Superstitions
Composers and performing artists can often be superstitious about dealing with the trials and tribulations of performing and composing. From ‘touch wood’ or avoiding walking under a ladder or crossing fingers or feeling concerned about getting out of bed on Friday the 13th. Many of these superstitions can feel very real to those affected by them. In this edition of In Conversation we look at how…

At the extraordinary UN General Assembly in New York (2021), held at the request of the leaders of the European Union and the New Arab Bloc, Israeli representative Miriam Novak spoke.
Standing on a high podium against the backdrop of the green marble wall of the main UN meeting room, Miriam Novak said into the microphone:
Ladies and Gentlemen! As you can see, eighty years ago, Europe, led by Germany, carried out an ethnic cleansing:
it destroyed almost all the Jews living there. The French, Belgians, Dutch, Norwegians, Hungarians, Slovaks, Poles, Lithuanians, Ukrainians - all helped the Nazis.
You killed at least six million Jews along with their newborn babies.
Each of them could give the world children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, so you can safely multiply the number of those killed four or five times...
And now, when we are again robbed, beaten and killed in all your countries, and your courts set the murderers free, you tell us that we have no right to defense?
Don't we have the right to warn our enemies that we will respond to a new ethnic cleansing with an even more powerful blow?
Maybe you can name another nation that your new international community led by Iran is so fanatically striving to destroy? And for what?
For two thousand years we lived among you, giving you our knowledge, discoveries and inventions.
We have given you the alphabet, the Bible, the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, the twelve apostles, Spinoza, Disraeli, Columbus[?], Newton, Nostradamus, Heine, Mendelssohn, Einstein, Singer, Eisenstein, Freud, Landau, Gershwin, Offenbach, Rubinstein, Sen -Sans[?], Kafka, Lombroso, Montaigne, Mahler, Marcel Marceau, Vsevolod Meyerhold, Yehudi Menuhin, Stefan Zweig, Arthur Miller, Maya Plisetskaya, Stanley Kubrick, Irving Berlin, Edward Teller, Lyon Feuchtwanger, Paul Newman, Robert Oppenheimer, Benny Goodman, Eugene Ionesco, Imre Kalman, Marcel Proust, Charlie Chaplin[?], Marc Chagall, Barbra Streisand, Claude Lelouch, Steven Spielberg, Anouk Aimee, Leonard Bernstein, Norbert Wiener, Larry Page, Mark Zuckerberg, Sergey Brin, Andrew Lloyd Webber and thousands of other scientists and educators.
Just imagine how many of the same geniuses the millions of Jews you killed, and then their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, could give birth to the world!
But these unborn geniuses disappeared forever in the ovens of crematoria, burned synagogues and mass graves.
So do you really think that with your resolutions, boycotts and sanctions we can be driven into gas chambers again?
No, gentlemen!
Having lived among you for two thousand years, we had to adapt to you and learn not only your languages but also something of your psychology. Otherwise, how would we have survived in Persia without Persian treachery? In Spain without Spanish cruelty? In Germany without German obedience to discipline? In France without French stinginess? In Poland, without Polish swagger, and in Russia, without swearing and the Russian habit of using yard toilets, where you need to sit like an eagle and talk about your spiritual greatness? - (Laughter in the hall.)
Read the whole thing. EY

Hiii! My oc’s name is Karina and I was wondering if you have any last names that could fit her that give off ‘lion’ vibes ?? (sorry if this is confusing 😭)
heres some last names that either mean lion or have lion in the spelling including words in a few languages that translate to lion!
aslan
de lion, de lioncourt, de leon
Lion, Lion-Cachet, Lionaki, Lionberger, Liondaris, Liondley, Lione, Lionel, Lionello, Liones, Lionetti, Liong, Lionhan, Lionidle, Lionings, Lionman, Lionnel, Lionnes, Lionnet, Lions, Lionson, Lionti, Liontos, Liontou, Liony, lionette, lioness, lionheart, lioncourte, lionhardt, lionhart, lyon, leon, Leeuwenhoek, lowe, loewe, lomi, lomidze, lionarde, leonard, leo, leonarde, leonardo, levon, lionid, leonid, lennartson, lennartdottr, lionson, leonson, liondottr, leondottr, lev, lav, løve, leeuw, leijona, liontári, lejon, leu, lew, leão, lejonet, Leuzodie, Løven
Van Leeuwenhoek
(you can replace "dottr", general norse, with datter, danish/Norwegian, or "dotter", swedish, all mean "daughter of". or son with sen, meaning "son of" but considering how last names are passed down now a days you can still have a last name ending in son/sen regardless of your gender)
i can do a seperate list with surnames meaning strength, loyal/loyalty, royal/royalty, bravery and other things associated with lions if you'd like.

Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars (Daniel Pinkwater) "Leonard Neeble has been unhappy since his parents moved from the big city to suburban Kangaroo Park, New Jersey. His new school, Bat Masterson Jr. High, is terrible, and he has no friends since his classmates are snobbish louts who won't be friends with him because he's portly.
Things change once a new student shows up from The Bronx: Alan Mendelsohn, a trollish student who shuts the school down by telling everyone he's from Mars. After they both get suspended for acting out, the two boys journey to Downtown Hogboro, where they start a Mind Control course that teaches them telekinesis and, eventually, how to travel between dimensions."
The Crooked World (Steve Lyons) "Synopsis: The people of the Crooked World lead an idyllic existence.
Take Streaky Bacon, for example. This jovial farmer wants nothing more from life than a huge blunderbuss, with which he can blast away at his crop-stealing nemesis. And then there's Angel Falls, a racing driver with a string of victories to her name. Sure, her trusted guardian might occasionally put on a mask and menace her for her prize money, but that's just life, right? And for Jasper the cat, nothing could be more pleasant than a nice, long nap in his kitchen — so long as that darn mouse doesn't jam his tail into the plug socket again.
But somebody is about to shatter all those lives. Somebody is about to change everything — and it's possible that no one on the Crooked World will ever be happy again.
The Doctor's TARDIS is about to arrive. And when it does… That's all folks!
Propaganda: okay. okay okayokayokkay. I can be normal about this book (a lie). The TARDIS lands on a planet that operates on cartoon logic. The Doctor immediately gets shot in the chest and everyone is very confused when he doesn't immediately heal. The travelers have inadvertently introduced the real world into this Saturday Morning fantasyland, bringing in foreign concepts like death and sex and social inequality. For the first time, people can die permanently. The two-bit villains unite to nuke the heroic characters. The Scooby gang actually do discover the flayed corpse of God. In the middle of it all is the Doctor at maximum Dr. Nyarlathotep, fomenting revolution and drastic metaphysical upheaval in his strange, too-real clothes. If nothing else, vote for this book for actually making me cry over the death of Scrappy Fuckin' Doo!"

Text: “Dear Errol — yes I did receive your telegram and thanks a million. I really needed some wonderful luck that night [and got it.] Why should your buddies tease you? What it proves is that you are an individualist and they (conform). Cheers for the individualists, I say! Best of all good things to you all your life. Ever, Tony Perkins”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Text: “Dear Sylvia, I got to thinking what a nice time I’d had at your brunch the other Sunday, my left hand reached for my old ink pen [luckily I’m left-handed or this would be illegible] and now I’m committing to paper this long, unwieldy sentence which in essence says thanks for asking me and that I hope to see you here and there, somewhere, soon. Affectionately, Tony P.” [A letter to Sylvia Lyons]
Tumblr media
Text: “Dear Lyonses, Thanks so much for including me in your very pleasant non-cocktail Party for M. Chapall. In this you succeeded. Sylvia — call it a six o’clock brunch if you like, but it was triumphantly NOT a cocktail party. I spoke to Mary Anne Madden [(someone’s) Sister-In-Law Friday] about the extra lock on the door on your floor and she said it had been done but thanks for thinking of them. Yours, Tony P.” — [A letter to Sylvia and Leonard Lyons with some parts illegible. Feel free to offer up suggestions as to what it says!]
Here’s a little collection of letters my pal on Twitter found on worthpoint, alongside my attempts to decipher Tony’s atrocious cursive <3
Edit: I also have to note how connected I feel seeing that Tony also had to struggle with the left-handed bane — ink that doesn’t dry fast enough so you end up smearing your letters with the side of your pinky. 🙏🙏🙏 we are kindred spirits truly and deeply. I believe I have a card somewhere of his he wrote that has the pinky smear too, which yippee!! Same struggle!!
