A Practical Guide to Customizing TFT LCD Displays for Embedded Projects
When designing an embedded system, picking the right display module is more than a technical choice — it directly shapes how users interact with your product.
From medical devices and HMIs to industrial controllers and smart panels, standard TFT LCD modules may not always be enough. That’s where custom displays come in — offering flexibility in electrical interface, mechanical layout, and visual performance.
This guide covers the five key areas you should consider when customizing a TFT LCD for your embedded project.
1. FPC Layout and Pin Mapping
The Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) connects your LCD module to the mainboard, and in custom designs, this interface is often the first thing to change.
Ask yourself:
Do you need a uniquely shaped or angled FPC to fit inside your housing?
Are there ICs, resistors, or other components on the backlight or CTP that require mechanical clearance?
Is your SBC’s connector pinout compatible with the LCD’s FPC layout?
A mismatch here can lead to signal errors, mechanical stress, or even damage to components.
2. Backlight Brightness and Color Temperature
Not all embedded devices live under the same lighting.
If your product is used outdoors or in industrial lighting, consider high-brightness backlights (≥800 nits). For environments where aesthetics and color warmth matter (like smart mirrors or indoor kiosks), choose the right LED color temperature:
3000K (Warm White): Soft, suitable for medical or ambient lighting
5000K (Neutral White): Balanced tone, accurate colors
6500K+ (Cool White): Sharper, more industrial feel
A poorly lit display can make a great device feel underwhelming.
3. Touch Panel Shape and Bonding Options
If your display includes a touch interface, customizing the Capacitive Touch Panel (CTP) is critical.
Typical customizations include:
Round corners, logo cutouts, button holes
Bonding methods:
Optical bonding: Improves visibility, reduces reflections, stronger seal
Air bonding: More affordable and easier to assemble
The bonding method directly impacts touch accuracy, display clarity, and long-term reliability.
4. Surface Treatments: AG, AR, and AF
For devices exposed to bright light or frequent finger contact, display surface treatments make a noticeable difference.
AG (Anti-Glare): Scatters reflected light, improving readability
AR (Anti-Reflection): Enhances contrast in sunlight or strong lighting
AF (Anti-Fingerprint): Reduces smudges, improves touch feel
Combining AG+AF is a common choice for public-facing touchscreen displays.

Modular Oriented Programming and DevOps
The idea is as follows.
If you were an application developer, you would go into a market place and shop for parts. For example (see figure above). You would get some buttons, an LCD display, a back panel and a control circuit. Then you would wire the components together to create an application. Even thou you would be a software developer you would not need to do any programming what so ever. For example the calculator can be put together with a simple bash script or even simpler. An XML file.
This is possible with Modular Oriented Programming. It would change DevOps for software developers to operate similar to the automobile industry. The engine is made in one country. The tires in another. The dashboards and bumpers in another and so on. All the automobile manufacturers really focus on is the outter body. The chassis that glues all the parts together.
Software DevOps would have three distinct industries:
1. - Module developer focused on a specific situation or problem.
2. - Application developer who brings together different modules and creates an application
3. - The technician who is akin to the auto mechanic. This guy would maintain and tweak the application by adding and removing modules. Rewiring the app in a sense.

so the thing I want is some kind of display module can fill at least most if not all of a 30 x 30 mm window while still fitting within the roughly 40 x 37 mm space, all while preferably being relatively simple to drive in terms of both power and data - bonus points for some kind of retro aesthetic like a monochrome dot matrix LCD but I'll take what I can get at this point.
It's being a bother because most displays seem to be rectangular rather than square, and also have their PCB stick out a fair bit beyond the actual display area. Comically, many are also at least Hi-Color displays which take more processing to drive due to a greater amount of data needing to be pushed compared to a simple single colour where every pixel is either on or off.
All I really need to display is like battery status, signal strength, and optionally the ability to switch between found devices and/or networks...

some cam questions: what does cam think of puns? does cam have a strong preference for a specific display technology? (e.g. does he hate lcd and prefer crt or oled?) did cam ever return to streaming after (presumably) escaping? if so, did he use the old account or start fresh? also, if he was vtubing, what was his model? robot catgirl? would he find it degrading if someone, upon narrowly escaping involuntarily donating their own skin to his escape attempt, came back with one of those human sized teddy bears for him to use instead? or would he find it more practical (doesn't decay as fast) or perhaps demand they come back with a cat version? or is the revenge aspect too important to accept substitutes? how bad of an idea would it be to allow Customer Assistance Machine (CAM) access to Computer Aided Machining (CAM) tools like a CNC mill and 3d printer (near the end of the 30 year solitary arc)? what would he make first? what if you only gave him a dinky uncalibrated PLA printer and only 2 meters of filament? would he be able to print something to help him escape or would he try to but fail and get mad?
first of all: thank you so much for sending these. so many questions. i will answer in order :D (readmore here so my lovely followers dont have to scroll past my yapfest)
what does cam think of puns? hmm... i think it likes them but only if it's making them. CAM is quite self absorbed (if this was not obvious enough by now i need to work harder) and gets easily annoyed if someone else makes a joke he doesn't think is funny. does cam have a strong preference for a specific display technology? (e.g. does he hate lcd and prefer crt or oled?) not really! CAM really only tends to have issues with tech they're put into if it has a lack of motor control. it really hates not being able to move. i imagine they would have issues if there was a lack of display as well but i don't think they prefer any type of display over the other. did cam ever return to streaming after (presumably) escaping? i think so! CAM likes streaming and they're very good at it. if so, did he use the old account or start fresh? starting fresh is the more reasonable option but i am in love with the idea that this fictional streaming website stays active 30 years into the future, so the old account i think also, if he was vtubing, what was his model? robot catgirl? of course. her name is Cami by the way would he find it degrading if someone, upon narrowly escaping involuntarily donating their own skin to his escape attempt, came back with one of those human sized teddy bears for him to use instead? or would he find it more practical (doesn't decay as fast) or perhaps demand they come back with a cat version? or is the revenge aspect too important to accept substitutes? oh definitely. ideally, CAM prefers any sort of robot body over a human one and a plush toy just feels patronizing. i think the revenge aspect isn't super important apart from any human who had a part in them getting put away, but CAM doesn't trust any human to build them a robot body that they're satisfied with. it's why they want the skin-suit thing, as more of a temporary vessel to build a better robot body! how bad of an idea would it be to allow Customer Assistance Machine (it's actually Customer Assistance Module! :P) (CAM) access to Computer Aided Machining (CAM) tools like a CNC mill and 3d printer (near the end of the 30 year solitary arc)? oh i don't think it would be that bad actually. he's more worried about doing his own thing so i dont think it would be used for that malicious of purposes! mostly. what would he make first? im not sure actually! maybe a more mobile shell to fit some wires into (re: the skin-suit thing) to move around in and do the aforementioned building a better body. probably a way to get out of their room if they havent done that yet in this hypothetical. frankly a lot of their plans require more delicate tech what if you only gave him a dinky uncalibrated PLA printer and only 2 meters of filament? would he be able to print something to help him escape or would he try to but fail and get mad? oh that would absolutely not work lol. i think they would try SO hard to get it to work and get mad when it doesnt. 2 meters of filament is absolutely not enough to get through a strongly sealed door even when youre an AI thats been self-developing for 30 years
