Covering the top of your soil with gravel or rocks is supposed to help with gnats - I don't know if it will stop them once they're in, but it'll help prevent them in the future.
Oh, thanks! That actually explains why the red bucket seems to have been less affected -- it has a gravel layer and also a ton of leafmould on top (basically when anything dies it goes on top of the red bucket plants. :D ) Great tip, I appreciate it!
The gnat trap caught three yesterday but only one since, so I'm hoping the gnats at least were a quick fix. (The kitchen weevils, on the other hand, are going to take an entire bottle of white vinegar, I suspect...)

I request, please,,, whatever you want, Author with Illi,,, whether he’s hunting him, an au where he already somehow has him… or King Author in our Royal au, basking in the glory of all the fallen kings…
Illinois hauled ass through the trees, ignoring the growing stitch in his side as best he could as he ran. He could hear the deranged creep chasing after him, and he closed his eyes for a moment, pressing on harder through the forest.
"Oh Illinois~"
The Author's singsong call echoed through the trees, and suddenly there he was, standing in front of Illi, bat over his shoulder, and Illinois made a startled sound before veering off to avoid him. He just had to find the way out of this damned forest, had to find people, and then he'd be safe, he'd be out of the man's territory, and Illinois had always been pretty slippery, he could hide until the Author got bored of trying to track him down.
"Boo~"
The voice sounded like it was directly in his ear, and Illinois cried out, swinging to punch -- but all his fist hit was a tree, and he stumbled to a stop, nearly falling over with how jarring the miss had been. His lungs burned, he could taste iron in the back of his throat, his hand now throbbed --
"There you are~"
Illinois tensed, and he made to bolt, but it was too late. He was tackled to the forest floor, leafmould getting in his mouth, until his head was yanked back with a hand fisted tight in his hair. He'd lost his hat some time ago. He felt more than saw the bat thunk to ground beside him, and the pen held to his throat felt just as sharp as a blade.
"Oh I'm going to have fun with you~"

Broad beans are easy to grow! Choose a well-drained, sheltered and sunny site. Dig the ground well before sowing any seeds and improve the soil by either add some manure or some leafmould.

"It is not something I can easily teach to one so young, one who barely has any rings within them," the tree said, regarding them through several hollow eyes in its trunk. When the child asked, it said, "You stand, whatever the weather or the season, and if you stand long enough without falling, you will have another ring." And when the child planted their feet in the leafmould and gave every indication of intending to do just that despite their tender, barkless body and undeveloped roots, the tree traded favors with the nearby vines and bound them up, a bolster to their sapling strength.

For the weird ask: 98, 93, 2, 7, 9, 16, 24, 33 and 56!
2. Chocolate bars or lollipops?
CHOCOLAAAATE BAAAAAARS OMNOMNOMNOM
7. Earbuds or headphones?
Earbuds actually, I find most headphones to be so heavy - and they make the shell of my ears feel sore…
9. Favorite smell in the summer?
Have you ever bent down towards the forest floor in high summer and just taken in the smell of leafmould, soggy moss, and fertile soil? It is delightful. Incidentally, my old cat Brutus, born and bred of the woods, smelled exactly the same. <3
16. Most comfortable sitting position?
*laughs in chronic leg pain* EHMMMMM… well, I do enjoy the ten-to-fifteen minutes of painless sitting in the chaise, my feet stretched out over the stool as I rest~ before everything goes to shit again and I have to change position
24. Favorite crystal?

33. Most used phrase in your phone?
Probably “pick me up now pls” lol.

Annie, Sofia, A-S, Big Sis etc.
98. Favorite historical era?

I love literary Prowly. :) Is he exploring any particular themes in his novel, or is it a picaresque Halloween narrative?
It's an adventure novel, based on his journeys in...the wilderness.
Tumblr media
[Description: Prowly the owl is seated in a pile of leafmould, in front of a large plant that we believe, but cannot be sure, is an orchid (@scifigrl47 gave me a clipping from her Mystery Plant). He is much smaller than the orchid and does look like he could be a wilderness explorer when in reality this is just a planter on my windowsill.]

Plant of the Day
Tuesday 22 December 2020
In a sheltered, damp border Blechnum chilense (Chilean hard fern) has formed a dense colony of evergreen fronds. This fern from Chile and Argentina may not be fully hardy and so benefits from a mulch with a thick layer of leafmould as protection in a cold location.

What Kind of Times Are These?
Adrienne Rich
There's a place between two stands of trees where the grass grows uphill
and the old revolutionary road breaks off into shadows
near a meeting-house abandoned by the persecuted
who disappeared into those shadows.
I've walked there picking mushrooms at the edge of dread, but don't be fooled
this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here,
our country moving closer to its own truth and dread,
its own ways of making people disappear.
I won't tell you where the place is, the dark mesh of the woods
meeting the unmarked strip of light—
ghost-ridden crossroads, leafmould paradise:
I know already who wants to buy it, sell it, make it disappear.
And I won't tell you where it is, so why do I tell you
anything? Because you still listen, because in times like these
to have you listen at all, it's necessary
to talk about trees.

Hi! So, Ive loved shroomish and breloom for years, but since I've really only had normal and rock types, so this would be really new for me. Do you have any advice on what I should do?
Oh boy you’ve picked a great grass type to start on! Shroomish is happiest when it’s in the forest of course. Walks with your new friend are great to build a bond together and experience things that bring you closer as a pair. They don’t require as much sunlight as an ordinary grass type so just having a window they can get to is enough when their at home. If you can gather leaves for them to rummage and settle into, they it helps them feel at home. Having a small space either on a balcony or in a garden where there’s perhaps some old logs and a little tray of soil will make them very happy. Extra additions include a few ferns in pots or a little shrubs that loses its leaves in the autumn, so long as it stays moist and a little shady they’ll feel right at home and very comfortable. If you fancy some flowers around, try foxgloves, there pretty and good for your Pokémon and the bees! Deep frost should be avoided, you could bring the forest patch indoors for them during winter, but they’d be ok just staying inside for a few months, going out for walks and playtime in the day. Their diet is nutrients absorbed from the soil and a little photosynthesis. They’ll want to pop their feet in some soil when it’s cold to regain nutrients, a small bucket or pot is enough.
Once they evolve you must maintain a routine of exercise, they become a dual fighting type and have a lot of energy! Buying a punchbag or setting up a battle zone for them to practice in is perfect. They have guts! They’ll try to fight things that are too big and too strong for them, so keep an eye on them. Feeding becomes a longer process, so letting them root in good moist soil, with ideally leafmould in it (rotted down disease free called leaves) is perfect, it’s hummus rich and they can Cut their rooting time down, the richer the soil it.
otherwise just avoid ice type battles, it can cause long term damage. Bug types can sometimes find your Pokemon’s mushroom like body tasty, signs to watch for are slugma and whimpod bite marks. If you keep your Pokémon indoors though, this should not be an issue. Hope this helps, there a very forgiving grass type and you will find them energetic and completely endearing, good luck!

Monty Don shares top tips for potting compost in winter
Monty Don shares top tips for potting compost in winter
Monty suggested that coir is a good alternative to peat. He said: “Coir is very effective especially if mixed with home-made garden compost and/or leafmould.  “Composted bark works very well in most cases. Composted bracken makes an excellent ericaceous alternative, as does composted pine needles. All are widely available.” The gardening expert explained that by mixing in “extra goodness” and…
