"But if college was free, then people would abuse that and get useless degrees" hell yeah I would! If I could go to college without debt I would make it my job to get a degree in every little thing that interested me. I'd get a doctorate in film studies. I'd have a bachelor's degree for every science I like. I'd try to learn at least 5 languages with varying results. I would learn something "useful" like coding and then follow it up with a ""useless"" degree like art history. I'd be the world record speed run holder for getting every degree possible.
But I can't afford college without going into massive debt, so instead I spent the last 5 years trying to figure out what I am passionate enough about to consider going into debt over, because unfortunately being passionate about everything is extremely expensive to pursue.
#simon says#i love learning so much and I hate the USA's college debt system#once they make that shit free I will be unstoppable#this topic sprung up because I had the idea that im very academic and annoyingly analytical that I might as well get a degree in it#because without a degree you just seem like an autistic asshole#but with a degree? then you look like a CREDIBLE autistic asshole#don't worry I will still learn but I still want that funky piece of paper to tell everyone I learnt it#also there's some things that are VERY difficult to learn#like I would love to persue this topic further but unfortunately I would need help with that#also before you say 'try taking [blank] classes instead! it's less expensive than a degree!' im broke#my only learning resource is the library sorry about that#also this is not the post to give me unwarranted financial advice#finances are one of the topics I DO NOT care about and I WILL NOT listen to a word you say

Iâm going to take away your media literacy skills
#threat that wouldnât work on half the people on the internet#the curtains ARE blue and also it CAN mean something and it can ALSO just be a detail. it matters what YOU think how YOU read!!#sometimes the curtains are blue just because but sometimes it means something more. you have to be able to know when is when.#subtext is real and symbolism is real and there is meaning even when the author didnât mean there to be#read analytically understand beyond face value and actually think about things instead of blindly believing what the internet says#you donât have to like whatâs popular you donât have to hate whatâs panned. form your own opinions#but if you donât learn how to read between the lines you can be lied to so easily and you can misunderstand people so easily

I really do think looking at bad writing is one of the best ways to learn about writing in general, especially for beginners.
the thing is, writing in general is highly subjective- a good sentence will be good in different ways to different people, or not impress someone at all.
a bad sentence? most people can spot bad sentences easy, especially if it is presented to them as 'here's an example of a bad sentence, let's unpack why.'
bad writing can also be very funny, which I think is again often more engaging than 'here's a work of literary genius go analyze it'. Like here's some bad writing from lightlark3:
The moment it was out of Horusâs grip, his body became bones. The flesh turned to ash. He became a corpse.
it's dumb as hell, but I think could foster a solid discussion when you ask 'why? what is the author intending to say? what about it makes it feel 'clunky'? How would you write the same idea?'
#truly pointless posting of just. thoughts in me head#âof course you'd say that guy who has a special interest in bad writingâ okay but I think it's true#thinking about chatgpt and writing and just going 'goddamn I wish I could help the youth with writing bc it can be so fun'#'analytical skills are so important in general especially with writing and reading and I think this is a fun good way to introduce that'#I don't do full on breakdowns of examples of bad writing that much in reviews vs more in context talk...#but I do hope I do a good job of trying to explain my thoughts and how I got there and how things can be viewed from many angles and not ju#t that things are bad but why. sometimes I feel very repetative when I explain stuff but then i think what if my vid is the first time#someone is exposed to some concept. I don't want them to learn 'this trope sucks' i want them to know why and how it fails and what it is#i guess....... rambles. I don't think I could be a teacher esp not go to uni again but its a thing I've always been passionate about#bc I have this dumb naive idea I can communicate with people and help them understand things#I also just want to be a positive influence on people's lives. idc online but I used to co-run dnd for mixed age group#and I enjoyed being that aspect of 'after school club adult'. I didn't have a lot of adult support as a kid so it's nice to be that!

not to be controversial on main, but i really do feel like way more people would enjoy maths if someone properly explained it to them & they didn't have a hanging threat of failing an exam above their heads
#it's genuinely so nice to try mathematics outside of academic setting!#look at me solving numbers' wee riddles three! they are speaking to me!!!!!#it's like being a detective in the world of formulas. liek evolution. like constant battke of survival#everytime you learnt a new tactic to solve a problem. another obstacle appears#me and math are locked in eternal dance where we fight like enemies yet are unable to live without each other like lovers#there's no math without mind being able to percieve. and there's no seeing reality without perceiving maths#AND NUMBERS ARE. EVERYWHERE#don't get me wrong i'm not an analytical kinda person. i was always the english & biology type of kid and physics was my enemy in school#BUT IF YOU LOOK AT IT RIGHT. YOU TOO CAN LEARN TO APPRECIATE MATH#math#ramblings

Scientists have devised a free AI algorithm that they believe will make finding new medicines far more efficient. DrugSynthMC can generate thousands of brand new, virtual drug molecules in seconds for screening and testing. It can adapt to whatever "target" molecule is inputted, creating a library of drug candidates to test against this target, before optimizing the ones that work to make them still better. Available via Open Source, it can generate 10,000 molecules to fit a particular target in 0.75 seconds.
