s6 episode 16 "alpha" thoughts

yaaay!! it’s scully and mulder time!! and it seems they will be fighting some sort of evil wolf!!

i’m mad tonight, so i hope this episode is good, or else my hating will be extra potent.

(author's note: NO NEED FOR POTENT HATING!!!!! A CERTIFIED GOOD EPISODE!!! REJOICE!!!!)

the last episode was very good however, so i’m not sure if i should expect a mini banger streak, or a flop to be tossed in there.

post-episode thoughts: stay tuned until the end where i spend about the length of a FULL ESSy analyzing this episode, our agent's reactions to conflict with the world and each other, and wolf logic. hell yeah. THAT's how you know it's a good one. and bonus points for dog. spooooky dog.

WHEW! and protective scully! and mulder drowing in guilt!!! HELLO!!?!?! oh, i LOVE those subjects on their own, and together they make me sing.

well! let us not speculate anymore on what may or may not happen, and and instead dive right in!

spoooooky, vaguely asian music plays on the freighter t’ien kou. some men are speaking in cantonese and looking at a big box that has something inside. this guy says whatever is inside it tried to bite him! maybe it’s a tiger, says the other guy. i hope not. because it doesn’t look like he has any air holes. and mammals need those.

they peek inside… and see the eyes of a canine creature. see? not a tiger, says the first guy. but the beast LUNGES in his box!!! and can you blame him?? you’re bothering him!!

oh no…. it keeps going…. and then it settles. the first guy smacks the box once more. and then again. but are the locks still locked?!

the first guy thinks they killed it!! maybe you should LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!

oh noooo…. he opens the locks to check…. BAD IDEA. it doesn’t even have air holes!!! if it died, it wouldn’t even look like it was your fault, man!!!

they lift the box open….. and then we hear sirens. not super promising.

other men are arriving on the boat. the captain is here. he says two of his men are gone!! and a guy named detweiler is also here!! he says he is the “owner of this cargo”. bro, where did you find and purchase your secret wolf? he insists the animal needs care, and it appears to be bleeding from beneath its cage.

ah. well. it seems the wolf ate the men. and that is why there is blood. but where did he go?!

detweiler, why did you take this wild beast from its habitat? could it not be studied in its environment? are you trying to document a new species? or buy it for yourself? i am intrigued…. you seem evil.

i just finished a book about extinct animals, so i have weird species on the brain. maybe he rediscovered an old type of wolf!!

FBI time. it's 7 at night. mulder pins up some gnarly photos of the corpses on the freighter.

oh, scully is here! “aren’t you going home?” “i am home” <- NERD!!! NERD!!! but aww. they have their basement back!!

“i’m just feathering the nest” <- LMAO who says that?! 😭😭

at least he decorates here. his house just has those little posters.

she’s intrigued!!! “mind if i ask the cause of death?” well of course he does not mind, silly!!!

LMAO, SHE’S HOOKED ALREADY: “a dog?” yeah girl, you know it’s suspicious as hell.

“a dog dog?” i'm giggling. and kicking my feet.

BAHAHA, she wants to know what happened to the dog. as she comes in to read the case.

“dog gone. dog gone” this is so sad…. evil dog on the loose and it’s not even his fault he’s evil 💔😢

“doggone” “yeah, i got it; did anybody, um, examine the victim, mulder?” <- BAHAHAHA, she has no time for your stupid puns. she is in autopsy mode.

bite wounds are rarely a cause of death, says doctor scully!! they lead to blood loss!! but not death by itself!!

“mulder, i don’t have to tell you how absolutely and completely wrong that seems” <- LMAOOOO, nah. nope. but i’m sure he’d love to hear it. while he pins up photos of dead men to the wall.

and why are they like sitting on top of each other as they have this conversation…..?? nerds. NERDS!!! they can’t resist each other.

yeah. good point, scully. it would be hard for a dog to lock a guy in a cage.

“you’re not gonna tell me a dog did this” (mulder nods) “bad dog”, he whispers

BAHAHA, he totally ensnared her with an inaccurate death report. i’m giggling. he knows he very well.

in california, a dog is barking. her name is jojo. jojo is in this guy's yard. but a large looking wolfy thing stands outside the gate!! no!! eat a squirrel, not another dog, wolfy thing!! that is basically cannibalism!!

jojo’s owner lets her inside the house, and then he goes to investigate the beast…. but it isn’t there when he looks over the fence!! oh, i know a jump is coming… the guy walks away and back into the house… but where did jojo go?!?!

NO!!!! he goes to see jojo, and she is laying on the floor covered in blood!!! the wolf got in his HOUSE!!! he tells the wolf to go away, but it has bright red eyes and it eats him!!!

bro. i was rooting for the wolf/dog thing. but he eats a helpless golden retriever, and i can’t root for him in this situation. there are many creatures that can be eaten that are not dogs. eat a squirrel! a bird!

a golden retriever has no chance against a big bad wolf!!! that’s just picking on someone far weaker!!! it's sick!!

we must catch this evil wolf…. and his twisted sense of morals...

well, don’t worry, because mulder and scully are here on the ship where the wolf was imported to investigate. i feel more secure already.

scully peeks inside the box.

LMAO... mulder HAS, at some point, owned a dog. this is information i shall store in my pocket.

you think it was growing up? you think it was when he was a teenager? because he doesn't seem overly fond of dogs in this day and age. i recall how he bullied queequeg. did he have a dog friend as a boy? did they get along? did they NOT get along, and that is why he seems to prefer cats?

oooo!! mulder’s ears perk up when he hears from the cop that this detweiler guy who owns the beast is a cryptozoologist.

oh, trust that he knows what those scientists study: “animals that aren’t supposed to exist, like the sasquatch and the ogopogo and the abominable snowman-“ “don’t mind him”, scully says to the cop; “he’ll go on forever”

LMAOOOOO, that is so endearing to me. also, i need to look up what that second thing is. it’s a lake monster!!!

dr. detweiler is here! he thinks the animal was stolen because it is very valuable. “arguably a priceless specimen”

he says it’s a “wanshang dhole”. SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN EXTINCT FOR THE LAST 150 YEARS!!!

I’M CLAPPING AND CHEERING!!! my niche interests!!! they are aligning!!!! SO WELL!!!! and mulder just happens to know how long this species has been extinct off the top of his head, which is also adorable!!

wow. i finished that book on extinct animals literally yesterday, but they’ve been a fascinating subject to me for years now. but i’ve never heard of this one!! oh wait, maybe it’s not real. let us consult the internet.

no results on a "wanshang dhole". BUT!

wikipedia says that the tien shan dhole (MOST LIKELY) went extinct in 1946. so the writers are making some clear parallels to a real type of beast.

i love when something says “most likely” extinct. because maybe they’re still out there… probably not. but maybe…

oh, splendid. i cannot wait to go into depth on that later.

dr. detweiler says he was on the expedition that found the dhole. and when mulder says well, it seems to have killed people, he’s all NO NO NO, he does NOT kill people. he SCAVENGES! he wants this dhole's name cleared.

and then! news of a dog attack arrives!!!

mulder peers over the fence where we saw the dude and his golden retriever earlier. his name was jake. he died, the bite marks match those found on the dead men from the boat, and the beast ate his hand. well. maybe some new evolutionary stuff has gone down since the last time the dhole was recorded, and now he is an active hunter. a lot has happened in the 150 years between 1999 and 1849! so many things!!! in chinese history, about 500 years of stuff went down in those 150 years!

perhaps dr. detweiler was involved with stealing the beast. scully thinks it had to have been kept inside. but we know this is not the case!

“i think we’re speaking in too common terms about an animal we’re calling a dog” <- LMAOOOOO. yeah, get technical with it buddy.

(slow scully voice) “so, you’re taking about a dog that has human intelligence”

LMAOOO, he thinks it was covering up crime scene evidence. wow. so much really has gone down. also, that “you get a biscuit, scully” line made my skin crawl. somehow, that is worse than him propositioning her the episode before.

scully adjusts to this claim of a dog with human brain power quickly, though. she is used to this sort of thing by now. “well, even if there were such an animal, where would we even begin to look for one?”

they go to visit the local kennels! look at the dogs!! they bark at their arrival. do they think it's going dog hunting?

NOOOO! there’s a lady putting up a fence for the owner of the kennel, because she’s been having coyote problems. leave her dogs alone!

wait. is this beast a shape-shifter? the mythology of this non-existent creature was not explained. but i just got a deep sense that the dhole will be taking human form...

LMAOOOOO, SCULLY TELLS THIS LADY FIXING THE FENCE THAT MULDER DOESN’T LISTEN AND HE CHEWS ON THE FURNITURE BAHAHAHA. AND HE GIGGLES AT THAT!! AND SHE SMILES AT HER OWN JOKE!

why did he just grab her like that… okay. but he says that this lady who owns the kennel, karin, is a canine expert. she lived with them in the wild. of course he would know that.

OHHH! he says that she told him about this case, and scully IMMEDIATELY gets defensive, BAHAHA “oh, so you two are chummy?” <- ohhh my god. i love jealous scully.

OH SHIT!!! she turns on a lamp in karin's room, and finds the same “i want to believe” poster on her wall that they had in their old office!!!

mulder seems surprised by this. but as soon as it is revealed, karin finally enters, bringing with her 5 dogs!! and they settle right away!!! okay. queen of training!

she immediately closes the blinds that mulder has just opened up, and doesn’t say a word to them. he looks like a fan boy. she says she wishes she’d known he was coming- she doesn’t get many visitors.

karin answers a few questions, but then says “is there any other reason you came here?”, and mulder takes his cue to head out of there.

is SHE the shapeshifting beast?

SCULLY IS SO SUSPICIOUS, LMAOOOOO. she asks AGAIN if she’s a friend of his, and he says they met online- “two professionals exchanging information” <- BAHAHA if he is trying to not sound suspicious, he is failing

(scully is visibly trying to calculate whatever the hell is going on)

it's like she's asking: do you have a lot of online friends who barely talk when you meet up? do you have other friends? WHAT AREN'T YOU TELLING ME?

something on the streets somewhere has been scavenging! no, man with a stick, you will want to run!!

ah!! he finds the bitten off hand from jake!!! and then he descends deeper…. into some sort of steamy room. something thumps!! he calls out to the dude who walks out, saying he is looking for a dog.

AHAHA! the man SHAPESHIFTS into a wolf-like thing!!! i knew it!!! and he has the scary red eyes!!! RIP this fish and wildlife man!!!

scully and mulder arrive the next morning. the cop (later revealed to be named cohn, btw) says they need to arrest that “crypto son of a bitch” detweiler that shipped the dog over. well. yeah. at the very best, what he did was incredibly irresponsible. who knows what kind of diseases the "dhole" could bring over? and now it's out and killing people, too!

oh, but cohn says that he wants to kill the beast. he says it doesn’t matter about catching it. oh….. well. he will probably just shapeshift again.

not sure i fully endorse killing the last of a nearly extinct species, but if it is actually a shapeshifting human, i suppose that makes things more complicated.

karin enters!!! “i don’t think wolfwoman is here to speak to me on this; i’ll take a look at the body” (scully goes on to investigate) LMAOOOO, damn. she is not giving this woman any chances.

mulder asks why it would outsmart or trick a human. karin says it would be very remarkable for a canine to kill for sport. and dr. detweiler here claims to have caught one before- maybe he can do it again.

“do you know him?” “no, but i dislike him already” <- bahaha, karin's real as hell for that. and for making that “dog eats dogcatcher” joke with a straight face.

detweiler says there is NO EVIDENCE it is his animal doing all of the killing, and that they tracked it for two weeks and tranquilized it to catch it the first time around. well. guess you might be doing that again.

detweiler calls karin strange like he didn’t track a wild animal for two weeks and bring it home… bro. that cannot have been legal or ethical. worry about YOURSELF first, please.

the police guy says he is using LIVE ROUNDS on this dog beast. not darts. but a thunking noise is heard!! he wants more men to catch and kill it!!

it seemed to be the dog sneaking up on him, based on the angle of the camera… but it’s detweiler!!! he says “kill that dog, and i’ll kill you” oh!

sigh. again. if it really is the last of the species, it NEEDS to be protected. but unfortunately, it is shapeshifting and eating people. hard to keep such a creature in captivity to study.

and karin found paw prints right away, despite detweiler saying there were none. and she sees a fifth toe pad!! very interesting.

scully is watching as mulder’s hand brushes karin’s over the mouse…. oh, girl... she is drawing conclusions...

scully is confused as to why murder would be out of the question in the category of "things a dog cannot do", but "having thumbs" IS within the realm of possibility. karin says that the dhole, in mythology, can open doors, steal wives, disappear- that sort of thing. not quite sure if these are actual "facts" as she claims. but. whatever.

OH!!!! scully goes out to the car, and when mulder follows, she says she questions karin's motives…. SHE SAYS KARIN LOVES HIM?!?!? OH MY GOD…… he’s like, "but she has nothing to do with the four dead bodies!!!" and scully says women can be tricksters, too….. ooooo.

many interesting things happening here.

detweiler is going to a vet, and a random dog will NOT stop barking at him. “can’t you control your dog?” he asks to the poor lady whose pet is in the office. don’t victim blame here, freak. that poor canine named duke knows you have blood on your hands.

he wants animal tranquilizer!! probably to hunt this beast down again as he claims to have done before. he gets some from the vet, with remarkable ease- i would have thought he would need a prescription for a specific animal rather than just buying it- and then leaves…. and the vet says goodnight to the dogs as he leaves.

i feel sorry for them, and i fear for their lives…. noooo, don’t bark and make me sad, dogs in the cages…. they’re trying to tell the vet something…. the dhole!!! it is here!!!!

it runs to get him, but he locks it in with the dogs!!! and calls the cops!!! cohn is here with guys and guns….

he says he is going to have to shoot him…..

but i have a feeling that is the wrong dog.

NOOOOO!!! not duke!!!

i’m torn here, because i’m liking this episode, but 2 dogs have died so far, and that makes me cry.

DUKE :(((((

scully and mulder arrive at the vet's office. OH!!! duke made it successfully out of surgery!!!!!!! THANK YOU, MR. VET!!!!! wait. unless…. there is shapeshifting afoot...

scully goes inside…. it’s very dark….

she sees a signed photo from karin on the wall… but that can’t be too unusual, can it? i mean, if there’s a dog expert in the area and a vet sending fan mail… i could see how such a thing would happen

scully hears screaming!!!! she grabs her gun!!! and loudly declares that a federal agent is here, and you must tell her if you are okay!!!!

oh my god!!! the vet!!! he is all eaten up!!! with duke still on the table!!!

mulder comes in to see this… and just as they leave, duke shapeshifts back into a dhole!!!

okay. so now the question of how many dogs have died is left unanswered. where is REAL duke?!?!

scully goes to see karin. OH! scully straight up says she is investigating her. and then shoos one of her dogs out of a chair. she means BUSINESS!!!

OH!!! she diagnoses her. systemic lupus erythematous. OKAY, DOCTOR SCULLY!!! that’s why karin keeps the place dark and wears the long sleeves. karin ignored the symptoms until she faced the consequences. and she says she has always felt more wolf than human.

scully says she must have found someone in mulder- so she lured him out to california.

bold accusation, scully. she says karin must not have believed there is an animal out there. and karin says she certainly doesn’t believe that is there WAS an animal, dr. detweiler ever caught it.

SCULY SAYS SHE’S WATCHING HER, OH MY GODDD?? does she think she’s going to hurt mulder……? well. with the poster. i guess it seems a bit creepy. how did she even find out that particular piece of information about him?

mulder’s poking around, looking for stuff at the vet, scraping up blood samples. he calls cahn!!! and says detweiler signed for something!! he can’t quite pronounce the meds- which is funny because it is relatable- but cahn is like yeah, he picked up a bunch of tranquilizers. cahn says he is on the way to analyze whatever sort of stuff mulder scraped up.

but no!!! the beast!!! it’s in the car with cahn!!!

cahn gets eaten. damn.

mulder finds him in the hospital, along with detweiler. okay! i guess he did not get fully eaten! but detweiler being here is mad suspicious.

he claims he came there to get a description of the animal from cahn. well. you’re supposed to know what it looks like if you were tracking it for weeks… and he claims he knew about the attack because they had been in contact.

ohhh, mulder says "nuh-uh- he hated you". and then he starts to manhandle detweiler. mulder says you found that animal, but you never caught it!! it caught you!!! and he thinks that at night, detweiler turns into a dhole!! he killed because he could…. so that’s why he took the tranquilizer. to try and stop himself.

a bold claim. seems fairly reasonable in such circumstances, however.

detweiler walks away. and runs into karin in the hall. what is she doing here?! she says she has protected him as long as she could!!! but she won’t any longer!!!

so it must be true!!

mulder returns to karin's office… and he says to her, you haven’t been totally honest. you knew it wasn’t a dog. and she’s like yeah!! so you would come here and disprove the dog theory!!

AND she admits the dhole actually is detweiler. she thought she was protecting the animal, and if she used mulder as bait, maybe it could be captured alive. OH!!! bro makes an online friend and gets used as BAIT!!!

literally stranger danger….

that is actually very sad. he wanted someone to chat with and a scoop on a case, and karin might have gotten him eaten.

karin says scully will lose detweiler right away, and that he will go back to cahn to finish the kill.

mulder gets up and uses her phone to call scully, LMAOOOOO. directly in front of her. i suppose that makes it clear where he stands between the two of them if it was going to be a competition. karin gazes off at the poster in the distance.

scully is MAD that he made her sit in the hospital waiting room all night- and can you BLAME HER?! he tries to explain the detweiler to dhole transformation process… but what if karin is tricking him again?!!

scully is practically yelling, SHE’S TRICKING YOU!!! but he insists that detweiler will come, and gestures for her to have a seat. he tries to steal her magazine, and she steals it back and turns away from him, despite sitting on the same couch. oh, she was mad as HELL!

aww. i feel bad for scully!!! she’s the territorial one here!!

karin is putting her dogs in their cages…. but she sees something in the distance.

meanwhile, mulder is flipping through the magazine on the hospital couch, while scully sleeps next to him (oh my GOD?!). he gently taps her awake, saying detweiler isn’t coming. “well, you’ve got no argument from me”, she says

i respect that she just woke up and the first words out of her mouth are to sass him. i would have been like "what? huh? where are we?" but no. scully gets things done.

he says that karin lied to him….. omg... and he trusted her AGAIN by waiting there all night...

back at the kennel, karin takes out her gun and loads it up. everything is so quiet. and the dhole approaches. but mulder calls her phone!

she answers, but sets the phone down, so she either cannot hear him saying to lock the doors, or simply does not care. and in walks the dhole. she cocks the gun.

it snarls at her…. but she sets the gun down… telling him to come on. and she lets herself get eaten?!?? she is thrown out the window!!!!

the agents arrive!!!! the dhole followed her out the window, and impaled itself on the new fence… and it’s detweiler!!! along with a dead karin. scully is teary-eyed.

woah. so she sacrificed herself to stop detweiler because she was the one who was hiding his secret in the first place...

we take a skip in time and journey back home. mulder is now sitting at their basement desk, head in hands. scully asks if he’ll go home, and he says soon.

OH! scully immediately clocks that he blames himself for what went down. “i think that i… believed her very quickly. i think maybe that was my fault, yeah”. he’s rubbing his eyes, like he can barely stay awake.

scully sets her stuff down, and sits on the edge of the desk. “why wouldn’t you believe her?”

he replies that he barely knew her. and scully says that karin figured him out and played him exactly as she wanted to.

but scully thinks that she found a kindred spirit in him. after all, she analyzed him exactly right. “maybe what she did was the highest form of compliment”

she asks if he is going to be okay, and as he plays with his screwdriver, he says he will. and scully hands him a poster that came in the mail from the kennel.

awwww…. it’s a copy of his old poster, sent from the kennel. he pins it up to the wall and stares at it, while a musical flourish plays.

this concludes the episode.

and boy, did this episode have EVERYTHING: scully being right, territorial scully, dogs, extinct animals, mulder blaming himself, shapeshifting, unrequited attraction, and a bunch of other things.

scully being so protective really reminded me of that post i made about both of them thinking they’re in a sheep/guard dog dynamic, and both of them thinking they’re the dog. and in this case, mulder was so obviously the sheep. he was lured right in. was it the friendship with karin that tempted him, or the case itself that made him so susceptible? perhaps that is just who he is as a person. he says to trust no one, but so often he finds himself doing the trusting. it’s a interesting case of doing what he says and not what he does.

and then scully coming in at the end, asking him if he blames himself; he says that he does. and she tries to have an open dialogue, but also keep him from wallowing in the guilt. asking why wouldn’t he trust her? when he says "because i barely knew her", she points out that karin knew him and manipulated him- but meant it as a form of flattery. and she means what she says, too. she’s not just trying to make him feel better by saying something she doesn't believe. she really does think that karin admired him, even though she was ready to throw hands with her for the way she used mulder.

how interesting it was that scully picked up on her manipulation, though. and she did so right away. while mulder was like, come on! she wouldn’t do that! scully point blank tells karin that she’s watching her. that protectiveness and jealous streak made my heart do kick flips.

as did scully getting lured into the case with the pictures and vague description at the very beginning, haha. it’s interesting. mulder lured scully into getting involved with some photos, but he couldn’t pick up on the fact that he was being manipulated when karin did the same to him. scully points out that karin analyzed him to a t. it’s interesting that he was able to say exactly the right things to get scully invested, implying that he also knows exactly what to say to get her attention, but can’t recognize this being done to him by someone else.

of course though, when it comes to scully, he knows there would never be an ulterior motive. it's just that he seems incapable of recognizing when a friend isn't actually a friend.

i’m still a little confused as to where he stands with all of this. like i’ve said before, it’s been jarring to go from his FTF self, where he declares he owes her everything, and she owes him nothing, to his often cruel comments in s6. and THEN the cruel comments and favoring of diana over her are cut in with his unyielding adoration. which seems entirely contradictory. but that’s just how it is. he tells her diana would trust him more in episode 1, then confesses his love in episode 3. they bring each other christmas presents and then there’s that “you’re making this personal” line that made me see red. they tease each other and play fake married for the bit and the job, but she also can’t stand his touch. and in this episode, she gets up and leaves because she’s so mad at him for believing karin's obvious manipulation and watching him get flirted with, and then when he comes to sit with her in the hospital after insisting the dhole will come, she both doesn't believe him and turns her body away from him. i can’t figure it out. what makes a person go from loving to thoughtless and back and forth on a pendulum? someone left a comment saying that mulder seems clinically depressed- i would have to agree. but i'm still awaiting a larger plot explanation, because there is SOMETHING going on here. and i don't want to assume it's sloppy writing when it seems so intentional.

i mean, scully’s reactions make perfect sense to me. this person who she has shared so much of her life with is alternating between being more honest than ever before and more cruel than ever before. meanwhile, she’s realizing she has her own feelings for him, trying to grapple with the fact that she wants A Life outside of work, possibly one WITH him, and nothing he is doing makes sense. so she doesn’t necessarily want to be with him 24/7 and keep dealing with his existential angst funneled in her direction, but she also doesn’t want to leave him to suffer through whatever it is he’s going through by himself. she watched him get manipulated by diana, and bore the brunt of that misdirected anger when she pointed it out, and then AGAIN she is watching him get manipulated by karin, and still he does not listen to her. what a horrible position to be in. and a testament to how deeply loving she is that she chooses to come back at the end and ask if he is okay. over and over again. when she could tell him to go kick rocks. intimacy through codependency, indeed; but also the result of having that deep soul bond between them and her faith in him as a person. and her seeing that there is something off with him and stepping up to play hero.

also, how interesting that mulder vehemently denies that karin is attracted to him. i think he genuinely means it, too. he doesn't seem to understand how that would even work. they just met, and they've only spoken over email and phone, so in his mind, how could this woman be attracted to him? i think he was telling the truth when he said to scully that he doesn't think it would even possible. he seemed excited to meet her because he had read her books and they had exchanged friendly emails- lord knows the man needs friends- but in no way did he seem actually attracted to her the way we have seen him attracted to other people, like bambi or scully. their hands did brush over the mouse, but a little physical contact over the implications of rediscovering an extinct animal isn't hugely out of character for the dude who started reciting various cryptids to the cop the minute the subject arose. and based on the way karin was so abrupt with him, asking if there was anything else that he came there to talk about the minute he got there, it seemed at first like she didn't even enjoy his company. but scully deduced right away that she did. i mean, the poster was a pretty dead giveaway, imo, but mulder doesn't seem to have an inherent grasp on other people's emotions.

he said that they talked over phone and email, so i don't think he sent her the poster. but maybe he did. and maybe that would indicate a more than friendly relationship- although, again, i felt no real romantic tension from his end, just a bit of nerding out over meeting a wolf expert whose books he claimed to have read (but was he lying about that, too?!). but also, he seemed surprised to see it on her wall. i kinda assumed he just mentioned it in their correspondence at some point, somehow, and she tracked her own version down. but maybe that wasn't the conclusion i was supposed to come to. maybe i was supposed to think they were penpals.

i thought karin was cool at first, actually. i figured that scully's suspicion was supposed to be a red herring to throw you off of the real bad guy, but it turns out it was entirely warranted. she became decidedly less cool when she knew who was doing the killings and didn't do anything about it except bring in some random, lonely, vulnerable guy from the east coast to use as your human bait. this is decidedly less cool than her just being an awkward expert on canines.

but then, if the poster was sent to him at the end... did she put it in the mail before she made her final sacrifice? does she want him to remember her?

okay. change in gears here: how did detweiler survive in that big box when he was in dhole mode? mulder's statement at the end implied that he only went wolfy at night. but maybe he had shape-shifting abilities the whole time, so he could just stay in dhole mode and eat the meat and water i assume got left in the box for him. because if not, and he was just sitting in there in human form, no air holes or human food in sight... hmm. well. i mean, even for an episode about shapeshifting dogs, i find that a tad unrealistic.

i guess it's unfortunate that he turned into a shapeshifting beast. more sympathetic, at least, than a guy who wanted to buy and ship himself the last of a species. that's just wild levels of hubris.

it's not entirely clear to me if he had found a dhole in the wild and then maybe he got bit or something and like a vampire he, too, became a shapeshifting dhole. but you know what? big scary dog is really just a plot device for me to analyze mulder and scully. and how much there is to analyze.

as frustrated as i am with mulder and his rudeness to scully, and trusting literally anyone other than her, i also feel sad for him- which is the first time this has happened this season, so i'd say that is remarkable, and hat's off to the writers, even if episode 16 is a bit late to get my sympathy going. he seems to genuinely want to think that diana and karin have his best interests at heart. and they don't. they're manipulating him. and he was already at a very low point being taken off of the x files; he was susceptible to such trickery. but still, i cannot understand why he thinks that after all of this time, scully would be the one in the wrong here. or why he seems to take her for granted. again, i come back to my theory that perhaps something terrible is happening to him in secret, and he wants to push her away in order to prevent her from feeling sorrow if he disappears- but that same stress that is making him snappy and rude is also making him realize that he has to tell her what he feels now.

confusing? yeah. but oftentimes emotions are like this. or maybe something is going on with his "sister" or his mother and he's not talking about it. i would propose the theory that he's grappling with his father's legacy, but that only started getting explored in the two fathers/one son arc, and that was already halfway through the season, whereas his snappiness has been going on since episode 1. i suppose it's possible, but perhaps not the most logical conclusion.

but! you still have to promise you can't tell me what is actually going on! i cherish discovery!!

well! i enjoyed this one very much. please let me know what you thought. do you think karin and mulder were engaged in mutual flirting? do you think scully was too territorial and protective? did you figure out the logic of detweiler and the dhole somehow? how did you react to the conversation in the car? and the scene on the hospital couch? please let me know!

My question was though, how much can you analyze about the English lyrics of No. 7 (anime intro)? The lyrics supposedly explain some of the story and you're the best theorist I know who can put this in an organized post XD

(Sorry if you've been asked this before haha feel free to ignore if so and have a great day!)

I looked at the Japanese and English versions, and well, to better organize the meaning of the song, I'm going to write it here in a more objective way, it will be easy to understand the meaning as you read the lyrics.

This is because the Japanese version has a lot of wordplay and puns, the English version translated it literally and in the same way as the Japanese, which made some passages confusing.

Let's get started (this is the full version of the song)

So now let me tell you the story of number 7

ANALYSIS

Let's use numbers to better analyze the excerpts

1 = could mean that Hanako is happy now to be having fun with Nene and Kou, but at the same time sad about having to deal with the past and the future (Nene's future death)

2 = This excerpt is very emblematic, but "within the rumors two shadows appear" could refer to the twins "the passion turned into nothing, it's just a story" they would be in love with each other and what remained of that story would be murder. There is also the possibility that he is referring to Nene, since Hanako-san now has an assistant. Two shadows, and the passion that turned into nothing, an impossible love.

3 = A metaphor about the contrast between reality and a distant desire

4 and 5 = Hanako's story is being told little by little and someone (it could be Nene) is not realizing the details between the lines.

6 to 10 = Complaints about how reality is terrible and he wants to experience something unreal, not just him, but the other mysteries, everyone feels incomplete and is looking for something that reality cannot offer, something that they cannot achieve but they really want it. And specifically about the mirror, he says it is unchanging, confirming that no matter what he does, nothing will change.

11 to 15 = reference to Tsukasa's death, the murder. About how Hanako lied while creating a fake smile. He hurt Tsukasa, and he went to the place where nothing exists "Surely he is there" and the verses mention the sin and punishment that Hanako has to take responsibility for.

16 to 18 = Probably Hanako talking about his past with Nene. He says he will "reach him" that is, he will tell her the whole truth.

19 to 29 = references the other mysteries and how they are all fighting to create a better version of themselves, even though they are imperfect. In addition to, of course, mentioning a little about their feelings.

30 to 35 = reference to Tsukasa, he wants Hanako to show what he really feels, at the same time that Tsukasa "blurs" the way he feels "I blurred the details while pretending to be fine" "Alone, placed in that place" "he is still there continuously" reference that Tsukasa was left on Hanako's boundary and hides that he feels sad about it.

36 and 37 = it's a little difficult to know if the speaker is Hanako or Tsukasa, the excerpts fit for both, but it's probably more linked to Hanako, since he's the one hiding the past.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Place where nothing exists = boundary, Hanako says that when he enters a boundary, the person ceases to exist in the human world while there.

Swinging the blade = stabbing, direct reference to murder.

In that place where no one exists, he is certainly there = clear reference that Hanako believed that Tsukasa was on the boundary

In that place where no one exists, today he also exists = reference to Tsukasa's return.

Hey tell me about the continued story = about the story we are following now

CONCLUSION

Basically it's Hanako talking about himself, about the mysteries and about Tsukasa. We also see many parts where he talks about how he feels, but in short, that's it.

The lyrics of this song change subtly according to the translation you are looking for, but the general meaning is this.

That's the way I interpreted the opening lyrics, other people may have different ways of seeing how they work, but for me that's it.

Also, rereading back JuAli's scenes together in the Kou Empire, it's really so funny how empty Judar's threats and insults towards Alibaba are.

Sure, he tried to kill him before.

He'll get all hissy like a fussy moody cat towards him. But it's not out of genuine hatred.

JuAli are true opposites in terms of their personalities, morals/ideals/world views...

In JuAli's chapters together, I think it's sexy how Judar expressed his frustrations with Alibaba's character, basically, what he perceived as Alibaba's naivety.

Like, Judar is clearly frustrated by Alibaba's whole deal, being unable to understand Alibaba or really get what's going on with him (despite Alibaba being really straightforward as a person)

Especially when he has such a childish personality and black and white morals and worldview of boxing people into Strong vs. Weak.

It's like... At that moment, he (Judar) is not ready to face that.

Alibaba is someone that he clearly sees and perceives as "weak and naive" but also challenges his world views, cuz he just... does not get Alibaba's humble nature, at all.

In the sense of being frustrated by someone's bright (dazzling) radiance.

He understands and recognizes that Alibaba draws others to him, but just can't seem to understand why. It frustrates him how he doesn't get it. And that in itself shows a form of inner curiosity, a desire to know more.

I wanted to convey that feeling in my own dialogue scripts.

Judar's insults… They don't hold true weight.

Like the insults he throws are so empty.

It's so funny like he (Judar) says it with his whole chest.

Recently revamped a JuAli dialogue script idea I had. Judar and Alibaba kiss with banter ❤️ 💛 I added more to it. I last updated it in December, so I might as well post it again since I added some new lines.

It's just them kissing but just gonna put a warning cuz it's kinda suggestive/sexually implicit though.

Yeah I think my moots know why I mainly post rambles on Insta and Tumblr, it's cuz I usually do long rambles for character thoughts + analysis, and Twitter's character limit is super annoying for that. I tend to post discussions cuz my friends have insightful things to say (and I feel like it flows more naturally in convo format than just to summarize what they said)

I need to talk more about my Magi faves on here (I miss them) because I had many thoughts while reading, so I just roughly drafted ideas right now. I need to write my character/ship ideas down before I forget.

Me: I actually originally wrote Judar's last line as "Show me the kind of spark that charmed Hakuryuu so much." Because Judar makes a note in Ch. 266 that Hakuryuu is charmed by Alibaba in the fan-TL :) And also the official EN TL by Viz. They still keep it (whews) but remove the 1st mention of it, "What about Alibaba charmed Hakuryuu…"

But I don't tend to reference other ships in my ship stuff since I usually focus on ships solo. Like in my AU stuff, I tend to focus on just the ship/characters itself. Like I would rather deal with my multiships in their own separate AUs, since it’s easier for me to work with. I do love AliHaku though. But I liked that line so I still tried to include it though. NGNGNNG.

JuAli's "Love-Hate" relationship is soooo interesting to me <33 They're so sen-core.

Obviously they're more complicated than that but "Love-Hate" is just to simplify it

They're Enemies to Lovers too, but very different from LimGuda (Douman/Ritsuka) obviously. But they share most of the Sen-core ship tropes I love. I think JuAli has HoroRen (SK) kinda~ish vibes.

Like y'know. Yin/Yang. Light/Darkness. Protagonist/Antagonist. Angel/Devil. Enemies to Lovers. And then JuAli also has Fire/Ice going on with them. Sen-core meow meow mf/ship strikes again. I really adore JuAli and AliHaku, heehee. It's very typical Sen-ship trope core with their Sun/Moon/Eclipse symbolism going on.

My most favourite ships are usually Opposites Attract (the good kind). There are bad Opposites Attract ships out there obviously (charas who just bicker and literally nothing else). I'm just built different though. JuAli and HoroRen just fall into my kind of rather rough and violent end of Opposites Attract ships. Twink on twink violence is their love language /lh

I love Opposites Attract ships that are also combined with any of these tropes: Narrative parallelism (Yin/Yang, Light/Darkness, Sun/Moon tropes), Protagonist x Rival/Antagonist/Opposing Figure, Apoptosis, Reconciliation of Opposites, Fated Enemies/Rivals, etc.

Me: For JuAli, I feel like at first, Judar hates Alibaba with so much love. Like when you hate someone so much it’s love. And Judar would just constantly be like "I really don't get this guy at all" and "I don't understand what he's thinking at all!"

I feel like in the early stages of them catching feelies they’d both be really awkward around each other and constantly headbutt each other… They'd always be pretty competitive with each other, like “Casual sex implies the existence of ranked competitive sex” vibes (LMAO) but they'd warm up to each other over time.

I'm busy so Idk when I'll sketch this all out but it was based off this idea I had in my head.

Re: My Writing Ideas

Me: I don't really post my writing ideas on main cuz my dialogue scripts are more like guidelines for me to practice writing dialogue for comics, and also to help me remember my art ideas. I write down my ideas so that I don't forget them (cuz they come to me spontaneously during the day), and also so that I can hopefully turn them into comics one day 🙏

My mutuals/friends can read them though! I post them because I'm not sure when I'll get the chance to turn my ideas into art form, and because I think the dialogue scripts are interesting to read.

Also me doing this still technically counts as a form of art. Even if they're written almost like play format, it's still a form of creative writing

I've definitely gotten sm better at it like I've been refining the way I write Idate's dialogue (and other WATGBS AU charas) over time

Because when I write these scenario ideas down, I think in terms of visuals. When the ideas come to my head, I imagine and see them all visually in my head. I'm a much more visual person, so I see things through visuals, and then try to turn them into words.

I think I first started critically engaging with and analyzing media at 18 (which is a good thing, because art is a form of expression and social commentary). I think I only really got good at doing media analysis at 18+ and it refined even more at 19 - 21+

It used to be so hard for me to put my thoughts into words, but I got much better at it through practice (by doing all the thought rambles)

But I'm literally so much better at analytical writing (ie. Series and character analysis, meta) than creative writing (ie. Novel and fanfic writing), so that's why I only do dialogue scripts. It'd be interesting to try and take up fanfic writing in the future though... But it definitely won't be soon, so I'll stick to my main creative form (drawing) for now
