here is my physical arh book collection !!!

a few of them are art reference books with really nice glossy pictures !! and then the ethics and aesthetics one is not a book i would recommend. it’s very dense and i found it boring, but it was a gift from my postmodern design and architecture professor (so i keep it bc he was very nice)

the louvre and van gogh ones are just visual catalogues of the works contained in the louvre and the works van gogh created throughout this life with accompanying art-object information.

the mirror and the lamp is more about literary criticism, but i find that the same concepts apply when looking at art from the same time period.

the best book in this collection by far is john berger’s ways of seeing i think.

This is the first Star Wars property since the original trilogy that has felt to me like it is set in a real world: a whole, authentic world that you could walk into and get lost in. All the other Star Wars properties have been beautiful but fundamentally artificial, like you could see how every shot had been composed but couldn’t imagine a world outside that shot. Ferrix feels like a real place that is also a dream place, like the best of the original Star Wars trilogy. There is something non-artificial about it: the hillsides crawling with houses that look like the outskirts of Kabul, the eerie little sodium-lamp videophone cabins, the junkyards, the weird industrial hammer-adhan, the wastelands. I loved it.

This is a Star Wars show that is inescapably political. It is political and it is political in a way that is interpretable. The mining disaster on Kenari begs comparison to real-world disasters like Bhopal and the ability of corporate empires to simply write off whole worlds as sacrifice zones. (And I hope I’m right in detecting a note of ambivalence in the Cassian-Maarva relationship re: him not being allowed to ever confess the terrible truth of where he’s from; what does it mean for her to have “rescued” him in a way that is also straight-up kidnapping?) Several aspects of Ferrix seem directly patterned on Northern Ireland. Luthen’s speech about voices telling you what to do is extremely interesting in re: the politics of language and, particularly, the colonial history and present of English. My point is: where almost all major media franchises right now are completely soaked in this insidious ideology-that-is-not-ideological that renders them ultimately incapable of meaning— I’ve been thinking about this in regards to a famous John Berger quote about neoliberal capitalism creating a media of incoherence and discontinuity— this show is specifically and deliberately political. 

I’m extremely interested in the creative choice to include, in this major media franchise property, like ten or fifteen minutes of untranslated dialogue in a made-up language. I love this resistance to interpretation. I love this refusal to admit the audience into the interiority of these colonized people. 

I was recently re-watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and commented that the sequence in which Faramir’s battalion rides out to retake Osgiliath is an example of a way that most mainstream films and TV shows do not now approach storytelling. In that sequence, the camera lingers on and highlights specific scenes and details that do not contribute to our understanding of the plot itself in any way, but that are essential to understanding the meaning of the plot, i.e. why this story is being told. You might contrast this with the not-very-good Rings of Power show, which has a notoriously baffling slow-motion scene of Galadriel laughing while she rides a horse. The reason that this scene is baffling is because it seems to want to function in the same way as the retaking-of-Osgiliath sequence, but it does not actually communicate any meaning. My sense is that the people making the show do not actually understand how the retaking-of-Osgiliath sequence functions within the LOTR film narrative. All of this is to say that the Andor team understand that aspect of filmmaking, and much of the show consists of this kind of non-mechanical, artful filmmaking. I find this to be a relief. 

I have read a couple of reviews that are frankly baffling in their comments on the “shapelessness” of 1x01 and 1x02. Clearly 1x01-1x03 form a narrative and thematic whole. I don’t understand how you could watch these episodes and not perceive that they have a very clear structure as a three-part whole. The death of criticism.

Putting the "Wash" in Washington: Soap Lake

Among the local American Indian tribes there is a legend about an old woman who died near Soap Lake. Her people had to leave before the snows fell, and they did not have time to bury her. So they threw her body into the lake and continued on their journey. A few days later the old woman caught up with them. The lake water had brought her back to life.

Since prehistoric times, people have sought healing from the waters of hot springs across the world. Washington State has several, which is not remarkable, but what about an entire lake saturated with minerals like sodium, silicon, chloride, various sulphates, aluminum, potassium, and magnesium? That place is Soap Lake, in the northeast of the state.

The American Indians of eastern Washington recognized the healing powers of the lake when they drank its waters. In the summer and fall, members of many tribes gathered there, calling it Skokiam, which meant something like "strong" or "healing" waters. They camped there for days or weeks, gathering roots, racing horses, and socializing with their friends and relatives.

American settlers moved into the area in the mid-1800s. They found that when they swam in the lake, they floated more easily in its mineral-rich waters than they did in normal water or even in the ocean. And they were amazed to find that when washed their clothes, they did not need soap. The water formed suds and lathered when they rubbed their clothes against the rocks-and so they named the place Soap Lake.

Many settlers also noticed that although the lake was cold, they felt better after a plunge in its waters. They promoted the lake waters as a cure for rheumatism, arthritis, lumbago, and skin diseases such as eczema. In the early 1900s, several businessmen opened spa resorts in the area and piped in water from the lake for bathing as well as for patrons to drink. Some people gathered mud from the east end to coat the bodies of people suffering from joint pain. It may also cured a condition known as Berger's Disease, a cardiovascular ailment caused by exposure to mustard gas in World War I.

Soap Lake is not easy to get to, and over time the inconvenience made it less appealing. Today many people stop at Soap Lake only because they are on the highway headed to other places, like Grand Coulee Dam. Consequently, the town now has a somewhat forlorn look. The buildings are in good repair, but many display FOR SALE signs. Although some of the original resorts have been torn down, there are still plenty of others to stay: motels along the lake and several campgrounds and RV parks that hug its south and east sides.

In a bid to regain some of its former glory, Soap Lake took ownership of a fifty-foot-tall lava lamp and hopes to install it downtown. However, it is not easy for the town of about a thousand people to come up with the several thousand dollars needed to set it up.

Not a Washout

Soap Lake was formed over a period of several thousand years by a dramatic geologic process involving an ice dam that blocked the Columbia River, causing it to cut a channel through what is now the lake. The dam burst at the end of the Ice Age, allowing the Columbia River to flow in its present-day channel. Water still flowed into Soap Lake, however, though layers of basalts, granites, and other stone, carrying many minerals with it.

Over the last twelve hundred years, hot, dry weather evaporated much of the lake water, concentrating the minerals. These minerals divided into two distinct layers: The bottom of the lake is ten times saltier than the Pacific Ocean and cooler than the water on the lake's surface, making it too heavy to rise and mix with the warmer upper layer, which has a high alkali content. The healing mud at the bottom of the lake also seals the lake bottom, stopping minerals from leaching back into the bedrock.

Large aquatic animals cannot survive in the lake due to its heavy mineral content. It is home instead to algae, bacteria, and small crustaceans, which may be the key to some of its healing powers. It also contains a substance called ichthyols, created when the crustaceans in the lake die and decompose. Ichthyol oil is used in Europe as a salve for cuts, burns, and minor injuries.

In the 1950s, several engineering projects increased the amount of water flowing into Soap Lake, diluting its mineral content. The citizens of Soap Lake appealed to the federal government to have pump and well system set up to drain off the fresh water before it flowed into the lake, hopefully preserving its benefits for future generations of bathers.

On entend souvent cette phrase : « L’Eternel est mon berger ». Mais qu’est-ce que ça veut dire vraiment ? Et en quoi le fait que l’Eternel est mon berger amène du repos dans ma vie chargée et difficile ?

Oui, du repos pour notre âme fatiguée et chargée par les soucis du monde, il y en a. Et par cet article j’aimerais t'aider à creuser une belle vérité biblique, afin que tu puisses cultiver davantage le repos en Dieu.

« L’Eternel est mon berger : je ne manquerai de rien. » Psaume 23.1

‍L’Eternel est mon berger

Dieu EST mon berger. Il est mon berger: d’un côté, un berger est doux, tendre, et aimant, il prend soin de son troupeau, il le fait paître, et il va chercher les brebis qui se perdent; d’un autre côté, il est fort et puissant, il protège son troupeau contre tout danger et il va même jusqu’à se sacrifier pour ses brebis. N’oublions pas aussi qu’un bon berger corrige les brebis qui s’égarent. Il n’est pas indifférent face à leurs égarements. Jean 10.11 nous montre cela quand Jésus est décrit comme « le bon berger qui donne sa vie pour ses brebis ».

Te rappelles-tu du roi David ? Avant d’être roi, il était berger. Et lorsqu’il se décrit en tant que berger, il dit : « Quand un lion ou un ours venait pour en enlever une du troupeau, je courais après lui, je le frappais et j'arrachais la brebis de sa gueule. S'il m’attaquait, je l’attrapais par la gorge, je le frappais et je le tuais. » (1 Samuel 17.34-35) La parabole de la brebis perdue en Luc 15 est aussi un bon exemple. Un homme perd une de ses brebis, et il la cherche jusqu’à ce qu’il la trouve. Une fois qu’il l’a trouvée, il se réjouit et demande aux autres de se réjouir avec lui. Oui, Dieu a un troupeau. Mais Dieu aime chacune de ses brebis individuellement. Toi, en tant qu’enfant de Dieu, tu es aimé et protégé par Dieu de manière personnelle et individuelle. Tu n’es pas juste une brebis parmi plein d’autres brebis. Tu es une de ses brebis. Tu es parfaitement connu, recherché, sauvé, et aimé. Repose-toi en cette vérité ; la vérité de l’amour et de la protection de Dieu pour toi en tant qu’individu.

L’Eternel est ton berger.

L'Éternel connaît tous tes besoins

Que veut dire que tu ne manqueras de rien ?Déjà, cela ne veut pas dire que tu auras dans cette vie tout ce que tu voudras. Dieu n’est pas le génie de la lampe d’Aladdin qui nous donne tout ce qu’on veut, quand on le veut. C’est lui le berger. C’est lui celui qui dirige, et il connaît nos besoins mieux que nous les connaissons. « Je ne manquerai de rien » ne veut pas dire «j’aurais ma maison de rêve, mon boulot de rêve, ma santé de rêve, et ainsi de suite». Ça veut plutôt dire « étant donné que l’Eternel est mon berger, je ne manquerai de rien. Si j’ai l’Eternel en tant que berger, j’ai tout. Il est à moi, donc je ne manquerai de rien. »

L'Éternel connaît tous tes besoins. Il te connaît mieux que tu te connais toi-même, et en plus de ça, il a un plan avec ta vie : il veut te faire progresser dans la foi (Phil. 2.13), afin que tu matures et que tu ressembles de plus en plus à Jésus-Christ. Alors, s’il connaît parfaitement tes besoins, reposes-toi ! Lorsque tu n’as pas tout ce que tu désires, fais confiance au bon berger qui connaît le mieux tes besoins. Fais confiance au bon berger qui veut ton bien !Et, comme Richard Briggs disait: « entraîne ta perception du besoin afin qu’elle soit mieux en phase avec ce que Dieu pourvoit. » En d’autres mots, pousse tes besoins à s’adapter à ce que Dieu offre.

Sa personne est suffisante, donc ce qu’il pourvoit est aussi suffisant.

L’Eternel est ton berger, tu ne manqueras de rien.

Oui, cher chrétien chargé par les soucis de la vie, tu peux trouver du repos dans cette merveilleuse vérité que la parole de Dieu proclame. L’Eternel t’aime, te protège et te garde, toi, en tant qu’individu. Il pourvoit à tous tes besoins, lui, ton créateur, celui qui te connaît le mieux. Il sait vraiment quels sont tes besoins et comment y pourvoir, pour ton bien, et pour sa gloire ! Alors, fais confiance au bon berger, et avance sur le chemin de la vérité, en te reposant dans la sécurité qu’il t’offre.
