i hope the iconic and wonderful Kirk/Spock OGs who are still with us are hearing about shows like Heartstopper and OFMD and understand that we owe this to them. Thousands of people are seeing themselves in characters like Nick and Charlie and it is in no small part because of what those women (I say, loosely) did for us in the 60s. They saw love where it was not intended to be—they FOUND love—and created a culture of people willing to do the same, willing to find those unintentional romances, until enough people wanted a proper queer romance that one of them ended up in a writers room. Until many of them did! I do not honestly believe we would have characters like Willow (BTVS) or Jack Harkness or Villanelle if it was not for K/S shippers 60 years ago. Star Trek paved the way for modern fandom and I am eternally grateful to those legends who were part of the movement—who accepted the Premise. LLAP, Spirk Housewives 💙💛

Review of BlueBrixx’s U.S.S. Rio Grande

The U.S.S. Rio Grande was one of the three original Danube-class runabouts assigned to Deep Space 9.  It was the only runabout of the original trio to survive the full run of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series.  Over the course of the series, the Rio Grande discovered the Bajoran Wormhole (“Emissary”), crossed over into the Mirror Universe (“Crossover”), carried a long-lost Klingon artifact (“The Sword of Kahless”), retrieved the Orb of the Emissary (“Shadows and Symbols”), and even singlehandedly destroyed a Jem’Hadar attack ship (“Treachery, Faith, and the Great River”)!  A vessel with such an illustrious career deserves a tremendous tribute, and BlueBrixx fittingly has made sure that its Rio Grande model lives up to the distinguished runabout.   

As with the Galileo shuttle, the most striking initial impression is just how closely this brick-built model resembles the onscreen Rio Grande, both in its exterior and interior.  BlueBrixx has recreated just about everything that was depicted onscreen, even the rear sleeping and dining compartment (complete with a replicator!) that was only seen in one TNG episode (“Timescape”).  Most impressively, the designers have also included things that were never seen onscreen, such as the specialized mission modules in the midsection and engine components in the pylons. 

The build experience is best described as similar to running a marathon.  Proper planning and pacing is a must.  The runabout may look sleek and compact when finished, but this over-3,000-piece set is a beast and more than likely will take a couple of days to complete.  I wouldn’t consider it a set for beginners, and it’s definitely not a set for kids.  The build is still a very rewarding experience, especially when you finally snap on the top cover and start to hear the DS9 theme play in your ears (or maybe that’s just me).  

Also, as the BlueBrixx product page shows, the set includes a rollbar that was seen on some runabouts.  I’ve opted not to include this rollbar on my model because, according to Ex Astris Scientia and Memory Alpha, the Rio Grande was only equipped with this module in just 1 out of its 40 appearances.  

One of the great things for me about brick sets is that you can inject your own creativity as you build.  For example, I wasn’t crazy about building the toilet that BlueBrixx included in the instructions, so I used some spare LEGO bricks and custom minifig accessories to create an armory in its place.  I think the armory turned out pretty well, and the LEGO bricks fit seamlessly in case anyone was wondering about compatibility.

Finally, with the Rio Grande model being in minifig scale, we naturally finish this review with obligatory photos of various LEGO minifigs checking out their new runabout:

My lasting impression of BlueBrixx now that I’ve built multiple sets of theirs:  What’s becoming increasingly evident to me is that these sets are clearly a labor of love developed by devoted Star Trek fans.  I’ve noticed many places where the designers could’ve opted for a simpler build but went with a more complex, intricate setup to match more closely the appearance of the onscreen ship as much as possible.  For someone who’s waited a long time for Star Trek themed LEGO sets, it’s such a joy to see Star Trek building brick sets being made by people who really care about paying homage to the franchise and doing their best to recreate some of its icons.  I look forward to many more BlueBrixx sets, especially more small craft in minifig scale!  LLAP

Introducing Herenya!

Herenya (@herenya-writes on tumblr and Herenya_writes on AO3) fell in love with Star Trek one summer and has loved it ever since, although their progress through actually watching all of the series has been slow. They love to write Jim/Spock fanfiction and have posted over 430,000 words of Spirk fanfic on AO3 spanning 22 works. When Herenya isn’t writing fanfiction or attending University classes, they can be found baking bread, writing poetry, playing video games and watching Star Trek.

Herenya will be writing a Spirk fanfic for the zine, which they say can be summarized by:

Spock gets himself injured on an away mission, and when he wakes up from surgery he decides that he and Jim have wasted enough time. He’s ready to commit to a relationship. Jim, however, is not so confident. The realities of his captaincy and their duties to Starfleet weigh heavy on his shoulders, and he feels like this risk might be one he just can’t take. His heart, of course, disagrees.

Oh wow, thank you so much for the art appreciation!! Also I am sorry if you sent this message weeks ago. I haven't been on Tumblr regularly for quite awhile, so I didn't see it until now. I'm afraid all of my trek art is on Deviant Art already, so that's the best place to find it. I have a few different injured-but-still-fighting Spock drawings there. A few of my art pieces are based on headcanons/fic ideas I had at the time but I have yet to write them (or to publish the little scraps anyway). Someday, maybe? It does mean a lot that you love my Spock art, it really does, so thank you again.

01/26 Star Trek TOS S2

wuaaaaaaaahhhhhhhHHH this episode was...haha I dunno as a anthro major I was having complex feelings of “oh yeah that contemporarily emerging cultural-analysis trend -- lesser biased but still fledging deconstruction about othering other cultures and the understandings of the so-called custom in the 60s” and “OMG SPIRK IS SO FCKING RIO I JUST CANT”

I also noticed that both in this episode when Spock farewells T’Pau, and in the film ST Beyond where Spock 2.0 confronts the Vulcan science ministry board or whatever authority, the LLAP thing is presented in an unorthodox way: Spock’s reaction to the LLAP blessing from T’Pau is “neither” as he won’t live long nor prosper bc he killed a starfleet officer and his friend. In Beyond, Spock 2.0 is basically saying fuck you when he used LLAP to the bureau. Ofc in these days, at least for me before I started watching TOS and maybe for many new or non-hardcore audience, LLAP has been the iconic slogan of ST. Yet, when I finally dived into the ST world and saw all these scenes where ppl say LLAP, I realized, oh, so it’s not that simple. The whole discourse of using LLAP isn’t just patent and unvarying. (Unlike the commensurably famous May the force be with you in SW, where the salutation’s meaning and the related scenes convey roughly similar wishes. Sure each scene has nuances, but it’s generally for blessings and good wishes.) Whereas in ST, at least in these two scenes, the audience are given a chance to rethink about the whole discourse about using LLAP. It might not be a huge thing. Could be inadvertent. The production team just threw out all these scenes unconsciously, and the scenes themselves indicating all potentials and possibilities. But it does seem one of many ways to make the show more intellectually savory. Again, I might be over-reading into this -- not sure if its scriptwriters’ original or major intention, but the fact that I am writing this paragraph and such just didn’t occur to me when I was watching SW is a simple piece of evidence that at least there is a difference to me. I will pay more attention to this in future episodes. If it’s nah, then so be it. lol

Small Update

Saddened to hear we lost another icon. She was such a big part of my childhood and helped fuel my love for sci-fi. I feel very fortunate to have met her...she was so sweet and so gracious. Nichelle Nichols inspired so many as Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek and also became an ambassador to NASA where her outreach to young people had such an impact on so many.
