as a test, the keepers placed two plates of food in front of the birds — one containing food cut into pieces that the chick could eat by itself, and another with a whole fish that only Murphy could handle — the older bird tore up the fish and fed it to the eaglet.
4. World's largest battery maker announces major breakthrough in energy density
Tumblr media
In one of the most significant battery breakthroughs in recent years, the world’s largest battery manufacturer CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg which it says will go into mass production this year.
“The launch of condensed batteries will usher in an era of universal electrification of sea, land and air transportation, open up more possibilities of the development of the industry, and promote the achieving of the global carbon neutrality goals at an earlier date,” the company said in a presentation at Auto Shanghai on Thursday.
This could be huge. Electric jets and cargo ships become very possible at this point.
5. Cat with '100% fatal' feline coronavirus saved by human Covid-19 medicine
Tumblr media
A beloved household cat has made an “astonishing” recovery from a usually fatal illness, thanks to a drug made to treat Covid-19 in humans – and a quick-thinking vet.
Anya, the 7-year-old birman cat, was suffering from feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a “100% fatal” viral infection caused by feline coronavirus. That was, until Auckland vet Dr Habin Choi intervened, giving Anya an antiviral used to treat Covid-19 called molnupiravir.
6. Kelp forests capture nearly 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually
Tumblr media
Kelp forests provide an estimated value of $500 billion to the world and capture 4.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from seawater each year. Most of kelp’s economic benefits come from creating habitat for fish and by sequestering nitrogen and phosphorus.
7. Medical Marijuana Improved Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms in 87% of Patients
Tumblr media
Medical cannabis (MC) has recently garnered interest as a potential treatment for neurologic diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD). 87% of patients were noted to exhibit an improvement in any PD symptom after starting medical cannabis. Symptoms with the highest incidence of improvement included cramping/dystonia, pain, spasticity, lack of appetite, dyskinesia, and tremor.

Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:
At the heart of the vast watershed that forms Florida’s fragile Everglades is Lake Okeechobee. A century ago the water of the state’s largest lake spilled effortlessly beyond its southern shore, flowing eventually into the sawgrass prairies of the river of grass.
Today the natural course of the water has been altered forever by some of the most complex water management infrastructure in the world. This infrastructure has drained the river of grass to a fraction of its former size and made modern Florida possible. A $21 billion federal and state restoration effort underway in the Everglades is among the most ambitious of its kind in human history.
A new plan for managing Lake Okeechobee is aimed at recapturing some of this drained water and restoring a more natural flow throughout the watershed, two objectives that, if achieved, could help alleviate yet another prominent environmental problem facing the state: toxic algae.
The Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM), implemented earlier this month, represents a significant shift in the lake’s management. Coming after a recent restoration of the 143-mile earthen dike encircling the lake, the plan is designed to more equitably balance the needs of the watershed and stakeholders tied to it, rather than prioritizing flood control above all else, said Tim Gysan, LOSOM project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
“At some point most Floridians are touched by water that moves through Lake Okeechobee,” he said. “The management of Lake Okeechobee is very important.”
The 730-square-mile lake is situated near the center of the watershed that encompasses much of the peninsula, beginning in central Florida at the headwaters of the meandering Kissimmee River. The watershed also includes the sawgrass marshes south of the lake and Florida Bay, at the peninsula’s southernmost tip. Today some 2,200 miles of canals, 2,100 miles of levees and berms, 84 pump stations and 778 water control structures sustain the river of grass, which is responsible for the drinking water of some 9 million Floridians.
Notably, the new lake plan likely will bring some relief from the toxic algae that has gripped the peninsula during the past several years by addressing one of the biggest problems hindering the natural course of water in the Everglades: releases from Lake Okeechobee in an unnatural pattern east and west rather than south, as the water once flowed.
The noxious blooms have choked rivers, sullied beaches, sickened Floridians and left wildlife belly-up. The discharges were necessary during times of high water to protect the aging dike surrounding the lake, but the releases threaten the delicate estuaries on either side of the lake and, during the summer months, can spread toxic algae. Because the algae thrive in warm temperatures, the problem is poised to get worse as the global climate warms.
Now that a $1.8 billion rehabilitation of the dike is complete, the Army Corps will have more flexibility to hold more water in the lake, reducing the harmful discharges. It is the first time a lake plan has acknowledged the risk of toxic algae or recognized the need to send more water south for the Everglades, said Eve Samples, executive director of Friends of the Everglades, an advocacy group. Her group said the plan allows for releases when the lake level climbs above 16.5 to 17 feet.

so many longposts going around abt disney and how great disney is for sticking it to desantis and how we all want disney to beat him or something. like ok. it's funny i'll give it that. but the takeaway for a lot of ppl rn seems to be that disney should (?) and in fact must (???) maintain the rcid -- reedy creek improvement district, which is to say, the political and geographical boundaries by which it self-governs -- and like. tapping the FUCKING sign again abt how the rcid is located in the kissimmee river basin in fl and how disney's self-governance has allowed them to destroy that ecosystem in a way that has led to ecological degradation of many surrounding ecosystems, up to and including the everglades. and that's just environmental impact! like not to mention the way disney has impacted industry in the state, how it has directly contributed to the insane cost of living and how it has mistreated and underpaid workers for decades -- which it gets away with in large part due to the protections baked into its self-governance! this is a corporation that has absolutely thrived on its ability to escape regulatory legislature and it's not fighting for you or anyone you care about. it is only fighting to maintain the power it uses to abuse the state of florida.

My latest newsletter is out – link in bio – and it’s jam-packed with roadside Americana news. I discuss the closure of the iconic Neil’s Coffee Shop on Manhatan’s Upper East Side and share photos from my last visit there. What will become of this place? I then head to Florida, with troubling news of a fire at the beloved “Big Orange” in Kissimmee, but they hope to reopen soon. Plus, a neon supermarket sign is being restored in Manhattan, and up in Hyde Park, New York, you have a chance to run your very own drive-in theater – owned by the National Park Service! Plus, Dutch Haven is back in the news, and I have over a dozen more stories in the newsletter, including the closure of River View East, a sacred stop on any New Jersey hot dog tour. Did you know there is a Gaylord in Kissimmee FL? We normally go to the Gaylord in Nashville and have been to the one in DC BUT this one so close to the Disney Parks just hits different.
Here are the PERKS:
- The atrium is filled with FL style. Authentic plants of the FL climate. Sounds of the swamp and smells of a everglades experience. There are even real gators with interactive feeding and a snake house that was so cute to see some local critters up close.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- The WATERPARK was insane. So many pools, slides, a lazy river that's not lazy at all but so much fun, hot tubs, tons of loungers and delish bars/restaurants by the pools. They provide the towels and all the fun!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- The spa was another perk...if you are Ambassador Elite with Marriott you can access the spa complimentary! They provide you with a Robe, slippers and locker and you have access to their quiet room with refreshments, steam room, sauna, and rainfall showers. They had a great spa service menu with decent prices.
Tumblr media
- You can use Marriott points for a room stay here but even if you dont...the cost of this hotel is comparable to the mid level Disney Resorts (Coranado, Swan/Dolphin, Port Orleans) and SO much nicer!!! We had a suite for the 4 of us with a full dining table and tons of space.
Tumblr media
- There are several dining options on site including a sports bar appropriate for kiddos, a Cafe and Jambajuice!
- There are shuttles you can arrange for the parks since the Magic Kingdom is only 10 min away. Of course an Uber is also an easy option since it's so close.
Downsides:
- You have to pay for parking, of course like most resorts.
- Bellman Service takes up to 30 min so you need to plan to have anything you need with you.
- Most the restaurants close earlier so late night your options are limited.
- If you are looking for a resort bombarded with Disney decor, this is not your place. As a matter of fact, you hardly know you are 10 min from a park. Everything is FL oriented, not Disney oriented.
We LOVED our stay and 100% will be back!!!!
