Godzilla minus one was set in 1946, following the end of World War 2, and centred around a man called Shiraishi, a failed Kamikaze pilot. It tackles themes of PTSD, as well as survivors guilt, which makes it a gut-wrenching watch at times, but the entire film was paced so skillfully, that the watch time just flowed exceptionally well. This film was my favourite of all the movies I watched that were released this year, mostly because it was the perfect blend of drama and monster-y-ness. If there was too much on the Godzilla, and less focus on the characters and their relationships, I definitely would’ve enjoyed this less. That being said, I do wish more was said about the origins of Godzilla, because I haven’t seen any of the previous films, so I wasn’t really up to speed on what was going on with that part, although I was able to just quickly google it.
Past lives
Past Lives was such a special movie, and after I watched it, I cried for around 10 minutes straight. It was such a well-made film for a first-time debut feature (by Celine Song), and the way it was so delicate and personal, but also direct was really special. It’s reminiscent of ‘In the mood for love’ by Wong Kai Wai, in the way that it’s centred around love, but it was so enjoyable to watch, I really felt connected to the characters' experiences.
Magic mike
Magic Mike was hilarious to watch with friends, with all the raunchy scenes, but it was so fun to view and talk about as well. The storyline was mostly bare-minimum, but still more enjoyable than many movies this year, as the characters (some of them) still had some depth and were able to grow as the movie progresses. I do have a bone to pick with the writing though. The dialogue of many of the scenes is so botched and really jilted/just cringey.
Mission impossible
The most recent Mission Impossible was super fun to watch, as I’m an avid fan of the whole series, although some of the intense stunts seemed a little superfluous. I found it an enjoyable watch, even though some of the character deaths were unnecessary.
The killer
The killer was sort of like a movie that you can sit through all the way through, and enjoy, but not really ever watch it again. I like these sorts of action movies, like The Gray Man, and John Wick, which are sort of enjoyable to watch, but aren’t ever really on my list of things to watch.
