Lisa Marie and daddy Elvis, the generous tooth fairy 🧚🏼‍♂️

When talking about how Lisa Marie Presley was bred, Becky Yancey (who was Graceland's secretary) was clear in state that Priscilla wanted to build character in little Lisa Marie, whereas Elvis was more such in a high with being a daddy that he just wanted to see Lisa happy all the time.

Since Priscilla was pregnant with Lisa, according to Becky, when she didn't even knew if the baby was a he or a she, Priscilla feared her kid would grow up not knowing the true value of things if she had everything granted to her that easily, with presents heaped on her all the time. According to Becky, some of Priscilla's words were on this matter were, "I don't want the baby living off Elvis' name". Daddy Elvis didn't care a bit for that talk. He spoiled Lisa to a fault, doing everything he could think of that could make his baby girl as happy as she could be.

To be fair, it's easy understand both sides. Obviously it's not that Priscilla didn't wanted Lisa to be a happy child but, as any caring mother normally does, her sight was way ahead in time and she worried about Lisa's personality in the future, not wanting a little brat walking around feeling all entitled to everything at a snap. This would help older Lisa to be conscious in understand about how privileged she was and the reality of the real world which is way apart from the "Elvis world" Lisa would grow up in. Elvis certainly was not a bad parent for spoiling his daughter either. He just couldn't help it. He loved seeing people smiling, thus it couldn't be any different when it comes to his little princess, his first born child. Who are we to judge parents and their parenting choices anyway, right?

The main point here is: I'd like to share a couple of stories on Becky Yancey's book about how funny-daddy Elvis Presley was excited and very proud of his child. To begin with, let's see how Elvis himself helped decorating Lisa's nursery at Graceland and how he loved to show Lisa around to his fans:

With the baby's arrival, the attention at Graceland shifted from Elvis to Priscilla to Lisa Marie. And Priscilla quickly learned that there was more spoiling to fear from the loving indulgences of the proud father and grandfather than from fans. Fans would have been happy to spoil Lisa, but Priscilla could keep them at a distance. Elvis and Mr. Presley (Vernon) were a more difficult problem. Elvis himself shopped for statuettes, pictures, and knick-knacks to fill Lisa's new nursery, which had at one time been a little-used conference room. Lisa wasn't old enough to toddle before Elvis had a gym set erected for her in the back yard. When she was big enough to play with it, Elvis often played with her. At other times we could look through the window or walk out the door and watch Elvis in a golf cart, with Lisa on his lap, driving slowly around the mansion grounds. One time he thrilled fans and gave his security goose bumps when he hoisted Lisa onto his broad shoulders and ambled down the driveway to greet the people standing in front of the Music Gate. It was one of the few times Lisa was photographed at Graceland by persons other than the family members. Priscilla may have had something to say about that incident, because Elvis never did it again.

Second story, the title of the post. I found it so funny. This was after Elvis and Priscilla divorced (post 1973).

Priscilla laughs about the time Lisa was visiting her father in Las Vegas and lost a baby tooth. The tooth fairy left her five dollars. "I told Elvis that the tooth fairy usually left fifty cents, that five dollars was a little steep," she said. "He knew I wasn't angry, and he laughed about it. After all, who would expect Elvis Presley to know the going rate for a tooth?"

Trick or Treat

Hiya, happy Halloween! Thanks for playing my lil trick or treat inbox game for fic writers 🎃

I am an absolute chaos gremlin who writes all my wips out of order and also works on anywhere between three and six projects at once, so I had a little trouble deciding which one to feature as a "treat"/sneak peak 😅 and the one I did decide on requires a little context!

I recently traveled to Las Vegas for my birthday, and being there inspired me to start working on an epilogue/sequel of sorts for my fic What Happens In Vegas, which was posted earlier this year as my entry for the Soul Eater fandom Resonance Bang event (my first time ever participating!). WHIV is very special to me for many reasons, so working on an epilogue feels very gratifying.

At 3 pm, there is a knock on the door to Professor Maka Albarn's office. 

Her office, which is only just now starting to sink in that it's hers, after a period of about six months that felt more like approximately six minutes. 

It's hers, and it's not a miserably tiny, sad excuse for an office with oversized clocks and disorganized, dizzying stacks of paper. It’s respectably sized, large enough for a set of table and chairs in the corner opposite her desk, and even a plant or two - and impeccably organized to boot. It's warmly decorated with notes and gifts from her students, inspirational posters and clever knick-knacks she's accumulated over the years, and even photos - photos of her travels, her accomplishments and proudest moments. Memories made alongside the most important people in her life - her Papa and her friends and her role models.

And of course, Soul - her best friend, partner, weapon, fiancé.

That last title, she's still getting used to.

Utah Trip, Part 1

This is part of a multi-part blog series for a documentary currently in creation. The purpose is to document the cool things and places visited, as well as discuss being disabled while staying at a hotel. You can find other parts to this particular series HERE.

From the Bay Area to Mohave

I have wanted to keep statistics of my trips for blog posts like this. They make stories so much more interesting! Like, how many miles were driven to each location, how long these trips take, how much you think you'll spend vs how much you actually spend on knick-knacks.

But it is here that I need to point out that this won't be entirely possible for the entire trip. The reason being that I got my car broken into on my last day of the trip. But that will be expanded upon in another post and I'll like it here.

I started this trip for a documentary that I'm working on (yet another post that will be linked here). And it was decided to go in late March. This is important because there were winter warnings going on between the Bay Area and Salt Lake City.

Since there was only a 57mi difference, I decided to go through Las Vegas and go to the farthest National Park first. This way I could hit the other planned parks on the way back home.

In my 20s, I would've thought that I could drive the entire 13+ HRS to Arches. But I'm not so much in a hurry anymore.

This translated to stopping in Mohave, CA for the night. I know nothing about this town and after staying there for a night... I still know nothing. Except that they have a wind turbine farm going on. Something I did not know about these turbines is that they have red lights. Which is unnerving at night if you aren't used to seeing a thousand red dots blinking throughout the night. This is almost certainly for planes flying overhead.

In the past, I've always declared that I would never stay at a motel with a number attached to it. Since I'm a completely different person, and I remember never giving Motel + Number a try, I decided to give the Motel 6 a try. Here is my review:

In short, this place cuts corners. I now know that I'll never stay in another Motel 6. There's a reason they cost $65 or less.

In long: Motel 6 is a mysterious motel that has somehow survived in spite of not having any quality to their rooms.

First of all, there are smoking rooms. As someone with chronic rhinitis, it amazes me that that's something I need to look out for. But smoking rooms still exist. I worry that this point would be considered controversial, but I just don't understand the concept of smoking inside a room. That is a fire hazard, period.

Secondly, I don't know that the beds they own are technically beds. "Slab" would be more accurate. I understand that everyone has a different back. Rock Hard is a weird choice for a mattress.

Everything felt like the cheapest possible version and was thrown into the wash with bleach and cut the dryer out to save on the electricity bill. Towels are rough, as is the toilet paper. And the shower looked like a murder scene occurred there. I have no idea if that's a joke, which scares me.

Back to the Trip...

The last part of this post will cover something I started noticing after the stay in Motel 6. But I was always placed in a second story room.

This is something I hadn't paid attention to until now. My knees are hurting more and more, and bringing everything I own in my car up to my room started to prove an issue. Many people (including a 20yo me) would say that it's not a big deal and that it's laziness to just leave everything in my car.

Simply put, this is a disability to not be able to haul everything up three or four times. That's at least 3 stories! And I'm trying to look out for myself and not push anything over the limit.

But this isn't the first motel or hotel to do this. I will speculate further on why this is a thing in future posts. For the time being, I think this is age-based. Not agism, exactly. The presumption I believe is based on what most people think is an able-bodied person walking into the lobby of the hotel/motel.

Houston Rockets Deal Jermaine Taylor to Sacramento Kings

On December 15th, 2010, the Houston Rockets traded guard Jermaine Taylor and cash considerations to the Sacramento Kings for a conditional 2011 second round draft pick.

The Houston Rockets looked to add some youth to the roster in the 2009 NBA Draft. The team made a few trades during the draft, acquiring the draft rights to first rounder Chase Budinger.

The Rockets also acquired second round pick (number 32 overall) Jermaine Taylor. from the Washington Wizards for cash considerations. Houston paid $2.4 million for the rights to Taylor.

A high-flyer, the 6-foot-4 Taylor was the 2008-09 CUSA Player of the Year after averaging 26.2 PPG for the UCF Knights.

Taylor joined the Rockets for Summer League in Las Vegas where he averaged 11.0 PPG on 38% shooting and 2.3 APG in four games, including two starts.

The Rockets signed Taylor to a four-year contract worth $3.33 million with team options in the final two years of the deal.

Houston was missing star Yao Ming all season due to injury and other star Tracy McGrady was trying to return from a serious knee injury. before he was dealt at the trade deadline to the New York Knicks.

The Rockets were 17-11 after 28 games. The team hovered around .500 for much of the year and finished with a 42-40 record. The Western Conference saw all eight playoff teams win at least 50 games, keeping Houston out of the playoff picture.

Taylor was a limited participant in his rookie season. The guard played in 31 games (four starts) and managed 4.1 PPG, 1.5 RPG and 0.5 APG in 37.8% from the field. Taylor spent some of the 2008-09 season in the D-League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

The UCF Product played in eight D-League games, putting up 18.0 PPG on 48% shooting, 4.8 RPG and 2.1 APG in 27.8 MPG. When he did play, Taylor was able to flash some of the athleticism that made him an auspicious scoring prospect.

Taylor once again joined the Rockets for 2010 Summer League. Though he shot just 28.6% from three, Taylor thrived for the Rockets, recording 18.4 PPG, 4.8 RPG and 2.0 APG in five games. Taylor's effort gave him a spot on the 2010 NBA Summer League All-Tournament Team.

Taylor played three games in preseason with Houston ahead of the 2010-11 season. His future was in doubt as the Rockets looked at potentially adding veteran center Erick Dampier and cutting a player to make room for the big man.

Taylor's name came up in rumors for a trade or to get cut, but he ended up staying with the Rockets. Taylor once again saw limited time. He appeared in eight games for Houston before he was traded to the Sacramento Kings. Taylor averaged 4.9 PPG and 1.1 RPG in 9.6 MPG.

After the Rockets swung a deal to acquire swingman Terrence Williams from the New Jersey Nets in a three-team deal, Houston had to offload Taylor to free up a roster spot for Williams. The Rockets were 10-14 when they traded Taylor.

In 39 games with the Rockets, Taylor posted 4.3 PPG, 1.4 RPG and 0.5 APG. The Central Florida product shot 40% from the field, 26% from the three-point line and 73% from the free-throw line in that time.

Taylor joined a Sacramento Kings team at the bottom of the standings. The Kings were 5-17 when they acquired Taylor. The losing would continue as Sacramento finished the 2010-11 season with a 24-58 record.

Taylor was given more of an opportunity to play after joining the Kings. He appeared in 26 contests (eight starts) and amassed 7.1 PPG, 2.0 RPG, 1.2 APG and 0.5 SPG in 15.6 MPG. Thanks to an injury to starter Tyreke Evans, Taylor had a chance to start seven consecutive games where he averaged 13.0 PPG on 52.1% shooting and 3.0 RPG in 26.8 MPG.

After the end of the '10-'11 season, the Kings waived Taylor in the offseason. The final two years of Taylor's contract were team options and non-guaranteed if he was waived by August 1.

Taylor went on to sign with the Liaoning Flying Leopards of the Chinese Basketball Association during the 2011 NBA lockout. He returned to the D-League and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in 2012 after the lockout ended.

The second round pick Houston acquired from Sacramento was conditional and heavily protected. Though no media outlets said specifics of the protections, Pro Sports Transactions says the pick was top-55 protected. Either way, the pick was never conveyed to the Rockets.

Jermaine Taylor on joining the Kings (via Kings.com):

"I'm excited to be here. I hope to get playing time and show people what I can do. I don't think I really got a fair chance in Houston, but hopefully it changes here, and I get an opportunity."

On his reaction when he heard he was traded (via Kings.com):

"I feel really good. I think I have a chance to get to play here. I'm excited about the opportunity, and I'm ready to get started."

On the qualities he brings to Sacramento:

"I'm a scorer. I can definitely get out and run in transition. I get in the paint and find guys, but mostly, scoring—that's my strength."

On his impressions of the city of Sacramento:

"I haven't really done too much yet, since it's been raining. I've been driving around, and I like it. The city is nice and quiet—kind of similar to where I;m from back home in Central Florida."

How he attacks the basket and his style of play:

"I play above the rim. Plays like dunks get me going, so I'm trying to dunk everything. If I get on the fast break, I'm going to dunk. I'm trying to look for that highlight-reel play all the time."

On the differences between Sacramento and Houston:

"It's a little bit different, but I think this is a talented team with a lot of good players. We have a lot more games left, and I'm going to work as hard as I can to help turn it around."

"We have a lot more to learn about Jermaine, but he plays hard and is very athletic. He has a nose for getting the shot, and he's known as being a scorer."
