Enough postponing, here's my attempt at making something comprehensive on one of the most varied creatures in Lithuanian folklore: laumės (Art credits: Marcė Katiliūtė)
Tumblr media
Basically, laumės are groups of humanoid women, connected with water, birch, night and the act of weaving. Primarily considered bridges between humans and gods, they inhabit forests while having the ability to summon rain and weave rainbows. They interact with people by bathing in saunas after everyone is gone. Appeased laumės are said to leave textiles as a reward for a clean, warm sauna or any offerings made to them. Their day is Thursday, just like Perkūnas' and they're most active during the night.
Now onto complicated stuff: there are many variations when it comes to laumės’ appearance. Age ranges from young to old, some are said to have metal nails, some have chicken feet and feathered bodies hiding under white clothes which let them interact with humans. The earliest depiction of laumės was in the form of a dove, the bird of Goddess Laumė, sometimes as goat-headed or horned women, bears, cats. They’re either depicted as incredibly alluring and sexual or grotesque and terrifying. Their views towards humans also change: they can be only dangerous to men, sometimes they’re most dangerous to babies, which they exchange for bundles of wheat in the crib, the bundles growing into laumiukai (similar to fae changelings) overnight. It is unclear what they do to the stolen babies. In some tales they're shown as very ruthless, uncaring of their safety, in others they're maternal, stealing out of desire for motherhood and accidentally killing the babies out of love. Sometimes they can be helpful to weavers, however this is achieved only after guessing a riddle or obeying a specific rule, on Thursdays. Even then, should a laumė run out of material, she'll weave in hair or intestines of the woman whose work she's finishing.
Overall, laumės can be called morally grey: they're wonderful seamstresses who gift their handiwork to humans, but at the same time deadly, being able to thinly slice and weave an entire person as if they were wool.
SPECULATION: Their origin is quite interesting. I think that there may be a tie between them and the matriachal goddess Laumė (shown below), who, after having a child with a human man, was "banished" to Earth by the new patriarchal gods but this is JUST my opinion that is not based off of any source and moreso speculative connections between Laumė and laumės
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Laumės are associated with mistletoe and similar parasitic plants seen on birch trees, from which they like to swing. Some sources claim that the so-called “laumė broom” can banish laumiukai from a home when they're beaten with it. Their ties with bodies of water, by which they dance and summon rain and new moon are also apparent, as well as their specific fear of flax. Though beings with many variations, they are the most famous characters in Lithuanian folklore along with aitvarai.

"Waiting for Brother" (Rambles + Lineart under cut)
Here are Leonard's younger brothers~ From left to right, Laum, Riversal, and Lukhege :3 im not the best with rendering textured backgrounds or specialised lighting so it's a bit shoddy, but i tried my best!!! honest, i could give no less for these precious babies....... QwQ Honestly, huge thanks to everyone who participated in the poll!!! i really wasn't expecting it to gain much traction when i initially posted it, much less that these three would win to such a margin (though im definitely not complaining!!! i adore them to DEATH lmao) so i'll likely-definitely rehash the poll so i can draw some more underrated faves till i've got them all :3 just in case this version takes away from the concept here's the lineart backup!!

Put On Your Raincoats | Dawna of the Dead (Conroy, 2008)
Tumblr media
There is definitely a cap on how good a 2000s digitally shot porno can look, but this one looks quite a bit nicer than I expected. The grindhouse filter is a lot more textured and convincing than the one in The Texas Vibrator Massacre, and more than a few frames could be mistaken for shots from an actual old low budget horror movie, albeit one that’s woefully underlit. And the soundtrack is quite strong as well, with a synth-heavy pseudo-retro vibe, where certain tracks sound like Fabio Frizzi and at least one sounds like some of the music from the trailer for Ulli Lommel’s The Boogeyman. And the zombies look like the guy from the Hell of the Living Dead poster, so the movie gets a few more points for that too, although eagle-eyed viewers will notice that the zombie makeup does not cover their members and ends abruptly at the base of the shaft. I guess it might be uncomfortable for their partners to get makeup in their privates, but for the sake of art I would appreciated some blending. The zombie guttural groan sounds are well done, and there’s even some gore punctuating the proceedings.
This starts with a woman being driven by her friend so she can go masturbate on the grave of her boyfriend, which represents some sort of highpoint of onscreen female friendship. The characters are not all that well fleshed out, although the friend is played by Aiden Starr, who brings a certain amount of charisma to the role and sells the chemistry between them handily. In fact, you could say that Starr has so much charisma that it comes through even in the span of any handful of minutes sampled from her vast filmography. If anyone asks why I’ve seen a non-zero amount of her work, I’m going with that.
After that setup, we get pretty quickly to the zombies, although this is not so much the parody of Dawn of the Dead that the title might suggest than a general riff on the zombie concept. There’s even elements of the supernatural, including one scene influenced by J-horror where a guy gets double-teamed by a pair of onryo babes. Of course they turn out to be zombie babes, but the editing in the scene is J-horror-tinged. This is a real melting pot of influences, is what I’m saying.
Given the short runtime, there isn’t room for much of a story, but that gives the proceedings an interesting ritualistic quality. Much of the action takes place on the same grave against a background of impenetrable darkness, scene after scene of the undead and their victims fucking dutifully until the predetermined horrific conclusions. The lack of arc means that the proceedings play on the level of the zombies, doomed to this existence, repeating half-remembered reflexes from when they were alive while the movie drones on.
So yeah, I enjoyed this more than I expected. If any of this sounds appealing to you, I’d say it’s worth a look.

jau rudenėja
kaip gražiai šoka medžiai
Perkūno užduotam ritmui,
jo aidintiems karinio būgno garsams,
kol Saulė bergždžiai bando atsiimti dieną.
jau rudenėja,
oras aštresnis ir gaivesnis,
Vėlinas po mažėle gesina savo laužus
prie kurių linksmindavosi su Gabija.
Žemyna ruošiasi miegoti -
jau tuoj jos numylėti žali žemės lopinėliai
nusidažys kraujo ir aukso spalvomis,
taip atsiduodami žiemos Ladai.
o tada po ledo karalystę,
vaikščios vilkės ir lietuviai:
karaliaus jie net vienatvėje,
laiką stingdinančio sniego platybėse.
ir Vėjas ir Lietus jau traukiasi
nors Perkūnas dar būgnyja -
karo nebus,- taip jie byloja,
įskridus Deivei Paukštei į namus.

SQUISH, SQUISH for the four brothers + the faerie (I doubt it'll really appreciate it, but why not? Lmao)
Laum:
She squishes the small boys cheeks with a warm smile and nuzzles their noses together. "10/10."
Tumblr media
Riv:
She squishes her friend's cheeks with a grin before inevitably pinching them, "Hmm..I guess I'll give you a 8." Her grins is mischievous.
Tumblr media
Leonard:
She pats the man's cheek with a tiny smile. "Could be softer, but extra point for strong jaw. 6!"
Tumblr media
Faerie:
She pinches the little things cheek, attempting not to hurt it...too badly. "1. Plus it tries to bite me."
Tumblr media
Lukhege:
She cups the boys cheeks so softly and presses into his cheek with adoration. A giggle as the way his face deforms from her actions. "20/10." As she leans in and kisses that very cheek. "Perfect for kissing too."
She hides her face after such an act but she's still smiling.

Sneak peek at scene from chapter 10
i think i'm nearing the end guys. Will I be able to finish it tomorrow? We'll see.
There was a short pause before he asked another question. “…Are you enjoying yourself?”
“Of course I am,” you said in surprise, for he sounded genuinely troubled. “Why do you ask?”
“It is just that…” Neuvillette trailed off, as though searching for the right words. “I couldn’t help but notice that you had a rather grave expression on your face when you were chatting with Serene.”
He could see your expression from all the way over here? You looked at the other side of the village, where the bench you had been sitting. His eyesight must be incredible.
“Oh, there’s nothing to worry about,” you said airily. “We were just chatting. And that’s how my face always looks. But why were you looking over at us, anyways, when you have all these charming young ladies around you?”
One of the Melusines in front of you giggled and turned around. “That’s because he was feeling lonely without you, Madame!” she chirped.
“Yeah, that’s why he keeps looking in your direction!” Another Melusine chimed in.
“Is that true, Monsieur Neuvillette?” you looked back at him. His face was kept carefully smooth and expressionless, but you could see spots of color in his cheeks. “Can you really not bear a single minute away from me?”
“I…” Neuvillette looked as though he wanted to take off and leave right there and then. But he ended up being saved from having to come up with an answer by Laume.

Camille Bombois (1883 – 1970) was a French naïve painter especially noted for paintings of circus scenes.
Bombois was born in Venarey-les-Laumes in the Côte-d'Or, in humble circumstances. His childhood was spent living on a barge and attending a local school until the age of twelve, when he became a farm worker. During his free time he drew and competed in wrestling competitions at local fairs. He became a champion local wrestler before joining a traveling circus as a strongman and wrestler.
In 1907, Bombois fulfilled his dream of moving to Paris, where he married and worked as a railway laborer, eventually finding a night job at a newspaper printing plant handling heavy newsprint rolls. Despite the exhausting nature of his job he painted from dawn to dusk, sleeping little. He showed his paintings in sidewalk exhibitions, but his earliest paintings, revealing the influence of the old masters in their subdued use of color, attracted few buyers.
1914 marked the beginning of four-and-a-half years of military service in World War I. Bombois spent much of it on the front line, earning three decorations for bravery. Upon his return home, encouraged that his wife had succeeded in selling a number of his paintings in his absence, he resumed his routine of night labor and daytime painting. In 1922, his sidewalk displays in Montmartre began attracting the attention of collectors. The art dealer Wilhelm Uhde "discovered" him in 1924, and exhibited Bombois' work in the Galeries des Quatre Chemins in 1927.[1] In 1937, his works were shown in the exhibition "Maîtres populaires de la réalité" in Paris. His first solo show was in 1944 at the Galerie Pétridès. Critics compared Bombois' work to that of Henri Rousseau, which it resembled in its naïve drawing, crisp delineation of form, and attention to detail, although Bombois was less of a fantasist than Rousseau.
The paintings of his maturity are bold in color, featuring strong contrasts of black, bright reds, blues and electric pinks. Drawing from his own experiences, he often painted circus performers and landscapes with fishermen. His paintings of women are emphatic in their carnality, and his landscapes are notable in their careful attention to space, and to the effects of reflected light on water. Bombois' works are on view in many public collections, notably the Musée Maillol in Paris.
In 2023, Bavarian town of Passau in Germany restituted a painting by Bombois that had been looted from Jewish collector Marcel Joseph Monteux, who was murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau on August 15, 1944.
