Cultural Festivals in Ladakh You Shouldn’t Miss
Calling Ladakh paradisical is an understatement, but if there were a magic wonderland in Paradise, it would have looked and felt like Ladakh — festive, whimsical, and pristine. The local cultural festivals are one of the many things that make Ladakh “just right” for Jammu and Kashmir tourism. Also known as Mini Tibet, this region of mountain passes is an amalgamation of Nepali and Tibetan culture and heritage, with festivals shadowing the simple and secluded life of the monks.
So, when you are on a trip, make sure it is planned around one of the famous festivals of Ladakh.
Sindhu Darshan
The 3-day festival that starts on a full-moon night in June celebrates the harmonious River Indus. Local artists worldwide perform at the cultural fest. People bring water from their own states and immerse in the Indus River at Shey, Lamas offer prayers, and sightseeing is organized for the tourists.
Losar
One of the biggest and oldest festivals in Ladakh dating back to the 7th Century, Losar marks the beginning of a New Year in Tibet. It is also a 15-day festival where prayers are performed, and food offerings are given to ancestors, animals, and Gods. Music and drama, based on the concept of good conquering evil, are performed by local artists.
Hemis Festival
Ladakh’s richest monastery, Hemis Gompa, hosts their 3-day annual festival to honor the birth of the founder of Tantric Buddhism in Tibet, Guru Padmasambhava. Monks and locals wear traditional clothes and accessories, like headgears, Kamar bandh, and temple jewelry, while the Lamas perform Chaam — masked conventional dance performances with drums, cymbals, and longhorns. The 4-storied long Thangka of the Guru is hung in the courtyard.
Saka Dawa
It is one of the most sacred festivals in Leh-Ladakh, celebrated on the 4th Month of the Tibetan calendar, when Buddha was believed to be born and attained spiritual awakening. Saka Dewa takes place in Leh. Locals and lamas follow religious rituals like refraining from killing animals, reciting the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra all day, performing sadhanas, offering food and mandalas, and saving animals.
Ladakh Carnival Festival
The Ladakh festival is a significant event organized by the Jammu and Kashmir tourism, celebrated between September 1st and 15th in Leh. The carnival is a cultural and musical blend of Tibet, North India, and Central Asia. Cultural troupes from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir participate in the grand possession, which includes dancers, orchestra, local leaders, students, etc. You can watch Lions and Yak dancing, craft exhibition, best of Kashmiri cuisines, folklore ceremonies, lama performances, and archery and polo competition.

Chenab Bridge: Book a Trip to Visit the World’s Highest Railway Bridge in India
Guess what will make India a favorite destination for global tourists next year? It is none other than the mesmerizing, hidden-in-the-cloud Chenab Bridge, which is not only one of the most special projects of the Ministry of Indian Railways and the Kashmir tourism sector but also the world’s highest single-arch railway bridge. Inaugurated in August 2022, this infrastructural marvel will forever link Kashmir Valley to the rest of the country for the first time since India’s Independence.
As one of the leading Ladakh news platforms, we take this opportunity to share a few facts about the uniquely-arched Chenab Bridge.
Facts About the ‘Golden Joint’ Over the Chenab RiverWhere and Why is the Chenab Bridge Built?
The Indian Railways constructed the Chenab Bridge as part of the 272-km long USBRL project (Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link).
The bridge rests above the Rive Chenab in the Kouri region of the Reasi district
It strategically connects Srinagar to the rest of the country, making Jammu and Kashmir tourism more lucrative and accessible to tourists. Sixteen other bridges are being constructed apart from the Chenab Bridge to improve the connection.
The bridge is 1.315km long and stands at a height of 359m or 1178 feet above the river bed.
It is the world’s highest railway bridge, not-so-surprisingly 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
The bridge’s lifespan is expected to be at least 120 years.
Details Underline the Construction and Building Process
The bridge comprises 93 deck segments, each weighing about 83 tons.
The construction was carried out by the Northern Railway of India, the northernmost zone of the Indian railways.
28,660 million tonnes of steel, 10 lakh cubic meters of earth, 66k cubic meters of concrete, and 26 km of motorable roads have been utilized to build the Chenab Bridge.
The design of the bridge is dated 120 years back. And the cost of the construction is reported to be around INR 1486 Crore, making the Golden Joint one of the costliest bridges ever constructed.
The most difficult part of the project was finishing the Steel Arch, which connects the 111km long stretch of the Katra and Banihal towns.
The Arch alone weighs 10619 million tons. Concrete-filled steel boxes are fitted to increase the stability and strength of the mountain slopes that support the foundation.
On 5th April 2022, the last piece of the steel arch was fitted at the highest point (359 m) to join the two arms of the arch. However, rail racks installation work will take another year to complete.
How Engineers Improved Its Performance and Efficiency
The overarch deck’s segments are joined using High Strength Friction Grip (HSFG) bolts to mark the significant Golden Joint. The nickname Golden Joint was given by civil engineers working on the project.
Due to the deep gorge under the bridge, the wind is a serious threat and can injure the stability of the structure.
National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) set up camp to monitor the site for quality, test samples, and inspect welds.
Advanced wind tunnel tests were conducted in Denmark to ascertain the speed and wind velocity. Using steel and heavy-duty alloy ensures the bridge withstands a wind speed of up to 266/km per hour.
An automatic signaling installed on both sides of the bridge will stop trains from passing if the wind speed crosses 90kmph.
Since the bridge is built in an earthquake-prone Seismic Zone IV, various seismic analyses were performed by experts from top IITs, including IIT-Delhi, Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore, and IIT-Roorkee.
Based on their research, the bridge was built to endure a Seismic Zone V-level earthquake, which is the country’s highest intensity of earthquake force.
The Kashmir Valley is also unpopular for its mine blasts. After consulting India’s premier research agency, Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Chenab Bridge was designed to be blast-proof.
By 2024, the Kashmir Tourism sector expects to see trains crossing the Chenab Bridge with tourists on the way to Srinagar. So, we are as excited as you to see Kashmir Valley from a spectacular viewpoint.

See this needle??
It's located in the Ladakh area, in the western part of the Himalayas near the border of India, Pakistan and China. It didn't have a name and nobody had ever climbed it.
Until now! Basque climbers Joseba Iztueta and Ekaitz Maiz recently managed to reach the summit at 5,760m by opening a new climbing route of around 1,500m. Not having a name, and wanting to give the needle some Basque meaning they decided to name it Amaiur Peak.
And they didn't stop at that! They opened 16 climbing routes more in this area of the Himalayas that will provide a lot of play for the next adventurers who visit the place, since they are all of a high level and require great skills.
Love this!!!

The Key Monastery is a famous Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Lahaul and Spiti District of India. Located at an altitude of 4,166 metres above the sea level, the monastery is very close to the Spiti River in the #Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh in India. Also known as the Kye Monastery, it is believed to have been founded by Dromton, who was a student of the famous teacher Atisha in the 11th century.
The Key Monastery is over a thousand years old, and apart from being the oldest, it is also the largest monastery that can be found in the entire Spiti Valley. The magnificent monastery doubles up as a religious training centre for the Lamas, and about 300 lamas receive their education from here. It has a long and quite fascinating history that is attached to it: a long history that involves numerous attacks that the place had to face. Nevertheless, the monastery survived and celebrated the completion of its thousand years in the year 2000 in the presence of Dalai Lama.

The silence of Kashmir, and the dangerous falsehoods of democracy, development, peace
As elections loom in India, eminent journalist Anuradha Bhasin, Editor Kashmir Times and a Knight Fellow at Stanford, questions whether hearts have really 'been won’ and ‘an era of progress established’ in her state?
The Indian state has papered over the silence of the media to push through a false narrative of development, democracy, and progress in Kashmir, making it a façade to hide the bigger picture. By Anuradha Bhasin  For Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kashmir continues to be an election prop. His chest-thumping about his ‘enthusiastic’ Kashmiri audience, which comprises forcibly corralled government…

Sanding Prayers by Brice Retailleau on Flickr
Arriving in Hemis Monastery is special enough. Largest and richest temple in Ladakh, you need no extra to make your visit memorable. Unless you arrive just a few days after Hemis yearly main festival where, for a few days, several monks went on building this sand mandala too big to fit on anyone I know's table. The work goes almost one grain at a time. It takes incredible patience through meditation. It is also a symbole of the ephemeral aspect of life as monks are going to destroy it within hours. Gotta be wise to accept that, when you broke your back building it for days.
