(Pile 3): The 9 of wands in Reverse: needing to relax, take time out, heal, recover. Not repeat the mistakes that hurt you, the actions that did - the choices. Ace of Cups brings in Archangel Gabriel - Cancer Scorpio Pisces, Water and the Water element in general. Whales, dolphins, mermaids, oceans. Star Children comes up as well; the Aquatic or Watery races. (Trying to please everyone) comes up; something typical of water signs. Try not to do this. You may be feeling highly intuitive, emotional, sensitive. You are a natural healer. Healing (Chiron) is in Reverse: try to see a Reiki healer or therapist. Find where Chiron is in your birthchart to figure out where your biggest wounds are, so you can better heal them. Buy books on emotional healing. Set a day aside for only self-love. Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn comes up as well (and birds: specifically a large beaked one. Also pills? Somebody might be on medication for their mental health. I also get elephants and a dog (a big brown one). Pets can heal!

EMDR Trauma Therapy Saved my Life

I felt the shock of ice cold kitchen tile against my tear-streaked cheek. I laid there sobbing and screaming, the gut wrenching birth of death, the pull on my body and in my throat to capitulate to the world that my daughter died and to seemingly physically extract part of her from me now. I rocked myself upright, dizzy and spent. I feel a dog licking my face, another lying in the corner suffering her own grief. Even the dog lost weight as quickly as I drained myself of hunger, of vomit induced by panic attacks and bad dreams of Taylor dying over and over and over for two years. Now, I choose not to think of the two years before EMDR trauma therapy. I can’t believe I made it through the worst a mother can bear.

After almost 7 years after Taylor died by suicide, I’ve regained weight and so has the dog. Two years of talk therapy within the constructs of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) didn’t make a dent in my guilt. In fact, it’s been proven to worsen PTSD. CBT just couldn’t get past the amygdala’s screaming sirens of regret and blame. The therapy allows for new neuropathways that physically curb invasive thoughts and memories. Hypnosis, Reiki, meditation, medication, riding my bike, hiking, writing; all of my coping mechanisms that brought me to healing did not surpass my stuck brain but proved vital after trauma therapy.

EMDR trauma therapy, or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing addresses PTSD, complicated grief, and trauma.  I couldn’t see that at the end of EMDR, I would not incriminate myself. EMDR allowed for my limbic system to disengage from the powerful fight or flight reactions and allow for my brain to process my guilt and end my self-destructive nosedive. It moves glucose from the limbic brain to the thinking brain, the pre-frontal cortex that is fed by the breath and glucose.

EMDR mimics REM, rapid eye movement that we experience in sleep. That process of bilateral stimulation allows the brain to shuffle through the day, the pain, the fear, to categorize memories, and to grow and repair cellular tissue which can’t happen when you’re stressed. The therapy allowed for me to remove the limiting belief that I was solely responsible for my daughter having taken her own life.

A single trauma like this one can be managed in a shorter length of time than traditional therapy. The 90 minute sessions utilize easy, non-threatening bars of light or as is my preference, tiny paddles that gently vibrate in the palms of the hand, left and right and back again to mimic rapid eye movement, creating bilateral stimulation. This back and forth is why walking in nature decreases limbic response by half! The session is precision and results-oriented to identify and address the trauma, replace the limited belief with a positive image or idea, then calm the brain and body by finding and utilizing a safe place in the mind. This technique uses the familiar guided mediation method found on any meditation app. For people who have experienced abuse, more than one event, or prolonged trauma, more sessions are required but far fewer than traditional cognitive therapy sessions, which is another reason it is recognized as one of the effective PTSD therapies for veterans. CBT heightens trauma response, aggravates PTSD to a new level, and rarely helps the core issue as discussed.

EMDR allowed for me to incorporate the myriad of healing behaviors, cognitive brain training, relaxation, and growth I needed to navigate life on new terms. Trauma therapy allowed for me to incorporate the healing processes and healthy behaviors I needed to make new life experiences. I have experienced no negative side effects, decreased depression, and those haunting bad dreams and sleepless nights have ceased. It is not a cure for grief. Grieving is a necessary process. Trauma is not. Grieving and the benefits of actively healing guide us to understand our pain in the book The Grieving Brain: The Surprising Science of How We Learn from Love and Loss by Dr. Mary Frances O’Connor.

I train my brain with the same safe place meditation I used in EMDR to experience the joys around me, to choose to laugh and to have fun and to bathe in the joys of nature in the present moment. I remind myself not to avoid the pain of missing my daughter but to steer clear of the judgment of it all. We hold ourselves responsible to ourselves and we can pay attention to the souls who are living among us and the body, mind, and spirit that we have been blessed with for this short time if we can teach ourselves to trust the power of the physical body, brain, and how it all works together in life.

I practice Reiki for humans and for animals, and no surprises – dogs are my specialism.

It was a beloved dog who brought me to Reiki as we came to the end of the traditional medicine options to help him… prior to that I knew very little about it but the results were indisputable so, for the second time in my life, Dog Listening being the first, I knew it was meant to be and I was once again hooked on learning this beautiful modality for myself.

Reiki is a complementary therapy often described as an energy healing system based on traditional Japanese ritual. It can be used by anyone open to learning it to enhance their own wellness and that of their family and friends. At the very least, Reiki is extremely relaxing, and additionally can stimulate the body’s own innate healing abilities to overcome pain and trauma. It can often feel like something has been released, and that could be a physical movement blockage, or even something less tangible but no less important, like gaining a feeling of lightness and positivity.

However, the approach taken for humans is very different to the approach used when animals are involved. The human client generally stays in place, in a chair or on a reiki table and the practitioner moves around placing hands on the head, the torso for example. With an animal however, this time the practitioner stays in place and offers the animal the opportunity to approach as closely as it desires. In this way, the animal’s sensitivity and innate intelligence is respected. Sometimes they absolutely choose to get as close as possible! But often they prefer no physical contact at all and just being nearby is perfect for them at that time. There is no need, for example, for tethering the horse in order to be able to place hands on his shoulder – if he wants you to touch him, he will come and stand close enough. And if he doesn’t, that’s ok too, he will still benefit from the practitioner. The Let Animals Lead® method was developed by renowned teacher and author, Kathleen Prasad. Animal Reiki treatment is offered in your home, and I often find that a combined approach with the dog’s guardian receiving a treatment first is a very effective session… as you’ll know my role is about peaceful people AND peaceful dogs… our animals want US to be relaxed and look after ourselves… they find it very soothing and encourages their best chance of healing.

My host family in Antigua - the couple was the same age as me and they had a feisty little daughter, Sofía. Unfortunately, their young dog caused a few problems so I grew resentful and was glad to leave after a week. But I enjoyed the learning opportunity because we always had long conversations in Spanish during our meals together!

The fresh laundry smell of the towels during my massage. Lemongrass-flavoured macadamia oil. Chill vibes and relaxing music, a nice masseuse. A good experience. Afterwards: more pampering. A lovely coffee to go and a passion fruit macaron. Making an appointment to get piercings.

I went to a shitty hostel party with Moana and Declan and was promptly abandoned. The attractive Austrian guy ignored me as well after a very short conversation. Frustrating. But I was very grateful for Miles and Lucie, a friendly couple from the UK. They took pity on me and I actually ended up having a good time. I even swapped shirts with Miles when he spun the wheel and got clothes swap with the opposite gender as a dare.

Simple but delicious Guatemalan food. Making Dobladas together. Frijoles con Tortrix. Invueltas de coliflor (cauliflower dipped in egg, then fried). Atole (a drink that reminds me of semolina pudding) and Chayote (a local type of vegetable).

Finally starting with my Insta stories, trying to catch up on the first two months of my sabbatical. Getting lots of positive feedback!

My first volcano hike (Pacaya). Walking uphill and climbing over the rocks was extremely hard and exhausting for me but somehow the view is always worth the pain. We grilled marshmallows over the hot stones, there was smoke coming out between the interesting lava formations. The sunset above the clouds was breathtaking and I got to pet a few horses.

Breathwork with Arija. Adiemus. A floating, expanding energy feeling. So good. Drawing OSHO cards. I got Past Lives and Celebration.

Swimming in the clear lake. A few rays of sunshine. Writing in my journal.

Lipton frambuesa ice tea. Palomitas with butter and salt. Mildly obsessed.

A day at Eagle's Nest. Breathwork. Talking to Ines and getting to know Véro from Canada/Paris. Drinking cappuccino with a view, sketching interesting houses from a distance. CATS. A spontaneous decision to stay for yoga. Shockingly it was a hip hop hip opener class but I was surprised by how much fun I had! Chrystee's awesome playlist surely helped. I felt strong and flexible and advanced. The view over Lago Atitlán from the platform made me feel so privileged. I received lots of recommendations, e.g. eating at Búho (which I did and the vegan tasting menu was incredibly delicious), and Roatan tips from Véro. We also talked about brave location and business changes.

Yoga, Reiki and then a lovely breathwork class with lots of breath retention and visuals. Purple, pink and orange. Emerging shapes. The reiki teacher touching our chakra points. I tried to paint what I saw using watercolours afterwards and loved it when the sun came out and illuminated my painting. I really should paint more. Palo Santo on my hands to remind me of the experience. Releasing some tension and feelings.

Kimchi miso soup with rice, beans, tofu cubes and lots of veggies at Del Lago. Deliciosa. Need to recreate it at home.

(And the lovely peanut butter cookie I ate for dessert.)

I found pretzel buns, sourdough bread with black olives and buttery almond croissants at Circles Bakery. Jackpot!

Meeting Brian and Lily in San Pedro. Drinks, karaoke, Hawaiian physio moves, deep talk and silly jokes (I like penis a lot = Pina colada).

Taking the boat to go to the other side of the lake, being surrounded by volcanoes. A truly special place.

Horny breathwork. Learning that what angers me is instruction. Being told what to do. And a Russian accent? Intrusive questions. Especially about feelings. Tell me what you're feeling and where is a demand that made me shut down completely. Difficult but interesting - where does this resistance come from?

A party with horrible hippie trance music - I felt so out of place. But I actually had a little fun whenever the DJ played something Bollywood or hip-hop inspired.

An extremely chill Sunday. Desayuno típico. Meeting Za and his daughter Petra. A video call with Sash. A croissant from Circles Bakery. Bought a ring for my conch piercing. Creative play session with Kyle (he had face tattoos and I kinda loved them on him). I was the only one there so we started talking and he wanted to do some Inner Child Work. I told him about my favourite witch stories from when I was a kid. I would sit at my desk for hours, drawing and listening to audiobooks. So he sent me to the garden to collect things for a spell he wanted me to create. I had to walk through the magic gate to step into my powers. So I intuitively came up with a spell for more balance in my life. I burned my spell, included all elements using holy water from Lourdes and plant materials. I drew tarot cards and wasn't surprised how accurate the images mirrored my intentions. I got The World and it meant the world to me. The Sun and Two of Swords. Powerful. Afterwards I had the best massage with Alicia. Lots of movement and pressure. When I came back to the hostel I went to the sauna and swam in the lake after sunset.

Volcano rumbling. So cool.

A private Family Constellations session with Sara. She told me repeatedly that the wood, possessions, crystals, oils and scents are what she's drawn to as my soul. I have to follow what excites me, comes easy to me, speaks to me. Not be afraid of people but find them in the right context, not at parties but in art workshops. Make deeper connections. Try to live authentically. Get into contact with inner child: provide the love, acceptance and protection I'm missing.

Voice activation with Stefan. Activating our chakras through humming. I loved pretending to be a band and layering instrument and voice loops, listening to each other. Improvising.

The Indian Nose hike was quite the adventure. The three of us got a tuk tuk up there before sunrise and actually had to walk a few times because we were too heavy for the vehicle. It was still dark when we started hiking and I had a pretty hard time keeping up. When we arrived at the view point I just wanted to rest but there were already so many people, talking loudly and taking photos. I was a bit disappointed and annoyed. After a while I decided to walk back down by myself which was pretty nice. My mood got better immediately and the view really was breathtaking. Walking through nature on my own was lovely. I enjoyed the coffee plants growing all around, the morning sun, the cows grazing on the fields.

Waking up early. Hearing a very interesting bird song for the first time. A squirrel balancing on a washing line. Fluffy (the bitchy hostel cat) meowing outside the bathroom door. Cuddles and scratches... and then she accepted to be transported into my bed. She chose me! Proud moment.

Another day meeting friends (Chopper, Lily and Brian) at Vida Café. Speaking German with Chopper. A rainy afternoon at Eagle's Nest, happily untangling and rolling up Lily's yarn. Falling flat down on my ass on the slippery hill even though Brian had warned me before was definitely not a highlight but at least I didn't hurt myself.

Eating Sabis (Israeli pita bread filled with eggplant, falafel and hummus) in San Pedro with Omer and Nir.

Working on my sketchbook and really getting creative. Just doing whatever feels right. Glueing in holo garlands and beer labels, drawing psychedelic mushrooms, hyping myself up with tarot wisdom. Geeking out over mexislang words, birth chart/astrology info, just doing quick sketches.

I found a dead bird in the yoga shala. There was a butterfly right next to it. Death and life. Transformation. I gave the bird a funeral in the lake. Put it on a big leaf and made a bed with beautiful flowers and twigs. I said a few words and put it down on the water.

Matching with the charismatic Austrian guy I met at a hostel party in Antigua. There was still no spark between us but I felt as if life had given me a second chance. Or maybe it was just to show me that he really wasn't meant for me and I had no reason to be sad about a missed connection.

Indian food in Panajachel. Delicious garlic cheese naan. Getting a few pens at the stationery shop. Writing many pages in my journal.

Looking out the window while driving through Chiapas during golden hour. Feeling the strong urge lo live in a valley, near a forest. With animals and a vegetable garden and a studio and an old house I can renovate. The landscape reminded me so much of home.

Returning to San Cris. Tasty tamales and my favourite vintage store.

When the earplugs start blending out the outside noise - a continuous, gradual deafness.

Waking up in the night bus during sunrise, overlooking a gorgeous valley with eagles hovering in the air.

Smelling the fresh strawberries in my salad. The smell of Do's shower gel lingering in the air. Late afternoon sun. A red cat strolled along the wall below the café. Taking in the view.

MicroEnormous immersion theatre - it gave me so many ideas and I loved wearing the trippy glasses! Prisms, lights, sense deprivation, smells, rituals, mezcal - a very celebratory mood. I need to connect to darkness more.

The Día de los Muertos festivities in Oaxaca. People in costumes, painted faces, musicians in black velvet, flowers and decorations everywhere.

A group video call with the fam. All agreeing on living together eventually? But I'm afraid I can't count on them at all. So I'll have to do my own thing. But Michi said something so nice about me. That I'm courageous and talented and will always land on my feet. And that I should just go for it and work as an artist. New idea: working part time as a teacher and finding another job that actually brings me joy for the rest of my time

Meeting Yeshua for dinner at an Indian restaurant. Getting drinks in Reforma, playing pool. Learning new words, watching people doing tricks on their motorcycles on the way.

Another Treat Yourself Sunday. I bought a tiny cup made from Oaxacan clay - a typical one with a face. And a white kimono top with manta rays. Got a café latte frío (only coffee, milk, ice cubes. No sugar. So grateful for everything unsweetened). And a massage. Then I took a taxi to book fair where I met Diego. We spent the evening together, drawing at a restaurant and drinking beer on my hostel's rooftop.

I have had my masters (4 initiations with symbols) to be able to practice and teach) since I was 15. Reiki has helped me and my family and I am honoured to hold its power every passing day. It's very simplistic and minimalistic, something important when it comes to healing the body. It's the little things. Little things can make an extraordinary impact on wellbeing. I always wanted my own reiki studio to help heal others I feel other areas of business to be inadequate to the satisfaction I get knowing I'm truly helping others and helping other find their way when they're lost, like I have been before many times. I was interested in counselling or therapy but would rather do it all on my own, especially after learning reiki and becoming self-sovereign. Love reigns supreme and the best book you can read is within yourself. I do offer talk therapy as well, I believe I have a gift with words and helping people through difficult areas of life. I have always been someone people come to talk too and I thought if i can why not offer talk therapy as well as reiki. Before starting my own business. I was managing a doggy daycare with sometimes fifteen dogs and sometimes six employees. Although the dogs loved me and I loved being with them as my choice of work. I decided to pursue my passion, something that has been sitting still waiting for me to have the courage to do and that involves healing and being of service to others in any way I can. This seems like the most powerful way of doing this and the approach I take to help others is something I have deeply thought about to make sure it can be the most powerful and help for lifetimes. I do feel I have a gift, and I've been told it can be very healing. I ask if you do choose to book a session to stay open minded about things. But, not to worry, I will go over everything before we start our initial session. Any questions you have, I'm here. The world needs more healing.
