Not Your Little Kraytling - SW Fic
https://archiveofourown.org/works/29161515/chapters/119044291
Summary: Luke, seventeen years old, is itching to be taken seriously as an adult. Vader just wants him to stay young a little longer. Krayt-shifter au.
No excerpt this time b/c it’s so so short, just a lil drabble, but as a hint it does involve juvenile instincts :)

The reason Mando does so many “side quests” is because he’s poor. He has to work for everything. He lives a self-sufficient life on the road bringing money back to his tribe to support them because Mandalorians aren’t safe and can only show their faces in town one at a time or they’re perceived as a danger because of how they look and what reputation is attributed to that appearance by many people. Almost every single episode has somebody picking a fight with Mando over the armor when he’s literally just standing there. He has to fight, scrap, save, barter, trade, and work for every single thing he has because the alternative is dying, or people he cares about dying. It doesn’t matter if it’s because they’re attacked or because they literally don’t have the money to eat, most of the Mandalorians we’ve seen live hand to mouth day by day, surviving out of sheer willpower and working together
Season 1 Episode 2: His only means of transportation (/place of living) is scavenged for parts and stolen in pieces. He’s forced to negotiate with the ones who took his stuff and do a job for them so he can get it all back before then having to rebuild the ship (when he shouldn’t have to trade anything for it to begin with)
Season 1 Episode 4: He wants somewhere safe and unassuming he can lay low with the kid and agrees to scare off some local bandits so he can have lodging. His original long term plan was to stay on Sorgan for a few months— He’s willing to fight the bandits and the Walker because that village was where he was given somewhere to eat and sleep and because he had intended to live there long term
Season 1 Episode 5: The hunter that found them on Sorgan forces him to acknowledge he’s not allowed to remain sedentary. He tries to go back to his old job, working as a bounty hunter for money; he and the kid can live on the ship, though it isn’t ideal, but he needs food, fuel, and immediate ship repairs. The betrayal of the gunslinger and confirmation from a target that word of him breaking the Guild Code has reached the literal farthest reaches of the Outer Rim solidifies that he can’t be a legitimate hunter anymore and that people who recognize him or the kid (or recognize them because they’re together) will be gunning for the reward, leading to—
Season 1 Episode 6: Mando going back to the only other life and means of making money he’s known, working shady jobs with criminals in the hope of receiving payment. The job proves even more unpredictable and dangerous than the last one and puts him back at square one again.
Season 2 Episode 1: Mando is a well-rounded character who’s been given an objective outside of just surviving to the next day. He only ends up in Mos Pelgo because he needs information, and he only agrees to fight the Krayt dragon because— as a well-rounded character— he’s promised culturally important relics of his people that he holds in the highest respect. The armor of a dead Mandalorian being given the proper respect (showing the honor he has for his people) is shown to be tied in importance with the kid. At least he’s given some food for the road because it’s clear he wasn’t being paid any money in addition to it.
Season 2 Episode 2: Chasing the barest lead on information about other Mandalorians forces him to take the dangerous passage he does; he only ends up having to survive the ice planet because of the threat of incarceration if he didn’t run. He’s not being paid in money here either AND his ship is literally barely holding together. If it was a horse he’d have to shoot it.
Season 2 Episode 3: Bo-Katan is his last lead on information about a Jedi. The child needs a Jedi teacher so he’ll be safe. By this point Mando is desperate and BKK forces him to do a dangerous job in exchange for information. He’s not getting any money this season because all of the jobs he does are in exchange for information and it’s a lot easier to manipulate and force people who need a favor from you to do whatever you tell them because you have something more specific than money they can’t get anywhere else. He doesn’t have enough money to cover a good fix of the Crest but doesn’t have anything to leverage against the mechanic who did a partial job for all the money he did have left, meaning—
Season 2 Episode 4: He has to call in a favor from a friend. Karga’s willing to cover his fuel, repairs, and docking fees, but oh Mando while you’re here I have this pesky Imperial infestation and since it’ll take a while for your ship to be repaired and you’re not busy…
Season 2 Episode 5: Now he’s finally found a Jedi. Now he may finally be able to give the kid to somebody who can protect him and teach him how to protect himself. Now the kid may finally be able to live a long, safe life, even if it means it can’t be with him. Oh right except this Jedi says she isn’t really a Jedi anymore, and also she’s kind of busy, but maybe she’ll think about it if you help her do her own thing in liberating a town—
Only for Ahsoka to then go back on her deal because she has her own thing going on. Considering how important the whole Thrawn mission is shown to be later, I’m not all that convinced she was ever going to take the kid as an apprentice. She may have been on the fence and maybe considered doing it if Elsbeth didn’t give any information up, but if the whole Ahsoka show was about her search for Thrawn, it’s obvious she has a lot more involvement in that than she’d be able to afford if she took the kid as her ward. The idea that the kid’s too attached to Mando for her to take him as a student seems like a pretty convenient excuse considering she knows this guy has zero clue about anything to do with the Jedi. It doesn’t matter if she’s right or not, she could have been upfront about having more pressing matters she was devoted to.
And then the rest of season 2 is the bigger plot. Episodes 1, 3, 7, and 8 of Season 1 were plot.
Mando has to live life on the road in a dangerous and unpredictable galaxy doing dangerous and unpredictable jobs. He’s poor. He’s a survivalist. He’s desperate. He makes friends because interpersonal ties are often the only other form of currency he has, and those ties still often come with requests for favors or work in exchange for what they can do for him. Hardly anybody is giving him anything, and even when they do, he still feels obligated to pay them back.

'I'm in love with a Jedi' Support Group - One Shot
Happy May 4th! In honor of this day, have the full one-shot of this post that still makes the rounds here and people seem to find fun! All mistakes are mine, I just finished and it is 1:50 am for me! But I will clean it up and post it to Ao3 later today. Enjoy!
Now on AO3!
Read on if you like Anidala, Codywan, Dinluke, Hanleia, Quinfox, Kesett, Blyala, Kanera, alongside Grogu being cute and getting too many cookies!
Description: Din gets jumped on the way back home and wakes to find he has been welcomed into a 'secret club' made for those who fell for Jedi and now have to deal with Force Osik.
A Star Wars May 4th One-Shot
Din was no idiot. He had clocked the people following him since he had been halfway through his market run. But they were good at hiding themselves. He knew at least four people were keeping a close eye on him. But every time he had tried to look more closely, they had hidden themselves among the crowd. It was a Sunday at 10 am, which meant that the market was especially packed. Part of the reason he had decided to leave Grogu and Luke at home, big crowds left them more tired. It was fun, they definitely enjoyed their time out and about, but by the end of it, both would be tired the rest of the day. Considering they would have visitors later tonight, he and Luke had agreed that it was better that he took care of the shopping so they would all have the energy to host later tonight.
And now he was even more glad he had left them at home. He did not need Luke and Grogu exposed to someone looking for a fight. Din was 70% sure these people were looking for the Darksaber. Most of the time, challengers came alone, but more than once some random Mandalorian would come with their clan to try to intimidate him as he was challenged. It could also have been just someone who wanted Din's armor, but that they were good at evading him made him consider this was no mere group of criminals looking to jump him.
Still, Din kept on and finished his purchases. No need for them to know he knew they were there. He hoped as soon as he got done with the Challenge for the tittle of Mand'alor (which he still did not want, at all), he would be free to grab his stuff and get home in time to give Grogu his cookies before naptime. The kid would not be happy if he didn't give him the cookies before. Otherwise, after naptime it would be too close to lunch time for a snack. Grogu loved those blue cookies. He would rather avoid having his child give him a cold shoulder, Din would prefer going against another Krayt Dragon.
Saying goodbye to a regular vendor that delighted in spoiling Grogu with his favorite cookies, Din made his way seemingly towards home. He tried to shake his tail, he would fight if necessary, but he would rather just go home and deal with this idiots on another day. But, they were good and he couldn't shake them. Din had to admit that getting to let off some steam from his nerves about tonight's dinner would not be a bad thing. He took a couple of more turns, and quickly dived into a hidden alley. As he settled in the shadow of the entrance, expecting to jump whoever came lookign for him, he did not expect the blow to the back of his head.
It was never good to be knocked out, but at least they had placed him in a comfortable chair. He made sure not to move or change his deep breathing. His helmet was still on, and he could feel the Darksaber still on his hip. He could not see yet all that clearly, but the tranquilizer was fast working and already leaving his system. He could still not hear, but his vision was now good enough that he could see he was in front of a window. What was he doing in the only building in their town that was so high up to see over the whole market? As he pondered this, trying to remember what the building was (a Hotel he was sure), his hearing finally returned enough to hear the heavy steps coming towards him from the left. He tensed as he heard a familiar voice, which immediately overrode his instinct to pretend to still be knocked out beacause he knew that voice.
"You can stop pretending, I know you are awake." Commander Fox had now sat down next to him on a couch, in what as he gazed around, he could clearly tell was indeed a Hotel room. Fox was holding a beer on one hand and another he offered to Din, who on auto took it. As Fox opened his, the door opened and more surprised entered.
Leading the group, was Luke's mother, Padme Skywalker, holding some bags clearly also from the market. Han Solo came next, also carrying more bags. Both headed straight for the little kitchen to the left of the front door. After Han, Hera Syndulla and Commander Bly enter next, deep in conversation. They sit at the bar that separetes the kitchen from the sitting area as Padme directs Han to put away the food they had brought. The last to enter are Commander Cody and Boba Fett, both sporting matching scowls directed towards Din.
Din might still be under the influence of the drug, he can only stare open-mouthed while holding a beer on one hand as everyone else (who were suppossed to arrive for dinner in the evening) moves around like Din hadn't been knocked out and brought here.
As he opens his mouth, willing to ask what was going, Cody and Boba approach them and now he can see their piercing gazes are not for Din, but rather, for Fox.
"Fox, drugging him was not the plan!" Despite having only known the man for a few years, and already as an adult, Din still felt like a misbehaving ad whenever Cody used his "Commander Voice" (as Luke called it) around him.
"This is a secret meeting, we have done the same for every single one of the members. Besides, needed to test how well he could avoid us."
"He is a trained Mandalorian and the current Mand'alor! You already know how good he is!"
"What if it had been an imposter posing as him? Couldn't risk it."
"Fox, are you listening to yourself!"
As Cody continued to fight with his brother, Boba grabbed Din and gotten him to his feet, taking the beer off his hand and directing him to the bar. Hera had now moved to help in the kitchen with Han as Padme directed them in chopping various things. Bly had moved as Boba and Din approached to also join in the scolding of Fox, all three now almost screaming at each other.
"Did I hear that right? Din, are you okay honey? C'mon, grab a seat, and have some water." Padme motioned to the stools and Boba directed a still dumbstruck Din to seat. He also gave him a water bottle and padded his arm. Din finally managed to stop pretending to be a fish and removed his helmet. He tried to get his hair in some order before drinking the whole bottle. He turned to Boba finally asked what was going on.
"Welcome to the club, cousin. The plan wasn't to knock you out, that was all Fox. He insists on doing that to 'preserve our secrets' or some osik like that."
"Club?"
"It's more of a support group."
"Support for what?"
"The Force."
"What?"
"Boba, you are confusing him more!" That was Cody, who had left Bly to deal with Fox.
"Then you come and explain it then!"
"Boys, boys, keep it calm please! Here Din, I think you will need this." Hera had opened up some wine and had given him the first glass. As she continued to pass them about, Han and Padme, who were still chopping and now putting stuff to cook at the stove, took pity on the confused face Din was sporting to explain more.
"Back in the Clone Wars, I stumbled upon Cody, Fox and Bly lamenting on the fact that they were in secret relationships with Force Users and it was too much sometimes when none understood anything about the Force. Considering that my own marriage back then had been a secret, I offered to host some get togethers to just unwind and tell each other our woes when it came to the things we encountered with our significant others." Padme finally deemed everything ready let it cook on its own and grabbed the final wine glass Hera passed to her. Cody, Boba, Bly and Fox had come around now to listen to her explanation.
"And as more of us got together with our partners, we were 'kidnapped' and brought into the club, so don't take it personally." Han was hard at work as he added some herbs to the boiling pot at the stove, under Padme's watchful eye. Din was surprised to see how confident Han was in the kitchen and with his mother-in-law. Din had seen him be on edge when in the same room as Anakin Skywalker, so this was a true change of character. But Din understood, Padme had that way of being that made you be calm in her presence. Din knew that Luke share that trait with her, always so quick to make both Grogu and Din be at ease in his presence. Oh no.
"Luke and Grogu!" How could he be so stupid as to forget? As he stood up, Cody got next to him and forced him to settle him down back in the chair.
"Easy there, don't worry. Luke knows that you are safe, and we made sure that those groceries you were carrying got home to them. It's been taken care of." Din could breath easier at that, finally taking a small sip of the wine as he let the adrenaline go. Hera offered to refill it and he accepted, as Fox crossed his arms and shot his brother a scowl from the other end of the bar.
"You better not have given our position or meeting away, Cody!"
"Not very secretive to be in the only Hotel in town, Fox."
"Fox still thinks we should keep these meetings as secret as possible, as if by now, over 20 years after the fact, the whole Galaxy was not aware of our relationships." Bly offered, sitting next to Din and blocking a fuming Fox.
"Those security measures kept us safe, Bly! What do you think would have happened had Palpatine figured it out?"
"Death most certainly but he has been dead for decades Fox! If we want to hang out, we can do so like normal people!" Bly had turned now to address Fox and they continued squabbling.
"Now, its more about keeping it secret from our partners, or rather, Fox's." Hera offered, as she helped Padme with some sandwhiches and passed those around too.
"IF VOS FINDS OUT HE WILL CRASH OUR MEETINGS!" This seemed to be a common phrase from Fox, as Din saw Bly, who had turned his back to Fox to face Din, mimic his sentence in an exaggerated manner for everyone's amusement. Fox still noticed though and tackled Bly to the ground, but no one batted an eye to this or stopped them either.
Din remembered then that everyone here was supposed to be at his and Luke's home later in teh evening and couldn't fathom how they were keeping it all a secret. He was sure that Luke would have asked after his whereabouts, regardless of Cody being the one to explain Din was safe.
"What exactly does Luke think I am doing?"
"Told him I needed your Bounty Hunter expertise for something. Obi Wan knew I had some last minute business and that I would arrive earlier to get your input, he should still be on his way with Anakin and Leia, we still have that congratulary dinner to get to at your place tonight after all."
"And everyone else?" He turned to Han and Hera. Han answered first, finally getting away from the stove. He took the sandwich Padme offered and leaned against the fridge.
"I was already with Padme on some business, so I offered to bring her with me. As far as Leia knows, we are still on our way." He dove into the food as Hera explained next.
"Kanan thinks I'm wrapping up some business too, he was dropping off Jacen and we will meet at your place."
"I'm on my way from Tatooine and Cal should still be on route from Coruscant." Boba had already finsihed his own sandwich as Din was barely on his first bite. His cousin was grabbing onto Bly's plate when Padme wacked him with a spatula. She motioned for him to make his second sandwich himself as she turned to the two still on the floor.
"Fox, Bly! Stop playing and come get your sandwich or I'm giving them to Boba!"
That got them both off the floor quick. Padme smiled and nodded as she saw them take their plates, finally diving into their own. Din was still confused on one thing though, which he couldn't help but voice.
"Why bring me in now? Because we invited you today?"
"Oh no, we were just waiting for you and Luke to finally admit it to each other." Hera explained.
"We … didn't want to push you into something you might not actually want." Bly offered sheepishly.
"Even if it was very painfully obvious. OW!" Han had smacked in the stomach by Padme, who just smiled serenely towards Din as if nothing had happened.
"Even if you hadn't actually gotten with Luke we had a backup plan, you still have a child who is force sensitive, I know what that feels like, and so does Hera." Both mothers looked at each other and then to Din, who felt better about all of this.
"It always better when you know you have people in your corner who understand the realities of having Force users around." Cody's tone was full of wisdom, gaze momentarily lost in the past and in his own insecurities when he first started seeing Obi Wan.
"Yeah, the realities that they will pull the craziest osik and blame it all on the Force." Boba chirped in, and Cody had to agree. Both had more than once compared notes and guessed that like with orange tookas, red-headed Jedi were some of the most unexpected types of Jedi in terms of what they would try to pull and then blame it all on 'the will of the Force'.
"Seriously, Din, we aren't just saying it, if you ever need anything, you can come to any of us." Bly had finished his sandwich and proceeded to the kitchen to wash the dishes, patting Din's shoulder as he went.
"Or if you just need to vent, we got a group chat that is only for documenting the wild Force osik of every day life." Han had started it, and he was very proud of the secret shots of the craziest things he had caught Leia doing.
He didn't know what to say, but he felt he would make a fool of himself if he tried to speak pass the lump in his throat and preferred to keep quiet. He had been apprehensive in hosting the big dinner tonight, he knew everyone here, most were his family, and many others', family to Luke. As Hera and Fox got close to add him to the various chats, he considered that this was definitely a good surprise.
As Padme asked after Grogu, Din was encouraged to share as many crazy stories as he wanted, and he felt good once he got going and found all the others sharing in similar stories. Padme and Hera, as the other parents to Force Sensitive Children, gave him tips on how to Force proof the upper cabinets to stop Grogu from getting cookies whenever he wanted. So far, Din and Luke had hidden them, but Grogu was good at catching Luke in the act of getting the snacks and then going back for more. He also learned that Obi Wan was, like Luke, very likely to set things floating if left too long to his mediation. Cody had to force his husband to communicate when he would do longer meditation sessions on harder days, so that Cody could be prepared to time him and have food and water ready for the drop after. He also caught snippets of Fox talking to Boba on their own Jedi's particular brand of abilities, Boba sharing some recent incident that had left Cal very distraught on some memories on old Jedi texts he found on a mission. Fox had his own stories and offered to share some of the tea that helped calm down Quinlan when he had tough visions.
Upon hearing the word tea, Han had to intervene saying that he felt that the last tea Cody had recommended to calm Leia's excessive energy had done the opposite of calming her down. At that, Padme and Bly interjected on how to best burn that energy when meditation didn't really work on their own Jedi. From what Din understood, not all Jedi could calm down by simply mediating, like Luke, Obi Wan and Kanan preferred traditional meditation. Some, like Cal and Quinlan, would need to tire themselves out first before meditating; while Anakin, Leia and Aayla would be the kind who any sort of calm meditation would leave them more cranky than relaxed. Din could understand that, Grogu was more manageable if he was allowed to play first, otherwise he would not accept quiet, sitting meditation. Jacen, Hera mentioned, was much the same, and from what Padme shared, it was common for young Force users to be the same way. As children, neither Leia or Luke had wanted to stay still in meditation, Anakin and Obi Wan had to tire them out first so they could properly have a calm mind. On the other hand, Cody mentioned, Obi Wan had a very hard time with a young Anakin, who had never taken to meditating as a young boy. Obi Wan had instead opted for moving meditation, which left Anakin more calm and collected than forcing him to sit down in the traditional way. Hera felt that maybe she would bring it up to Kanan for their son, and Cody told her that Obi Wan would love nothing else than to talk on his tips on raising the "Choosen One".
Topics changed quickly and everyone was in more than one conversation with some other little group, and Din sat and took it all in. He noticed Padme by the stove and helped her in checking for salt as she was too short for the big pot. She was going to bring it for tonight's dinner and Din was grateful to have her do most of the talking. He loved that soon, Fox had taken out more beer and everyone was relaxed and happy, and Din felt content. He felt better and he didn't even know he had felt in any distress before. It was not how his day was planned but he already knew his life was anything but normal. He hadn't realized he might need someone to ask whenever something that Luke taught Grogu left him confused but also made him feel stupid for not knowing, scared to ask. But those around him understood him, and that left him strangely comforted. He felt happy, and couldn't wait to get home to Luke and Grogu, to share this precious moments with his new family.
-----
On the other side of the town, on the outskirts, Luke felt a small disturbance as he and Grogu meditated. The Force wasn't warning him of any danger, but rather seemed to be … amused. Then, his door was thrown open, and Quinlan Vos barged in with a bunch of bags, most of beverages if the clanking was anything to go by. Behind him, all of his guests for the evening also entered, the loudest being his father and sister. For a moment, Luke panicked in thinking that he had somehow gotten too lost in mediation again and that the time for the dinner was upon them already. But then he saw the sun shining through the window, still high up in the sky signaling it was still before midday.
His father quickly grabbed him into a tight hug and lifted him from the ground, as Leia picked up Grogu. Quinlan was already making a ruckus in the kitchen and thankfully he saw Aayla follow to babysit her old Master. As Luke was losing breath in his lungs, his Uncle Obi Wan finally rescued him, but Anakin still held onto him, using him as a head rest. Neither him or Leia had grown as tall as Anakin and he delighted in reminding them about it.
Freed of his father's embrace, Luke also spotted Cal and Kanan now sat at the living room, cooing at Grogu who had been given some cookies by Leia and had run to be picked up by Cal. Grogu loved visiting Cal and Boba and their pet rankor, which left Din a bundle of nerves but Luke knew it was good for Grogu to have the chance to interact with all manner of creatures. As he was about to try to get away from Anakin for a moment to close the door, his trusty Artoo wheeled in, bickering with Threepio as the golden robot carried some more bags. Almost tripping Threepio was a small, white and red blur that went straight for Grogu. Luke recognized it as Cal's robot BD-1. Then, an orange and louder robotic voice hailed the entrance of Chopper, who also gave commentary on whatever Artoo was fighting Threepio about, for which the golden protocol droid took great offense as Chopper, Artoo and Anakin laughed. Finally, Ahsoka and Rex came in and close the door, his father's Padawan finally able to pull Luke away from Anakin to give him their own hugs.
"Not that I am not happy to see everyone, but the dinner was later in the evening wasn't it? I didn't mess up the invite?"
"Not at all, my little Sunburst! We just decided to take advantage of the other early get-together to come keep you company!" Anakin grabbed him again from Rex's side, leaving the Commander to roll his eyes and go say hello to Grogu in the living room.
"Get together?" Luke was very confused.
"The "In Love with a Jedi Support Group." Cal offered as he bounced Grogu up and down, BD cooing from his shoulder as the toodler happily babbled away at them.
"The-what?"
"Luke, we are going to need more wine glasses! You only have 4!" Quinlan shouted from the kitchen, sticking his head out.
"Uhm, Din went out to the market, he should be back soon with some more-"
"Ehhhh, actually, he was kidnapped so he'll be kinda late." Anakin said, going to try to take Grogu from Cal. The little one instead floated himself to Kanan, leaving a pouting Anakin, who mimed himself crying and dropping to the floor. Luke would have found it hilarious that Grogu was always a little mean towards Anakin for some reason whenever they met but was still worried that his boyfriend was kidnapped and no one around was at all worried.
"Kidnapped!?"
"I have the items he bought Master Luke! Not to worry!" Now looking closely, Grogu could see the bags were the ones Din had taken to the market with him, inside all the items they had been missing for their dinner. Aayla heard him and called out from the kitchen herself.
"Bring them here to the kitchen, Threepio!" Ahsoka helped him with one of the bags, but as they passed by the fake-crying Anakin who was still sobbing loudly for Grogu, she tossed and hit him in the head with a packet of cookies. Anakin immediately changed his tune and was easily the toddler's favorite from then on out. Rex, Cal, Leia and Kanan took turns in giving Grogu a cookie.
"Quin, it's too early for wine. Leave that for the evening dinner." Obi Wan had gone to help out in the kitchen, his voice carrying easily. Luke still felt rooted to the spot by the breakfast nook that was cleared for morning meditation. He walked towards his father, who was now again grumpy that someone else had Grogu's attention, Leia sticking her tongue out at him over Grogu's head.
"Dad, what do you mean Din was kidnapped?"
"It's never too early for wine, I say you open the bottle Quin." Anakin, forever happy to do and say the opposite of his old Master, gave a thumbs up to Quinlan who wasted no time, despite Obi Wan's clear annoyed look. Ahsoka and Aayla simply shared a laugh, both drinking water but accepting glasses of wine nonetheless.
"Dad!"
"He is safe Luke, he is with the others." Anakin offered, not all bother by his son's rising panic.
"What others?" Luke felt like he was going crazy. Finally, Ahsoka took pity on him and came by to direct him to the open spot on the sofa, giving everyone else a glass of wine except Anakin.
"Ok, ok, let me explain kiddo. During the Clone Wars, Cody, Fox and Bly where stumped in their secret relationships to Jedi so they formed a little club." She said. Anakin swipped her glass and took a big gulp, then yelped when a pillow was thrown at his face and the glass taken out of his hands. Grogu found great joy in that and attempted to do the same, encouraged by Cal and Leia.
"My sweet Angel found out and joined in to impart her wisdom." Anakin was so distracted by the mention of his wife, he never saw the 4 pillows coming straight for his head.
"A blessing, I was tired of them venting when we went out in between campaigns." Rex had no need for the Force, he just straight hit Anakin in teh back of the head with his own pillow, then gestured to Ahsoka who was behind Anakin. She directed two more pillows and both hit Anakin when Rex ducked down.
"But you said he got kidnapped?" Luke was still weary, they had yet to be attacked by people looking for the Darksaber here in their peaceful home, but both him and Din knew the leftover Death Watch members were relentless. He wasn't as panicked, if Din was with Cody, Fox and Bly, he could breath easier at least. His uncles were the most capable men he knew.
"Oh, don't worry, that's Fox trying to keep it all 'secret' because I tried to catch him the first few times way back when." Quinlan had finally come around, Aayla with him. She was carrying Anakin's glass with her, which he thank her. "It was a game between us. He still thinks that I don't know and will crash their party if I found out. Jokes on him, when I got wind of it, I just went for Obes and Aayla and we got our own club starte to gossip."
"Once your mother joined them, I got Anakin and we have been recruiting every time they do." Obi Wan sat down beside him, giving Grogu a sippy cup with blue milk and more cookies, which the baby squealed at and then proceeded to use the older man's lap as his seat to enjoy his snacks. Luke could only hope Grogu would take his lunch without much fuzz later on.
"It was nice, if a little weird when I teased Bly and he tried to keep it a secret." Aayla shared, leading to others to chuckle as well. Bly was a terrible liar, and it was funny to picture him trying.
"Yeah, no one but Fox is keeping it 'secret', Boba told me the minute he was on route when Fox tried to get him. Gave me updates all the way until he was sure it was just his brother being weird." Cal was now holding onto BD, who was trying to draw Grogu's attention. Chopper however, was taking all the attention as he showed Grogu some of the coloring pages he stored.
"Paranoid, you mean. But yeah, Fox gets all new members kidnapped to 'test them', or so Hera has said." Kanan was watching his droid closely, making sure he wouldn't take out the flamethrower to boast about it to Artoo, who also had coloring books and crayons for Grogu, each droid very competative if left un supervised.
"So, why not just let them know you all know about it?" Luke could not understand on keeping it a secret. Quinlan quickly shook his hands, laughing a little.
"No no, that's the fun part! Fox pretends that I don't know and gets to relieve some adrenaline from the old Guard mission days."
"Din is fine Luke, Cody assured me he was given the quick neutralizer when he passed me the bags." Obi Wan was as serene as ever, even if Luke's stomach dropped. But he had to admit that his uncle was right. Din would be in no danger, if by his calculations, Fox, Cody, Bly, Boba, Hera, Han and his own mother were with him.
"But, why now?" He had a feeling on the reason it had just happened, considering Din had been someone known to most of them for years.
"Because you finally got off you ass and confessed, little brother." Leia smirked and Luke had to resist the urge to stick his tongue out when he noticed that Grogu was looking at him. He still glared towards his twin.
"Language!" Obi Wan, Kanan and Anakin all shouted.
"I'm older than you!" Luke couldn't resist firing back, though.
"By a minute!"
"As if this little tyke didn't hear worse from Boba." Cal commented to the room at large, leading most to either nod or roll their eyes. Boba Fett had always been very expressive with his language, regardless of who was present, despite his older siblings attempts to get him to stop swearing so much.
"Cal, do not encourage this." Kanan lamented, knowing it was impossible that his son wouldn't have heard such language from Chopper, who just laughed as if he knew what the Jedi was thinking.
"I'm just saying. He doesn't mind, right little frog terrorizer?" Grogu had hopped down from Obi Wan's lap, dodged Anakin's attempts to pick him up and aksed Cal instead, who gladly took him.
"Patu!"
"How about some lunch?"Ahsoka offered, standing up and stretching her back.
"Yes, Quin only brought alcohol." Aayla mentioned, as Quinlan looked offended.
"It was a priority! I know they are drinking too!"
"I was going to go and get some takeout." Luke said, remembering his plan to surprise Din with food when he arrived.
"No need, we'll get it. C'mon Rexy. From that Alderaanian place Luke?" Ahsoka was often at their place and she knew all the best spots by now for takeout.
"Yeah." Luke said, standing up to get the menu from the kitchen.
"Gotcha, you guys look over the menu and let us know. Should only take us 10 minutes to get there." Ahsoka grabbed Grogu from Cal's lap, ignoring the huff from the red head and his attempts to retrieve the toddler, who was happy to be so high up.
"Grogu you're coming with us! Droids! We are rolling out! C'mon!"
"Right behind you Miss Ahsoka!"
"I could go with you-" Luke started to offer, before he was pull back by Obi Wan and Anakin.
"No no, you stay and unwind, talk about your boyfriend with the others and we'll handle the food. As honorary members of both 'secret' clubs, we are here to get you what you need. We'll also pop in after to check on the others, make sure Fox hasn't taken it too hard with the bets." Rex mentioned, following after his partner in crime behind the line of droids now headed for the door. He was glad Anakin had repaired Threepio so he was much faster now and less clunky when walking.
"Honorary members?"
"Ahsoka and Rex hang out in both groups for the entertainment, or so they say." Cal said, arms still crossed as both his droid and his favorite toddler left him.
"We like being informed and getting all the gossip. And taking care of the little ones and droids too. It's too bad Jacen couldn't make it this time." Ahsoka remarked, bouncing Grogu, who wanted to ride on top of Artoo. She let him, but kept close.
"He has been pestering us about going to visit Mace for months now, we had no idea Din would be drafted so soon. My bet was till the end of the year. I'll make sure to bring him next time." Kanan remarked, and then blanched when he realized his slip. He took a big gulp of his wine as Luke turned to him in suspicion.
"Shh, Kanan!" Aayla said, but it was too late.
"What bet?"
"No bet, nothing at all!" Anakin tried to stall, avoiding his son's stare as he tried to gather the secrets of the Force on his wine.
"That reminds me! Luke, I lost so many credits! That rat of Ohnaka got the biggest cut! You really couldn't wait two more weeks?" Quinlan whined, as he got pillows to the face now.
"Or been quicker by like 3 days?" Cal mentioned.
"I think the way they finally got together is very cute!" Aayle had also betted, but she wasn't going to add more fuel to the fire, unlike Anaking who chirped next.
"You didn't have so many credits riding on this, Aayla!"
"Dad! Not you as well!" Luke couldn't believe his family would bet on him and Din. Then he thought about for ten seconds and found out he could, actually, believe it.
"I think it was cute too." Obi Wan said, the picture of poise, until Leia called him out.
"Uncle, you also got a big cut, don't think I didn't find out!"
"Obi Wan!" Luke should have expected it.
"Obes!" Quinlan was not expecting it seemed.
"You liar! You told me you hadn't betted!" Anakin laughed, as Ahsoka and Rex stood by the door, watching as Artoo got farther away with a toddler on top of him.
"Yeah, ooook! Don't forget to look at that menu! Bye!" With that, they closed the door and left the bickering behind them. They were glad that there was forest all around, it sounded like Luke was now going full Padme on Anakin and the others.
"Who do you think Luke will go for first?" Rex wondered, as they caught up with the droids. Threepio had taken to watching over Grogu to make sure he didn't fall.
"Not Luke, Anakin and Quin will definitely get to Obi Wan before Luke even thinks about it."
"Hmm yeah. So, should we get our own lunch and then ask for their order?"
"Oh you bet, afterwards we should see how the others are doing. Cody wanted to make sure they wouldn't miss the dinner." Ahsoka remarked, smiling down at Grogu, who was having so much fun riding Artoo.
"Padme and Hera are there, how crazy could it get with them? Also, you know Din is responsible enough he won't forget." Rex said, but Ahsoka just scoffed.
"You forget that time they got Han to join, Padme was the one who had the idea of going to the zoo and Hera encouraged it." That had been a meeting they had spend with the Non-Sensitives, and it had been a crazy night. They were glad that Padme how covered up, otherwise the papers would have had a field day. Ahsoka had known that Padme and Anakin fit so well precisely because they shared a unique brand of crazy, that their children had ten-fold.
"I forget Anakin's craziness is contagious. Alright, how about it, Grogu? Want to eat something and then get to see your uncle Boba?" Rex had gotten Grogu up and placed him on his shoulders, to the toddler's delight.
"Patu!"
An hour later, everyone's comms went off when the Holo news started reporting of a bunch of Death Watch who had attemped to kidnapped Grogu and had been taken down by two flamethrowing droids, a Jedi Knight, a Clone Commander, a golden protocol droid who fretted about and a tiny BD droid. Ahsoka and Rex had attemped to get Grogu out of the fight, but BD-1 had electrocuted someone and almost been trampled, so Grogu had jumped in, which prompted Artoo and Chopper to start blasting everyone around. Threepio had panicked and sent the massive message right before the news had gone live and that's how everyone got to meet up earlier than expected back at Din and Luke's.
No one mentioned either 'secret' meeting, but they did enjoy their time together very much. Especially when Grogu got fed more blue cookies than he ever had, given that everyone kept slipping them when no one else was looking. Any he didn't eat once full, BD gave to Chopper to store. Artoo didn't do it because he would be the obvious choice and he kept Threepio occupied as he was 'worried for the sugar intake of the infant'. Kanan still caught them but Grogu had already passed out by then, leaving the adults to their own devices. Din and Luke kept shooting each other looks, each thinking how lucky they were to have such a loving family to have their back.
Thank you for reading till the end! May the Force be with You!

Okay I swear this will be my last rant post before the next episode airs but I have to get it off my chest cause I keep seeing the argument made that people disappointed Din gave the darksaber away are forgetting the lack of plot in the previous seasons, which I very heavily disagree.
I can’t speak for everyone, but at least for me when I’m saying I’m disappointed Din did not become Manda’lor I am not saying I hated the adventure of the week side quest format they had. That’s what I liked best about the show! It was great in season 1 feeling like Din was just the random guy off on his own adventure with this baby he found, I would have loved for it to have kept that small space western feel. Season 3 becoming this big interconnected universe with a corrupted New Republic plot connecting to the sequels is what I was most worried about just because I personally don’t like that direction. The more they’ve tried to go the Andor route and make this show about the Galatic politics, the worst it’s become imo (we literally have two white dudes writing a plot point about droids liking being underclass and serving the soft democratic people that is ruled with the help of a former Nazi, but ohh it’s okay it’s Jack Black and he’s funny and the Space Nazi and the Space Nazi doctor are really sorry for what they did, look the New Republic is just as bad as the fascist imperials 🥺🥺)
What some people are not getting is that the darksaber is ALL. DIN. HAD. LEFT. There was no driving force or goal for him after episode 2, they reunited him with his child in a spin-off show, they have him redeem himself fairly easily without any emotional impact, and now they took away the opportunity to do one last interesting thing with him. Din does not have his own actions or thoughts throughout most of the season, and when he does it’s just retracing the character development they already gave him in previous seasons (i.e. the whole droid fiasco). He’s a plot device, meant to further Bo-Katan’s character and help her with her goals or have him in danger so she can save him. It was okay if Din did not become Manda’lor, but they can’t just make him having the darksaber out to be a huge deal, show him trying to learn how to train with it, and give it up so stupidly through a loophole just so Bo-Katan can lead again when she has done nothing to actually earn it or apologize for the way she disrespected Din’s entire culture again and again. She was a terrorist who has done a 180 into suddenly being an honorable character just because of a few action scenes, no introspection or interesting conflict between her and the covert about their differences, nothing about her actually thinking about her past mistakes, just the covert being there to look like dumbasses who settled on a dangerous planet where their children get eaten so Bo can lead missions, look a million times more competent in comparison, and suddenly be the one who deserves to lead.
There doesn’t have to be a big plot each episode, but it’s not being executed well like it was in the first two seasons. The goal was getting Grogu to a Jedi, and we were given the interesting side adventures on that journey. Din needs to find somewhere he can lay low, he goes to Sorgan and becomes tempted by a domestic life. Din needs credits, he takes a job with some old acquaintances and sees what kind of slimy person he could have been. Din needs to find other mandos to help him find a Jedi, he runs into a small town desperate for help with a Krayt Dragon and showcases his pride in being a Mandalorian but his respect for other cultures and his willingness to do the right thing. He travels to a planet ruled by an former Imperialist because the Jedi he was searching for was there and helps her to save a town both for their sake and his need to give his son the best life he can have. See the pattern? They were side adventures, but they weren’t a random hodgepodge of ideas, they fit the story and the tone, giving us interesting side characters and helping to develop our main characters. Din showed his leadership, his growing kindness, his frustrations, his annoyances, his fears, Grogu becomes more adventurous, vocal, and attached to who he’s starting to see as a father figure. They both aren’t talkative characters, but they had feelings and personalities we saw. They had moments between them that wasn’t just exposition for the plot or a push towards an action scene, it showed their lives and values, their relationships. Little moments like Din being happy to hear Grogu’s name, Cobb sharing his story and why he valued the armor, Omera talking with Din about his life and wondering if he could stay, Frog Lady wanting to get her eggs safely to her husband and Din comedically trying to make that happen. The story was driven by these characters decisions and their personalities.
Season 3, on the other hand, has taken away all the life of these side adventures in its goal to tie in a larger Star Wars narrative that connects to other shows. They are not character driven anymore, and instead the characters are being twisted and molded to do and say stuff that’ll get us from point A to point B instead of the other way around. The point of Din breaking his creed is not to see what that would mean for his identity or how he wants to live with Grogu by his side, the point is to take him to Mandalore so that he can ultimately get trapped and fall down a hole so Bo-Katan can see the Mythosaur. The point of Bo-Katan’s crew leaving her and her staying in a random castle for no reason doing nothing all day isn’t for her to recognize her past failings or show us what their relationship was like and what it meant to her, it’s to have an easy offscreen explanation so that she can come to the covert without anything challenging in the way. The point of Din’s coverts staying on a monster-infested planet where Paz’s son is kidnapped isn’t because it makes sense they’d be there or that Paz suddenly even has a son we’ve never seen before, it’s so they can put in CGI monsters they thought were cool and have Bo save the day so they can have a flimsy reason she does need to be leader again. The point of spending time with the covert and having random pirates attacking Nevarro wasn’t to develop the other mandalorians as actual characters, it was to have them accept Bo easily so that she can “walk both worlds” and give Carl Weather’s character more screentime. And so much more.
Things are happening, but it doesn’t matter whether they make sense or fit the characters anymore, because all the side quest are focused on is bending over backwards trying to make you believe this Bo deserves the darksaber narrative. Before that it wasn’t like the Covert was planning to take back Mandalore, Din wasn’t planning to take back Mandalore, Bo didn’t tell anybody what she saw so there was no real stakes for anybody. Nobody in the main plot has had any purpose as more than side characters besides her. Din may have been the main character, but the people he met on his journey didn’t just do stuff to contribute to his own character or finding a Jedi. Omera had her own goals, Cobb had his own goals, Fennec had her own goals, Boba had his own goals, and they all still worked well with the narrative without diminishing each other, Din developed on the way by learning from the other characters and them him. What the fuck does Din want this season? Paz? The Armorer? The answer is whatever will make it easiest for the plot to retake Mandalore and have Bo be the Manda’lor for these writers, despite it being shown previously they have no reason to care or like Bo-Katan.
Like, some character moments are there. Bo is changing. I’m not saying that’s not happening at all. But it’s being done in a way that is sabotaging every other aspect of the show to force this plot that they wanted, the sidequest are feeling duller because they aren’t for these characters to have fun adventures we get emotionally invested in that simultaneously furthers the actual main characters goal, it’s let’s just have a CGI dragon, let’s have Lizzo and Jack Black guest star, let’s have Zeb from Rebels be in there for no reason. Unless again you count Bo as the main character, but like honestly she’s not even having natural character development. She went from being an antagonistic ex-terrorist to suddenly being kind and charitable with hardly any buildup or insight into her feelings. It doesn’t feel organic. I know she lost everything, but they still made it seem like she blamed Din for it only to have her rescue him once and completely abandon that hostility. The best we really have gotten is Grogu remembering his past while with the armorer and setting up his future as a Mandalorian, but even that feels cheapened when the armor he was given isn’t even talked about with the person who he shares the symbol with him that signifies their relationship, making me think it’s just another merchandise decision.
We wanted Din to learn to rule because, even if we did have to say goodbye to the adventure of the week type format, it would have been in service of his character evolving into something he doesn’t think he deserves or is good at. It would have been the next step in his journey, accumulating everything he has learned, the growth he went through using both diplomacy and his skills as a fighter time and time again. Instead, they chose to really quickly ditch any of the conflicts he had so they could have him free to do this instead. If they had waited one more season, this could have possibly been done well imo. Din’s arcs could have been brought to a meaningful and satisfying conclusion, and then you could have made him and Bo-Katan become co-leads. It wouldn’t have mattered as much then if they decided to focus a little more on her. But instead they essentially abandoned Din’s story they’ve spent two seasons creating to go ahead and tell her own.
The side quest aren’t what people are complaining about. It’s that they have no meaning for our characters other than having everybody circling around Bo most of the time or creating some big connection to the sequel triology and setting up the Star Wats MCU, which wasn’t the style of writing this show did. I don’t care how many ways people want to argue against it, Din is not the main character in this season, which is not what they have been selling us all year, and he doesn’t even have any engaging story or arc as a side character either. That is the problem, and that is why these side quest and the lack of an actual plot do not work.

Concept Art For My Ashla!Obi AU

Ashla
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ashla are Ethereal Beings created of and perpetually, incorruptibly aligned with the Light Side of the Force that live in Deep Space in Nomadic Flocks. They are mostly seen out in the depths of Wild Space or the Outer Rim, though they have been known to travel as far inwards as the fringes of the Mid Rim. They originated on a moon orbiting the planet Tython, called Ashla, a Light-Side Aligned Moon to Tython’s Bendu (Force Balance) and the second Dark-Side Aligned Moon Bogan.
On Mandalore, they are the Jai’galaar - or the Shriek-Hawks - from which they adorn their helmets with the Jaig Eyes as a reward for great acts of bravery, one of the greatest symbols of honor their people could bestow. Jai’galaar are often Deified as the greatest, most perfect examples of what Nomadic Warriors should be, as Ashla are famously pitted against the Bogans in myth and legend. To kill one is to incur a death penalty, and to befriend one is to be blessed by the Manda and Ka’ra. It was said that entire Civil Wars were ended when an Ashla chose a ruler.
For the Jedi, whose Religious Order was born on Tython, the Ashla are the highest form of devotion to the Light that can be displayed. The blessing and friendship of an Ashla is considered a sign from the Force that their Order has not strayed from its calling. They devote significant energy towards trying to keep the Ashla from being hunted into extinction.
Ashla are prized for their Wings, which are quite beautiful, and their Ichor (blood). A single drop of blood can extend the human lifespan by a hundred years, and their wings are trophy items for the discerning collector who has friends on the Black Market and no moral scruples. Very few Hunter Cultures allow the killing of an Ashla, as it is seen as the killing of something so pure - Guardians protecting the Galaxy from the Dark and Evil - that it is tantamount to a death penalty. When the Hutts rose to power, they found Ashla Wings to be status of power and wealth, and employed their Bounty Hunters to poach them.
Ashla are humanoid beings that have smooth, extremely durable hairless skin save for the very silky soft hair on top of their heads with a very slight sheen to it. This skin is covered in bioluminescent freckles that glow white-gold in the dark and in space. Their wings are feathered on the top portion of the wing joints and the “meat” of the wing, which extends to the mid-back, and are colored in metallic palettes that match their hair colors. After this “meat” portion, much like the Shyyyo Birds of Kashyyyk, an Ashla’s wings are composed of translucent Dragonfly Wing-like feathers that are very strong, light, durable, and easy compressed. These feathers fall to the upper calves but don’t take up much room, and don’t require any preening unlike the much smaller feathers at the top of the wings.
Ashla have smaller, more willowy body types with hollow bones stronger than Beskar. They are generally much stronger than humans, and have six fangs. Two are smaller on their lower canines, two a bit longer on their upper canines, and a second set of fangs right behind the upper canines. These canines are supplied with venom glands, the venom being so potent a toddler could kill a Greater Krayt Dragon with a single bite. Their eyes glow entirely white-gold in the dark.
Mandalorians call Ashla “Shriek-Hawks” because they have a legendary shrieking roar that can be let off when asserting dominance over other species as the most dangerous Apex Predators in the nearby vicinity. Ashla can also understand the songs of Convors, and have their own language composed of chirps, trills, screeches, and warbles. It is more like Morse, and they can easily mimic the sounds of other animals to draw in prey or warn off potential predators. This also applies to mimicking other people’s voices, and enables them to be capable of learning any language they so choose without any vocal cord limitations. Ashla are telepathic and empathic, enabling them to learn languages quickly and to more easily understand a person’s thoughts and feelings. It is difficult to lie or conceal things from Ashla.
Ashla have an inner Starfire burning in their Cores, white-gold, and this keeps them warm in the vacuum of space as they wreathe themselves in it as they fly. This fire also heals injury, cures infection, and burns poison. It is deadly to Dark-Side users and can burn them to ash, but is harmless to those that follow the Light. This Starfire is pure Light Force Energy; as Ashla are Light Side Creatures, they are very strong in the Force with Midichlorian Counts well into the 20,000s.
An Ashla’s Ichor, when burned in Starfire, can calcify into Solari Crystals which can be used to power Lightsabers - but only Lightsabers for those who follow the Light.
Ashla have limited shapeshifting abilities, making it easy for them to hide from persecution or to conceal their true natures. This ability has limitations however, as they are only able to really transform into humans or human hybrids, though they can also become Convors. Their baseline forms are more toned down after millennium of interaction with other species in the Galaxy, and it is said their True Forms can drive a person mad.

What are you working on right now?
“You all right?” Neyo asks, faintly wary as he watches Ponds out of the corner of his eye. “You seem.” He stops, clearly fighting with descriptions for a moment before he settles on, “Distracted.”
Ponds has twelve detailed plans for murdering another commander, and twenty-seven that still need the kinks worked out. He’s been working at them all night. “I'm fine,” is what he says, though, because outright saying I want to murder Wolffe to defend the general’s honor will probably get him a sideways look. “Didn’t sleep well last night, that’s all.”
Neyo raises a brow. “Even though the general is back?” he asks. “He’s safe with the 91st now.” Pauses, and then says, with an edge to the words, “And not married now.”
Before Ponds can answer, a door down the hall ahead of them hisses open. The right door, and Ponds’s heart jumps. He finds he’s smiling without even meaning to, and even Neyo's usual scowl has lightened into something like relief as he steps forward—
It’s not Mace who exits Mace's bedroom, though. It’s Wolffe, still settling his kama around his hips, vambraces and gauntlets in hand, helmet under one arm. His hair is too short to be messy, but Ponds is absolutely convinced it looks ruffled, like he was just recently asleep and hasn’t fixed it yet.
The hiss of Neyo's indrawn breath is roughly the same as the warning growl of a particularly angry krayt dragon, and a hand clamps shut around Ponds’s vambrace, so tight Ponds can feel it through the plastoid.
And then, worse, so much worse but also better, Mace steps into the doorway, clad in a loose white sleeping shirt with a wide collar. It dips bellow his sharp collarbones, shows part of his chest, makes his lean and dangerous figure into something captivating, breathtaking. That’s the best part. Mace could never be anything else.
But Mace is in sleeping clothes and Wolffe is just putting his armor on, and they were both in Mace's bedroom after working late together. Ponds is going to throw something. Something sharp, preferably right at Wolffe’s head.
“Thank you, Wolffe,” Mace says, and Wolffe snorts, steps in. He crowds Mace up against the doorframe, right where anyone could see. Right where Ponds and Neyo can see. Doesn’t go in for a kiss, but tugs Mace's head down, one traitorous hand curled around the back of Mace's neck like he has no kriffing idea that Ponds is about to cut it off and feed it to him.

Not to derail @yukipri 's excellent recap of Galidraan post but they brought up an interesting point I wanted to expand on.
For reasons unclear to us readers, Jango decides to do a job for information on Death Watch instead of just interrogating the Governor of Galidraan for it.
Jango might have made that choice because he was Jaster's heir and Jaster wrote the Supercommando Codex; essentially a Code of Conduct and Ethics. Jango might have been following Jaster's rulebook to the point of Honor before Reason. (to pull a quote from the TVTropes page, "Quite often this kind of decent, chivalrous behavior will come at a great cost to the hero's happiness, kill them outright, or similarly leave them a destroyed human being". Which, yeah.)
On the other hand, this might just be a Mandalorian cultural aspect. We see Din in The Mandalorian agree to similar "favor for a favor" deals. Din agrees reluctantly to the egg hunt in return for his stolen ship parts and takes out the Krayt Dragon in return for Cobb Vanth willingly handing over the Mandalorian armor in his possession. Boba Fett, whose relationship with being Mandalorian is Complicated(TM), goes above and beyond to help Din rescue Grogu because they had a deal.
In Rebels, Sabine talks about how she realized what she was doing for the Empire was wrong. How she stood up and spoke out against her own actions, and she got abandoned for it. When she expected her people, especially her family, to stand by her.
In the Kotor comics, Cassus Fett takes owing Zayne Carrick a favor seriously. Staging a fake invasion with a fleet of Mandalorian ships levels of serious. Rohlan Dyre also acts similarly, though his story is pretty complicated to get into.
According to Karen Traviss, Mandalorians don't have a concept of Heroes because everyone is supposed to act proactively to protect the community.
I think overall, there's this concept that Mandalorians are a people of action but also community. That isn't ever really focused on and written out but is present across depictions of Mandalorians in Legends and Canon.
(It's a hard concept to concisely articulate because the best description for it that I can think of RPG Protagonist if an entire culture created RPG Protagonists.)

kit’s foray into another star wars ship (dinluke)
is kit a) expanding her horizons, b) running from her responsibilities, or c) inspired by that fan art of force ghost anakin hugging r2d2 (linked when found) and me thinking ok what if luke is trying to do run-of-the-mill maintenance on artoo but force ghost anakin won’t stop trying to suggest what needs fixing so they’re just bickering back and forth over droid engineering and din walks in to visit his kid and just sees luke arguing with thin air and starts thinking maybe he left grogu in the care of a madman
(so far just 1k, but here’s the first 800)
Din lives his life by one very important creed.
Alright, two very important creeds.
The first is the one that he grew up with, mantra stamped across the back of his eyelids, words imprinted in his brain. The Way of the Mandalore is a way of honor, and it serves as pillar, foundation, and guiding stone of his life.
The second creed Din obeys is not ingrained into his mind by anyone but himself, and he’s fucking shit at following it.
It’s the Do Not Get Involved Unless You’re Dragged Into The Fight Kicking and Screaming creed, and it goes hand in hand with the principles of Do Not Start Fights You Cannot End Within Twenty Seconds and For the Love of the Stars, Djarin, Don’t Go Around Poking Sleeping Krayt Dragons.
Alright. If he’s being honest, this is less of a creed and more of an aspiration, but he tries to abide by its tenets, and, it has to be said, for a good portion of his life, he does.
And then he finds the kid.
And then the kid becomes his kid, which is an adjustment he’s dragged into kicking and screaming, and it definitely involves a lot of fights that last a whole lot longer than twenty seconds.
And trying to find a Jedi in a galaxy as big and strange as this one? Apparently it involves a lot more sleeping Krayt Dragons than Din’s second creed accounted for.
But finding one—or, one finding them as it may be—well. No creed Din knows prepared him for how it felt to watch his kid be taken away from him. It’d been the optimal future, the end result he’d been gunning for for months: return the kid to his people.
There. Done. Returned. Package received.
Din’s been around long enough that successful bounties and completed contracts don’t tend to fill him with a warm rush of satisfaction anymore.
But this is the first that’s ever left him feeling hollow.
—-------------
“What’s been eating at you, Mando?” Karga asks.
Din scowls and resists the urge to shift his weight. “Nothing.”
Karga raises an eyebrow and takes a sip from the cooling purple drink in front of him.
“You wanted the Imp,” Din says when the silence stretches from pointed into weighted. “Here’s the Imp.”
He nudges the head further across the table.
“I wanted the Imp for questioning,” Karga says very slowly. “Ideally with his vocal cords attached.”
Oh. Din glances down at the bloody bag. “Oh.”
He doesn’t try to sound very apologetic, which only seems to make Karga’s exasperation grow.
“So I ask again. What’s eating you, Mando?”
“Right now, bounties with unclear parameters.”
“Right now, you’ve only earned half the bounty, and that’s because I’m a generous man who considers you a friend. Now I can see ourselves coming to agreement on what you’re owed—if you tell me what’s on your mind.”
Behind the safety of his helmet, Din scowls harder. “Friend.”
Greef kicks the chair across from him out and tilts his cup towards it. “Friend.”
—-----------
Two hours later, Din is thoroughly convinced he used his glowing new Darksaber to sever the wrong person’s head.
Greef hasn’t stopped laughing in the last ten minutes. The man’s red in the face, alternating between pounding his fist on the table and leaning against his new marshal. Dune, for her part, is expressing the highest amount of mirth Din’s ever seen as she hiccups with glee into her third drink.
He’s really starting to calculate the probability of successfully taking Karga’s coin purse off him now that he’s distracted, when the man finally chokes out whole words.
“Worried the Jedi’s too violent to raise the little green guy!”
Din crosses his arms over his chest.
Dune roars with laughter.
Din doesn’t think it’s very funny. The Jedi sliced through the ranks of Dark troopers within mere seconds, as if they were no threat at all. It’d been impressive. The man—the Jedi—had been impressive. Din was impressed by his skill when he had the space to feel anything outside the devastation of losing the kid.
But a man that versed in violence doesn’t learn those sorts of skills without being surrounded by death and destruction for years.
And Din just gave his kid over to be raised in that kind of environment?
Was Grogu even safe? Was he alive? Was the Jedi even lookin—
“The bounty hunter thinks the kid’s new home is too violent,” Karga cackles. “The guy—the guy who just brought me a man’s head in a pouch is worried about the little green guy’s new—-”
Dune snorts out her drink, she’s laughing so hard, and Din stands to leave.
If he knicks Karga’s coin purse on his way out the cantina, then hey.
What are friends for?

The Letter
Eli, my dearest friend,
It has been decades since our first meeting, and I feel I must thank you for the years that you have, for lack of better words, put up with my "krayt spit". I do not know if it was fate or merely luck that you were aboard that vessel that found me, though I have never believed in fate and one must not rely on luck, some star shined in my favor that day that it was you, Eli Vanto.
Through the years, you have never wavered. You have remained my closest confidant, and on occasion my savior. Though I am aware that you were bitter about the divert in your life track, your skills would have been throughly wasted as a supply officer. And I am pleased that you came to recognize that as well, in time. I would not have made it this far, neither in the Empire nor even back home to the Ascendancy without your help and guidance. I am a better man for your influence.
You have come far, my friend, look at yourself, a commodore in the Chiss Expansionary Defence Fleet. With many more promotions and honors to come, I have no doubts in you. You have learned much, and have become one of the greatest warriors I know. You are aware of what others are not, and have developed a skill for improvisation. A necessary tool for any commander.
Look after those who remain, instruct them in the ways of a warrior. Continue the work that we started and pass it on when you meet your own demise. Continue to live.
I leave you all that I have, my knowledge. I have added to the journal, utilize it. Do not mourn me, Eli Vanto, I am now with my brother.
May warrior's fortune smile upon you.
- written by Mitth'raw'nuruodo, left to Eli'van'to upon his death

I miss reptile daddy-husband #4. How is he? How is my cute lil scaly baby?
Is Bossk hot-headed? How does he deal with being annoyed or pissed off? Does he just walk off? Assuming this is for someone he likes????? Also, what's Bossk's biggest red flag?
Tumblr media
ILOVEHIMSOMUCH.
Tumblr media
LOL. HMMMmmmm.
He is definitely hot-headed. I feel we see that in the Clone Wars at least, and for that brief appearance he made in Dark Disciple. Even though he’s quick to be annoyed, I think he knows how to control it too -- when the situation calls for it. He knows how to live to fight another day, in other words. Granted, I am not a Bossk expert and there is A LOT of source material, especially in the Legends books. He also appears in a lot of comics, but I have yet to read these.
He can be moody and rather serious. He’s very efficient and ruthless when it comes to his job. He doesn’t take any bullshit, but he gives respect to those who deserve it, like Boba Fett for example. He follows the kid and is a part of his gang, Krayt’s Claw, for a good long while during / after the Clone Wars, so he is capable of working alongside others.
He’s also fair and honest and upholds the bounty code at all costs, so you might say he is a man of honor. I assume when he’s pissed and doesn’t have an outlet he seethes, lets it fester, and shows it through a bad attitude. He makes it EVERYONE’S problem until it can be resolved. I am sure he shows his emotions outwardly more so than hiding it inside.
If it came to someone he likes, wink, wink he might be a little more patient, or a little more easily able to forgive their transgressions, but I suppose it would depend on the situation and what he’s upset about. Maybe he does have the ability to take the high road, walking it off so he can blow off some steam before things get out of hand. I see him as intelligent and intuitive. He helped trained Boba for goodness’s sake, and acted as a sort of father figure toward him. But of course he also ate most of his hatch mates and killed his own father, so.
I bet his biggest red flag are hunters who lie and cheat the system, those who don’t follow the code, or those who act in ways that are untrustworthy. Like I said, he’s super into honor and most likely loyalty by default. If you “cheat” on him, don’t expect to get any second chances.

Concept art by Anton Grandert of the rancor on Tatooine, in Mos Epsa crashing through a courtyard and holding a speeder. Image from The Book of Boba Fett, Season 1, Episode 7, In the Name of Honor.
“Ship’s log: It’s day 134, officially Taungsday, at midday. Grogu has insisted that we travel to Dathomir to evaluate it as a potential location to re-home ‘Ranky’ if anything happens to Fett, Fennec, the rancor keeper, and those creepy monks that infest… I mean inhabit, the palace. I gotta say I’ve been to some real skugholes, but this place beats them all by a couple of parsecs. I’ll be completing a couple passes around the planet to collect appropriate data on the atmosphere, any living creatures, and any potential threats. Grogu keeps wrinkling his nose, and while cute, I think it’s a sign that the place smells ‘Sithy’. He’s made that face before and it’s always turned out that the person, critter, or place had some association with the Sith. Just imagine my surprise that a rancor comes from a place that you can detect the ‘Sithiness’ it gives off from orbit. Hope the Force covers us, because I can’t imagine how the Creed could. Din Djarin out.”
The Mandalorian looked over his shoulder and was at least glad that Grogu hadn’t been paying any attention to his log entry. Instead he was practicing his various meditations. Apparently the Jedi had a whole catalog of mediations that they used to prepare for things. He’d heard about the battle meditation. A Jedi, who was appropriately tuned into the Force and sufficient strength, and thoroughly practiced could turn the tide of battle whichever way they wanted it to go according to legend. Since the Jedi hadn’t won any major battles since the Clone Wars it was pretty clear that no one had met any of those criteria.
After the battle meditation, there was the Pathfinder meditation. Similar in many ways to the battle meditation, the pathfinder allowed a Jedi, under all those same criteria, to find a path to any place under and circumstances and traverse it safely. Again, there had been no indication that any of Grogu’s masters had been able to perform that meditation either. Although, the story Grogu told of helping Ian escape from the Jedi Temple did seem like the output of some sort of miracle, Grogu had commented that he really hadn’t had the time and foresight to use that meditation to help solve that problem. He and Ian were just good at climbing trees.
The next meditation that Grogu had talked to the Mandalorian about was the one the small Force worker seemed to use all the time. It was called Charm Creature. It puzzled the bounty hunter that Grogu had only mentioned it passing and that he had to get his apprentice to elaborate on what it was and how it worked. As it turned out, it still worked like all the others, but Grogu was so good at it he managed to do the steps in something like a wave of his hand.
It had saved him from the Mudhorn, the Krayt dragon (Grogu told him that no one was paying attention to him, but he was certainly paying attention to that Krayt dragon), and then Ranky, when the critter went berserk because of the Scorpenek annihilator droids. All it had looked like to him was Grogu holding up one hand and kind of holding his breath. Then the rancor took a deep shuddering breath and began to fall asleep. Grogu had informed him that it wasn’t that easy, but he could hardly expect a Mandalorian to understand all the nuances. Din Djarin would have grounded the little krill-crabby patty for being so sassy, but the kid had just saved his life again.
Right now Grogu was practicing the ‘Everything in its place’ meditation which he said helped him understand a new place faster. Where he could find places to hide, or places to stash snacks, or places that could get you away from danger even if hiding from danger was impossible or at the very least, highly unlikely. The Mandalorian had asked him if his plan covered hiding someone as big as his dad and Grogu and grinned widely and began to laugh. There was something to the laugh that was unnerving and Din Djarin wondered what story his son hadn’t told him yet. No doubt how he’d helped his friend Ian study rathtars and had to help smuggle them into the Temple from whatever crate or aquarium they had been at.
The thought made him shudder. Grogu was capable of doing many things and the more time he spent training, the more amazing they were. Amazing and terrible. Since the little guy had been able to keep the terrible part focused on ex-Imps, the Mandalorian hadn’t worried about it too much. But now he was worried. They would be landing on Dathomir whenever Grogu gave him the signal and it was all so they could find a home for a critter that couldn’t even fit in any ship they had ready access to.
Now, Din Djarin really shuddered. He couldn’t even imagine what sort of ship Grogu had in mind for his impossible to predict rescue mission that they both hoped would never come to pass. At least Din Djarin knew he hoped it would never come to pass. He was a little worried that Grogu knew something else about Dathomir and this reconnaissance mission was more about that and less about the rancor.
“Hey, buddy? Are you almost ready? We’ve done our passes around the planet. The data is all over the place. Are you sure you want to check it out? We could go to Felucia. I understand rancors live there as well.”
Grogu opened his eyes and looked up at him and locked onto the Mandalorian’s gaze.
“Purrgil”
“Purrgil?”
“Purrgil”
The Mandalorian wondered if that was the name of new meditation when R5 beeped at him.
“Space whales? Dank Farrik! What do space whales have to do with anything?”
Between R5 and Grogu they managed to explain it all to the Mandalorian.
“Ship’s log. Amended entry. We are not at Dathomir to evaluate it for the rancor. We are waiting here for it’s ride to show up so Grogu can explain to the space whales, when and where to collect it. Apparently he was using another Jedi meditation called 'Sight from Beyond’. It lets him sense major changes in the balance of the Force and prepare for them. When asked why that hadn’t helped the Jedi he replied that you have to listen to warnings. Great. After the ‘meeting’ we’re headed back to Nevarro, I hope. All this meditation has given me a headache. Mando out.”

Facing the Krayt, part 2
Leia, in the time after poisoning Jabba, waited in silence. Her back burned with pain like knives, the perfectly parallel lines from the elctrowhip pulling and stretching as she breathed.
First dawn passed, sky alight with pinks like Nabooian lake lillies. No one came to pull her out. Second dawn approached, red like blood staining the sky. A pair of guards approached and grabbed her arms yanking her from the cellar she was locked in.
Jabba’s majordono greeted her.
“The Mighty Jabba has decided your punishment. You will be facing the Sandstorm. If you survive, you will return to misting, little girl.”
Leia’s eyes burned, and her ears rang with the rattle of bones, the roar of a Krayt Dragon. She said nothing.
Bib Fortuna appeared almost disappointed.
“Put her outside the gates. She will walk into the Dune Sea. After the sandstorm passes, we will track her chip and return her- or her body.”
Leia’s face becomes like a nabooian lake. Placid, calm.
Unfathomably deep. Filled with dangers. She walked between the guards, listening as the call of the burning sands grew louder, snippets of words beginning to become heard.
She was shoved out the back gate of the palace. Her sheer clothes providing nothing to stop the wind. Her enslaved sisters had placed what few things they had set aside outside the walls, hidden beneath a rock with a tzai plant. She covered herself in the long, midnight blue cloak. Her barefeet covered in sturdy shoes. She armed herself with protection from the Burning Suns.
Then she walked.
As both suns reached the peak of their arc, the sandstorm was seen. The whipping winds, the knife like sand, the wall of darkness.
Leia saw its approach. She pulled goggles over her eyes, a sheer scarf over her mouth and nose. She breathed as the front running dust blew past. One last breath, and the storm was upon her.
The world turned black. Her clothing ripped into by wind. The world turned red.
A voice calling from deeper in the storm.
“Come, my child. Face the storm. Face your brother. Find your soul.”
Leia reached inside herself. The fathomless deep lake. The eternal mountain storm. The endless desert. A wall cracks.
Shatters.
Her mind fills with light. Even in the midst of the sandstorm, ghosts walk beside her, their beautiful presences splitting sky from sand.
“Hello there, little ghost.”
Leia smiles. “Ben!”
Ben- Obi-Wan- smiles and starts to speak, but is yanked into the wind.
Another flash- a red bird- there and gone again.
“Oh, darling.”
Leia’s eyes fill with tears. “Daddy.”
Bail Organa smiles, and his ghostly form embraces her.
“Face your Trial, daughter mine. With courage, strength, and wisdom. Your soul is of three peoples. You honor them all.”
Leia reaches out with grasping hands, tears freely flowing.
His ghost vanishes. Leia presses onwards. A woman, face hosting crows feet and the beginning of laugh lines. Her mouth moves, but no sound escapes. Her blue shaw flaps in the sandstorm’s breeze as she vanishes.
A beautiful woman, chest filled with lights like lightning bugs, appears. “Leia… Daughter… Child of Many. What do you seek?”
Leia, crying as she smiles. “Freedom. Myself. Hope.”
Breha Organa’s face becomes more real. “The go daughter. Lukka The sandstorm has your answers.”
“Wait- Momma- don’t leave yet- I’m sorry I failed-“
Though her blue glowing figure was gone, her voice rang like the wind chimes on Alderaan. “Oh Beloved. You could never have failed. You upheld the best parts of Alderaan. You protected hope. You survived. Thats all Bail or I could ask.”
Leia knew she wouldn’t find them again in this storm.
Before her, an orange flight suit covered in jedi robes runs forwards. Luke’s curly hair bouncing as he laughs joyously. Leia chases him.
The Krayt chases the Sandstorm. The Sandstorm chases the Krayt.
He vanishes. The little red bird is hopping before her, the barest of outline. It’s beak opens.
“Why do you walk the sandstorm, Child of Me?”
“I face the storm for a call, for a punishment from Depur.”
The redbird changes, becoming a brunette with a scar and a metal tube at his waist.
“The walk, Daughter of the Desert Lakes Mountains. The Mother awaits.”
Leia walks. The Dune sea laid out before her. Far in the distance, a rock face with plants blooming out of it is visible.
Directly before her is a woman dressed in layers, a pouch with a starburst and a bronze braclet is waiting.
“Water, Seeker?”
Leia nods and drinks deeply. “What is your name, Grandmother?”
“Shmi, granddaughter. I have wondered where you were when your twin crossed the sands.”
Leia blinks. “Shmi, I think you are mistaken. I have no twin.”
Shmi smiles. “I could never be mistaken. Lukka is only given as a name when there is a Leia beside him.”
Leia is stunned. Shmi gives a small secret smile. “Walk onwards, Granddaughter. Face your mother and yourself. Walk onwards, Leia Organa Ekkreth.”
Shmi vanishes.
Leia does as bid. Sitting before the cave in bloom is a women Leia has only seen in dreams. Long brown hair, so like her own. Deep blue dress. White, star-like flowers dotting her hair and dress.
“Hello, Padmè Amidala.”
“Hello, my daughter.”
And the area fills with light. A thousand snippets of a moment. A thousand chances to see what could have been. A moment with who was.
She sees Luke being taken away, sees Bail hold her for the very first time. Sees her mother breath her last. Sees her father and her mother breathe together, love each other.
Sees Vader.
Padmè kisses her forehead and says “Face yourself, my beautiful daughter. You must remember.”
Leia grasps her hand one last time as she fades. The cave, with blooming flowers and jagged teeth. A shuddering breath like a death rattle blows past.
Leia steps forward.
———
Leia never shared what she learned in that cave. It is a small, secret vision she keeps from all but one.
But she learned. For Leia the Krayt Dragon, Elder Sister, was waiting there. And Leia knew her soul. For no chain has been made that can bind her to not escape, and none ever will.
Leia returns after 7 days in the desert. She walks through the gates of Jabba’s palace, and they did not need to track her. She was in perfect health.
Lukka Luke came the next day. Leia strangled Jabba with the chains he thought would bind her, would break her.
She freed herself and her sisters. Her sisters embraced her as she left to face the Depur of the Empire.
Lukka looks at Leia, and they both know the other like a forgotten friend come back into your life.
The Krayt chases the Sandstorm. The Sandstorm faces the Krayt.
Leia, after freeing the Empire, brings Lukka back to Tatooine. The Burning Twins help their people take back their planet.

The durasteel plates felt wrong as he hefted them into his hands, the weight of them too uncomfortably heavy, the steel too weak to keep him safe from a lightsaber hit. It was days like this, when he’d take the armor apart to clean and mend, that Canderous missed the rough feel of beskar beneath his fingertips, the coolness of the iron, the pride at being able to tend to such a beautiful set of armor, to be able to wear it.
There was nothing better than being a Mandalorian with a reliable set of tools.
But he wasn’t a Mandalorian anymore. Hadn’t been since the War, since Revan had told them to destroy their beskar, for the clans to scatter, leaving his people broken, rudderless, and lost. He’d taken that life for granted. He was left with nothing to show for it except for nasty scars and memories that plagued him during the daytime as well as the night.
Nightmares were a normal occurrence in his life. Any Mandalorian who’d lived as long as he had, that had as many scars and fought as many battles that marked him as a warrior, would have the same. It was expected, welcome even. It meant he lived a life honoring Mandalore, honoring the oaths he swore as a Mandalorian. Even if he wouldn’t ever be able to live like he once had.
None of that mattered when he closed his eyes at night, the fires of war burning behind his eyelids, even when battle rage and adrenaline jolted him back to reality with an intensity that left his heart hammering against his ribs.
The fight against the dark Jedi on Tatooine had reawoken the nightmares, keeping him from rest. But that wasn’t the only thing haunting him in the dim corridors of the Ebon Hawk.
Jagi.
No matter how much he tried to deny it, he’d failed Jagi. And now all that was left of his former comrade was a body burned to ash amongst the sandy desert.
With a grunt, he reached for his repeater, sliding it closer to inspect. The Tatooine dust had corroded part of the trigger mechanism, the barrel stained with the blood of the Krayt Dragon. It was going to take a lot of work to clean, repair, and test before they arrived at their final destination: Korriban.
Unscrewing the trigger guard from the rest of the weapon, he carefully lifted the piece and set it on the workbench, grabbing a rag and some weapon cleaning solution, taking care not to damage any of the wiring as he wiped away the grime and sand from the trigger mechanism. It was meticulous, irritating work, but it gave him a chance to reflect in the quiet. Time that he didn’t often get with the Sith dogging their heels at every turn.
Setting the rag against the bench, he lifted the rifle and turned it in the overhead light, trying to peer inside to be certain he’d cleaned it free of all dust. With a satisfied grunt, he set it against the table once more when the sound of footsteps signaled the approach of another nighttime ghost.
The door hissed open before Onasi strolled in, pausing on the threshold at the sight of Canderous in the cargo bay, the pilot’s hand hovering in the air as if he regretted following the allure of whatever had pulled him into the room in the first place. “I didn’t realize there was anyone in here.”
Canderous raised an eyebrow, but said nothing, leaning back in his chair, arms crossed over his broad chest, cigarra hanging out of his mouth as the smoke rose in swirls to the ceiling. His gaze trailed from the top of Carth’s head to his feet, taking in every detail of the man that their leader had taken to his bed over the last few weeks. The strands of hair that stuck up at weird angles from Carth running his hands through it, tired brown eyes that peered out of a worn face, age catching up to the pilot more in the last couple months than it had his entire life. Canderous saw the dark circles, the lines around his eyes, the pallor of his skin. He wasn’t sleeping well, that much was obvious, and it wasn’t from nightly activities either.
Carth stood there awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck with a hand. “I’ll leave you to it then.”
Biting the cigarra between his teeth, Canderous repressed the eye roll before kicking out the chair across from him. It slid across the floor with a screech in the quiet room, drawing Carth’s eyes back to him. “Sit down, Onasi.”
The shock on the pilot’s face might’ve made him laugh if he was inclined to, but as it was, he was a busy man who really shouldn’t be socializing with the Republic poster boy. But Onasi wasn’t the worst of the Pubs he’d met and maybe he could find common ground with him… they were both attracted to the leader of their merry little band. Vane was a powerful man who commanded attention, loyalty, and trust. There was no one better for Canderous to bed.
If Carth respected and desired Vane as much as he did, maybe there was something there that could be stoked between them as well.
Onasi approached the table with hesitation, eyes watching Canderous as if he didn’t completely trust him. He wouldn’t hold it against him, their people had tried to wipe each other out.
“I don’t bite. Unless you ask me to.” The corner of his mouth pulled up and Carth shook his head, huffed out a breath and plopped into the chair. “There. Was that so hard?”
Carth met his eyes, mouth twitching with a smile. “How does he put up with you? You’re insufferable.”
“A bastard, for sure.” He agreed, pulling his cigarra from his mouth to blow the smoke from his mouth. White tendrils curled between them, dancing in circles before disappearing into nothing. Canderous glanced at the dark skin beneath Carth’s eyes. “You should be sleeping. Can’t have you dropping your blaster or flying us into a black hole.”
Carth rolled his eyes, mimicking Canderous’s posture and folding his arms over his chest. “That’s unlikely to happen.”
“You say that until it does. Then who’s left alive to deal with your fuck up? Probably me.” Canderous took another puff, before returning to the work he’d abandoned when Carth entered. “I’m always cleaning up Republic messes.”
Carth didn’t respond to his goading, instead glancing at the dented armor that sat in front of him. “We’ve all been through hell, huh?”
“Some of us are still going through it.”
Jagi’s angry face flashed across his thoughts. Canderous shoved it away where it belonged: in the dark recesses of his mind.
Carth’s jaw tensed, but the smallest of nods came from him in response. “Telos, Malachor… Taris. Too much death, too much suffering. When does it end?”
Canderous sighed, fingers buried in the wiring of his repeater. “It doesn’t.”
Carth didn’t say anything, only stared at the armor in front of him, memorizing the blaster burns and dents, close calls, every one of them. Canderous had many brushes with death over his long years, but he was a man well acquainted with war, with destruction. One of many things that he had in common with Vane… and with Onasi.
It was still difficult to come to terms with that fact. That a Mandalorian could have so much in common with a Jedi… with a Republic soldier. They might have been on opposite sides during the war, but it didn’t stop the truth. They were all bloodied to the bone, haunted by horrors that most of the galaxy couldn’t even begin to fathom. And he liked it that way. Canderous wasn’t a particularly gentle or sentimental person, but he could handle the pain, the nightmares, the blood as he washed it away after each battle.
He’d bear that weight willingly and keep moving forward, slightly more scarred each time.
“I know you’re right.” Carth finally said, glancing up to meet his gaze, brown eyes hiding a mind full of the same dark memories: the same horrors plagued him, the same scars marked his soul. Canderous knew that look better than anyone. It met him every time he glanced into a mirror. Onasi sighed, running his hands through his hair. “But I don’t want you to be.”
“What you want matters little.”
Harsh, maybe, but it was true and Canderous wasn’t a liar.
Carth’s shoulders tensed at the words, but he betrayed not a single thought on his face. “I know that too.”
“Then why even talk about it?”
Carth sighed again, dropping his face into his hands and the walls, the facade, crumbled away to reveal the fear beneath. “If I don’t talk about it, I’ll obsess about it. All of it. Telos and Taris and everything during the Mandalorian Wars. To know that it’s someone I trusted that leads Malak’s fleet. To know that despite everything I’ve been through, that the Republic has suffered, none of it mattered. Because people are still suffering.”
Canderous huffed, putting out his cigarra against the metal table. The pungent scent of the tabac filled the air, one last sputter of life before the flame extinguished. His eyes traced the shape of the soot mark on the metal, attempting to collect his thoughts. In the end, he went with the simplest truth. One that even Carth wouldn’t be able to deny. “Suffering is the result of weakness.”
Carth’s eyebrows came together and his face scrunched in frustration. Banging his fist on the table, the deconstructed rifle shifted slightly, but Canderous ignored it, eyes fixed on the angry man across from him. “That’s bullshit! And you know it.”
“That so?” Canderous leaned forward, moving the pieces of his rifles away to rest his arms on the table, hands clasped in front of him.
“I know Mandalorians live to destroy everything they touch, but in the Republic, we actually care about life. About making communities safe.” Carth pushed away from the table, chair tipping over in his haste to move. His hands were clenched into fists at his sides, shoulders shaking with anger as he finally let it boil over. “These people matter to me, even if they don’t to you.”
Canderous bared his teeth in a growl, but didn’t bother to stand. His presence spoke for itself. “You have no idea what the kark you’re talking about.”
“I was there when the Mandalorians bombarded Serroco!” Carth shouted, spinning on him as if he was the responsible party for the planet’s destruction. “How can you be okay with that?”
“It was war, Onasi.” Canderous brushed a hand over his forehead, trying to prevent a headache from forming from the shouting. “And don’t act like your precious Republic wasn’t doing the same thing in the name of liberation.”
“I can’t believe how casual you are about murder.” Carth turned away, still seething if his form was anything to go by.
Sighing, Canderous rested against the back of his chair, knowing this wasn’t the only thing that Carth was upset about. The betrayal of his former commander was clearly still at the forefront of his mind. “All this time fighting against the clans and you still haven’t learned anything about your enemy.”
“We aren’t enemies, Canderous.” Carth deflated slightly, as if he realized what he was saying. The past was still haunting the pilot, that much was obvious, but at least he was fighting it. The thirst for revenge he’d started their quest with was fizzling out slowly, much thanks to the tender affection he and Vane held for one another.
A tenderness that was foreign to a man like Canderous.
But then again, Vane didn’t end up in his bed for the affection.
“What do you want, Onasi? To be closer?” Canderous asked, voice gravely as he leaned forward, watching as Carth’s cheeks flushed slightly.
“I…” He cleared his throat, sinking back into the chair as if defeated. “I want you to know that you don’t have to blame yourself for what happened to Jagi. Or on Althir. I think about Serroco every day, but it wasn’t my fault it happened. Yes, it was war, but sometimes, reality doesn’t matter when you feel like you could’ve changed history. Saved more people, made better decisions.”
“I don’t want to talk sentimentality with you, Republic. Or morality. Things like that don’t matter. What matters is what you did at the time and how you move forward. And the honor with which you served.”
Carth sighed, pinching his nose in irritation. “Fine. But at least listen to what I’m saying to you . I’ve seen the things that war does to a man. Especially ones that survive it. I am one of those men.”
“Jagi isn’t the first man I’ve seen crack under the pressure.” Canderous told him, watching as Carth flinched at what he was saying. “But he’s the first that I’ve directly affected like that. Or that I know of. It’s…”
“Painful?”
“I don’t know.” Canderous grunted at the pain in his back from sitting for so long. There was no way he was sleeping after this. “I’ve never dealt with survivor’s guilt. I’ve never felt it before. I’m not sure what any of this means. For me or for the future of the Mandalorians.”
“At least you have a future.” Carth replied, watching him with soft dark eyes that Canderous swore held some sort of affection before it disappeared. “Not many do anymore.”
“Jagi included.” He muttered, but Onasi spoke the truth. The Mandalorian clans were scattered, lost to the galaxy, but Canderous was alive, a bit scarred and weathered, but alive nonetheless. Maybe it was time he started living. “I have a lot to think about, but… I appreciate the talk, Onasi.”
Carth fought a smile, but his lips still twitched. “Don’t tell Vane that we got along for longer than a minute. His head will explode.”
Canderous snorted, but the image was enough to make him smile slightly. Carth stood, leaving him to his weapon repair, but paused on the way out of the room, glancing back at him. “You're not alone here. I want you to know that.”
Before he could respond, Carth was gone, the room a little darker for his leaving. Eyes on the disassembled repeater, Canderous let out a sharp breath, but for the first time since returning from Tatooine, his soul felt lighter.
