Excerpt from this EcoWatch story:
After a devastating and hot 2023 summer, the Florida Keys coral restoration community made sure to be prepped for this year’s heat.
The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) is home to the largest coral barrier reef in the continental United States. In recent years, however, the Florida Reef Tract has suffered a “death of 1,000 cuts” – from water quality issues, pollution and disease. In 2023, a historic marine heat wave caused Florida’s corals to bleach weeks early.
Bleaching doesn’t always lead to coral death, but it can if conditions don’t improve quickly. “The coral is essentially starving until temperatures lower and symbionts recolonize” within coral tissues, a FKNMS Mission: Iconic Reefs (MIR) fact sheet said. The fact sheet was emailed to EcoWatch during the 2023 heat crisis. Additionally, heat stress makes corals more susceptible to diseases.
Last year, to beat the heat, coral restoration practitioners took emergency measures and moved what corals they could from their in situ nurseries to land-based holding tanks or deeper water. Many corals were lost, but many were saved, too. Each genetic strain is critical to restoration efforts, so each piece matters.
“Last year we were caught a bit by surprise and had to react quickly,” said MIR co-lead Jennifer Moore, “but we learned a great deal and are much more prepared this year.”
Florida Institute of Oceanography’s Keys Marine Laboratory (KML) served as a land-based triage station in 2023 for thousands of corals coming in bleached and hot from the scorched ocean. Hosted by the University of South Florida, the scientific research field station held over 5,000 corals in their 60 raceways during the heat crisis. In October and November, once temperatures had dropped and the corals had been checked for general wellness, most of these were returned to the ocean.
This year, as temperatures climb and alarms sound for corals around the world, KML has led the effort to prepare proactively within FKNMS. Using emergency funding, they bolstered the quality of their facilities with additional pop-up shade tents, backup pumps, circulation pumps, spare tank chillers, a new emergency generator, and remote alarms for their seawater systems. This will allow any corals that need to be housed to receive more consistent care at KML. The lab also purchased coral food and cleaning supplies in advance – to be prepared for anything.
KML also hosted a preparedness workshop on site to review seawater systems capabilities and limitations in emergent situations.

DP2 - Wandering Earth
Week 17:
This week, I developed a facade system that can be adapted to different spaces. The different degrees of curling of the panels respond to different directions of wind, rain and sun, resulting in the change in the interior ventilation, moisture content and light levels. I started working on the interior details of the laboratory including computer and seating units, structures supporting the existing facade that gets studies on, sprinkler and hail machine systems; and considered the primary and secondary structures supporting various components.
I need to keep working on the integrated design modules for the testing chamber, workshop space and garden for next week, and below are the details for different systems:
Roof: shape of the roof (e.g. jagged) and direction of its openings to allow light coming into the space. Rain water collecting systems with piping for flushing toilets
Floor: voids in the tiles for growing different species of plants; and delivering water collected by the facade system to the floor to nurture them. Angles of the the flooring systems and the different tiles on top to have different textures, and also how water is drained in the lab.
Facade: different scales, density and curvature of the panels adapted to different spaces considering different window openings. How it can affect the moisture content, heating and lighting levels inside. Double layered facade to have a void space for people to walk in, such as mediation room.
Lighting: having a combination of Industrial lights and spot lights in the lab, and task lights in the control room to make sure the latter space is darker for visibility
Heating and ventilation active systems: comparison of direct expansion system vs chiller, MVHR system vs air handling unit, considering air source heat pump and underfloor air con. Considering the position of the plant room.
I also need to simplify the plan by: having less stairs and more ramps, terraforming, organisation and shape of spaces to be clearer and more functionally efficient, using height labels for clearer communication.
Performative model: one 1:1 facade panel with functional solar and rain fuel technology. Considering bimetallic technology to make its curvature controllable by computer?

How does the NanoGenizer Work | Core Processing Unit
The NanoGenizer is a laboratory scale high-pressure homogenizer. There are two segments of the NanoGenizer, the power unit and the core processing unit. The core processing unit is where homogenization occurs.
Tumblr media
Before homogenization, the user places the sample in the inlet reservoir. Genizer offers a variety of options for your inlet reservoir. You may prefer a smaller or larger inlet reservoir depending upon the size of your sample. In addition to stainless steel, we offer plastic syringes and glass inlet reservoirs. Genizer also offers a variety of outlet reservoirs, where the sample goes after processing. You may prefer to use a jacketed glass cylinder, which you can connect to a laboratory chiller circulator for temperature controls. For small, valuable samples, the syringe option is best.
You can hook a Luer hose up to the outlet valve and place the other end in the inlet reservoir to circulate your sample through the core processing unit multiple times. Most samples need 5-10 passes through the diamond interaction chamber (DIXC) to be fully homogenized. Alternatively, you can place the Luer hose into any outlet receptacle in your lab.
The inlet and outlet valve ensures your sample travels the correct direction through the core processing unit. The inlet valve is a one-way valve that allows the sample to enter but not exit. The outlet valve is also a one-way valve and allows the sample to exit but not enter. The sample travels through the inlet valve, into the-high pressure cylinder, and out the outlet valve into the Diamond Interaction Chamber. The Diamond Interaction Chamber is where homogenization occurs. The chamber can be either Z-shaped or Y-shaped. In the Y-shaped diamond interaction chamber, the sample splits into two streams. Where the two streams collide, forces like high shear and cavitation homogenize the sample. In the z-type chamber, instead of the sample colliding with itself, it collides with the wall of the chamber. After homogenization, the particles are smaller and more uniform and liquids that would normally be immiscible can be mixed.
Tumblr media
Genizer's Diamond Interaction Chamber can come with a cooling option. Additionally, if you need more cooling properties, Genizer offers a real-time heat exchanger. This method of cooling is superior for thermally unstable samples. The NanoGenizer offers low minimum volume, low dead volume and temperature control options. Please click here for more information on the NanoGenizer.
