Reposting, because IG wanted me to REMOVE the audio, but YOUTUBE allows it. Make it make sense. Link in my bio. A little something vintage and lovey dovey for this Saturday. Since I have this rather big BIRTHDAY coming up for me this year, I challenged myself to dabble in and learn certain things. Things that I've always wanted to pursue and had an interest in. Anyone that knows me, from the playground days, knows how much I love vintage (black) Hollywood. The films, the scripts, the camera angles, the grandiose and structured costumes and the sweet darling acting and femininity. Lena Horne has always been a huge inspiration to me since my mother showed me her films as a child. I wanted to pay tribute to Ms. Lena Horne in a short mini film that we shot and that I directed in Kauai. Just some vintage, busy fun day at the beach fun... I'm guessing in 1958 if I were to go back in time. (Minus the rental car!) 😆🤷🏻♀️ Link in the bio to see the whole video. Thanks for cheering me on ya'll. Pursue the dreams that you want, for fun, for life and for the mission. Leave this earth...EMPTY when your time is done. #vintage #vintagehollywood #vintagehollywoodglamour #lenahorne #lenahorneforever #kauailife #blackhollywood #ootdinspiration #loewe #vintageblackglamour #directorialdebut #womenover40 (at Kekaha Beach Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp7rdeUuBf4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

TRAILBLAZERS Last night I watched the doc on Rita Moreno called “the girl who decided to go for it” and it was so inspiring that I decided to pay homage in today’s post to some of these Hollywood figures (there are plenty more) who decided to defy stereotypes and discrimination, and where there were no role models, paved the way for future generations. Besides Moreno herself, who fought all her life to be proud of her heritage, to Lena Horne, who worked with civil rights and political organizations and refused to play roles that stereotyped African American women, to Anna May Wong, that in 1960 became the first Asian American woman to get a Walk of Fame Star in Hollywood. We salute you ❤️ #trailblazers #ritamoreno #lenahorne #AnnaMayWong #thegirlwhodecidedtogoforit #stereotypes #civilrights #proud #heritage #oldhollywood #AlejandroMogolloArt https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckn7V5SonvW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Lena Horne, singer, actress, and dancer whose talent has earned her much admiration and fame, was born in Brooklyn, NY, on this date June 30 1917.
Horne’s career spanned over seventy years, appearing in film, television, and theatre.
She’s known for films such as ‘Cabin in the Sky’ and 'The Wiz’ as well as the musical and trademark song, “Stormy Weather.” “Porgy and Bess” the album with her and Harry Belafonte was critically acclaimed.
Lena Horne was also known for her work with civil rights groups and refused to play roles that stereotyped African American women, a stance that many found controversial.
Evelyn King was born on July 1, 1960, in New York City, New York to Johnniea and Erik King. She was raised in Philadelphia. She is one of eight children. King’s childhood nickname was “Bubbles.” Her uncle Avon Long had played the part of Sportin’ Life in the first Broadway revival of Porgy and Bess and worked with #LenaHorne at the Cotton Club. Her father was a back-up singer for groups at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. Her mother managed a group named Quality Red.
King was discovered while working with her mother at Philadelphia International Records as an office cleaner. Producer Theodore T. Life overheard her singing in a washroom and began coaching her. Eventually she signed a production deal with Life’s Galaxy Productions and a recording contract with RCA Records.
At the beginning of her career the name Evelyn King sounded “too grown-up” so the name “Champagne” was added.
In 1982, King released the album, Get Loose. It yielded a top-twenty pop and #1 #Soul hit with the single, “Love Come Down”. The song also peaked at No. 1 on the #dance chart and reached the UK Singles Chart top-ten, peaking at No. 7 for three weeks.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Florence Ballard, Boyz II Men’s 1992 End of the Road” single, Billy Brown (The Moments), Bryn Burrows (Fabulous Poodles), the TV debut of The Johnny Carson Show (1955), Cirque de Soliel’s 2006 debut of THE BEATLES - LOVE, Stanley Clarke, the 1989 film GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, Andy Knowles (Franz Ferdinand), Mike Leander, Hal Lindes (Dire Straits), Yngwie Malmsteen, Glenn Shorrock, Superman comics #1 (1938), Dave Van Ronk, Leonard Whiting, Ronald Winans, and the legendary actress, dancer, singer, and Civil Rights activist Lena Horne. She was a trail-blazer whose career spanned 70 years and covered films, musicals, recordings, and television. Her 1980 one-woman show, LENA HORNE: THE LADY AND HER MUSIC ran on Broadway for over 300 performances, and in 1995 she won a Grammy for her jazz album AN EVENING WITH LENA HORNE when she was 78 years old. I wrote this song “Girl With The Lena Horne Smile” as a tribute to her (and to my fiancé Uma Robin Mackey for her own “Lena Horne Smile”). Meanwhile, thank you Lena for being courageous, talented, and for breaking down barriers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT8duaeQIVQ
