Soldiers Bathing

The sea at evening moves across the sand. Under a reddening sky I watch the freedom of a band Of soldiers who belong to me. Stripped bare For bathing in the sea, they shout and run in the warm air; Their flesh worn by the trade of war, revives And my mind towards the meaning of it strives.

All's pathos now. The body that was gross, Rank, ravenous, disgusting in the act or in repose, All fever, filth and sweat, its bestial strength And bestial decay, by pain and labour grows at length Fragile and luminous. 'Poor bare forked animal,' Conscious of his desires and needs and flesh that rise and fall, Stands in the soft air, tasting after toil The sweetness of his nakedness: letting the sea-waves coil Their frothy tongues about his feet, forgets His hatred of the war, its terrible pressure that begets A machinery of death and slavery, Each being a slave and making slaves of others: finds that he Remembers his old freedom in a game Mocking himself, and comically mimics fear and shame.

He plays with death and animality; And reading in the shadows of his pallid flesh, I see The idea of Michelangelo's cartoon Of soldiers bathing, breaking off before they were half done At some sortie of the enemy, an episode Of the Pisan wars with Florence. I remember how he showed Their muscular limbs that clamber from the water, And heads that turn across the shoulder, eager for the slaughter, Forgetful of their bodies that are bare, And hot to buckle on and use the weapons lying there. –- And I think too of the theme another found When, shadowing men's bodies on a sinister red ground Another Florentine, Pollaiuolo, Painted a naked battle: warriors, straddled, hacked the foe, Dug their bare toes into the ground and slew The brother-naked man who lay between their feet and drew His lips back from his teeth in a grimace.

They were Italians who knew war's sorrow and disgrace And showed the thing suspended, stripped: a theme Born out of the experience of war's horrible extreme Beneath a sky where even the air flows With lacrimae Christi. For that rage, that bitterness, those blows, That hatred of the slain, what could they be But indirectly or directly a commentary On the Crucifixion? And the picture burns With indignation and pity and despair by turns, Because it is the obverse of the scene Where Christ hangs murdered, stripped, upon the Cross. I mean, That is the explanation of its rage.

And we too have our bitterness and pity that engage Blood, spirit, in this war. But night begins, Night of the mind: who nowadays is conscious of our sins? Though every human deed concerns our blood, And even we must know, what nobody has understood, That some great love is over all we do, And that is what has driven us to this fury, for so few Can suffer all the terror of that love: The terror of that love has set us spinning in this groove Greased with our blood.

These dry themselves and dress, Combing their hair, forget the fear and shame of nakedness. Because to love is frightening we prefer The freedom of our crimes. Yet, as I drink the dusky air, I feel a strange delight that fills me full, Strange gratitude, as if evil itself were beautiful, And kiss the wound in thought, while in the west I watch a streak of red that might have issued from Christ's breast.

Tasting Campania

So….. Southern Italy Rises Again Campania is one of my favorite regions. Sorrento…the Amalfi coast…Ravello…terraces of vines and olive groves. Cuisine that showcases the bounty of forests and highlands along with abundance from the Mediterranean. This is why I’m looking forward to this Thursday’s Premium Wine Class. Tasting Campania’s wines is a journey through two millennia of viticultural history, a stroll in a living museum of ancient varietals… and each with a story to tell. We’ll be pouring a De Angelis Lacrima Christi beside Andrea Reale’s “Cardamone,” a blend of Piedirosso and Tintore. For comparison (or even better, contrast) two Aglianicos – the “Fidelis” from Cantine del Taburno and a “Naturalis Historia” by Mastroberardino. To top it off, among some offbeat surprises, one of Italy’s true cult wines, a Montevetrano from the hills near Salerno. If you can’t make Italy this summer, this la dolce vita staycation is an enological consolation.

In 2017 Reawacan was brought to life by Lacrima Christi former members Dan Krieger (vocals, guitar, bass) and Marco Gebert (drums). The name symbolizes their musical reunion. Su fase gustativa resulta sutil, con esa notable delicadeza que hemos destacado, llena de matices. Cierra con un final largo y que continúa la complejidad y la sutileza.

CAMPIPANO. Vino blanco de Cerdeña.

CAMPO DE BORJA. Zona vitivinícola situada al oeste de la provincia de Zaragoza, en España, en el valle del Ebro donde siembran Garnacha, Macabeo, Tempranillo, Mazuela y Cabernet Sauvignon.  Producen muy buenos vinos tintos jóvenes y de crianza. D.O. de vinos aragoneses, con un contenido de 13 a 18 grados de alcohol, elaborados en la zona media entre el valle del Ebro y las estribaciones del Sistema Ibérico, utilizando la variedad de uva “garnacha”. La crianza es por el sistema de añada en envases de madera de roble, con una duración mínima de un año.

CAMPO VIEJO. Vino blanco, rosado y tinto, de la denominación de origen Rioja que pertenece a la bodega Bodegas Campo Viejo, de la Bodega Savin S.A.

CAMPONAC. Vino tinto francés procedente de Graves.

CAN FEIXES. Productor de Cataluña, España, fundada en 1945. Se dedican a la elaboración de tres tipos de cava, brut, brut nature y vintage, todos con larga crianza, clasificados como grandes reservas y con más de dos años en rima. Se vende bajo la marca Huguet. Ficha 1.

CAN FEIXES. Productor de Cataluña, Penedès, España. La hacienda vitícola con el nombre de Jaume Feixes, su fundador, data del año 1400 y sus elaboraciones se iniciaron en 1690. Esta finca, de poder de la familia de José M.a Huget Masgrau, está situada en las tierras altas de Mediona y Cabrera. Sus viñedos se escalonan en terrazas, donde la composición del suelo y la climatología se unen para poder cultivar, idóneamente, las variedades de uva de la zona y conseguir vinos de muy buena calidad y finura. Produce vinos blancos, rosados, tintos y espumosos, que se venden con la marca Can Feixes. Ficha 2.

CAN RÀFOLS DELS CAUS. Productor de Cataluña, Penedès, España, fundada en 1980. La empresa sitúa su actividad en una antigua masía de Avinyonet del Penedès. Su propietario confía en el excelente comportamiento de algunas variedades de origen francés para la concepción de sus vinos, siempre cambiantes y al estilo y capricho de su autor. Su apuesta más fuerte recae en su vino de reserva, Caus Lubis; un tinto elaborado con la variedad merlot y lleno de sensaciones.

CANADÁ. Tiene aproximadamente 7,000 hectáreas sembradas que producen unos 400,000 hectolitros de vinos.  Su consumo por persona en un año es de 8,5 litros; las principales variedades que se siembran son Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc y Gamay. Canadá tiene algunas zonas con microclimas favorables para la producción de buenos vinos; las dos principales son la provincia de Ontario y la otra la Columbia Británica.

CANAIOLO. Uva menor cultivada en la región de Toscana, Italia del norte. El vino tinto a partir de estas uvas es frecuentemente utilizado para cortes con Sangiovese Grosso en parte de los Chianti entre una variedad de vinos tintos.

CANALS-CANALS. Vino cava de la denominación de origen vinos espumosos que pertenecen a la bodega Canals Olle, Miguel.

CANALS-MUNNÉ. Cava. Vino blanco español, producido con cepas Xarel-lo, Macabeo y Parellada en la región de Cataluña. Tiene como características un color: amarillo verdoso, aroma: limpio, fruta fresca, ahumados y notas cremosas, sabor: sabroso, amable, con final amargo, persistente, contenido alcohólico: 11,5 grados, maridaje: pescados y mariscos, paté, ahumados, aves, carnes, asados y charcutería.

CANARESE. Vino tinto italiano procedente del Piamonte.

CANASTILLA. Que sirve para sostener las botellas de vino en posición casi horizontal y ayuda al escanciar que los sedimentos no se agiten. Estéticamente lucen muy bien en la mesa. Ficha 1.

CANASTILLA. Cesta de mimbre, o de otros materiales, utilizada para mantener una botella en posición acostada para transportar y servir con el máximo cuidado el vino evitando remover los sedimentos. Ficha 2.
