Jagna's crown in The Peasants (2023)

To begin with, I really liked this film in many, many aspects, so this is by no means hate on it.

Buuut if there's one tiny thing that they could've done better... is to double down on the folk stuff. What I mainly mean is Jagna's crown. It's like a nod towards tradition but... Her dress is very city-like imo, white, embroidered with what seems sparkly (meaning expensive) threads. Meanwhile, the crown is small and made of lace, peacock feathers, blueberries??, plants I don't recognise. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty and huge respect to the maker. In the og book, regarding the crown, we read: "Her hair, braided over her forehead, bore above it a rich pile of gold spangles, and peacock’s eyes, and sprigs of rosemary. Therefrom, down to her nape and shoulders, fell long ribbons of every hue;" (translation by Michael Dziewicki). It was also described as tall but I guess it was lost in translation.

Anyway, this film is not super historically accurate (there's no way they would let Jagna have her hair down, not braided at all) but they did try. Overall, it's a nice introduction to the culture and an invitation to explore more on your own.

Around two weeks ago I had a chance to watch movie Chłopi hitch was based on a timeless literary masterpiece that delves deep into the lives of rural peasants in 19th-century Poland. Władysław Reymont's epic novel is a rich tapestry of vivid characters , complex relationships, and the unending struggle for survival in a harsh and unforgiving natural environment.

The story is set in the fictional village of Lipce and is divided into four parts, each corresponding to a season: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Reymont's portrayal of the changing seasons not only serves as a backdrop but also acts as a metaphor for the cyclical nature of life in the countryside.

The characters in "Chłopi" are incredibly well-drawn and represent a cross-section of rural society. We meet Hanka, the young bride, and her husband, Jagna, a strong-willed and resilient woman, as well as other villagers who play essential roles in the unfolding drama. Through these characters, Reymont explores themes of love, tradition, family, and the relentless struggle against poverty and the natural elements.

moreover this movie perfectly fits in the problems of today’s society highlights feminism, patriarchal society and alcoholism. In my opinion this is still masterpiece we can learn from. What is also worth noticing if the form in which the film was delivered, the painting techniques we most popular in the Młoda Polska period. Some of them reanimated for example Jacek Malczewski paintings. Thanks to using this techniques the movie became less drastic for the viewer. It made it also more interesting and encouraged the audience to investigate some more about the time period. In my opinion it is the best Polish movieI have seeen in years and I hope it will get and Oscar

@lightyaoigami FINALLY SOMEONES ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS. sorry for putting this as a rb but i exceeded the character limit in replies. edit: oh god i just finished typing it out and it got wayy out of hand so im putting the whole thing under the cut. tldr the movie i meant is called chłopi/the peasants, it's great, watch it.

im talking abt chłopi (eng title is the peastants) which is a polish production created in the same technique as loving vincent (animation consisting on hand painted oil paintings. the whole thing is HAND PAINTED.) adapting a nobel prize (!!) winning novel of the same title. other than being a stunning audiovisual experience (other than the animational it also has an incredible soundtrack) it offers great storytelling as well (cause duh. nobel prize novel adaptation). and yes its feminist messaging is imo more complex and engaging than barbie's.

ok so to get into what the movie is about: set in lipce, a village in late 19th century poland, it follows a young woman named jagna and her struggles relating the marriage shes been forced into as well as her affair with her husbands son (it sounds EXTREMELY cheap when i write it out like ohh shes fucking her husbands son but i promise it really doesnt come off this way... like the two are involved before she gets married and its part of the reason she resists the arrangement and its not like just a shocking drama element for the sake of the shock). but a lot of it is really abt the sort of "local politics" of the village and who gets to have the power within this community. and its all narratively framed as like a sort of cycle of life of the village and its residents across the four seasons of the year because of how the lives of all these people are intertwined with those cycles in nature. uhmm yeah. its great! trust me!

the reason why im talking abt this film so much is u have to understand - in poland it was HUGE. like nearly everyone i know has seen it and the general response has been overwhelmingly possitive. like even people who didnt like it respect it in a way yknow? and its been hyped up as like the polish candidate for oscars SO MUCH. which is why a lot of ppl (including me obv!) are disappointed.

anyway i said in in various ways like 5 times by now within this whole uhh, ramble, but i strongly encourage everyone who reads this and feels intrigued to watch it. i am sure there is an eng sub version available somewhere online cause the film first premiered at like an international festival in toronto (i think?). so yeah! check it out 👍
